2 The NSDA, Elizabeth Avenue, Newmarket, Suffolk, CB8 0DJ Dear Club Member, Christmas & New Year now seem like a long distant memory and we are now thinking about Easter! The Christmas parties were a great success, enjoyed by all and we even had a surprise visit from Father Christmas. A huge thank you to everyone involved. We also held a Quiz Night at the clubhouse last month which proved very popular and was great to see representations from both the Mini, Youth & Senior Sections..One Club!! The Social Committee have a number of events planned for the next few weeks so please check the Newmarket Rugby Club Youth Social Events facebook page, the Newmarket Rugby Club website and s from your team co-ordinators for regular updates. Scaltback & Clubhouse Update January 2016 We like to keep you all updated with the progress for the development of the club and this is the latest news we have.i m sure you ll all agree this is exciting news! Suffolk County Council has agreed to grant the NSDA / Newmarket Rugby Club a 25 year lease, covering all of the green space at Scaltback. Heads of Terms have, broadly, been agreed and respective solicitors are working on the detail. A separate lease will be granted to a third party operator for those school buildings which remain after demolition works are completed: this lease will cover the area currently occupied by the footprint of the existing school buildings, including perimeter pathways. Once all of this is completed, and Suffolk County Council is keen to get this finalised at the earliest opportunity, we will then be in a position to formulate a sustainable plan for the club. As matters progress, we will keep the membership updated with any developments but please be patient, since these things have a habit of apparently lying dormant before coming at us thick and fast! 3 Mini & Youth Christmas Parties 2016 If there is one God like thing we at the rugby club are capable of doing its changing the weather No matter what time of the year it is we are able to guarantee 1 thing when it comes to organizing events, RAIN! The Christmas parties were no exception, the youth committee organized dates and tickets and were quietly confident the weather would hold out due to the mild run up to the event, O how wrong we were! Minis With the wind whistling through the tent, threatening to turn the theme of our Parties in to the Wizard of Oz we welcomed 30 children from the U7s-U9s section alongside parents and siblings. The music was playing and the Christmas spirit was showing. Magician Wayne Goodman was keeping the crowd entertained with an impressive array of tricks and magic suitable for the whole audience while Santa s helpers provided a Christmas buffet of hot dogs, Pizzas, cakes, crisps and mince pies. Now for the main Event, Santa! Now here at NRUFC we like to think we have a special relationship with Santa so we were thrilled when he made a special effort to come and say hello to the minis. He chatted and gave out presents to all the children including siblings. After a couple of hours of fun, magic and games we waved goodbye to some happy children (and parents!). This was a process we repeated again for the U10s-U12s and were very pleased to see that the older children had managed to cling on to that childhood Christmas magic and really get involved with the magician and having some fun. Youths With the Minis parties finished we welcomed our 3 rd and final party of the day in the form of The Youth Section. Unfortunately, Santa was very busy and couldn t stick around for this one so we had a quiz instead. As you can see from the pictures we managed to squeeze everyone in and ply them with food and drink (non alcoholic of course) while they year groups battled against each other for bragging rights. Fresh off the rugby pitches we were delighted when Senior Team Manager Ray Richardson & 1 st Team Captain Simon Guenigault brought their team back to support the event and join in the fun. After the quiz was completed it was the U14 team who proved to be the Brains of the outfit and so now have the right to gloat until the next battle. The Youth Social Committee would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to the events. It is our aim to continue to bring the youth section together through events and fun activities that everyone can enjoy. We are always open to new ideas and would welcome anyone who feels they would like to join us in helping make these events happen. The money raised from this event is being used to help refurbish the existing clubhouse so look out for the changes that are happening thanks to your support and involvement.

