Term 3 Issue 9 September 8th 2016 NEWSLETTER St. Monica s Primary School 20 Robinson Street Moonee Ponds 3039 Phone (03) Faith Hope Love Parish Priest: Rev. Fr. Anthony Feeney Principal: Mr. Peter Moore Parish Office: Phone Mass Times: Saturday 6:30pm (Vigil), Sunday 8:00am, 9:15am in Italian, 10:30am and 5:30pm OSHP Number Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children, We are fast approaching the end of term, but the number of engaging events continues to make our school hum with no signs of slowing down. If you see the photos below, our little owl (maybe not so little) has finally emerged from his cypress pine log under the expert hands of our visiting sculptor Angie Polglaze. Angie s work has given the children a lot of pleasure throughout the week and we are pleased that Angie will be back after the holidays to complete The Four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Let Your Light Shine No-one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to God in heaven. Mt. 5:15-16 The St Monica's Chargers team won the U13 Section 3 Netball Grand Final at Aberfeldie on Saturday. The team consists of 7 St Monica's girls (Isabella Morello, Meg Lucas, Amy Gaylor, Alexandra Grima, Tessa Coleman, Sacha Goodear and Olivia Berlingeri) and 2 Lowther Hall girls. The girls all qualify for Under 11's and were promoted to Under 13's and to win the Grand Final was an exceptional effort. Athletics News On Thursday 1 st September our Year 4-6 competitors took part in the Essendon District Athletics Carnival held at Keilor Park track. A special thank you to Miss Hayley Marie, Rita Morello and Phil Rapisarda for their assistance on the day, and well done to all of our students on their behaviour and excellent performances. A big congratulations to the following children who qualified for the Combined Divisional Athletics trials: 9/10 years - Shauna McElligott (Discus), James Ragg (Shot Put), Samuel Day (Long Jump, 4 x 100m Relay), Lucy Ryan (200m, 4 x 100m Relay), Meg Lucas (1500m, 4 x 100m Relay), Zoe MacLaren, Christie Harding, Lachlan Gordon, Alex Di Nuzzo, Hugh Allison (4 x 100m Relay). 11 years Noah Khoury (Long Jump), Max Caputo (1500m) 12 years Alyssa Pesavento (Long Jump) After completion of the Divisional event which was held on Tuesday 6 th September, Lucy Ryan, Noah Khoury and Max Caputo have also successfully qualified for the next stage of competition, the Regional Championships to be held on Tuesday 11 th October at Keilor Park track. A special congratulations to these three competitors on their outstanding efforts. Well done St. Monica s! Mr McGuinness.

Amazing Events There have been so many events, incursions and functions over the past few weeks and we have managed to capture many photos to retell the events themselves. I would like to extend my thanks to the many parents who promoted and participated in the St. Monica s vs St. Vincent s Football Match, the Harding Family for their support of the Mark Inglis Talk, the Parents Association for the Father s Day Stall, The PEB for the Father s Day BBQ, Lesley-ann in the Parish House for the organization around Fr. Tony s Birthday, Wendy Synan for her never-ending work with our staff for the Senior School Production and those parents who have been working with us during excursions, walks, and other related activities. Happy Fathers on their Special Day This was the first year I wasn t available to take photos at the Fathers Day Stall. I thank these families for sharing their photos of the moment Dad received his presents. Thank you to all the Mums and Dads who assisted in the stall this year. Your hard work was greatly appreciated. A Surprise for Caritas It was a lovey surprise for me (and it will also be for Caritas) when Lizzie delivered her hard-earned saving to me this week. Lizzie was keen to show the school values of Faith, Hope and Love by saving money for those in need. We will hand this money over to the staff from Caritas who will use it to fund their many projects mostly for families in the developing world. I applaud Lizzie s generosity and say Well Done for thinking of others. After hearing Mark Ingles describe his ascent to the summit of Mt Everest and then describe how hard it was for him to descend with prosthetic legs, there can be no doubt that this wake up call will prevent me from complaining too much about any minor ailment I have. Every now and then it s good to reflect on how fortunate we are to have good health. Yours sincerely, Peter Moore Principal Please note: Assembly will start at 2:45pm tomorrow in the Church

