1 November DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron From the President: This is an election year and the members will be voting for individuals who will compose the Desert Mashie 2012/13 Board of Directors. The election ballots will be mailed out during the month of November. Exercise your right to vote and return the ballot by the due date. Desert Mashie s November s Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, 2011 at The Duke Golf Course. This is our annual Turkey Shoot. There will be plenty of prizes so don t be left out. The cost of the tournament is $55 for members and $60 for guests. You can register via the Desert Mashie website, or you can contact Cecil Mosley at or cjm5270@msn.com. Tournament information can also be found on the website. The Board of Directors has approved the Desert Mashie s 64th Annual to be held at The Arizona Golf Resort and Superstition Springs Golf Course. The dates of the tournament have also changed. Desert Mashie will be leaving its traditional Mother s day weekend and changing to Friday and Saturday, March 30th & 31st, The tournament will be dedicated to Dr. William Bill Dickey. The club will host a testimonial dinner and birthday party for Bill. So, mark your calendar and plan to be part of the festivities. The tournament will be open to the first 240 golfers. Entry blanks will be mailed out on December 28 th. This year, Desert Mashie will be hosting a New Year s Golf Tournament, Awards Dinner and Dance. Carolyn Suttles, our Social Chairperson, will be mailing out formal invitations within the next two weeks. You can also visit the web site for additional information. I would like to thank all the members who sent me a Get Well Card. The operation to remove my Thyroid was a complete success and my Thyroid was benign. 2 Hole In One POT The club has initiated a $500 Hole-in-One Pot. Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the $500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during the same event, the prize fund will be divided. The man said to the dentist, doctor, I m in one hell of a big hurry! I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf. So forget about the anesthetic and just pull the tooth and be done with it. I don t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work! The dentist thought to himself, my goodness, this sure is a very brave man, asking me to pull his tooth without using anything to kill the pain. So the dentist asked him, which tooth is it, sir? The man turned to his wife and said, open your mouth Honey, and show him the doctor which tooth hurts.

5 People CONGRATULATIONS To Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Ford. Irene and Vernon tied the knot in Las Vegas this past Month and will reside in Scottsdale, AZ. Best wishes and may you live a long and happy life together! 2011 SBS Alumni Hall of Fame Recipient Booker Travis Evans, Jr. Booker T. Evans, Jr is a shareholder in the International law firm of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, and is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Evans focuses his practice in the areas of white collar crime and commercial litigation and is experienced in the areas of criminal defense, commercial litigation, products liability, insurance matters, criminal and civil RICO cases and healthcare matters. Mr. Evans has substantial civil and criminal trial experience; having tried cases involving allegations of defective products, bad faith on the part of insurance carriers, disputes over real estate holdings, copyright and trademark infringement, as well as a number of cases involving allegations of criminal conduct. He also handles post-conviction cases in Federal Courts and is often retained in matters involving the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. Before entering private practice, Mr. Evans served as a Chief Deputy District Attorney in Las Vegas, Nevada; as an Assistant United States Attorney in both Nevada and Arizona; and as Corporate Counsel for Arizona Public Service Company. He is licensed and practices in both Arizona and Nevada. Booker T. Evans, Jr received his B.S. in 1969 and his M.A. in 1971, from Northern Arizona University. In 1978, he received his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University School of Law. While attending Northern Arizona University, Mr. Evans served as the founding President of the University's first African-American Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi; was the first African-American to serve on the Inter- Fraternity Council; was active in student government; and received his Gold Axe Award in He continued his relationship with the University after graduation by serving on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, including serving as the President of the Board in Prior to beginning his legal career, Mr. Evans served as a Psychologist and Director of the Westside Counseling Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and also served as a Counselor and Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the North Campus of Miami-Dade Community College. 8 Rules Changes for 2012 The U.S. Golf Association and the R&A announced Monday changes to the Rules of Golf and the Rules of Amateur status. Under the new Rules of Golf, which will be in effect from , a player is no longer penalized if their ball is moved, through no fault of their own, after address. A stated example was, if wind causes a player s ball to move on the green following address, the player will play the ball from its new position without penalty. "This change will speed up play, there won t be as many suspensions and players won t be getting penalized or disqualified unfairly. It is definitely giving us players a little bit of a break," said three-time major champion Padraig Harrington. Other changes to the Rules include: *Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4). Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached. *Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a). The rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition of competition. The Rules of Golf are constantly evolving and our hope is that what we have produced for 2012 is clear, informed by common sense and reflective of the demands of the modern game, said David Rickman, R&A director of rules and equipment standards. Regarding changes to the Rules of Amateur Status, an amateur golfer who is at least 18 years of age may now enter into a contract and/or agreement with a third party (such as an agent) soley in relation to the player s future as a professional golfer. The player may not obtain financial gain as an amateur and cannot be required to play in certain amateur or professional events. Other changes include: *Professionalism; Contracts and Agreements (New Rule 2-2(a)). An amateur golfer may now enter into a contract and/or agreement with his national golf union or association, provided the golfer does not obtain any financial gain, directly or indirectly, while still an amateur golfer. *Subsistence Expenses (Rule 4-3). An amateur golfer may receive reasonable subsistence expenses, not exceeding actual costs, to assist with general living costs, provided the expenses are approved by and paid through the golfer s national golf union or association.

9 By RODNEY GREEN IT'S BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT THOUSANDS OF GOLFERS QUIT THE game every year and it's safe to say that slow play is the reason. Slow play has become such a problem that the PGA Tour has invoked a one-stroke penalty for offenders. And the United States Golf Association has come up with a Pace Rating System that evaluates courses fat playability and determines how long a round should take. Suffice it to say that the USGA believes that except for severe weather conditions, extreme difficulty of a course, or high-stakes tournament pressure, a round of golf should tarely take more than four hours. While it is expected that beginner golfers may take more time to playa round, there are far more 15 to 20 handicappers who are slow players rhan any other type out there. Far too often when golfers first begin to play, they are never taught the proper etiquette, let alone the importance of pace of play. Most golf courses have a tee time interval of eight minutes, so as you are playing your round, always be mindful of the group in front of you. If they are starring to pull away from you, you are falling out of position. Dispel the old adage that if you don't see anyone behind you then you're okay. It's the group in front of you that counts; you must keep up. I have listed a few tips that will help you cut your round time easily by 15 to 30 minutes.» Know your game. Play to the tees that fit your skill set. Those with a 20 handicap have no business playing from the championship tees.» Keep watch. Observe your ball until it stops rolling. Pick out a fixed object like a tree or a bush to mark your ball's position.» Trim the ride. When two players are riding in a car together, once you reach one player's ball, drop that player off and go to your ball. Then after the first player hits she or he can start walking to the carr.» Save the drama. Everyone who has ever played golf has missed a two-foot putt. Walk up, tap it in, and keep It moving.» Be prepared. If using a cart on a can't path-only day, take more than one club with you when you walk to your ball.» Trim your swings. Cut down on the practice swings, and take one or two at the most.» Reading is fundamental. Start reading your putt before it's your turn to play. As long as you are not in the sight line of your playing partners you can easily begin to survey yours.» Write on. Mark the scores on the next tee instead of beside the green of the hole just played.» Have a Plan B. If you are unsure whether your ball has come to rest out of bounds or if it may be lost, immediately hit a provisional ball so that you won't have to return to the spot to replay the shot.» Diminish your returns. When chipping around the green, carry both the club with which you'll be chipping and your putter so you don't have to return to the cart. There are many other tips to list, but the bottom line is 4Yz to 5 hours on a golf course is entirely too long.
