3 From The President November 19, 2018 Dear Fellow Golf Professionals, 2018 was another great year for the Connecticut Section PGA. Our Member Tournament, PGA Junior League, and Professional Development programs all saw an increase in participation. I heard some great stories of our Members and Associates promoting the game and growing their business; something we asked everyone to do this year with #TakeOwnership. Team Connecticut and I recently attended the 102 nd PGA Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, California. We were on hand to witness history as Suzy Whaley became the first female member to be elected as the 41 st President of The PGA of America. I am very excited to watch her continued success over the next two years as she leads our great association. This year, the Board of Directors worked hard to move the needle of growing the game and serving our members. All of this wouldn t have been possible without the help of the entire board. Special thanks to outgoing Directors Ron Dellostritto and Bob Sparks, and this year s Vice-Presidents-at-Large Ron Beck, Kyle Hedstrom, and Ralph Salito. Your efforts and involvement in and out of the board room enabled us to make 2018 a successful year. I have truly enjoyed my time as your President. Working closely with the entire Board of Directors and our section staff has been a memorable experience which I will cherish forever. Special thanks to Sue Bell who has always been a major part of our operation. You will be missed. The personal relationships I have made, and will continue to foster, have enabled me to make a difference. I look forward to my continued involved in my role as Honorary President and my pursuit to be elected as District 1 Director. Thank you for all of your support and thank you for believing in me. Have a happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Sincerely, Ian A. Marshall, PGA President, Connecticut Section PGA

25 Membership Committee Howie Friday, Chairman MEMBERSHIP SERVICES & PROGRAMS 2018 The responsibility of the section and its Membership Committee is to ensure that PGA Professionals are properly classified and eligible for the PGA Classifications they seek. During the year, four section members completed the requirements and were elected to PGA Membership. Also this year, 6 professionals registered into the Professional Golf Management Program (PGM) and have begun their pursuit of PGA Membership (see list on page 25). Congratulations to all of them. The section is obligated to host and conduct a minimum of six Playing Ability Tests (P.A.T.s) for The PGA of America and to provide a certified P.A.T. Examiner for each event. In 2018, six PATs were scheduled and all six were completed. Dennis Dungee and Larry Thornhill shared the responsibility for onsite operation of the events. Again in 2018, section staff was responsible for scheduling the dates and sites, prepared the starting times, notified the participants, host professionals, and examiner, and posted the information on the section website. Some additional sites will be scheduled for next season. The Chairman was provided with a list of PAT participants who had made several unsuccessful attempts to pass. He contacted each and offered assistance. None of those contacted accepted the support. PGA Scholarship The PGA of America continues to award an annual scholarship to members' children. For 2018, there was one recipient in the college category, Sarah Swanson, daughter of Jeff Swanson, Cedar Knob Golf Course. Darcy Lucas continued to do a great job revising and updating the website and using social media outlets to disseminate important information and communicate with the membership. The weekly E-Update continues to be widely read and well received by members. ConnEction was delivered about every six weeks to the Section customer database; it is widely read and a useful communication tool to circulate information about the Section to the public. The Section contracted the publicist services of former Hartford Courant Sports Writer Bruce Berlet to cover and publicize Section events such as Annual Meetings, Award Ceremonies, Professional Tournaments, Junior Golf Tournaments, and Golf Foundation initiatives. He has done a good job in his second year of covering these assignments. 23

36 SUBSIDIARIES & AFFILIATES 2018 Assistants Association Jeff Mann, President We have completed another great season of golf, education, and business throughout the Connecticut Section. Our Association truly followed #takeownership and #playgolf! for the 2018 season, while bringing support to our fellow professionals. With the addition of our Associate Development Program for the winter season, both Associates and PGA Members can discuss how to improve their course work to becoming PGA Members. The board built a solid tournament schedule for the season, thanks to the accommodations of our section professionals. Our future plan is to encourage more participation in tournaments, educational programs, and seminars offered by the section. The Spring Meeting and Senior/Junior Blind Draw event was a success again this year. Our educational forum topic was The Financial Aspect of Golf. I would like to thank the panel of Chris Martinez, MW Financial; Michael Packard, PGA Employment Director; Josh Detmer, Go Golf Academy; Peter Seamen, Keney Park G.C.; Kyle Hedstrom, Stanley G.C., and Chris Bland, Ellington Ridge C.C., for their participation in this event. The success of our Assistants Match Play is growing and we hope to see an even more competitive atmosphere next year. Bulls Bridge G.C. was pleased to host the Final Four for our event. Rick Leal, Wyckoff C.C., captured the title this year. The board will be discussing a change to have matches based on geographic location followed by seeding of players. We feel this change will assist in completing matches in time for our finalist to make the assigned date for the Championship Match. The board would like to congratulate Michael Jezierski, Raceway G.C., for winning this year s National Car Rental Assistants Association Championship at Black Hall Club. He and Kyle Bilodeau, Tumble Brook C.C., qualified for the National Assistant PGA Professional Championship. At the Fall Meeting at Hartford Golf Club, elections were held for the Assistants Association Officers. Congratultions to Michael Johnson, Glastonbury Hills CC, the new Secretary. We are glad to announce Jason Loomis, Ridgewood CC as our new Marketing & Sponsors Director, and Kyle Bilodeau, Tumble Brook C.C. as one of our Vice Presidents at Large. Thank you to section Vice President John Steffen, Twin Hills C.C., for attending our meeting and for his insightful input. We could not have had such a great year without the work of the Assistants Association Board, and they should be recognized for their efforts: Evan Lambert, Secretary and acting Vice President; Nick Calabrese, Tournaments; Brian Phelps, Education; Michael Johnson, Marketing & Sponsors, and Ralph Salito, Vice President at Large. During the season, Bryan Mooney accepted the position as Head Golf Professional at Wyndham Golf Club and Aaron Chaffin began his Director of Golf and General Manager position at Southington Country Club. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye, but we are grateful for their years of service and wish them the best of luck in the future. Our Association has introduced a new educational program for all Associates who need assistance and guidance in completing their work experience portfolio for their PGM 2.0 curriculum. Currently, we have set four meetings at The First Tee of Connecticut in Cromwell, with Education Director Ron Beck, Fox Hopyard G.C., will counsel each attendee through their coursework. The Assistants Association Board will attend to be of support and receive the same attention as well. We hope this becomes a very successful addition to the Assistants Association Education Program. In addition to all Assistants, I would like to set a task for every Head Professional and Director of Golf in the section to encourage their assistant to get involved and participate in the offerings we have in store for We are the experts in the game and business of golf. Let s continue to show our customers and golf enthusiasts that we are what makes this game continue to grow. Every member of the Association should make a mindful effort to attend both the Spring & Fall Meeting, as well as one education meeting, and play in the 2019 National Car Rental Assistants Association Championship. This can only better your future to become a head professional and advance your career in the golf business. Remember our theme for the 2018 season, #takeownership and #playgolf! Hope to see you all at the Spring Meeting and Senior/Junior Blind Draw in
