January / February / March 2014 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron FROM THE PRESIDENT: Hello Fellow Mashies, We are 3 months into the year, it s Spring, and golfing weather is perfect. Below are some of the in-progress projects and events for our Club for this year. We will attend and represent Desert Mashie at the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) 60 th Annual in Reno, NV June 24 June 28. Last year, 23 Desert Mashie family, members, and friends traveled to Reno for the 59 th Annual. Since Desert Mashie has the largest membership in WSGA, let s start making plans now so we can also have the largest representation at the Annual, and surpass our numbers from last year. Carolyn Suttles and Bea Baker are selling raffle tickets for prizes in connection with WSGA s Annual. Please contact Carolyn or Bea for your tickets. Their contact information is listed below. REMEMBER: You can t win if you don t buy a ticket (or tickets). 1 LAST NAME FIRST NAME CITY HOME PHONE WORK PHONE Baker Bea Phoenix Suttles Carolyn Goodyear (602) (602) thephonedoc@aol.com (623) (c)(602) bayne0312@gmail.com There will be 2 drawings and 2 chances to win. The dates of the drawings are as follows: Pacific Desert Classic Golf Tournament: April 13, 2014 Cosmopolitan Golf Tournament: May 4, 2014

It is not too late to get in the 1 st drawing. I will be going to Beaumont, CA next weekend to play in Pacific Desert Classic s Annual tournament, and will be taking up the stubs of all raffle tickets that have been sold by Desert Mashie, to date. If you haven t been able to catch up with Carolyn or Bea to purchase your tickets, or if you don't know how to connect with them to get your tickets, please call me, and I will ensure you will be entered into the drawings, and you will receive your donation tickets. Call me at , and we will work out the details. We would really like for Desert Mashie to be #1 in raffle ticket sales in 2014, instead of in 2nd place as we were in Betty Shelton, our Social Committee Chair, will be working on 2 bus trips this year -- 1 to San Diego in September to participate in Paramount Golf Club s Annual Tournament; and 1 in October to Las Vegas to play in Valley View Golf Club s Annual. Our membership is 151 strong, and we still want more members. My belief is the more the merrier, so if you have any golfer or non-golfer family members or friends, please invite them to join Desert Mashie. This is not the Board of Directors club, nor is it my (the President s) club THIS IS YOUR CLUB. You know the saying it takes a village to raise a child, well it takes all members to sustain and grow a club. 2 While I m on that subject, our tournament participation rate is very low. The turnout at our monthly tournaments is only around 25%. While I appreciate your membership, I also want you to come out and play with us. If you have any suggestions on what we can do better to get you to come out and play in our monthly tournaments, please let me know. You can send me an to james5297@cox.net. Respectfully yours, Leroy H. James President

Sean got a Hole-in-One on Hole # 17, 312 yards, over water and a bunker on Feb. 28. Unfortunately, no one in the 4-some realized Sean had hit a hole-in-one until they got to and checked the cup. Sean struck what felt like a perfect shot which headed straight at the pin. As the group approached the green, there was no ball in sight. They checked out of bounds area, the water and bunker, all to no avail. As Sean started to head back to the tee box, Craig asked if anyone had checked the cup. Well, only after Sean checked the ball markings of the ball that was in the cup did he realize he had hit the big one.

JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION of ARIZONA Twenty Desert Mashie members volunteered last weekend (March 29 th and 30 th ) at the Desert Mashie Spring Classic tournament which was put on by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA). The tournament was held at Encanto Golf Course and Encanto 9. There were 200 Juniors registered for this tournament, and 18 of our Juniors played in the tournament. In addition to coming from local Arizona cities, some Juniors came from the more distant cities of Tucson, Prescott, Yuma and Flagstaff, and some came all the way from Iowa, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Canada. This Junior Golf tournament was started by Desert Mashie around 30 years ago. The pioneers of this event, Messrs. Bob Kirkendoll, Leonard Walker and Bill Dickey, et al, started this tournament to give the Desert Mashie Juniors something to do during Spring Break from school. Well, after just a few years, other non-desert Mashie junior golfers throughout the Valley heard about the tournament and wanted to play. As the participation rate continued to grow, it was decided this would be a great event to run in conjunction with the JGAA who puts on tournaments throughout Arizona. When JGAA took over this tournament, they committed that as long as any of the Desert Mashie founding members of the tournament are alive, the tournament would carry the name Desert Mashie. Well, since Leonard is the last of these founding members, he knows the deal he is not allowed to leave here. The JGAA thanks Harold Fields and the rest of the volunteer's from the Desert Mashie group who helped out last weekend. JGAA has put on The Desert Mashie Spring Championship which has been run in conjunction with the Mashies since It was very fulfilling and enlightening to volunteer at this event. Below are a few of the photos from this event. To see more photos click on the following link and scroll down to the Desert Mashie Spring Championship Recap. Another life lessons that is taught to our Juniors is to remove their caps when they eat. Let s reinforce that training by removing our caps before we eat, also. Hats and caps are more trendy these days, but we don t want to get into the habit of foregoing etiquette for trend. Hats and baseball-like (golf) caps are ok in coffee houses, informal cafés, etc., but should be removed when dining in more formal settings. 11 B. Walker verifying scores. I do, however, need a count of everyone planning on playing no later than Thursday, April 10, I have also been able to secure a free foursome so this will help offset the cost of our green fees. 15 GOLF TIP OF THE DAY "Are you really picking your head up?" The most common saying in golf is "keep your head down." The question is, are you actually picking your head up? When you hit a thin shot that dribbles along the ground, it would seem that a player must have picked their head up. My experience is that most player's don't pick their head up at all, what they do is pull their arms and hands up toward their body causing the club to hit the ball low on the clubface producing a skull shot. To fix the problem, hit balls focusing on brushing grass ahead of the ball and going to a three quarter, fullyextended finish. This will help keep your arms extended, producing more consistency and power. 15 Golf Tip of the Day by Trevor Gliwski

Trevino When I'm on the golf course and it starts to rain and lightning, I hold up my one iron, 'cause I know even God can't hit a one iron. You don't know what pressure is until you've played for five dollars a hole with only two dollars in your pocket. Putts get real difficult the day they hand out the money. "My swing is so bad that I look like a caveman killing his lunch." By: Lee Trevino Golf is the most fun I've had with my clothes on. I am not saying my game went bad, but if I grew tomatoes they would come up sliced. My family was so poor they couldn't afford to have kids, so the lady next door had me. 16 One of the nice things about the Senior Tour is that we can take a cart and a cooler. And if your game is not going well, you can always have a picnic.

A FEW GOLF CARTOONS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT 17

THE LAWS OF GOLF LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime. LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former. LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down. LAW 5: No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe. LAW 6: The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor. 18 LAW 7: Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire. LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. LAW 9: Palm trees eat golf balls. LAW 10: Sand is alive. If it isn't, how do you explain the way it works against you? LAW 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. LAW 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination. LAW 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed. LAW 14: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (See Law three).

LAW 15: A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty. LAW 16: "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker." LAW 17: The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you. LAW 18: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be. LAW 19: Golf should be given up at least twice per month. LAW 20: All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset. 19

People, places and things! People - Have a story to tell about yourself, a friend, or loved one? Do you have a birth announcement or want us to pray for an ailing family member or friend? Got an anniversary or birthday coming up? Places - Have you recently discovered a great new course that you want to share with us? Discovered a good deal somewhere? Or maybe you re going on vacation and want to know if anyone knows of a great course to golf at your destination. 21 Things - How about all that golf equipment you keep buying to improve your game, but alas, you realize it s really operator error so you now want to unload it? Well, drop us a note or give us a call and we ll put it in the monthly newsletter. Just get me your information at least 7 days prior to the first of each month and we ll publish it on this page!

People, places and things! We lost one of our longtime members last month. Lloyd Jefferson was a Lifetime Member, and even though he was a non-golfer, you could always find him helping out in the Hospitality Suite during our Annual Tournaments. Lloyd was very popular and will be missed by many. Herbye White is mourning the loss of his only sister, Darryl. Herbye attended the services, and has returned home, but the loss continues. Please keep Herbye in your thoughts and Prayers as he mourns this loss. Gloria Douglas: One of our other faithful golfer members is being treated for Valley Fever. Pam Hill: Pam s surgery was successful, is on the mend. She is back on the course, but promises she is taking it easy. 22 Please keep our members and their families in your thoughts and prayers. If you have any life events (birth, illness, weddings, deaths, celebrations, etc.) in your family, please let me know so we can be sure to notify our membership. There is some truth to the saying there is strength in numbers. The more individuals, thoughts, and prayers we can rally to our cause, the better.

If you re wondering why I continue to run this, it s because this is the most important of all articles that I submit to you in each Newsletter. If you don t keep hydrated, you will NOT have a good experience on the golf course in this Arizona weather. So remember We are in the desert don t forget. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. 23 Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body.

Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. 24 Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health.