Father s Day BBQ Many thanks to everyone who was involved with our Father s Day BBQ which was hosted by our Parish Education Board last Friday 2nd September. It was a fabulous evening, and great to see so many of our Dads enjoying a relaxing evening together! A particular thanks to the wonderful group of Mums who volunteered to assist with preparation, cooking, serving and packing up. A very big thank you also to the following people who assisted in making the event so successful: Lisa and Nigel Haynes of Baker s Delight, Milleara Mall for their donation of the bread Rebecca Jones and Donohue families for their donation of ice Lombardi Meats in Moonee Ponds Central for a fantastic deal on the sausages There were plenty of sausages cooked on the BBQ in order to feed the large crowd of more than 300 people, and a terrific evening was had by all! The gold coin donations were used to fund food and drinks on the night. The remaining money to be donated to the Parent s Association. Photos further in the newsletter. We thank everyone for supporting this important annual event! Parish Education Board Fathers Day Stall A big thank-you to the many parents who helped set up and sell gifts on the Fathers Day Stall this year. Special thanks to Cathy McNeill who led the team of volunteers yet again. Nearly $3,000 profit was made this year from gift sales. Great work! St Monica s Sportsman s Night last call for auction prizes! Are you or someone you know able to donate a prize for this year s Sportsman s Night on 7 October? Signed football jumpers, holidays, gift vouchers, racing, football and golf tickets are just some of the items auctioned at our last event. No item is too big or too small! A great way to promote your business to the local community, all donors will be recognised throughout the evening. Everything raised from the sale of these items goes towards the school. If you think you can help out, please get in touch with Luke Mahoney ( ) or Gerry Carew ( ). A lovely photo from our NetSetGo on Saturday morning... Our dad's played netball with us as part of our Father s Day celebrations!

St Monica's - Battle of the Saints KIDS Football Game How WELL did our St Monica's BOYS Play! They played hard to fend off a strong opposition. Until half time there was only 1 goal difference and anyone s game. Unfortunately, we didn't win but, we only had few Grade 6s playing and were up against a lot of St Vinnie's Grade 6s (many from premiership EDFL teams). Special THANKS to: Gus Gustincich (Assistant Coach); Rob Rizzo (Runner); Luke Mason (Umpire); Dom Abdo (Goal Umpire); Jack O'Farrell and Hugh Garvey (Boundary Umpires); Kathi Quick (Medico); Brian Mathews (Photographer); our Parent Cheer Squad (they were Almighty!) and Parents that juggled numerous activities to get our players to training. THANK YOU! We had 18 Great and Enthusiastic Grade 5s playing - they will no doubt be a Formidable Grade 6 team next year, and I am sure they'll bring Victory back to St Monica's! THANK YOU to all our players you did SO WELL! It was a pleasure training and coaching you! A reminder to all players that took jumpers home, please wash them and return them by the end of the week. Vince Leone Coach

St Monica's - Battle of the Saints DADS Football Game This year was the 10 year Anniversary of the St. Monica s v St. Vincent s Dad's football game. St. Vincent s hosted this year and the game was played at Oak Park Football Club. History showed St. Monica s winning the first 4 and then St. Vincent s winning the last 5 years. Last year St Monica's kicked 1 goal and lost by close to 100 points. This was the catalyst for With renewed energy we set about getting the cup back in Moonee Ponds. Word of mouth, text messages, whatsapp, the school newsletter and were used to attract dads this year. Luke Mahoney was appointed Playing Coach, Ben Hogan as Captain and Paul Barlow as Team Manager. The first training session was held 8 weeks out at Windy Hill with 8 Dad's turning up. The following fortnight 26 turned up and the following fortnight we had 36 train along with the support of wives and kids and drinks and finger food upstairs. The tone was set. As the numbers grew so did the confidence. With so many new faces and some impressive form on the track there was a good feeling amongst the group. This was helped by St. Vincent s concerns regarding our numbers and training sessions. With a final Wednesday night training session at NOBS, followed by dinner and team selection we were ready. Our motto this year was "no mercy" Saturday arrived with close to perfect playing conditions and 36 players ready to go. The change rooms had no room to move. We continued the St. Monica s tradition of ensuring every player was hydrated with a special drink. It was fair to say Coach Mahn's, Runner Poffa (Peter O'Farrell) and Board Man Jonesy (Brendan Jones) had their work cut out with rotations. The 1st quarter started extremely well and by the end of it we had kicked more goals in a quarter than we had in 2 years. The 2nd quarter was a more even contest and at half time scores were level. A good old fashioned spray from coach Mahn's and some changes to the side meant we were primed for the "premiership quarter". After 8 years at St. Monica s Scott Lucas finally made his debut - thanks Georgina for nominating him. The 3rd quarter was the Scotty Lucas show. At 3/4 time we had a 6 goal lead and victory was in our sights. Daniel Harris from St. Vincent s did his best with 2 early goals but the St. Monica s Dad's kicked away and when the final siren sounded we were 39 points in front. Some special mentions go to Mark Lambertini who was everywhere, Michael Di Nuzzo made his debut and impressed, Elton Stevens for harassing Daniel Harris all day, Wally Makdesi for controlling his wing, Aaron Palmer and Josh Akers for game saving tackles in the backline, our inspirational skipper Hogi and a late cameo from the coach Luke Mahoney who racked up possessions after some early clangers. A highlight of the day was Paul Barlow marking strongly 25 meters out with only minutes remaining in front of the St. Monica s faithful. Much to the displeasure of the crowd his efforts were touched on the line. Final scores: St. Monica s def St. Vincent s Goal Kickers: S.Lucas 8, R.Rizzio, E.Stevens, A.Jordan, J.Vandrine 1 each. Best Players: M.Lambertini, S.Lucas, B.Hogan, E.Stevens, A.Jordan, T.Fleming. This year for the first time we awarded our best player voted by the coaches the Brock/Harding Medal. This is in honor of Paul Brock and Peter Harding who have participated in all 10 games. Well done Lambo on winning the medal. A big thank-you must go to the St. Monica s community for supporting the day and outnumbering the hosting team. To all the Dad's that trained and played we look forward to another big event next year as hosts at St. Bernard s College. Congratulations on bringing the Cup back to Moonee Ponds. Ben Hogan, Paul Barlow and Luke Mahoney

