1 T H E B A S I N F O O T B A L L C L U B - J U N I O R N E W S L E T T E R The Bear Essentials Issue 4 June 2014 MIDDLE OF THE SEASON! The 2014 junior footy season is now well past the halfway mark with only 4 rounds of the home and away season to go. Results to date for The Basin juniors have been very encouraging across the majority of our teams. After ten rounds, the Under 11s are in second spot, the Under 12s are in fifth spot, the Under 13s are in third spot, the Under 14s are in fourth spot and the Under 15s are in fifth spot of their respective ladders. The 17s have been battling hard and whilst giving it a crack, have yet to register their 2nd win hopefully it is not too far away! Overall though, out of our six competitive teams, five are looking like giving finals a shake. The non-competing teams have also been doing very well, and whilst they don t officially score, the word is that they have all been very competitive. Overall, all teams including the 9 s, 10 s & Auskick are playing and training well and having a great time enjoying their footy which is what it is all about! I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents and supporters of the need to show positive support on match days to our teams, opposition and umpires alike. To this end, there have been a couple of situations occur this season which have required some form of follow up. This is disappointing, particularly as the Club won the EFL award last season for the best conducted club. That aside, the general feedback from other clubs and the League regarding the conduct of our club has been very positive and reflects well on all members. Lets keep this going!! Finally, after a start to the season that was impacted upon by injuries to a number of key players, our senior club has had a couple of solid wins and now sit only one game outside of the top The Basin Auskick at the G five. Hopefully the form and momentum will keep going for the next 8 rounds and the word is that none of the top teams want to meet The Basin in the finals! The Reserves are sitting in sixth place (only outside the top five on percentage) and the Colts in 8th place. For the Seniors and Reserves it is looking very promising as they move into their 2nd half of the season! The Basin is unique in that the seniors and juniors are one club. This is reflected in the great attendances by supporters for both home and away senior games. All juniors and parents are encouraged to attend and support our seniors. It is great entertainment watching a fantastic standard of local footy and afterwards, you can help the team sing the song! Go Bears! Ian Bell Junior President On Saturday 26th April a group of players from The Basin Auskick clinic had the fantastic opportunity and experience of having a kick on the MCG at the Sydney versus Melbourne Game. They all played a great game and had a ton of fun. The Basin Junior Football Club EFL Best Conducted Junior Club for 2013!

That s right! They ll get no promotion this side of The Basin. So cheer us and we ll beat em all! DID WE WIN, YES WE DID HOW D WE DO IT? EASY!! The Basin Auskick has had a great first half of the year. It is amazing to watch how the kids have improved over the weeks. The weather has been very kind to us so far and the preschool and prep children this year have provided us with endless entertainment. We have also had a record (well, since I started.) number of girls attend, which is fantastic to see. A highlight this year for a number of Auskickers was playing at half time at the MCG during the Sydney versus Melbourne game. All of the kids (and parents) had a great time, with big smiles all round when coming from the ground. In the next couple of weeks all of the children will have the opportunity to meet an AFL player from Hawthorn. We are heading on a road trip to team up with the Boronia Auskick and are looking forward to a great day with our neighbors and hopefully meet a couple of big stars! All the best for the rest of the Auskick season Michelle Clemow and John Weir. Contacts for Auskick are John Weir (Coach ) and Michelle Clemow (Co-ordinator or auskick@thebasin.com.au). 5 Our Trainers! One key role that all teams cannot do without is our trainers. This dedicated group are there every week to help our kids with all of the bumps and knocks that are part of junior footy. A huge thanks to all of our trainers for the great job that they do particularly as we have seen a number of players requiring their able assistance this season. If you are thinking about being a trainer (even for next season) please contact our Trainer Co-ordinator Maree West on Interleague Congratulations Congratulations to Lachie Kruger who has been selected as a part of the EFL Under 14 Division 2 Interleague team. Lachie played in two games over the Queens Birthday weekend and kicked 4 goals! He is playing in the Grand Final at 12pm this Saturday at Shepley Oval, Dandenong. If any of The Basin juniors are able to get along, it would be very much appreciated and you will get the chance to support one the club s up and coming champion players. The EFL Under 14s will be playing against South Metro.
