1 Term 4 Issue 1 October 3rd 2016 NEWSLETTER St. Monica s Primary School 20 Robinson Street Moonee Ponds 3039 Phone (03) Faith Hope Love Parish Priest: Rev. Fr. Anthony Feeney Principal: Mr. Peter Moore Parish Office: Phone Mass Times: Saturday 6:30pm (Vigil), Sunday 8:00am, 9:15am in Italian, 10:30am and 5:30pm OSHP Number Dear Parents, Caregivers and Children, It has been wonderful to see so many smiles since we returned from the holidays. I m glad and grateful that everyone has returned safely after a well-earned rest. This weekend we begin the first of our First Communion Masses and I ask everyone to pray for the 2016 Year 3 First Communion Candidates as they prepare for this important milestone in their lives. There will be 11 First Communion Masses over the month of October and at each of these Masses, a number of school staff members will be present to celebrate the school s involvement with the Parish Program. We are within five weeks of being handed over our newly-refurbished Senior Learning Centre and I might have to look at a few episodes of The Block on catch-up TV so that I know how to run The Big Reveal. The painters will move in next week, followed by the carpet installers. Most of the joinery is already installed. It s going to be an amazing experience for the children to see what transformations have taken place in these spaces. I d like to pass on a big Thank You to the staff who led the Year 5 Camp in the last three days of Term 3. It was a very successful experience for all of the children and I acknowledge with gratitude that in order for the camp top take place, staff have to give up home-life for three days. They always do it with a big smile and I am grateful for their dedication. A special thank you to Mrs. Gaye Mifsud for leading the camp. Congratulations to all the Bulldogs supporters who will no doubt be celebrating for the remainder of the year. I was on a plane retuning from Tokyo during the entire duration of the game and I have never seen such puzzled looks from the Japanese people on board when the Captain gave updates on the scores. The thunderous applause from the Australians on board confused them even more. It s great to be back. Regards and best wishes, Peter Moore Principal

5 From Fr. Tony Dear Parents and Fellow Parishioners, I write inform you of the fact that we have been advised by the National Australia Bank (NAB) that the manual system we at present use for thanksgiving credit card deductions is no longer available. The Parish Office is now, with the help of NAB, in the process of setting up a new automated system which will commence for credit card deductions scheduled on 30 th September. We currently have in excess of 200 families/individuals who contribute to thanksgiving via monthly or quarterly credit card deductions. To facilitate a smooth transition to the new automated system we have to ensure all credit care information is up to date, hence I write, asking everyone who supports the Parish Thanking via deductions from their credit card, would you, please, update the below credit card details via (1) (parish address is mooneeponds@cam.org.au), (2) ringing the Parish ( ) or (3) calling in and leaving the details with the Parish Secretary. The details required are: Name on Credit Card.. Credit Card 16 digit number Credit Card Expiry Date. Contact Telephone Number Thank you for your help in this matter and for your continued financial support of our Parish. Fr. Tony
6 Let Your Light Shine! No-one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to God in heaven. Mt. 5:15-16 During the school holiday's the Henderson and Walsh children participated in the 5km fun run course of the Harrietville Half Marathon event. Bridget Henderson finished 4th in her age group (8-12 years girls). In the 4-7 years boy s age group Daniel Henderson completed the 5km run in just 33min30sec finishing in 1st place, and Harrison Walsh finished in 2nd place. Claire Walsh finished in 1st place in her 4-7 years girls age group, and was the youngest competitor in the event. My name is Lexie Liddell and I am in 4T. About 3 to 4 months ago I learnt of a cancer kids program that saw donated hair being fashioned into hair pieces/wigs and being gifted to cancer kids who had lost their hair because of their cancer treatments. There was a minimum length required and I spent a lot of time and energy researching methods that would speed up hair growth. I was very passionate and was taking nutrients (3 in the morning before school and 3 at night before going to bed) as well as numerous other treatments. Over the holidays I cut my hair into 4 plaits to give to charity. I wanted to give it to one of the cancer girls. The hair then gets made into a wig and they can then wear it and style it and I thought it would be fun for them like it was for me. My mum Nikki and I will be attending the Royal Children s Hospital to hand over/gift her hair in next few weeks.