Teachers who love teaching teach students to love learning! Here are some examples of passionate teaching and learning' at St Monica's this week! Awesome Events! What an action packed week.full of awesome events! The conversations amongst the students about how they have been inspired by Mark Inglis has been so powerful...add the exceptional sportsmanship displayed at the Battle of the Saints football matches..don t forget to include the mind blowing skills of Angela Polglaze and her wood carving...no words can truly describe the benefits of these learning opportunities. Check out the photographs throughout this edition of the newsletter! Go Bombers! It is hard to keep a secret from Year 4 students...they knew they were having a guest speaker...but who was it going to be! To their surprise..it was Anthony McDonald - Tipungwutis. He is a current Essendon footballer, originally from the Tiwi Islands. He was able to discuss his story and his Indigenous culture, which linked to their current History Inquiry Unit. Planning Week! The staff have been working tirelessly this week planning for next term! There are some very exciting lessons being organised.such as wrapping Christmas presents for procedural writing and using Light boxes to discover the colours of the rainbow! Colonial Show To conclude the unit on Australian Colonies and to follow up from their amazing expo last week, the Year 5 students participated in a captivating incursion called, The Colonial Show. Many a student and staff member couldn t help but sneak a peek into the hall as the enthusiasm oozing out was enticing!

Walla It was a privilege for Year 4 to meet Anthony McDonald Tipungwuti (Walla as he likes to be known, Tippa to his fans) last Thursday as part of our History - First Contacts Inquiry unit. He was joined by his mother, Jane McDonald, and Essendon Football Club staff member, Bernard Shepheard, an ex St Monica s student. He shared with us something of his culture from the Tiwi Islands (Bathurst and Melville Islands). We learnt the Dreamtime story about the blind lady which explained why the islands became separated from the mainland and then the two islands were formed. It was news to us that the Tiwis don t play the didgeridoo, but the totem is so important to them. They don t eat witchetty grubs, but like to hunt for pigs, buffalo, possum, turtle and they like to fish. Anthony also spoke of the importance of the Missionaries who come to the Tiwi Islands to spread the word of Jesus. Jane told us that Anthony s late father, Giovanni Tipungwuti, is a famous Tiwi artist whose work is in the National Gallery in Canberra. Anthony emphasised that even though he is of Tiwi background and we may have European, Asian or British background for example, we are all Australian, we are one. That is very evident through Anthony s very multicultural family today. Jane emphasised - we are one family, we are not different. The Tiwi language is one of the 65 or so Aboriginal languages still in use today and as a result, when Anthony came to Victoria, he had to learn English as a 16 year old. Like each of us, Anthony continues to learn new words each day. Their culture is a rich culture and a love of Australian Rules Football is evident as it is just about the only game the kids play. Would you believe, when they don t have a football to play with, they use a..coke bottle! Jane said their skills playing footy with a Coke bottle were unbelievable. Cyril Rioli would be the most famous current Tiwi Islander playing AFL right now but Anthony didn t get to play against him this year. Anthony s family live around the country Melbourne now, Drouin, Sydney (where his father went to pursue his Art) and of course, the Tiwi Islands. It was an honour for me (Zane Raciti) to be able to invite and organise for Anthony to visit my classmates last week (with my mum s help). He has gained more fans I am sure through his very friendly manner and eagerness to answer a range of questions from Year 4.