6 The Latest from the Coaches Under 9s Green - Keith Wilson The Under 9 Green team has come a long way since the start of the season. It's gone so quick and there's a lot of future stars for the club coming through!! We have four games to go, so let's keep the skills up and kick lots of goals to finish off the season!! Thanks to everyone that helps out each week. I've had a great time and met some wonderful people and look forward to being involved next year. Brad The boys are proving they can beat the Under best 10s teams John Smith in the competition. The boys are playing very well as a team and are all very competitive. We now have a full team list and luckily, so do a lot of other teams. This means that we can have extra players on the ground so all the boys are getting plenty of game time. Most of the teams are evenly matched, which makes for close and exciting games Cheers John Under 11s Jamey Beggs Hi all, after starting the season off so well with six straight wins, the boys have had an interesting last four weeks. In Round Seven we came up against Ferntree Gully in the top of the table clash. Both sides went into the game undefeated but unfortunately for us, we weren t able to pull off a win. This didn t stop us from putting in a fantastic performance. We were tough and hard at the contest all day and had the majority of the possessions, however we just weren t able to get the score on the board. I thought Heath and Kobe were brilliant all day. In round eight we came up against Montrose, a side we easily defeated by 85 points in Round One. It was a cold and wet day and again the boys didn t get the desired result and were handed our second loss for the year. Unfortunately, we just weren't switched on and prepared to put our head over the footy. Following these two losses, we had two weeks off with the public holiday and a bye. This meant 21 days before our next game and it was fair to say we had some things to work on to get tougher at the ball! So with the help of the bags at training and drills incorporating plenty of physical pressure, we faced the task of taking on Lilydale in a must win game! With this, we put in our best performance of the year with 23 contributors on the day. We won the hard ball and used our pace and skill on the outside to run out winners by 53 points. Lachy S, Tyson and Josh H all played their best games for the year. I was super proud off all the boys for the way they bounced back! We now sit second on the ladder with four games to go. Go Bears!! Cheers Jamey Under 12s Brent Thompson The Under 12 s have continued their good run of form winning 7 games from ten and have a strong grip on 5th position on the ladder. Of our wins, the team has found themselves behind at half time 3 times and have been able to turn the contest around in their favour. This is a real credit to the hard work the team has put in on the training track throughout the year. Every week, the confidence in each player is growing and we are seeing some real improvement from players like Max Lavender, Jayden Smit, Troy Griffin, James Oswald, Cameron Philpotts, Darcy Walters and Jesse Thompson. There is a real belief amongst the group now that they are competitive and when they play the four quarters, they are as good as anyone. Our next opponent is seventh placed Boronia Brown and with four games to go in our season, we have given ourselves a great opportunity to earn a spot in the finals for the first time. Go Bears! Kind Regards Brent Under 13s Matt Young The boys trained hard through pre-season and the early part of the season and were rewarded with a really strong start with some very convincing wins. We have just mixed up our sessions in the last few weeks with some good fun focused sessions and a strength and conditioning session at Knox Athletic track with former Basin great Brad Skerke. With training being adjusted We are now 5 and 6 and with three games slightly to remaining have the boys we can up and make about it to for the business finals with end winning of the season, those games. our intensity Lets has Beat dropped em off All on Boys. game Well day especially Done!! in the last three GO weeks BEARS! with the boys having defeats to a determined Lysterfield and Knox. With Lysterfield, we were outplayed on the day and this has given the boys something to think about for the rest of the season. We currently sit 3rd on the ladder with 8 wins and 2 losses. We have some big challenges ahead and are really looking forward to playing our best footy when it matters most. I am sure the boys will bounce back with the determination required to play their best footy. Thanks again to all of our wonderful helpers who get the boys out there on game day much appreciated. Regards Matt Young. Under 14s Jono Pitman - In Round 7, the boys came up against North Ringwood and with North being a top 3 team, we knew we had a big game on our hands. Luckily, the boys had come to play and we walked away with the 4 points and a 48 point win. There were some great individual performances from Jake Robinson with 5 goals and Jackson Maes having another fantastic game. In Round 8 we played Mitcham who were sitting on top of the ladder. I knew it would be a great challenge for our boys, although unfortunately, we went down by 4 goals.
7 The Latest from the Coaches Under 14s Jono Pitman (cont ) - The boys tried hard all day with Kevin playing a great game down back and Nathan Robinson having another fantastic game. In Round 9, we came up against North Ringwood once again. The boys went into the game with confidence, however it worked against us with the boys going down by 55 points. Not a good day out for the Bears. In Round 10 we played Scoresby and with a finals spot up for grabs, the boys really turned up to play. We walked off the ground with the 4 points, with Jimmy killing it off the half back line, big Chris having his best game for the year and Max Forbes playing a great role up forward. Also, a special mention to Jack Welldon for playing a great shut down role for us and setting up a great win. Go Bears Cheers Jono Under 15s Greg Granland When we last left off, the 15s were sitting 2nd on the ladder at 4-1. The boys were full of confidence after knocking off top team Waverley Blues. We let the boys soak up the win and yes, the danger was that their focus would not be as sharp for the next round. For Round 6, we were playing away to Glen Waverley Rovers. Unfortunately, the boys were a mile away with their intensity, going down by several goals to a team well below us on the ladder. At training, we worked on mindsets, work-rate, belief and intensity. Round 7 saw the team away again to Scoresby and yet again, we were off our Club Code of Conduct best football with too much being done by too few. Although outscoring Scoresby with some 8 or 9 shots on goal to zero in the last quarter, we had too much ground to make up eventually losing by 3 goals. Round 8 was at home against Montrose a big and strong side. Unfortunately, they got the