6 The Outlook for 2017 for the Idaho Golf Association GENGER A. FAHLESON, PH.D. IGA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Southern Idaho has suffered one of the most severe winters on record. Snow and sub-freezing temperatures required folks to shovel snow rather than even thinking about playing a few holes of golf or hitting balls on the driving range. Even though we ve had a tough start to the year, the IGA s outlook for 2017 is bright. The 2017 IGA Championship schedule is set with terrific venues and can be viewed in this publication (or on our website at theiga.org). The IGA s Board of Directors is going through a transition in an effort to strengthen the Association. Throughout the history of the Association, its leadership body consisted of nine members, and three Directors from each of the three Districts. In 2016 the Board voted to expand, adding three At Large members. All Board members will serve three-year terms, whether they are a District Director or an At Large Director. The IGA Staff has also gone through a bit of a change. The IGA is a small Association and has just four full-time staff members. There is an addition of two USGA P.J. Boatwright Jr. Interns through the summer months. The four full-time positions are: Myself as Executive Director; Director of Member Services and Championship Administration, Vanessa Sinclair; Manager of Junior Golf, Ken Spraker; and, Caleb Cox recently joined the staff to oversee the Handicapping and Course Rating program. (See the Q&A with Caleb in another section of this publication.) The Board approved the 2017 goals for the Association in their December meeting, and the goals are the following: Establish a uniform and statewide handicap and course rating program in line with the USGA recommended procedures. To achieve this goal we will work to ensure member clubs have a representative complete the USGA s Handicap Education Assessment. There are 10 courses slated to be re-rated in Build relationships with key stakeholders, including club association leaders, PGA professionals and superintendents. Energy will be spent to update and maintain records of the leadership (officers) of men s and women s golf associations at each member club. The IGA has a strong relationship with the Rocky Mountain PGA Section staff and members, as well as the Idaho GCSA (superintendents), and that will continue Conduct quality state championships. The IGA championships will continue to offer quality competitions that identify the best golfers in the state. We continue to look for ways to improve the championship experience for contestants. In 2017 a major overhaul to the Match Play Championship will be a part of such attempts. Assist individual member clubs in the operation of their activities. Through its relationship with the IGA PROVIDES FREE GHIN MOBILE APP You can download a free GHIN Mobile app on your smartphone. This is the official app of the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN), a service of the United States Golf Association. This personalized app allows you to post your scores, view your most recent scores, view your current Handicap Index, instantly calculate your Index on any given tee markers on any given course, enter championships and view social media posts. All in the palm of your hand. Again, this is a free app just search GHIN in the app store on your smartphone or tablet. USGA, the IGA provides tournament software to its member clubs. In 2017 there will be a transition from the USGA s Tournament Pairings Program to USGA Tournament Management powered by Golf Genius. This will be a significant change and over time provide a needed improvement in tournament software. Invest in the future of the game. The IGA continues to support junior golf through the Idaho Junior Tour. In addition, the Idaho Junior Golf Foundation provides significant support to junior golfers in the state. Educate members on aspects of the game, including the USGA Rules of Golf, USGA Handicap System, Course Rating, the conduct of competitions and the proper marking of golf courses. The IGA will continue to offer seminars on Rules, Handicapping and Course Rating. Communicate with members on a variety of platforms. The key to effective communication is through various digital platforms including , i-links e-revision newsletter, social media and the IGA web site, theiga.org. Maintain a balanced and transparent budget with stable funding sources. Major sources of income for the IGA are from individual member dues and from tournament entry fees. The IGA budget is distributed at each of the Annual District Meetings, or available to members on request. And lastly, and most importantly, advocate for the best interest of the game, golf facilities and golfers in Idaho. Looking forward to a great 2017 season. HAVE QUESTIONS? CONTACT US! 9 A Game for Life At the University of Idaho s PGA Golf Management Program, students find a gateway to a fulfilling career FOR SOME, FINDING