7 Teachers who love teaching teach students to love learning! Here are some examples of passionate teaching and learning' at St Monica's this week! Have you filled a bucket today? Have you ever read the book, Have you filled a bucket today? It is personally one of my all time favourites. It talks about whether you are a bucket filler or a bucket dipper. Can you infer from these words what that might mean? In this picture, you can see two students standing in front of their classroom display, where each student has their own bucket. Together the classes used the A - Z thinking strategy to brainstorm examples of being a bucket filler. For example, A for appreciate others, C for give a compliment or M for use your manners. How will you be a bucket filler today? Hip Hop! I had fun showcasing a few of my own hip hop moves during the Year 1 Performing Arts lesson! Zero My Hero! After the launch of Ms Rogers new app, the Year 6 students were caught playing the app and revisiting their place value skills! GATEWAYS Challenge Eight students from Year 3 and Year 4 (Henry Smith, Chloe Medic, Donny Conidi, Annabelle Bayona, Myles Quick, Lachlan Monger, Lachlan Gordon and Noah Storace) travelled out to Ivanhoe Grammar on Wednesday 5 October to represent St Monica's in the GATEWAYS Challenge. Solving a crime, mining for gems, designing a mini golf course and acting out moments in History were just some of the activities they completed! A great day - well done everyone!

10 ST. MON S TIPSTERS 2016 At the beginning of the AFL season a few Year 1 families got together to enter a footy tipping competition. After inviting the rest of the school to join us, St. Mons Tipsters had 35 families competing to be crowned the best tipster at school. The competition was fierce with the frequent changes to the leader board throughout the season. Many families were in contention right up until the final round with first place eventually being won by the slimmest of margins. Awesome trophies and generous cash prizes were awarded to 1 st 2 nd and 3 rd place. A fabulous wooden spoon was handed to our last place getter who may need to reconsider her strategy of tipping for the entire season in Round 1! Special mention goes to Anthony Jordan who was placed in the top three throughout the entire competition only to end up without a prize in 4 th place! Third place was taken out from the other side of the world with Rose Greco still managing to out tip most of the field all the way from Italy. WINNERS ARE GRINNERS! Ange Horton with her prized wooden spoon. 1 st Place winner, Melissa Humann. 2 nd place getter, Abygaile Cukavac and our globetrotting 3 rd place stealer Rose Greco, all proudly showing off their prizes. St. Mon s Tipsters will be back in 2017 and we would love you all to join us is promising to be a great year for AFL football with the incredible Western Bulldogs as reigning premiers and our local Essendon Bombers back at full strength. The trophies will be better, the prizes will be bigger, there may even be a presentation ceremony and we will definitely be raising funds to support our school. Thank you again to all of those who joined us in 2016 see you all in 2017! xo Felicity Jordan & Sharon Lourdes (Harry Jordan & Violet Adams 1B)

15 With Luke This week s article we will be going back and taking a look at my finals prediction that I made half way through this year and taking a look at how the finals played out. If you take a look down below I have listed what I predicted. I will be starting from the top and working my way down. First place I had Geelong. When I made this prediction I thought that Geelong would not lose a game for the rest of the season but after losses to St Kilda and Sydney they slipped down to 2 nd. Next is GWS which was a surprise to see in the top 2 with a home final in my predictions but they ended up finishing 4 th. At the time when I wrote this article GWS were 5 th and they managed to lose only two games to Collingwood and West Coast which bumped them up to 4 th. They should be considered lucky to even be in the top 4 because Adelaide who were sitting 2 nd with a round to go lost at home to West Coast which put them down to 5 th giving GWS 2 nd place. This next is a prediction I got correct and it was Hawthorn to finish 3 rd. Mid way through the year Hawthorn looked set to finish top and was in the box seat to win their 4 th premiership in a row. However the Hawthorn ship started to look shaky with two losses to Melbourne and West Coast and a one point win to Collingwood. Their first final resulted in a two point loss to Geelong and a loss to the Bulldogs meaning that they did not win a game in the finals. My third place prediction was Adelaide. This tip with a week left looked like it could very nearly happen with the Crows in the top 4 for most of the season but with a game to go they lost it. They went in favorites to win the game but they lost to West Coast at home without their best player Rory Sloane. They had a successful first final with a 62 point win over North Melbourne but the following week they were demolished by Sydney. Now next is a tip I got very wrong it was Sydney to finish 5 th. At the end of the home and away season they finished on top of the ladder after losing to the raining premiers Hawthorn and the eventual premiers the Bulldogs. Overall for the Swans they had a good finals series after losing their first final to GWS and then coming back to play in the Grand Final but ended up losing. Next we have the premiers, the Western Bulldogs. After losing their leader Bob Murphy and multiple others to injuries the bulldogs won the Grand Final. They ended up finishing 7 th and made the Grand Final. The Bulldogs are now the only team to come from outside the top 4 and make the Grand Final. Next I predicted West Coast to come 7 th. The Eagles struggled to win games at the start of the year but by the end of the year they strung a few wins together against Hawthorn and Adelaide and they finished 6 th. The runners up from last year s grand final ended up losing to the Bulldogs in the first round of the finals and were knocked out. The next tip I made was a correct one, North Melbourne to finish 8 th. After round nine, North had not lost a game after playing most of the bottom ten sides. They then started to play the top 8 sides and did not beat a top 8 side after round 6. They then got smashed by Adelaide in their first final and were knocked out. Now we will take a look at the finals series and how it played out. The team that finished 1 st played the team that finished 4 th which in this case was GWS and Sydney, 2 nd will play 3 rd which in this case was Hawthorn and Geelong and these two matches are called the Qualifying Finals and the loser will not be knocked out of finals but the winner will go through into the preliminary final. Next it is 5 th against 8 th which in this case was Adelaide against North and 6 th against 7 th which in this case was The West Coast Eagles and The Bulldogs, the loser of these finals will be knocked out and the winner will play the loser of the qualifying finals.