jump and had 6 goals on the board before we really started firing. Yet again we played catch up footy getting to within 2 goals late in the game before injury took its toll and time ran out eventually losing by 4 goals. Whilst going down, everyone was very proud of the team s performance as we outscored Montrose in the final 3 quarters but unfortunately, couldn't sustain the intensity. We were now 4-4 and needing a win to gain confidence and belief again. Round 9 was against Heathmont who had dropped back from A Grade but sat on the bottom of the ladder. This was probably our most disappointing game of the year, going down by a kick. Once again, we let the opposition get the jump and we are working hard to address this at training. All in all, it is my opinion that the team has improved immensely from last season. The challenge is for the team to decide how we finish off this year. I truly believe we have a great bunch of lads and if we sneak into the Final 5 by seasons end, we can have a real crack at it. Thanks to all the helpers on game day and to the Junior Committee who are, in my opinion, leading this club with passion, pride and sacrifice. This is what makes The Basin Junior Footy Club the envy of all other junior clubs - Cheers Knobbo Under 17s David Baldwin The boys have had a challenging season, with only one win out of 10 rounds. This is largely as we are a bottom age side, and as we saw in the Round 10 game against Lilydale, the difference in body sizes can make a huge difference to the game. At the same time, I could not ask any more from our boys. They have gone into each game, week in week out, putting their bodies on the line for the team and their mates which has resulted in a number of them copping injuries. It is a credit to players like Justin Dare who whilst being cleaned up in three games doing his utmost to win the ball keeps bouncing back and having a crack. To the boys credit, they keep turning up to training and giving it their best. I have no doubt that they will all be much better footballers for the experience and hopefully, can crack it for another win by the end of the season. Finally, I would like to thank the guys who help out with the boys each week including Duck, Tracker, Debbers and David and all of the teams helpers Cheers David Code of Conduct All members and supporters are reminded of the need for positive behaviour at all times including when attending both junior and senior football matches and in speaking to club officials, coaches and committee members. The club Code of Conduct has been endorsed by the Committee to strengthen the club and to ensure that the attendance of training, social events and games is an enjoyable experience for all concerned. It is important to remember that junior and senior football is run by volunteers and that everyone involved should be treated with courtesy and respect at all times. It should be noted that abusive and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. The Code of Conduct is available on the Club Website and any queries can be directed to Junior President Ian Bell ( ).

With 9 teams to cater for particularly on Friday nights, this has been a challenging task which has been managed with Brent s usual patience and good humor. To the coaches, players and parents of the Under 11s, 12s and 13s who spent time training off site at the Salvation Army facility in particular on Friday evenings to take pressure off the top ground. This was putting the club first and was very much appreciated. To Michelle Edwards for organizing the annual team photos and dealing with the ensuing chaos on the Wednesday after the Queens Birthday as each team had to be organized and lined up for their shots. To Mel Lavender for doing a fantastic job looking after the bar on Friday nights and to Trevor Law who has been a great help when the rush is on, or when Mel has been unable to attend. 16 Sponsor News... As announced in our May newsletter, The Basin Junior Football Club is delighted to have established a relationship with two new major sponsors the Montrose Community Bank Branch (part of the Bendigo Community Bank ) and Barry Plant Real Estate, Boronia. Both sponsors are providing significant support to the club and it is hoped that the sponsorship arrangements will not only provide a valued and positive profile for these companies, but will also support our club - and importantly our junior players - to perform at their best. The Montrose Community Bank Branch have not only provided a base sponsorship but will also provide an incentive sponsorship to the club. There has been a bit of discussion recently in regard to the use of the bottom ground for games and training. To provide some background, on the Anzac weekend the bottom ground received a number of adverse umpire reports in regard to its condition. This led to urgent discussions with the Council with urgent and ongoing works being undertaken to address the issues. This includes rolling the ground on a weekly basis, managing any holes, spraying etc. The discussions between club representatives and Council at that time determined that use should be reduced to allow the ground to recover. To this end, the seniors asked the juniors not train on the bottom ground and to not play games and for the seniors to make use of both the top and bottom ground for training. This is understandable, because if the bottom ground was to deteriorate to a point where it was unplayable, the seniors would have to move their home games. This would be devastating from a financial point of view. Both seniors and juniors would also not want to see this occur. At the same time, the club has been fortunate in that we have the top ground which has held up very well even with the increased usage. Through a combination of proactive management, very good weather and reduced usage, the condition of the ground noticeably improved. Following a discussion with the seniors at the start of June, it was established that the ground was as good as it was going to get. Further, whilst both club committees acknowledged those junior teams who were training off site, it was recognized that those arrangements would not last beyond the Queens Birthday. It was therefore agreed that the bottom ground could again be used for training on Friday nights for the younger age players (under 9s and 10s) and that if the bottom ground maintained its good state the Under 15s and 17s should be able to play matches on Sundays. At the same time, it was agreed that the management and use of the bottom ground was a day by day, week by week proposition and that if the weather was to deteriorate rapidly, and the ground was saturated, it would not be used for games for either the Under 15s or 17s. To this end, the use of the bottom ground will be evaluated by members of the junior and senior committee on Sunday mornings with a call being made accordingly. Please speak to either Ian Bell or Neil Moody if you have any queries about the grounds. Key dates to Remember...
