1 YOUR FREE SPORTS & COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER PAGE 1 CSA Hails Zola .: info@sportsexpress.co.za Thamae s Landmark Election 30 AUGUST 2013 Riverside crowned Build-it - DCFA U13 Champs Cricket South Africa congratulated Ms. Zola Thamae on her election as the first lady president of any of CSA s affiliates after she had been elected to the Free State Cricket Union s highest post at its annual meeting. This is a landmark moment not just for cricket but I believe for all sport in South Africa, commented CSA President Chris Nenzani. It is highly appropriate that this election should take place in August which is the month in which we celebrate the enormous contribution women have made to all aspects of South African society. It was a very sad month for us last year when the CEO of Northerns Cricket Union, Elize Lombard, passed away on National Women s Day as she was certainly a pioneer in the advancement of women at the highest levels of South African cricket administration. But this year it is an occasion to celebrate as we remember Elize s enormous contribution and also wish Zola all the best in her new role. Zola is a highly experienced cricket administrator, having served Free State as vicepresident for four years. She also served on CSA s Board of Directors under the previous dispensation and was the first woman to do so. She is a former manager of our national women s team and currently serves on CSA s transformation committee. We all look forward to welcoming her as a valued member of CSA s shareholder group, the Members Forum. Ms. Thamae commented: I am deeply honoured to be elected to this prestigious position and I look forward to the challenges it will undoubtedly place in front of me. Free State cricket is in a very healthy state at the moment with our provincial team having had a very good season last year. The Central franchise of which we are part continues to be highly competitive in the major domestic competitions as well. Ms. Thamae, 49, is also highly respected in the business world as a senior manager at the Department of Sport, Art and Culture in the Free State. The tournament featured 16 teams made up of invited league and schools The Uthungulu District Municipality Team is the new provincial champions for the Indigenous Games. The hosts (Uthungulu) dethroned the previous champions Ethekwini in the games held at the Richards Bay Sports Complex at the week-end. Amajuba District maintained their second spot while Ethekwini was relegated to third place. Speaking at the com- teams, showcasing untapped talent from different backgrounds. Uthungulu wins Indigenous Games mencement of the games, the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, Mrs Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha stressed that the Indigenous Games (IGs) were important in promoting and preserving the diverse culture of our province. All teams received meals and sponsored items for players and coach, with the winners receiving one full team kit, a large trophy, 16 kit bags, 16 miniature trophies while the runners up received 16 kit bags and 16 miniature trophies. Congratulations to Riverside. They were crowned champions after beating Linfield 3-0 in the final. We are delighted to see more people becoming actively involved in this sport and hope these games will occupy their rightful place alongside soccer and rugby in the near future. The department is striving to help produce superstars that will compete and win in similar global events, she said. Games played were ushumpu, Ingqathu (rope skipping), Khokho, Umlabalaba (the board game) Dibeke, Drie Stokkies, Amagende (stones), Incuva and Induku (stick fighting).

2 SPORTS EXPRESS PAGE 2 Amateur Football still the Loser By Enzo Coppola Leading up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the South African government and other parties with vested interests, like the South African Football Association, were all doing their best to convince Joe Public that the quadrennial tournament was the best thing that could happen to our country. They re-assured people that it was worth spending millions, as tens of thousands of people would visit our country and besides businesses getting a big boost, tourism would also receive a huge shot in the arm. Besides all the infrastructure, huge new stadiums were built for the World Cup, some, like the Moses Mabhida in Durban were built because 'football needed its own stadium' in this City. Now, over 3 years since the successful hosting of the World Cup in South Africa, a question that needs to be asked is "what positive difference did the tournament make to the average football person?" If we highlight some of the negative issues amateur football faced in the pre-2010 days it may help us understand where we are in terms of progress. Fast-forward to the end of the 2013 winter season and we find that none of any of the above issues have been addressed, despite constant promises by the municipality and also assurances from the Local Football Associations that they are "engaging" with the authorities with a view to improving matters. The LFA's appear to be toothless; as the stock reply is that there are never funds available to address these issues. However, the ethekwini municipality will always make millions available to host Bafana matches, Top Gear festivals or high-profile concerts at the drop of a hat. The previous football stadium that existed on the site where Moses Mabhida now stands was called New Kingsmead. It was a stadium that had a capacity of and had originally been designed with a view to expanding its capacity to upwards of Around the year 2000, it was upgraded at great cost and had a new athletics track installed around a state-of -the-art football field specifically for the Africa games. hours before any league matches, and if they do allow a curtain-raiser it will only be involving junior teams that "won't damage the field". Having also built a few "outfields" in the same precinct that are of a very high standard -- even those are completely out of the reach of Mr Joe Public. The cost of R1500 per hour to hire is completely exorbitant and out of the reach of any amateur club. One would think that if a Local Football Association applied to stage an annual tournament on the "outfields", that the municipality may be more accommodating with an official approach, and be willing to subsidise the progress of amateur football and help with 'development', however the answer is always a flat "no". Pay up like everyone else is the answer. So the ethekwini municipality is now in the business of making a profit from its ratepayers from the very land that is meant to be used and frequented freely by the ratepayers themselves. So post 2010 the stark question still is: "What did the FIFA 2010 World Cup competition, sanctioned and endorsed by SAFA do for you and me as average people? The answer is absolutely nothing in football terms. Our facilities are still terrible in the greater Durban districts, if not worse; there is no representative inter-district or inter-provincial football; we have no access to the better grounds on the outer Moses Mabhida fields, and kids cannot even start to dream about even walking onto the Main Moses Mabhida field, never mind actually playing on it. One could say that the FIFA 2010 World Cup, sanctioned by SAFA could have been used as a catalyst to achieve far better progress in South African Football, instead it has been a dream-killer for many aspiring footballers who have lost faith in the system. There were a number of grounds in and around the greater Durban area that had been left to rot and had been invaded and inhabited by vagrants, such as Bert Taylor Park in Red Hill, Mandene Park in Cato Manor, Ramblers in Montclair, and Umbilo FC in Umbilo to name a few. I have not had the opportunity to visit similar situations around the ethekwini region, but I am sure they are many more in a similar dilapidated state. Within the current amateur leagues in the greater Durban area, for many years before 2010 clubs would be playing at grounds that were very badly maintained, had no security, no running water, and lacked ablutions or change rooms. Teams would most always change under a tree (if you were lucky) on the side of the field. Floodlights at 99% of the municipal fields were non-existent. How clubs managed to get decent training sessions during the dark winter months is anybody's guess. This was a field with tremendous history and heritage, accumulated over many years. The beauty of New Kingsmead was that, being on municipal land, it was accessible to the average grassroots clubs, from juniors to seniors, which also extended to the numerous outfields in the same precinct. For many players of all ages, taking part in a curtain-raiser or cup-final was something to look forward to and to dream about. The thought and hope of playing on the "Main field inspired many a kid, including myself. However, we, as amateur clubs involved at grassroots level, now find ourselves post-2010 that the brand new Moses Mabhida stadium is totally out of bounds and out of reach for all of us. Only the professional clubs and Bafana use the main field, and they only do so because they are heavily subsidised by the city. The Professional Soccer League has banned curtain-raisers for a few

