Box South Dennis, MA NEXT MEETING March 8, 2018 Meetings are the second Thursday of each month (except December, July & August) at the Dennis Senior Center, 1045 Rt. 134, E. Dennis at 1:30 PM. President s Message March 2018 Many thanks to Charlie Jones for running the last meeting for me while I m working on my golf game in Florida. By all I accounts, he did a great job and Jack Hudson s jokes were even enjoyed by our speaker from the Y who I understand gave an informative talk. On February 21 st, we had a busload of hopeful adventurers embark to Mohegan Sun. From what I m told, there were quite a few winners and everyone enjoyed the trip. Many thanks to Gary Merton for putting this together. Gary felt that there was something missing in March since we have not had a St. Patrick s Day get together for some time so he is putting together an evening celebrating the Irish at the Loft Restaurant & Bar at the Cove Resort on Wednesday, March 14, Gary guarantees good food and a great evening. I hope that you will consider this opportunity to visit a local establishment that the Retired Men s club has not used in the past and give it a try.

2 Jack Hudson is now beginning his third year as our Treasurer and he has done a wonderful job. Jack is expeditious at keeping the books up to par and has enhanced our reporting and systems along the way. In addition he files our annual Form 990 with the IRS allowing us to maintain our non-profit status. Jack s job is one of those that operates behind the scenes but is so important to our club. In addition Jack has centralized all of the monies coming into the club into our PO Box (we also have a new PO Box for golf) to better streamline the record keeping. Jack is also responsible for our website and for coordinating the production of the annual membership booklet. Most of you know Jack as the one who tells the corny jokes every time he gets an opportunity but he certainly does a lot more than that and for that we are very grateful. Last month in the newsletter, I indicated to you that Uke Piedra was stepping down as Chairman and the only member of our Sunshine Committee and we were in need of a replacement. Uke has done a great job of writing get well and condolence notes on behalf of everyone in our club for the last six years. Unfortunately no one has stepped forward and it appears that this position and the wonderful service it performs may go by the wayside unless someone or a group of individuals is willing to step up and take over these responsibilities. I m still hoping that we might find someone to fill Uke s shoes. Please consider helping the club out on this one. Thanks. Each President has their own trademark as part of our monthly newsletter. Some of our past president s have been history enthusiasts or ardent antique automobile followers. I don t have a particular endeavor such as this so I thought it might be appropriate to end my monthly message with a meaningful thought (non-political and non-controversial) and hopefully leave you with something to think about for the next month. Not necessarily humorous and not too simple like Yogi Berra s famous quote It s not over until it s over. There is no time limit to wise utterances that are reassuring during these troubled times. The following is the inscription on John Wayne s Headstone: Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. 4 Retired Men s Club General Membership Meeting February 8, 2018 Meeting called to order at 1:35 p.m. by Vice-president Charlie Jones Pledge to the flag recited; God Bless America sung. Moment of silence for the passing of Ed Eckland, past president and 23 year member. Motion to waive the reading of January minutes approved. Request made for a member to serve as chair of the Sunshine Committee. Treasurer s report from Jack Hudson. Current balance: $ Events Chair, Gary Merton reported on upcoming events. February 21 st Mohegan Sun trip; March 14 th - St. Patrick s dinner at The Loft. Charlie Jones, Golf Committee Chair, reported on the golf outings scheduled for the Spring & Fall. Courses include: Spring Brookside, Ocean Edge, Blue Rock New Seabury, The Captains; Fall Paul Harney, Cranberry Valley, Old Barnstable, The Cape Club and Pocasset. A revised list of active golfers is being created. The RMC bowling league has added a few new members. Substitutes welcome. Membership Chair, Ken Lyman announced that with six new members we now have 340 in the club. A new 2018 roster book will soon be printed so notify him of any contact information updates. Brian O Toole introduced guest speaker, Stacie Peugh. She is the President and CEO of the Cape Cod YMCA. She shared the history, mission and programs of the nation s largest non-profit charitable organization. Ed was 89 and had been a member since Doug Ide passed away on February 11. He was 87 and had been a member since Ed Guiliani passed away on February 15. Ed was 93 and had been a member since We will miss all of these fine men! 6 RMC Special Events for 2018 March Newsletter Hi fellow members!!!! The February 21 st Mohegan Sun Bus Trip was a great success. Thanks for all of you who attended. Win, Loose or Draw we had a great time. Next event.. March 14, 2018 Dinner Social at the Loft Restaurant. A second flyer went out 2/26 as some of you indicated that they may have deleted the previous one. The deadline for receiving your check is March 1st. Hope you can make it. The owners are excited and are ready to give you a enjoyable evening. I will have extra forms at the meeting just in case you would like to join us. I will see you there. 7 March Golf News Here s the latest news about Retired Men s Club Golf. Our five event Spring schedule begins in April at two of the best courses on Cape Cod. The first, at The Brookside Club, just off Route 28 in Bourne, is on Monday, April 23 th. Our second event, at The Ocean Edge Golf Club in Brewster is on Monday, April 30 th. Both tournaments will have full-handicap team competitions as well as prizes for the best individual Net and Gross scores. For members new to these courses, you are in for a treat. The Brookside Club features incredible views across Buzzards Bay and first-class playing conditions. The Ocean Edge course was recently redesigned and upgraded by the Nicklaus Group. Its18 holes challenge players with tree-lined fairways, rolling hills and dramatic elevation changes. Access to their great clubhouses is included. Watch your towards the end of March for a separate mailing about golf. Signup sheets, directions to the courses, start times and other important details will be provided. There is no increase in cost over the 2017 Fall Season fee. The fee for all five 2018 Spring Season events will be $55, including carts. Entry fees for members of the course being played will be adjusted. Carts only, no walking. All players will be required to ride. Sorry, no guests allowed.

8 At the Club s January and February meetings, the issue of old golf prizes not being picked up was addressed. We ve made substantial progress since then and have narrowed the list to just a half-dozen members who have money waiting and have not made arrangement to have it picked up. They have all been contacted by . If you were one of those contacted, the March Meeting will be your last chance to pick up your fortune. Awards not picked up by the conclusion of the March meeting will be forfeited and returned to the RMC Golf treasury. March Golf Tip Are you hitting the right ball for your game? Probably not.
