1 NEWSLETTER JUNE Edition P.O. Box South Dennis, MA NEXT MEETING June 9, 2016 Meetings are the second Thursday of each month (except during December, July & August) at the Dennis Senior Center, 1045 Rt. 134, East Dennis at 1:30 PM. (The Executive Committee meets at 12:15.) President s Message June 2016 Well I think Spring is finally here. We met a long-time Cape resident the other day and said, "you do know what "Winter/ Spring is on Cape Cod don t you?" I said, " I guess", in which she said January, February, March, March, March, June. Go figure. We now look forward to the flower beds all planted and vegetable s starting to pop up and the yard all pruned and mulched. Soon the bridges will slowly back up and as we all know our quiet serenity will slowly pass to a more hectic Summer mode. That s not a bad thing as guests come, grandchildren look forward to visiting the beach and the Cape Cod Baseball starts a tradition that takes us back to a more peaceful time. A few members asked me if I was going to test them again next month. I said was it a bad thing and he said no I just want to be ready just in case. So not to disappoint you amateur historians out there I could have a few more up my sleeve. Our first Summer event is coming. Look for the flyer as we start to move our events to the next level. 103 rd Cape Cod Canal Tour with lunch and glass museum tour. A good way to entertain some guests on July 28 th (continued on page 2)
2 (President s message continued) As I was watching my granddaughter receive her degree from Bridgewater University this month I started reflecting on how strong willed our young people are and their goals and future. So not to disappoint you history nuts taken from The Mayflower Quarterly Sept The fact that there were girls on the Mayflower was remarkable given the views of the time. Most of the Pilgrims felt that the bodies of girls were too weak to make the voyage on the Mayflower, and felt that girls were not strong enough to survive the hardships of building a colony. Because of this, most parents decided to leave the girls behind in England or Holland, and would send for them later once everything was built and more comfortable. Despite the general belief that girls were weaker, 11 girls, ranging in ages from 1-17, did make the voyage on the Mayflower with their families. And perhaps more surprisingly, young girls proved to have the strongest bodies of all: the first winter, 75% of the adult women died,50% of the men died, 36% of the boys died, but only two girls (18%) died. With that I leave you, and will see you at the June meeting. I wish you all and your families a wonderful Summer season. George Cappola June Meeting - Guest Speaker We are delighted to have Patrice Carroll LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) speaking to us this month. Patrice is the manager of Praeder-Willi Syndrome (PWS) services for both children and adults at Latham Centers in Brewster, MA. PWS is a rare genetic disorder dealing with chromosome 15. Patrice received her Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Simmons College and is deeply involved in both national and international organizations that work with children and adults diagnosed with PWS. Latham Centers is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1970 to provide residential care, education, and treatment for children ages 8-22 and is located in Brewster, MA. They serve intellectually disabled girls and boys with special needs as well as children and adults with Praeder-Willi Syndrome whether you live nearby in Massachusetts, in New York, or elsewhere. Latham Centers have developed a range of lifestyle options where students study and live at residences at their school in Brewster, MA and have now also established supporting nearby off-cape residences.