The success of this event has inspired an even larger event for PRESS RELEASE The Circuit Manager s Champion Cup Champions Cup 2013 commenced in July 2013 with 330 Primary and Secondary Schools participating at Intra Circuit Level to establish Champion Schools. In 2013 the Competition not only confines itself to the Mafukuzela Gandhi Cluster but extends its borders to incorporate schools in the Durban North West Cluster. The 11 Circuits (Billy Nair Circuit; Verulam Circuit; Phoenix Central Circuit; Phoenix North Circuit; Inanda North Circuit; Inanda Central Circuit; Kwa Mashu Circuit; Malandela Circuit; Ntuzuma Circuit; Kranskloof Circuit and Westville Circuit) within these two Clusters have contested and competed in the codes of Netball and Soccer in the Primary and Secondary School Divisions. The respective Circuit Champion schools will converge on the Sachrine Grounds, Phoenix, for a Gala day of finals on the 31 August It is encouraging to note that our sponsors Umongo Petroleum ( Boston Moonsamy), Stonebridge Food Services (Reuben Govender), Medal King (Azad Rahim), Charmers Sports (Ebrahim), Buxon Printers, Mr. Danny Manikam and The Department of Sport and Recreation have so readily assisted in making this venture possible. This Programme has been informed by the need for a rejuvenation of organized school sports at primary and secondary schools. We are hopeful that other Circuits in this Province take the responsibility of convening similar programmes to enhance learner participation in sport. The public is encouraged to arrive in their numbers to support this event. Sporting U13 Netball Champs Chatsworth Netball Union held their opening tournament for juniors on Sunday, August 11. This tournament gave the girls an opportunity to showcase their talents before the league campaign kicks off. Fielding three teams in this tournament, Hotel Savera Chatsworth Sporting competed in two finals with the U13 team being crowned champions in their age group. This committed group of girls have been practising since March under the guidance and tutelage of coach Mala Govindasamy who has worked tirelessly to prepare the girls for the season. The fantastic team spirit and competitiveness displayed undoubtedly contributed to the success of this team as they beat a very competitive Kingston netball club in the final. The Hotel Savera Chatsworth Sporting team were unbeaten in the round robin stages and carried this form into a pulsating final. Natara Moodley and Bhavna Persadh were in scintillating goal scoring form and made sure that the hard work of the rest of the team was rewarded. Having come from the U11 ranks last year, this team has made the smooth transition to U13 netball with much maturity. Meanwhile the Hotel Savera Chatsworth Sporting U15 team reached the final and lost very narrowly to Durban Africa after leading at half time. But the girls did Sport ing proud with their consistent performances in the tournament and together with coach Daisy Govender, laid the platform for a fruitful junior season ahead. Junior training takes place on Fridays at the Chatsworth Netball courts and anyone interested in joining the U11, U13 and U15 teams can contact Jason on or Mala on or visit the club web site on Photo: Hotel Savera Chatsworth Sporting U13 champs

This result represented a fine fightback after India had won the first match by an innings. The winter international programme which included two four-day Test series and a triangular ODI series has been a huge success, commented CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat, and all three participating countries Australia A completed the line-up are to be congratulated on the quality of their cricket and the manner in which all the games were played. Both India and Australia came here with a large number of players with international experience and it was an excellent test for our rank of potential future Protea players. South Africa, Australia and India all have plenty lot of depth to their cricket and I am hopeful that this initiative is something that can be built on going forward. This last match represented the best traditions of the firstclass game with the one side first gaining the ascendancy and then the other fighting back to dominate. I would also like to thank our affiliates for the work they put in to provide excellent playing facilities at both Pretoria and Rustenburg. It has been a very worthwhile exercise which will benefit cricket in all three countries, he added. South Africa A coach Vinnie Barnes commented: Several of our players have taken the opportunity to impress. Beuran Hendricks first 10-wicket haul in the match that finished today (11/63) was obviously a stand-out performance but it was by no means the only one and the likes of Dean Elgar, Reeza Hendricks, Thami Tsolekile and Simon Harmer to name a few have also done extremely well.
