1 MAGPIE NEWS Edition 14 May Welcome to Edition Fourteen of MAGPIE NEWS. The first edition for 2014 promises to be the same hard hitting, insightful & accurate read as always. Someone said something about a small little Rodeo during the preseason, what did I miss? Belt buckles, cowboy hats & plenty of bundy cans is what I was told. Congratulations to the angry red head Chris Laverty who reached the 200 game milestone in Round 1. He continues to punch above his weight & is an inspiration for the Bluey community. New faces, old faces, highs & lows this edition has it all so please pass it on to all members of the magpie community. As a wise man once said Get strapped early Enjoy the read Go Pies!! 2 FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK Hi folks and thanks for your support so far this year. Six games in and all teams in both codes are competing very well at this early stage of the season. You ll see from some of the photos that we had a very successful fund raiser on March 1st. It s not every year a Rodeo comes to town and thankfully the greater Sale community were just as curious as us and came out in droves and supported the event. A big thank you to the organizing committee, headed up by Lisa, for the countless hours in preparing for this event. It wasn t easy but well worth the headaches and we are now well placed to have another crack at it next year. Round 17. We are holding a Phantom Races night, more details will come out soon but think Melbourne Cup, we re wanting all the fillies & colts to dress up as though their attending the races and it promises to be a great night of entertainment. Cheers and Go Pies!! Pearcey I d like to make special mention to the new coaches this season. Tracey Grubb, Jane Baker, Kasey McKay, Shane Fyfe & Clayton Kelly who have all put their hands up this season. Good luck for the season and I hope everyone gives them their full support & assistance when asked during the year. Back for another year is Stewie Thomas heading up our training department along with Greg, Bricko, Pip and we welcome Emma Goodsell to the team. From week to week the numbers fluctuate so please if you can lend a hand please don t be shy and ask if you can help out because the answer will most definitely be YES! It was with great sadness that we farewelled club legend Rob Foster earlier in the year. Having been a stalwart at the club for many years and serving many different roles it won t quite be the same not seeing him on the hill or at past players functions. But his legacy will live on in the form of the Rob Foster Players MVP Award. It was very pleasing that the current day players came up with an idea to honor Rob & the Foster family and now after every game the senior players vote on who they thought best typified the awards criteria with the winner to be announced at presentation night. Looking ahead we have the annual raffle draw on Sunday 22nd June. Its always a great day so make sure you get a ticket so you can come enjoy the bbq & drinks on us. We plan to have some impromptu gatherings after some home games but at this stage our next official social function isn t until Darren Chester FEDERAL MEMBER FOR GIPPSLAND

3 BLAST FROM THE PAST STRIPES OR YOLKS? When the Latrobe Valley Football League was formed in 1954, the eight foundation clubs were located on the main railway line from Melbourne, beginning at Warragul, then Yarragon, Trafalgar, Moe, Yallourn, Morwell, Traralgon and finally Sale. The LVFL became the premier football league in Gippsland, and remains so until this day, although having its name changed recently to the Gippsland League. A conflict emerged at the outset when it was found that Yarragon and Sale had the same style uniform design black and white vertical stripes. Sale elected to change their jumper to a black jumper with a white yolk. This style remained until the mid sixties when the club opted to revert back to the original stripes as Yarragon had departed from the LVFL in The majority of supporters in those days travelled to football matches by train. The eight clubs had seniors and seconds in the competition until 1957 when a Thirds competition was introduced - east & west divisions, the matches being played on Sundays. The 1950 s was a monumental era for the Magpies, winning the first two premierships in 1954 & 55 then followed up with more flags in 1957 & 59 - that made it four flags in six years. Then a 12 year drought set in until the next flag came in The club also boasted two Trood Award & Rodda Medal winners Bob Mason in 1954 & 55, then John Nix in A number of Sale players played in multiple premiership sides: J.Hart, T.Hart, R.Mason, each played in four each, R. Greenwood, M.King, A.Morrow, K.Stanley, A.Schuback, and L.Wyld played in three each. Seven other players played in two of the fifties premierships. Six fifties premiership players were recruited by VFL clubs included Alan. Morrow, Bill Stephenson (St Kilda), Ian Brewer (Collingwood), Ian Collins (Carlton). Harry Alexander (Sth Melbourne), and Ray Dawson (Melbourne). The LVFL had some monumental clashes with other Victorian premier leagues: Bendigo, Ballarat, Wimmera, Hampden, and