A WAY TO A REWARDING CAREER IN A FIELD THEY LOVE is not an easy thing. But for those who love the game of golf and want to make it their life, the University of Idaho offers a direct pipeline into the industry with its PGA Golf Management Program. Ask Cole Mize. My dad played golf, and that s how I got into the game, Mize says. Cole played on the golf team at Priest River (Idaho) High School, and practiced at nearby StoneRidge Golf Club. And it was at StoneRidge that Mize first met Dawes Marlatt. Marlatt graduated from the University of Idaho, earning a master s degree in sports recreation and management. He then built the university s PGA Golf Management Program from the ground up, and it became accredited in He is now the senior director of education for the PGA of America, based in Florida, and is a PGA Master Professional. Dawes encouraged me to enroll in the PGA program he was creating at U of I, Mize recalls, which he did in 2001 and was in the program s first graduating class. There were three of us who graduated in that first class. Mize then started working as a PGA professional, but returned to the U of I in 2006 to become the program s internship coordinator. He then became director in 2009 after Marlatt left for Florida. There are now 60 students enrolled in the program, with the majority coming from the Northwest, although some are from other parts of the country, and some internationally. We get students from all stages of life, Mize says. Fresh out of high school, community college transfers, people changing careers in their 30s and 40s, everyone. Students must complete the requirements of the program, which consists of course studies on campus and internships in the field, all over a span of a little less than five years. The program offers great internship opportunities, Mize says. We offer valuable work experience in the real world, encouraging students to create their own network, which makes it easy to get a job right after graduation. The program places students in internships all over the world in China, Norway, Scotland, Ireland, as well as at prominent golf resorts in the U.S. such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst. Along with the internships, the program also provides an opportunity for the students to attend the annual PGA Show, held each January in Orlando, Fla. Conducted by the PGA of America, the show is the largest gathering of the year of golf retailers, manufacturers and PGA professionals. Students in the program have the chance to meet with mentors and attend PGA educational seminars. Graduates of the University of Idaho program have a 100 percent career placement record. We take a lot of pride in helping our students reach their career goals, Mize said. With the internships we provide, the university curriculum, the many networking opportunities, having earned PGA membership upon graduation, and with our entire program being coordinated with the PGA of America main office, our students are fully prepared to contribute to the golf industry. Advantages of the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Idaho Students earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business The program is accredited by the PGA of America The U of I has the only PGAaccredited golf management program in the Northwest, and is one of just 18 in the U.S. Graduates have a 100 percent career placement rate within the golf industry Graduates become PGA Members University of Idaho PGA Golf Management Program Cole Mize, PGA Director, PGA Golf Management colem@uidaho.edu uidaho.edu/pga Financial Aid & Scholarships finaid@uidaho.edu University of Idaho Moscow, Idaho uidaho.edu FEBRUARY 2017 GOLF IDAHO 9

10 Meet Caleb Cox the newest IGA staff member As the new IGA Administrator of Handicapping and Course Rating, Caleb Cox is looking forward to the 2017 season How were you introduced to the game of golf? My grandpa Curt took me out to hit golf balls for the first time when I was about nine years old. I can still remember that experience to this day. I was instantly hooked and couldn t get enough. I was constantly nagging my dad to go with him when he would go play. When did you become interested in golf administration? I became interested in golf as a profession in high school, but didn t actually take my first job as an assistant in a golf shop until about five years ago. You ve worked at a few different clubs. Where were they located? I held a summer job in course maintenance at Maxwell Golf Course in Abilene, Tex. My first assistant position was at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla. My most recent position was at Hillcrest Country Club here in Boise. What s your most memorable moment working at the club level? I had the opportunity to work as a Hole Captain at the 2014 U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla. To be part of such a large team of people and performing a small role in such a monumental event was truly one of