With Luke This week we will be analyzing have of the All Australian team for The all Australian team is the best 22 players in every position that get selected so for example Alex Rance was the best full back and Josh Kennedy was the best full forward this year and it works like that throughout all of the 22 players (except the interchange). The first players we will be looking at play in the full back line made up of 2 back pockets and one full back. The first back pocket was Dane Rampe from Sydney. Dane had never been all Australian before and this year seemed to be his break out year. He debuted in 2013 after being picked up in the rookie draft and has since then played 94 games and played all of the Swans 22 games this year and was one of Sydney s 5 All Australians. The next player is Richmond s saviour on a number of occasions - Alex Rance. Alex was drafted in 2007 and has since played 150 games and this has been his 3 rd All Australian, he played 20 games this year having 212 kicks averaging 10.6, 161 handballs averaging 8.1, 155 amount of marks averaging 7.8 and 373 disposals averaging The next player is one of West Coast s two All Australians - Jeremy McGovern to round out the full backline who was drafted in the 2011 rookie draft and played 21 games this year. Last year he was one of West Coast s many shining stars in their Grand Final year. After West Coast s two best tall defenders were injured Jeremy was asked to stand in as the full back and did an amazing job. This year he flew under the radar a bit with a lot of experts forgetting this man and the talent he had. Now taking a look at the half back line it is Heath Shaw. Heath was drafted by Collingwood at pick 48 under the father son and has played 235 games and 22 games this year. After leaving Collingwood his career has since turned around after winning the Giants best and fairest and becoming all Australian last year. He is one very funny guy and a great club man. Often runs through teams off the half back line collecting an average of 24.5 disposals. Now we will take a look at Adelaide young star Daniel Talia. Daniel has played 120 games since he debuted in 2009 and played 22 games this year. After Daniel won the Ron Evens medal, or the rising star award in 2012, Daniel has never looked back. He is a young star who plays on the opponent s best defender each week and always does a fantastic job. This is his second All Australian and looks to have many more of these awards in years to come. The next player we are about to look at is a Geelong legend and is a multiple All Australian who goes by the name of Corey Enright. The Geelong record games holder has played 330 games, which is a club record since being drafted in 1999, he has played 21 games this year. He was All Australian in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and again this year. He will go down as a Geelong great and this year he could add to his 3 premierships. He is not slowing down, still having 23.8 disposals a game which is his highest average since 2010 and 5.9 marks a game which is his highest average since Now moving onto the Midfield we have a Sydney Swans player Dan Hannebery. Dan was as some considered, denied the 2012 Norm Smith Medal after playing a magnificent game in the grand final. This year he is considered an outside chance to win the Brownlow after playing at an elite level with 31.3 disposals a game, he is ranked 6th in the AFL for inside 50s per game AFL (an inside 50 is when you kick or handball the ball into the ark which is 50 metres from your goal), 16.9 handballs per game which he is ranked 7 th in the AFL for. He is also considered a leader at the swans and a great club man. The next player is another elite player and leader at the Sydney Swans which is Josh Kennedy. Josh was drafted by Hawthorn under the father son rule in 2006 and has played 179 games since, this year he played 21 games. Josh is a player who always flies under the radar at Sydney with guys like Lance Franklin and Dan Hannebery there and always tends to get a lot of votes when it comes to Brownlow night. He is grandson of legendary Hawthorn coach John Kennedy and son of John Kennedy Junior who is a four time premiership coach. He has almost 8 clearances per game, he is considered elite because he is 2 nd in the AFL for clearances (which is when you get the ball of a pack to one of your players) averages 18.5 handballs per game which is the 3 rd most in the AFL. The next player is the vice-captain of the team, Rory Sloane. Rory has played 139 games since being drafted in 2008 and played 21 games this year. Rory has had the expectations to perform this year after Patrick Dangerfield left the crows last year. This year however he could poll well in the brownlow but won t be able to win it after he was suspended in the second last game of the season. Rory then tweeted out the he should have challenged the decision because many people believe that he was unlucky to be suspended. This year has been his break out year leading the crows to 5 th positions after the traumatic circumstances of last year when the coach Phil Walsh was killed Now onto the forward line which we kick it off with Toby Greene. Toby was drafted by the Giants in the club s first year in The giants then played their first game in round one of 2012 against the Swans. Toby has since played 96 games and has played 21 games this year. This is his first year as All Australian and one of the Giant s two players. He is one of the best goal sneaks in the AFL and if you let him go he can kick a bag of goals. He is also 1 of 2 Giant s players who made the All Australian. The next player is a Sydney Swans fan favorite Lance Buddy Franklin. Lance was drafted by the Hawks in 2004 and has since played 243 games, this year he has played 22 games. Buddy was back to his best this year kicking 74 goals at 3.4 per game and is another one of Sydney s 5 All Australians. The next player is 4 time premiership player and last year s Norm Smith medalist Cyril Rioli. Cyril was drafted in 2007 and played in a premiership in his first year, since then he has played 176 games and this year he played 19 games. He was extra special this year winning a game with a kick outside 50 on his birthday to win the game. He is the only Hawthorn player to be in this All Australian team which seems weird for a team to finish third and only have one All Australian. Imagine where the Hawks would have finished if they had decent players in their team.