Oven & Murray. Sale had a many players selected in these games, and John Nix and Jim Hart coached the LVFL sides with success. The powerful clubs in the early days were Warragul, Yallourn, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Sale. New clubs to join the LVFL in the sixties were Drouin, Maffra, Stratford, Bairnsdale, and later on Leongatha and Wonthaggi. Some of these left and have since returned: Drouin, Warragul, Wonthaggi, and Bairnsdale. A number of LVFL clubs came and went Yarragon, Trafalgar, Stratford, and Yallourn who became Yallourn/Yallourn Nth, Heyfield, Churchill, Newborough and Traralgon Tyers United. At the recent Past Players & officials reunion a suggestion was made by a number of people that a heritage game be played with Sale wearing the old black with white yolk jumper. 4 Coach s Corner Season 2014 presents a new team, new challenges and a senior squad that has plenty of fire in the belly after a very disappointing end to last years campaign. After two strong seasons we have managed to keep our list together, we now have sixteen players who have played more than 50 senior games for Sale which is a great show of strength and loyalty amongst our group. Our biggest challenge is getting our best side on the Park on any given week and getting continuity into our team. Many of our current list having commitments outside our club which are out of our control. Things such as offshore work, VFL commitments and also Gippsland Power. Sale football club is the most represented club at Gippsland Power which is a huge credit to our junior coaches and development programs. This year we also promoted Luke Collins, Shannen Lange and Ryan Pendlebury to VFL lists which shows that playing at Sale even after missing the AFL draft can be a stepping stone to footy at the highest level. Our season so far, we have shown some very promising signs with some gutsy wins over quality opposition. Going forward will definitely be a juggling act in terms of selection but my policy of playing the best available team each week will stand. We put no limitations on what we can achieve this year as a group and our determination is self evident to this point. All grades are showing potential to play finals footy and I wish everyone the best of luck for the second half of the year. 5 Netball News Kevin Hogan has proudly announced that this is the first time in all his years at the Sale Netball Football Club, that all netball teams are playing very competitively and achieving great results in the Gippsland League competition. This displays that the level of structure that has been set in place is providing results from U13 s right through to the A Grade. The Club is not only providing sound netball ethics and learning, but also creating a strong stepping stone towards the elite level of Netball, commencing at the senior level and filtering right through to our junior ranks. Part of this structure required our coaches to be accredited. In February our club hosted a Netball Victoria Coaching accreditation course for interested coaches in Gippsland. We are now proud to advise that all our SFNC coaches hold an accredited level of coaching along with our umpires all being fully graded. The new K.J Hogan Netball Facility has recently acquired seating, which is providing valuable viewing areas for players and spectators. Our change rooms have also increased in size, to enable the girls to change, stretch and warm up out of the weather.the crowd numbers are increasing, even though the weather hasn t been so kind to us this season. I would like to extend a big Thank you to all players, families and sponsors who helped out with the rodeo, which proved to be hugely successful for our Club. Our recent Fundraiser, is a Pie Drive. 6 NETBALLERS SHINE Lara Dunkley & Kate Eddy continue their rise to reach the top by being selected in the Victorian Flames Open Team in the Australian Netball League. Both girls recently competed in the National Championships in the Victorian U19 team with Kate earning selection in the Australian U21 team. The ANL gives netball fans around the country the chance to see some of the best young talent in action in a seven week competition over July-August. For the players it s a fantastic opportunity to test their skills in an elite competition that bridges the gap between State Leagues and the ANZ Championship (Melbourne Vixens). Whilst this limits their appearances for our A Grade this season we wish nothing but success for the girls on this outstanding achievement. Our club actively encourages its players to play at the highest level possible in football & netball and it s great to see these young girls following their dreams. SUNNY SIDE UP 2014 National Draft, Round 1 pick 20 Gold Coast Suns = Jack Leslie. Big Jack is now living out every kid s dream by being drafted to an AFL team and not to just any old team but to one that boasts little Gazza Ablett!! The Gold Coast might sound a long way from the dairy farm in Nambrok but that hasn t stopped the Leslie family from making the trek north to watch him play. He s going along nicely and so are the Sunnies, we look forward to following Jack s progress.
