By Golf Co-Chairperson Jerry Dutka On behalf of the AOC Windy City Chapter, President Joe Duthie and the Windy City Chapter Board of Directors wish to thank the golfers for joining us at the 19th Annual Bob Kranz Memorial Classic held on June 10, This year s event started out as a golfers nightmare with rain all through the night before and throughout the morning hours. Finally at 10:30 AM, the rain stopped and the first foursome teed off. The course was totally wet and the rule of golf carts only allowed on the cart paths was in force. The day continued to improve with periods of sunshine, but the temperature remained cool and the wind was constantly giving the golfer a challenge. Play was not delayed as it was last year and every team finished before the 6:30 dinner call. We had a great group of 82 golfers who totally enjoyed the day of golf at the Crystal Woods Golf Club, Routes 47 and 176, Woodstock. Eighty-two hungry golfers and guests enjoyed the Excellent buffet dinner of chef sliced roast beef and pork roast, roasted chicken, mostaccioli, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, a great salad and chocolate and strawberry sundaes. This was one of the best dinners the group has had in the 19 years of the Kranz outing. Continued on Page 2. WINDJAMMER 1
Message From The Windy City President. Recent Changes at AOC National. Many of you may have been following the changes that have recently taken place at AOC National with regard to the President and Vice President resigning. It is very unfortunate that organizational leadership often comes down to such negative actions that impact the good work that is being done by the organization as a whole. In the case of the AOC National leadership, there were conflicts between two of the executive managers and the Board of Directors (BoD) that resulted in both the President (Ken Krech) and Vice-President (Vern Luke) resigning simultaneously. This left AOC National with a void for a short period of time until Walter Wolf and Christopher Glaze stepped-up to finish the president s and vice-president s terms, respectively. Both gentlemen are to be commended for their support to the AOC. I am not here to discuss the rights and wrongs in this matter, but simply to let the Windy City Chapter membership know that there were disagreements at the highest levels of management in the organization that resulted in an unfortunate set of actions. Many organizations experience such internal disagreements that sometime come down to public outbursts of criticism or even resignations. Just as the AOC has shown that it can continue to adapt to a changing military environment in its almost 50 year history, it has picked up the pieces from this incident and continues business as usual. The dedicated staff and BoD volunteers at AOC National reacted quickly to resolve this matter and to keep the AOC on course. Many of you have also probably received the first two issues (July & August 2006) of the new Journal of Electronic Defense (JED) that was not published by Horizon House. The AOC has decided to end its 30 year association with Horizon House and to take a more active role in the generation of the JED. To that end, John Knowles was hired as the Editor-in-chief and he is working with Naylor Publications to continue to bring the organization the most up-to-date information on the ins-andouts of the EW/IO industry. If these issues are any indication of what we can expect from future issues of the JED, then we can all rest assured that the decision to go the JED magazine internally was sound and well planned. In life, change is inevitable and the strong will figure out how best to adapt to changes that are out of their control and to even work these changes in their favor. The AOC has seen many highs and lows in its long history and there will be others as the organization continues to re-invent itself to best serve its members and the EW/IO community. Have You Had a Change of Address Lately? Have you moved lately and realize that you are no longer receiving AOC information (e.g., JED magazine) / announcement in the mail from either the Windy City Chapter or AOC National? If so, please make an effort to send Jerry Rice (Room x 5224), Windy City Chapter Membership Chairperson, a quick (Jerry.Rice@ngc.com) with your new mailing address. Jerry will work to update the local and national data base to ensure you continue to get all mailings. Windy City Chapter Board of Director Nominations. The Windy City Chapter of the AOC is once again in the process of bringing together a ballot for several Board of Director (BoD) seats that will be need to be filled in October as incumbent BoD terms end. Please give serious consideration to becoming a Windy City BoD member. If you are interested, please contact Joe Duthie to discuss what is involved in becoming a Board member and what would be expected from you when on the Board. BoD members agree to serve a 3-year term and typically assume a responsibility on the Board to support the yearly chapter events and activities. 19 th Annual Bob Kranz Memorial Golf Classic. (Con t From Page 1) The Kranz family again was well represented, and it was great seeing all of them for this day of remembering Bob. Bob s sons Mark and Kevin were in from California playing golf and enjoying the festivities. The golfing family members included Bob s brother-in-law, Vern Guenther, and Bob s sister, Jean, Bob s sons Kevin and Mark. Joining us for dinner: Bob s sister Laverne and brother-in-law Ray Radlein; niece Amy Udoni and her husband Jim and niece Beckie and her husband Bob Loughlin. As you can see, this family greatly supports the AOC scholarship fund. The Kranz Family A special thanks is due again to this year s golf chairperson, Sharon Kuzmiak for the major effort in putting together the day s event. Thanks also to Lisa Yerkes and Diana Dutka for WINDJAMMER 2