the greatest experiences of my golf career. If you had to name one thing the game of golf has taught you, what would that be? Success is more often achieved with patience and planning, rather than hasty decisions and taking unnecessary chances. What s your favorite thing about Idaho? How is it different from the other states you have lived in? My family and I absolutely love the climate of Idaho, and the chances to participate in a wide variety of seasonal outdoor activities. Idaho is a true hidden gem in those ways. Being able to live in a place that actually has four seasons and no tornados is truly a great way to live! What excites you most about being on staff at the Idaho Golf Association? I am excited most to travel around the state and see the great beauty and playing challenges that Idaho golf courses have to offer. Vanessa Sinclair 10 FEBRUARY 2017 GOLF IDAHO

IGA: Who introduced you to the game? MERT: My late husband Daryl, he was a caddie in high school. IGA: The IGA s motto is Game of a Lifetime. What are your thoughts? MERT: I totally agree with that. I have been living it. IGA: What has the game of golf taught you over the years? MERT: Patience, exercise, friendships, enjoying the outdoors, and learning new things. Not a bad way to go. IGA: If you could tell a beginning golfer one thing about this game, what would it be? MERT: Make new friends while you are having fun. IGA: Have you had any holes-in-one? If so, how many? MERT: I ve had three holes-in-one. The first was at a 9-hole golf course, hole No. 6, at the old Lloyds GC (now the Lloyd Center) in Portland, Ore. in The second one was at Gresham (Ore.) MERT: I had a pacemaker and heart valve surgery done in I only managed to golf a few rounds at the end of I was determined to get back to the game and not hold anyone up. I was welcomed back with open arms by my golfing friends. My goal for 2017 is to get my handicap to where I am shooting 100 for 18 holes. Seems like I do well during a round, but then lose it on three or four holes. That s golf. 14 PET PEEVES? Oh yes, we ve got a few by Rob Lundgren Have you ever been concentrating on that winning putt when your playing partner s cell phone goes off? Or how about those kids using the bunker as a sandbox just as your ball lands next to them? Or what about that flock of geese flying dangerously just over your head? Yes, I m talking about pet peeves. We all have them, especially golfers. Most aren t that serious or earth-shattering, but I think many of you would agree our pet peeves can take away from the enjoyment of the game we love to play. Since I decided I wasn t the only golfer bugged by these occurrences I asked some of the guys that play the course I usually do, Lakeview Golf Club in Meridian a pretty typical public course not real fancy, but comfortable. Here are some of their pet peeves. Golfers not playing ready golf, said my neighbor, Steve Jessup. I mean when three guys in a foursome have already hit and they re having to wait while the fourth is looking for balls (not any of them his) in a nearby hazard. Bill Precht, my regular golf partner, claimed not to have any pet peeves before admitting, I guess it would be rude players, players who hit into you. Like the guy last year who bounced his ball off the roof of my cart with me sitting in it! Assistant PGA pro Ryan Roberts has plenty of peeves thanks to his years of experience watching golfers say and do the darndest things. Sometimes someone will call in and ask for the earliest tee time available and I tell them eight o clock, then they say That s way too early. One of Roberts biggest complaints occurs when a twosome hesitates or even refuses to form a foursome to speed up play on busy days. And even when they go out as a foursome they often split up anyway after the first hole (out of sight of the clubhouse). Then they call and complain about the slow play, he said. It s funny how people complain, Roberts continued. After all, you re out there to enjoy the day. Mary Claire Norman, the marketing and event director at Lakeview has seen and heard it all. Like during a frost delay we had about 20 golfers milling around and they kept asking me when the delay would be over. Finally I had enough and just looked up at the sky and said: You might as well ask God I don t like it when people spend so much time on the green, sizing up and measuring their putts, said Mary Ollie. I mean it s not neurosurgery for heaven s sake. about that. It didn t seem to help. Norman also shared a few actual scenarios where people called in demonstrating how very human (or dumb?) they could be. Such as, My kids just came home with their pockets full of range balls and said they stole them from your driving range. Would you like to buy them back? Or how about this: I d like to get a tee time for tomorrow, said one caller. When informed there were 16 times open in the morning and 20 in the afternoon, the caller quickly replied, No, I don t think any of