S. Watkins (Furyk) L. Muszynski (Furyk) G. Williams (Dufner) J. VanSickle (McDowell) R. Cipullo (McDowell) So far so good! It's been about three weeks since my arrival and I feel like we are making strides. My number one goal is to create opportunities for all of our members to play as much tennis as they want and maybe more. So far the participation has been good but I want it to be great, even during the summer. Look for more opportunities to get out and play and compete. Friday evening doubles is going well, so bring your significant other or a guest and come out and play. If you re solo, that s not a problem either, there is always someone looking to play. After the tennis, everyone goes up to the pool and eats and drinks and enjoys the evening while the kids are at Kids Night out. If you have any questions please give me a call. My tennis thought of the month is an easy one, sit on your couch and watch tennis! As I am writing this, Wimbledon is on the TV and Roger Federer is playing and winning. When I m watching a tennis match, especially Roger, I try to identify strengths and patterns in their game. With most, I look for weakness also, but with Roger that is hard to do! I personally like to watch the technique and stay current on the modern game of tennis. I want my students to have every advantage they can have. So during these great tournaments, enjoy the tennis, but also use it as a learning opportunity and let me know if you have any questions. I probably cant teach you Roger s forehand, but I can make your forehand as good as it can be! It has been a great couple of weeks and I want to thank the members and the staff for welcoming my family and myself to the Club. Hopefully I will know everyone s name in the next couple of months, but please introduce yourself if you see me. Patrick Jenkins Head Tennis Professional Cindy Flowers, GWGA 18-hole Champion
8 Golf Rules By Dyke Farrow You may recall that the club hosted a qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur in June. During the tournament, I received a call to go to the seventh green for assistance with the rules. A player reported that he had marked his ball and lifted it. However, when he attempted to replace the ball in front of the ball marker, it would not sit in its previous spot. It kept rolling an inch or so away. He was not sure what he was required to do in this circumstance. Do you Know? Rule 20 in the rule book covers lifting, dropping and placing. Section 20-3d covers this specific situation. It states:...except in hazard, it (the ball) must be placed at the nearest spot where it can be placed at rest that is nearer the hole and not the hazard. In this case, the player was able to place the ball within half an inch of its previous location without it rolling. That became its correct position and there was no penalty. After many months without rain, we finally started to get some showers and a couple of storms that produced large amounts of water. The bunkers have been extremely washed out during some of the storms. This creates a maintenance challenge for us when putting them back together in a few hours before play starts. We will be adding some additional sand to many of the bunkers that need it during this month. Our greens have been slow to recover from the last aerification. We are utilizing our walk mowers and handtreating all areas of the greens that are thin and not uniform in coverage. These areas will be continually worked and lightly irrigated. We are scheduled for our next aerification on July 9th. This one will be more aggressive than the last, however, I feel satisfied that the greens will have a better recovery. We are working on some course-wide post-emergent weed control applications. Growth regulator applications on the fairways are helping keep the clipping yield to an acceptable level and tightening up the turf grass. As you may have noticed, we have some drains on several holes that are plugged or broken. We will be performing some work to get them back in line. We have lots of work to do on the course, at the clubhouse and around our tennis facility over the upcoming month. We look forward to seeing you out on the course and as always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, stop me on the course or me at mrowe@gainesvillegolf.cc.