19 th Annual Bob Kranz Memorial Golf Classic. (Con t From Page 2) the great pictures in this Windjammer. Gale Schumacher, Mary Bolger and Alicia Bean also deserve thanks for their help with the outing. All the proceeds from this golf day go into the AOC Windy City Chapter Educational Foundation treasury, which provides six $2,500 scholarships to promising students pursuing careers in engineering and scientific fields. Costco, Crystal Lake; Jim Udoni and Lisa and Brad Yerkes. If I missed anyone who donated prizes, accept my apology. Jean Guenther and Laverne Radlein carried on the Mom Kranz tradition of providing a crystal piece for auction. This item was well received and raised additional dollars for the scholarship fund. Thanks, Jean and Laverne. Thanks to Kevin Kranz for the bags of Pistacia nut that he grows on his nut farm in California. They made great door prizes. Thanks to Sharon Kuzmiak for tallying the score cards. A final thanks to Dale Slater, Johnson Service Group for the winners trophies that they donate every year. They also donated many raffle prizes. It s nice to have such generous friends supporting the AOC events. The winner of the $ Gift Card from Tweeters was Jerry Dutka. This prize was donated by Dave Gill, always a great supporter of our scholarship programs. The Windy City Golf Committee The golf committee was great and really contributed to make this year s event an enjoyable day of golf and comradery. Committee members included: Sharon Kuzmiak, Lisa Yerkes, Gale Schumacher, Mary Bolger, Arlicia Bean and Diana Dutka. You may recall Gale, Diana and Mary helped you chose the right club to get the ball in the circle at the 13th hole. The golfers really appreciated the expert advice ladies. Thanks golfers for all your donations at this wager hole. An extra thanks to, Gale, Arlicia and Sharon for the super job they did in selling the raffle tickets and their help in handling the prize drawings and auction. All the committees were instrumental in making the participating golfers happy to be supporting the AOC Educational Foundation. A special thanks to Dave Gill for his $750 Tweeter gift certificate for our top raffle prize. Dave takes over for John Grace who retired to Florida. This year s Bob Kranz trophy winning score was 64, eight under par, won by two teams and decided by a toss of a die. The winning team was Glen Wilde, John Haag, Mike Belbot and Clayton Van Sickle. The other team who lost the die toss was: Jeff Piebanski, John Bleile, Mike Blake and Doug Bieschke. They were deemed the second place winners. The 64 was not as great as last year s 59, but understandable because of the wet and windy course conditions. Great game guys. See you in 2007 to defend your title. Thanks to all those who golfed, worked on the committee, and donated raffle/golf/door prizes. The following donated prizes: AOC Windy City Chapter; Marie Duthie, The Canteen Restaurant of Barrington; Guy Cicinelli, Wes Tech Associates; Jay and John Craig, Crystal Woods Golf Club; Jerry and Diana Dutka; Tom McGuire, ESA Tech Marketing; Jean and Vern Guenther; Dave Gill, G&Z Industries; Mary, Heng Wing Chinese Restaurant; Dale Slater and Lou Bertone, Johnson Service Group; Kevin Kranz; Sharon Kuzmiak; Northrop Grumman; Laverne and Ray Radlein; The winner of the door prize was Carol Mikulay. Thanks to all who made the 19th Bob Kranz Memorial Classic a great success again this year. We hope to see all of you again at the 22th Annual Ed Adams Memorial Classic golf outing on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Crystal Woods Golf Club in Woodstock! WINDJAMMER 3

Windy City AOC Judges State Science Fair. By Bill McConnell As it has every year since 1989, the Education Foundation of the Windy City Chapter of the AOC provided judges for Special Awards given at the Illinois Junior Academy of Sciences (IJAS) state fair, held at the Assembly Hall of the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. This year s fair, held on May 6, involved over 1000 projects by middle and high school students from the all over the state of Illinois. Science teachers and parents from all over the state enthusiastically supported the students as they set up their exhibits and made final preparations for grilling by judges. Having been already screened at their local school and Regional level, most of the students were well-polished in their delivery of the hypotheses and proofs of their projects. Lots of hard work was evident in the project displays and written presentations. The AOC judges spent nearly three hours reviewing projects in the fields of Aerospace Science, Computer Science, Electronics, and Engineering before selecting our winners Each winner was called forward at the Awards Ceremony in the Assembly Hall to receive a Certificate of Achievement and a $200 U.S. Savings Bond. AOC judges at the fair included Charlene Ceci, Ken and Felicity Gorham, George Holada, Kurt Lawson, Oscar Lewis, Bill McConnell, Zeke Ornelas, John Pasurda, Marc