those times will work for me. The most common complaint from my unscientific survey involved golfers When snow is on the ground, kids turn the eighth green at Lakeview GC into a sledding hill. Photo by Mary Ollie who did not repair their ball marks on the green. Roberts, who also heads a golf development program at Lakeview says, I teach the kids to fix your divot and ball mark and then two others. Another common peeve was slow play, especially when on the green. I don t like it when people spend so much time on the green, sizing up and measuring their putts, said Mary Ollie. I mean it s not neurosurgery for heaven s sake. Norm Seymour, who has played the game for close to half a century, was quick with his peeve. I ll tell you right now, it s the flippin radios blasting from the guys carts with some talk-show hosts blabbing away, he said. Speaking of golf carts, I don t like to see them on or even near the green. And I must admit I don t like kites, model airplanes, or drones (yes, drones) flying overhead when I m trying to swing. Meanwhile Roberts urges patience and even cooperation. If you re worried about slow play, offer to play together, suggests Roberts. Maybe the other person can learn something from you. Remember, golf is a social sport. Maybe he s right about patience, but those kids sliding down the eighth green on their sleds and saucers after a recent mini-snowstorm sure tried mine. Rob Lundgren is a freelance golf writer who lives in Meridian. Don t get him started on what bugs him. 14 FEBRUARY 2017 GOLF IDAHO

16 Corporal Clutch is back home in Idaho by Rob Lundgren Chad Pfeifer, known affectionately as Corporal Clutch after his thrilling come-from-behind victories during Golf Channel s Big Break The Palm Beaches Florida last year, is back home in the Nampa-Caldwell area with his wife Summer and two sons Grady and Lucien. The Pfeifers are also expecting a third son, due in February We felt it was best to move back home and be around family, Chad explained, noting that both he and Summer were classmates at Caldwell s Vallivue High School and have always considered the area as their home. And he immediately began immersing himself in the local community. Last fall Chad was the headliner for the Pfeifer Shootout at TimberStone Golf Course in Caldwell. The event raised some $15,000, and David Feherty s Troops First Foundation along with several local charities were the beneficiaries. I was happy to step up and make this event happen, said Amanda McGee, the event s coordinator (and Chad s sister). I love my brother. He has a big heart and his desire to help other people with disabilities, especially veterans, using golf as a platform, is so rewarding to see. And we make a great team! After losing his left leg above the knee due to a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq, Chad began playing golf as part of his physical therapy and fell in love with the game. A gifted high school and college athlete, Chad Pfeifer hit a few balls on the range prior to last fall s shootout. Photo by Shelbi Clemens Chad played well from the start, and has set his sights on becoming the first amputee on the PGA Tour. I like to think I m an inspiration to many wounded vets, he said. They thank me for getting out there. Chad got involved with the Troops First Foundation after meeting David Feherty. They invited me to a few of their events and I wanted to help them out when and where I could, Chad said. I have become very close with Troops First and I know the money they raise always goes to help those in need. After becoming something of a celebrity on Big Break in 2015, Chad was invited to play in the Albertsons Boise Open last year, becoming the first amputee to compete on the Web.com Tour. This year has been a bit tougher, though, career-wise, says Chad. I played in a few Adams Tour events in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, but did not play very well, he said. With the planned move back to Idaho, Chad also decided not to compete in this year s PGA Tour Qualifying School, but he played a few tournaments on the Gateway Tour in Arizona this winter. Probably one of neatest competitions for Chad was his participation in this year s Simpson Cup held in Rochester, N.Y. It s a Ryder Cup-style format between wounded U.S. soldiers and wounded United Kingdom soldiers. It s a fantastic format with great competition and even greater camaraderie, Chad said. He helped the U.S. win the Cup back from the Brits and is already looking forward to next year when the Simpson Cup will be held at Royal Birkdale in England. In the meantime Chad has been getting re-acquainted with his hometown and pursuing his goal of reaching the PGA Tour. I still want to pursue my goal of reaching the PGA Tour, he says. Meanwhile, sister Amanda is already looking forward to 2017 and another shootout. It ll be held at TimberStone again on August 11 and I m already making plans for it, she said. 16 FEBRUARY 2017 GOLF IDAHO
