We had a guest speaker Kelly Fegley- golf pro at Golf Galaxy. Tips from Kelly: If you don t have a pre-shot routine, you should get one! The pre-shot routine is key to regaining your equilibrium and tempo when things start to go south during a round. Always pick an intermediate target to help improve your accuracy. Many times we think we re swinging to the target but we re not. He also recommended a number of training aids, such as the Matzie Swing Trainer ($85.00), the impact bag and a weighted training club which also features a molded grip to teach correct hand position Seymour Indiana weekend Outing Friday winners at Shadow Wood Game was 2 person team score with handicap (front, back and total): Front Tie between Tim Maybury/ Andy Mason and Larry Deschler/Ann Wassmann Back - Tim Maybury/Andy Mason Total - Tim Maybury/Andy Mason Longest Putt Larry Deschler and Andy Mason Looks like Andy won enough to pay for the trip Saturday winners At Otter Creek: Low Score Women - Marsha Barnholtz, Trish Rose and Andy Mason/Sue Stewart Low Score Men Ken Wiley, Larry Deschler, Ken Ferguson/Tom Haley Longest Putt Trish Rose Sunday winners at Shadow Wood Team Lowest Net Score Ed/Ken Ferguson/Marsha Barnholtz/Tom Haley- Pat Dixon/Ken Wiley/Jane Olson/Kent Gearhardt Ann Wassmann/Ron Green/Jerry Beck/Linda Simpkins Closest to the Pin Marsha Barnholtz The Mill Course We played a team shamble. 3 Golf Thoughts Some of the better-known professional odd shots include: Sam Snead s ball landing in the men s bathroom at the Cleveland Open. In 1983, the average ball had 330 dimples. By 2001, the average ball had 415, with the range between 360 and 523 as the most popular. The shorter the shot, the more deliberate and carefully thought out your efforts must be. Henry Longhurst Comparatively few golfers ever show that they are aware that the golf architect tries to design a course that rewards an intelligent golfer and penalizes a stupid one. Tommy Armour Bobby Jones never won a dime. He was an amateur for his entire professional career. However, he was given a gun for winning his division in the 1933 Savannah Open. Golf is a game kings and presidents play when they get tired of running countries. Charles Price Golf is not a fair game, so why build a course fair? Pete Dye About Our Members Happy Birthday to these members: Connie Koppenhafer - 06/12 Jane Olson - 06/08 Ann Wassmann - 05/30 Rules and More Rules When is a free drop allowed? Sometimes a free drop is allowed, sometimes not. When allowed, the drop must be within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. In which of these situations (if any) is a free drop allowed? A. Your ball is located in an area of "abnormal ground conditions", such as casual water or ground under repair. Free drop, Yes or No? B. Your stance has interference from "abnormal ground conditions", such as casual water or ground under repair. Free drop, Yes or No? C. Your ball is located in a water hazard. Free drop, Yes or No? D. Your stance has interference from a water hazard. Free drop, Yes or No? E. Your ball lies on a paved cart path. Free drop, Yes or No? F. Your stance has interference from a paved cart path. Free drop, Yes or No? And the answers are: A. Your ball is located in an area of "abnormal ground conditions", such as casual water or ground under repair. Free drop, Yes. 4 CELEBRATING 19 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNE, 2012 June 20 Deadline to Sign-Up Sixty (60) members have signed-up for the Ireland trip, July We will spend three days in Dublin, three in Killarney and three in Limerick. You d fly into Dublin but return home from Shannon Airport near Limerick. When online registration is available, please have your roommate sign-up the same time you do. Details and itinerary at Killarney Golf & Fish Club, Site of 2011 Irish Open and one of the courses we ll play in July. Get High On Golf this August If you re a down-home country boy like me, you don t get out much. Yes, I ve traveled the world but places in my own back yard have never been pleasured by my presence. Living in North Carolina, we sometimes think anything west of the Mississippi is another country. The landscape changes. Roads are straight and you can see places you don t want to see for miles. But as you head west, I mean really, really west, you bump into a rock. Locals call it the Rockies. And within those Rockies is one of our newest chapters, the ever-so-young Denver group. Several months ago, Denver contacted the national office with a desire to blow-away the membership. They wanted to host a multi-chapter golf weekend, where else, but in the Rocky Mountains. That place way up in the sky. But you re such a young chapter, are you sure you want to do this? I asked. Absolutely! they replied. We are energetic and we know we can offer the members from all over the country an experience like no other. So game on. Denver s Colorado Rocky Mountain Golf Adventure is now official. It s golf with an attitude. Or, was that altitude? At 9,000 feet elevation, this will be an adventure. The reason most Denver chapter members have single digit handicaps is because balls travel 400 yards out there. (Ball retrievers are four times longer as well.) Winter Park, Colorado will be the venue and the dates are set for August So the only question remains: will you engage yourself in this kind of experience? Will you get high with your fellow chapter members? Will you meet friends you never thought you had? So enough questions. Go to the website and register. Do it now. This and other events are at Update Your Info on Your Chapter s Roster People still call us wanting us to change the phone number, or handicap or address in the database (roster). For a couple of years now, you ve had the ability to update your information on the roster yourself. This updates the national database. Got an address or phone change? Want to add your cell number, change your handicap? Go to the MY ACCOUNT button at our website, SinglesGolf.com and log-in. Forgot your log-in? It s real easy; just follow the simple instructions and your log-in information comes to you right away. The National Website: Where Can We Improve? Ever been to SinglesGolf.com? The national site receives some 30,000 visitors per month, some for the first time, and others are returning members. The site is, to a certain extent, an electronic brochure about our organization but it s also a place members go to find out what s going on next. Most chapters who use our software access their local website by entering their chapter name, followed by the national site, e.g. Local sites are free to chapters but other chapters host their own sites entirely independent of the national site. We also want to make sure the national site is satisfying your needs. If there s something you d like to see that s not there, let us know. And if you d like to submit a photo for our moving photos section, send it to GolfASGA@aol.com Hawaii 2013: Time to Return Yes, time to return for a low score and aloha! Everyone knows that your golf score in Hawaii doesn t really mean anything. Hit a bad shot, it doesn t matter, just look beyond the beautiful hill of flowers and see whales frolicking off the coast. Hit a good shot, well, it s just another day at the office. Yes, again, we re looking at a return visit to Hawaii. We seem to show-up there about every other year. No details yet, but as usual, before we can discuss things with hotels, we need to know if you re interested. Will we have 28 or 82 attend? We never know until we start seeing some action on your part. So if you d like to go to Hawaii at some time between the last week in January through mid-march, go to our Hawaii website and just put your name on the list. There s no financial or other obligation at this point, just a show of hands. The site s at An announcement should be made by the end of this month or mid-july at the latest. Mahalo! - Tom Alsop, President / Founder American Singles Golf Association - GolfASGA@aol.com