5 Team Kit & Swap Shop We are now running a Swap Shop for donated kit which is proving a hit! We will be running every Sunday and currently have a good selection of rugby boots. If you have any kit to donate please drop it off at the club house bagged and labelled. All monies towards club house improvements. We do hold a small selection of kit at the club where we offer a try before you buy. Tina Parsley looks after the youth teams and Bev Kelleher looks after the Minis. First team Kit news and pics Saturday 5th December last year saw Newmarket First XV unveil its new shirt. presented to the team by Peter Noone, the Executive Chairman of Chemtest. It was Peter said, We have been the main first team sponsor for around 8 years now and Chemtest is proud to sponsor the Newmarket Rugby Club. 7 Easter Eggstravaganza for the Mini s There will be an Easter egg hunt with an Easter egg for all the children, a raffle for a giant chocolate bunny, face painting, colouring competition and there is also a rumour that the actual Easter Bunny will be paying us a visit!! We are also holding a cake stall to raise funds so if everybody could donate some cakes to sell please all donations can be left at the clubhouse on the morning of the event. We look forward to seeing you there!!!

8 With Saracens sitting at the top of the table and only having lost one game.to Harlequins. The game promises to be an important fixture in the rugby calender! Saracens have been kind enough to allow us to reserve a block booking of seats for the whole club to sit together and have invited the Mini and Youth sections to take part in the Pride in unity parade. This is a unique opportunity to walk around the pitch, usually whilst the players are warming up, to get the first feel of what its like to be a player in the stadium. It really is a special occaison for the youngsters that will create a special memory. 9 This season Newmarket Rugby Union Football Club celebrates its 60th anniversary. The Club was formed in 1956, drawing its players from a wide cross section of the community in Newmarket. For the first twelve seasons the Club led a nomadic existence, using hired pitches in nearby villages and changing in local clubs and pubs. In 1969 The Club moved to the present Scaltback site. The clubhouse was built in 1974 and was shared with other sporting and recreational clubs. With the demise of the school the club is currently negotiating a new lease and plans to built a new club house in the next few years. For the first seven seasons, the Club ran only one team and grew to two sides in 1964 after recruiting a number of young players from the local secondary school. The core of the current 1st team comprises young players who had progressed through from the junior teams, an aspect of which the club is proud. Youth and mini rugby was launched in 1978 and has grown successfully to a point where the Club can offer rugby to all age groups from 7 to 15 years. For the 2015/16 season, the Mini and Youth Section boasts more than 300 registered players and continues to grow every year. For those interested in seeing the old teams the club now has numerous pictures of the teams from yesterday on its web site and Facebook sites, starting in 1960.

10 Development Team through to the Cambridgeshire County Plate Final Newmarket s Development team scored a convincing win over St Ives II to take its place in the final of the Cambridgeshire County Junior Plate on 16th April. Scoring eight tries Newmarket won 49 points to nil. Newmarket dominated the match right from the beginning and spent the majority of the game in its opponent s half. St Ives discipline was poor and the team gave away far too many penalties. Initially though Newmarket failed to take advantage, missing a couple of kicks before the team got into its stride. The first points came 15 minutes into game when Adam Smith and the pack heaved the ball over St Ives line. Callum Laing touched down the first of his hat trick of tries just six minutes later and Michael Palmer convert it. Palmer then slotted a penalty through the posts to end the first half 15-0 to Newmarket. As might be expected Newmarket started the second half full of confidence and within ten minutes Laing scored his second & third tries. The wind, which had helped Newmarket in the first half, now spoilt the kicking and neither try was converted. Newmarket now went into overdrive and Wayne Reader when on to score a hat trick of tries as well. In each case Newmarket s scrum half Anton Philips fed the ball out along the line out to winger Reader who despite crossing the line on the wing had time to touchdown underneath the posts for two of these tries. Michael Reeves, one of Newmarket more experienced players, converted both of these tries. Newmarket finished the match 49-0 ahead. To give credit to the St Ives side who, despite being on the wrong end of the scoreline, never let their heads go down. The Newmarket will be playing in the final of the Cambridgeshire County Plate on Saturday 16th April.