and Amy Strong, Bill Williams, and Lou Zink. The AOC judges convoyed down after leaving Rolling Meadows at 6 a.m. The trip down and back required a considerable investment of time on a beautiful spring Saturday. But all agreed that giving their time and expertise to encourage interest in the sciences among our youth was well worth the effort. Windy City AOC will again judge at the regional level in March- 2007, and at the state level in May Contact Bill McConnell (ext. 6666) or Ken Gorham (ext. 4776) to join our team of judges for a truly satisfying Saturday! Computers: 10th grader Elsa Culler from Lincoln Park High School in Chicago with her project Tough or Diabolical? An Analysis of Sudoku Difficulty Level. AOC judge Charlene Ceci Engineering: 9th grader Richard Hutyra from Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights with his project Propeller Blades. AOC judges John Pasurka, Zeke Ornelas, Bill Williams, and Lou Zink Electronics: 7th grader Brendan Wesp from Blessed Sacrament School in Springfield with his project Can Fruits Be Batteries?. AOC judges Ken and Felicity Gorham, and Oscar Lewis Aerospace: 8th grader Nicky Delaney from Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove with her project Don t Just Wing It. AOC judges Marc and Amy Strong, George Holada, and Kurt Lawson. WINDJAMMER 11
An Old Crow Remembered. By Joe Duthie On August 2, 2006, approximately 1-year after he passed away, Ron Langietti was remembered by his family, friends and coworkers at Northrop Grumman Defensive Systems Division (DSD) in Rolling Meadows, IL. The Systems Analysis Vault (a.k.a. The Vault as it is affectionately known) was dedicated in honor of Ron and a metal engraved plaque with Ron s image was hung at the entrance to the The Vault. The dedication ceremony was attended by Ron s wife, Mary Jane, and his two sons, Christopher and Matthew (see photo below). The inscription on the plaque reads: Ronald Langietti devoted his career to developing and fielding the most effective electronic defensive systems possible to protect the world s aircraft and aircrews. As Director of Business Operations and formerly as Director of Advanced Systems, Ron was an acknowledged industry leader in the fields of electro-optics, infrared countermeasures, and modeling and simulation. His vision, passion, tenacity, and intellect were crucial in establishing Northrop Grumman as the preeminent supplier of airborne electronic warfare systems to U.S. and foreign customers. The dedication ceremony took place in a nearby conference room to The Vault and was filled to capacity. Bill Ober, Director of New Business, welcomed everyone, including Mary Jane, Matt & Chris, and said some words about how Ron guided new business developments for Northrop Grumman DSD through the years. Carl Smith, Vice President of Engineering and Operations, then described how Ron led most new technology developments illustrated in the technology and product capability posters that line the conference room, and how we've all been touched by Ron (literally and figuratively). For those that knew Ron, this was a humorous poke at Ron s lively and compassionate management style. Dan Bergsma, Manager of Systems Engineering, then gave all in attendance a quick introduction into the construction and work that is performed in The Vault. Dan described the 12 thick reinforced concrete walls, the one-ton hardened steel doors, the numerous motion detectors and security features that even mice cannot evade; including the internal screen room that prevents computer RF emanations from being inadvertently transmitted outside the confines of The Vault. Dan then followed up with the following: While these are interesting physical attributes, the most impressive aspect of The Vault are the men and women that work there and what they do. In The Vault, we analyze intelligence data on air defense weapon systems, determine their vulnerabilities, and develop countermeasures techniques to defeat them. Before much hardware or the first millionth line of software is written, we perform modeling and simulation to assure ourselves that we have a viable EW concept to defeat these weapon systems. Once our EW system has been built, The Vault personnel are then responsible for testing it against actual enemy weapon systems to assure it will effectively protect aircraft in an operational environment. All of this effort is critical to the successful design and fielding of our systems. Dan then described why it was fitting that The Vault be dedicated in Ron s name. Before he was Director of Business Operations, before he was Director of Advanced Systems, Ron got his start and actually did real work as an engineer and first level manager in The Vault. Ron built this organization to be the premier modeling & simulation and systems analysis group in our industry, numbering upwards of 30 people. As a result of his work in The Vault, Ron was awarded a National AOC Award for Modeling & Simulation and was inducted as a charter member of the Association s Technical Hall of Fame. Dan then continued: Due to his early work in the Vault, Ron came to realize, perhaps better than the rest of us, the implications of the high-stakes game that is core to our business. Sometimes the enemy radar and sensor and weapon systems side is ahead in this game, sometimes our electronic warfare and defensive systems side is ahead. When the missiles and bombs start flying, the