16 In the first week the Bulldogs stunned us all after beating West Coast in Perth and capturing all of our hearts. Geelong however downed the Hawks by two points after Isaac Smith missed a shot after the siren to win the game. GWS sent a shock wave through the competition beating Sydney by 36 points and North sent three of its champions packing after a loss to Adelaide by 62 points. The Winner of the 5 th VS 8 th finals will play the loser of the 1 st VS 4 th final which in this case was Adelaide and the Swans, and the winner of the 6 th VS 7 th will play the loser of the 2 nd VS 3 rd final which in this case was Hawthorn and the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs did the competition a favor beating the Hawks by 23 points and Sydney beat Adelaide by 26 points. The next week of the finals the Bulldogs were to play GWS who had the week off and Sydney were to play Geelong who had the week off. The Bulldogs made it into their first Grand final since 1961 after beating GWS away and Sydney were into their 3rd Grand Final in 4 years. While the Swans were the favourites after a strong win against Geelong, most commentators overlook the fact that the Swans allowed Geelong into their forward 50 more than 70 times. When you have greater than 60 inside 50s you should expect to win, had it not been for the Swans good defence they could have lost. This would prove to be the Swans undoing when the Bulldogs, whose mid field bats deeper and is faster than Geelong s, where able to get the ball into their forward 50 at speed and kick to multiple targets. It felt like Australia Vs Sydney in the Grand Final with the Swans getting the first goal in the Grand Final. The Bulldogs hit back and got two goals to lead by 4 points at quarter time. The Bulldogs then started to kick away getting out to a 15 point lead but the Swans start studded midfield, led by Josh Kennedy, got on top to lead by 2 goals only for it to be cut back by a late Bulldogs goal. The Swans lead by 2 points going into half time. The third quarter is known as the premiership quarter and the teams went goal for goal in a see-sawing affair. The Bulldogs came out on top at three quarter time, leading by 8 points. The 4 th quarter started with a goal to Lance Franklin followed by Jake Stringer from the Bulldogs and George Hewitt from the Swans. A controversial behind to Jason Johannsen after a searching run could have broken the Bulldogs hearts but they held tough and kicked 3 of the last 4 goals to win the game by 22 points and the Bulldogs broke a 62 year drought. And to think it all starts again in less than 5 months time. At that time all teams will be even and all supporters will have hope in their hearts that their team can perform in Thank you to Mr Moore and Mr Di Nuzzo for allowing me to write these articles during the year Luke Mathews Floreat Pica (google it) Round 13 Position Predicted Position Final Position at round 23 Team 1st 1st 2nd Geelong 5th 2nd 4th GWS 4th 3rd 3rd Hawthorn 8th 4th 5th Adelaide 2nd 5th 1st Sydney 6th 6th 7th Western Bulldogs 7th 7th 6th West Coast 3rd 8th 8th North Melbourne 11th 9th 14th Carlton 9th 10th 10th Port Adelaide 10th 11th 11th Melbourne 13th 12th 13th Richmond 12th 13th 9th St Kilda 14th 14th 12th Collingwood 15th 15th 16th Fremantle 16th 16th 15th Gold Coast 18th 17th 18th Essendon 17th 18th 17th Brisbane