clock stops and whichever side has the best technology, the most accurate intelligence, the most innovative tactics and employment doctrine will win the game. The survival of our aircrews, the ability of the United States to prosecute air warfare to defend our national interests and freedom, the continued sovereignty of some allied nations that acquire our defensive systems, hangs in the balance. This is why, throughout his career, Ron continually pushed himself, pushed us, and pushed the rest of Northrop Grumman to develop the most advanced technology and highest performing defensive electronics systems in the industry and the world. Following these very heartfelt words and sentiments, Dan then asked Mary Jane to assist with the unveiling of the plaque. Mary Jane thanked everyone at the end and stated she did not fully realize the extent of Ron s impact on us until this ceremony. In addition to his numerous accolades from the AOC organization, Ron received a Laurel Award from Aviation Week and Space Technology. Additionally, Ron holds numerous patents including one for an Aircraft Location and Identification System. While Ron was part of a team of engineers and scientists that contributed to Northrop Grumman's missile defense system, it was his vision, enthusiasm, tenacity, and technical leadership that paved the way for a successful program and ultimately the safe return home of countless airmen over the past decade. For all of us that knew Ron, we will miss his technical acumen, his enthusiastic approach to work and life, his unique management style, and his driving desire to be the best at whatever he did. A desire that he promoted and instilled in all that he worked and interfaced with. He is truly missed. See Page 14 for photos from The Vault dedication ceremony. WINDJAMMER 12
The Windy City Chapter Educational Foundation Needs Your Help. Tuition and other expenses continue to rise at both state and private universities. That makes the dollars contributed to the Windy City Century Club and other Educational Foundation fundraisers even more important than they have been in the past. The charter of the Century Club is to perpetuate the AOC Windy City Chapter Educational Foundation, which promotes technical excellence through scholarships. Century Club members agree to fund the Windy City AOC Educational Foundation each and every year. Maintaining the health of the Century Club may well make the difference between one or more of our scholarship students being able to continue their education, or having to drop out of school. At the very least, Century Club contributions will make our students better able to concentrate on their studies. The downturn in the economy has made scholarship money harder to find, at the same time that cuts in budgets have forced universities to raise tuition and fees at rates far exceeding the rate of inflation. The need for the AOC Educational Foundation to expand our scholarship program has never been greater, but we are constrained, in part, by shrinking membership in the Century Club as well as former Century Club members falling away in renewing their yearly pledges to this important outreach. The Windy City Educational Foundation Board of Directors voted to increase the scholarship awards for year 2005 and beyond to $2,500 for each student. This represents the first increase in our scholarship awards in almost 5 years. Your continued support to the Century Club is critical to the Windy City Educational Foundation maintaining the value and number of scholarships awarded each year. For those that have trouble remembering to make their yearly $100 contribution, you may want to consider becoming a Century Club Life Member. For a one-time $1,000 contribution, you will be added to the prestigious ranks of Life member. To date, the Century Club has 14 Life members. Some of the life members continue to support the Educational Foundation by continuing to make yearly contributions of $100. Your support above and beyond the call does not go unrecognized. Every contribution counts and they are all tax deductible. New Century Club members are being sought for this prestigious organization. As a member of the Century Club, your name and/or company name will be inscribed on the plaque displayed in the place of honor (within the 600A cafeteria at Northrop Grumman DSD) with the AOC Windy City Chapter scholarship plaques. You will also receive a personal plaque to commemorate your membership in the Century Club. Because volunteers run the AOC chapter, you can be sure that 100% of each contribution is used towards only providing scholarships. The Century Club ranks as one of the primary fundraisers for the Windy City Educational Foundation, bringing in thousands of dollars each year. In order for the Educational Foundation to remain strong and viable, we need to sign-up new members to this very worthwhile cause. Please take some time to review your finances and your yearly charitable contributions and see if there is room to fit membership into the Windy City Century Club. Providing financial support to students seeking degrees in a field of engineering, particularly students interested in working in National Defense, seems like a worthy cause that all AOC members should be interested in supporting. Thanks for your consideration of this yearly charity. The list below recognizes existing Century Club Standard and Life Members: Member AUER, Joseph A.
