1 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron Hello Desert Mashie Family, We are headed into the last two months of the year, and I m still wondering where has the time gone. During the month of October, our beloved Bill Dickey was laid to rest. Bill was a true icon to the world of golf, and to the Desert Mashie Golf Club. In addition to Bill s major contributions to the Desert Mashie Golf Club, he was a leader among black golfers and a champion to minority youngsters everywhere. For our newer members who did not have the honor of knowing Bill and of his many accomplishments, here are but a few. Bill started the Bill Dickey East-West Golf Classic, which celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year. This event is held in the Phoenix area annually, and attracts over 100 golfers from the northern, southern, eastern and western states. The Bill Dickey Scholarship Association (BDSA) (formerly the National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association (NMJGSA) was an idea of Bill s in the mid 1970's to address a need for a national organization to promote a junior golf program. This idea became a reality in Bill also founded the Bill Dickey Junior Invitational in 2000 for the nation s top high school minority golfers; and he was also the co-founder of the prestigious National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, which most recently celebrated its 26th year. Unfortunately Norma and I were not able to attend the memorial service for Bill as we were out of town attending the home going services for one of our family members, but I have been told that many of the youth who benefited from Bill s visions and efforts were in attendance. It goes without saying that Bill and his many accomplishments will remain in our hearts and minds for years to come. REMINDER: Don t forget to get registered for Desert Mashie Turkey Shoot tournament which will be held at The Duke, in Maricopa, on Sunday, November 18, at 7:30 a.m. Please go to the Desert Mashie website ( and sign up for this tournament. You can use your credit or debit card to pay for the tournament while you re in the website, although it is not mandatory to pay at this time. You can pay by cash to the Desert Mashie representative at the tournament, or bring your check made payable to DESERT MASHIE GOLF CLUB for payment for this tournament. Don t forget, this will be a good time to win your turkey for Thanksgiving.

2 Desert Mashie s December tournament will be held on December 31 at Tuscany Falls Golf Course. This will be our Annual New Year s Eve Tournament. Below is information on this tournament. Keep in mind for $5.00 more ($55.00) total payment by December 1, the guest could become a non-golfer Desert Mashie member for the remainder of 2012 and full year 2013, and would have free entry into the Dinner/Dance. Also, as a member, you and your spouse or friend would receive notification of all Desert Mashie events and communications. 5 On October 12, 27 Desert Mashie members, family and friends departed Phoenix on a chartered bus for a fun-filled trip to Las Vegas, with the ultimate goal being participation in Valley View Golf Club s 54 th Annual Tournament. Utilizing various modes of transportation, a total of 37 Desert Mashie members, family and friends traveled to Nevada for this event, and 22 of our members played in the tournament. While us golfers were up and out on Saturday and Sunday morning chasing that little around the course, many of the non-golfers enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, some much deserved R & R, shopping, or casino action. None of us came back as millionaires, but needless to say, a great time was had by all who made the trip with us. Below are some photos taken after the tournament. 6 WOMEN IN GOLF Emma Mosley Women In Golf Coordinator The Sisters Across America golf tournament for 2013 will be from April 26 28, 2013, at the Sycuan Golf & Tennis Resort in San Diego, CA!!! So mark your calendars. Let's plan to attend. The Sisters are sponsoring a new young lady named Ginger Howard. Ginger is 18 years old; she is playing on the Symetra Tour and is ranked 32nd. Unfortunately, Shasta Averyhardt has passed the age criteria to be sponsored by SAA. NORTH SOUTH SHOOTOUT Oct. 6: It was a beautiful weekend in Montebello, California. The Montebello Country Club was laid out with trees, long fairways and undulating greens; just perfect for a round of golf. There were 45 ladies from the North and South ready to play at 10 a.m. The 40 chosen to play in the Match Play to decide the Shootout winner were excited. AZ/CO Northern ladies in the Shootout were Carolyn Suttles and Gildred Barber. When the matches were over, the South won the most matches 11 to 9. Carolyn and Gildred won their match. Below is a photo taken at the North-South Shootout. The 2013 Tournament will be a 2 DAY Tournament in Northern California on October 5th & 6th. Location to be announced. 7 I sent out a survey a few days ago requesting your ideas regarding the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) survey on the qualifying age for the Senior Flight for the WSGA Annual. In order for your voice to be heard, please make sure you complete this form and return to james5297@cox.net by Friday, Nov. 16. Our Desert Mashie Tournament Director, Pam Hill, has been working hard to ensure that we are playing nice tracks, in addition to keeping the price within our affordable range, so I ask that we all keep in mind that Pam is only as good as the members who come out and support her. Therefore, I ask that we all go to and review our remaining tournament scheduled for this year, and sign up on line. Remember, great participation is necessary to enable Pam to negotiate great rates. Golf definition the month Rule 16-1 The line of putt must not be touched, except to remove loose impediments, lifting or replacing the ball, repairing a ball mark (old or your own) or removing movable obstructions. The player can place the club down in front of the ball when addressing, but may not press anything down. The most common breach of this rule occurs when a player, partner or fellow competitor physically touches the point on the green where they should be aiming a putt. The line of putt can be pointed to, just not physically touched. Penalty for breach of rule: for stroke play, a two-stroke penalty; for match play, loss of hole. Hole In One POT The club has initiated a $500 Hole-in-One Pot. Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the $500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during the same event, the prize fund will be divided.

10 Too many people think that a sand wedge is just for bunker shots. The sand wedge should be used for sand shots as well as most pitch shots to the green. Patton It s not too early to start planning to renew your membership or recruit a new member for the Desert Mashie Golf Club. You can renew your membership or sign up as a new member by going into the website ( or by filling out the membership application below. Remember the challenge by Granville Brown, our WSGA President: Each One Recruit One. This is an excellent way to grow our club. Also, keep in mind, we are family, so if you have some family members who are golfers, or non-golfers, bring them along, too. The more the merrier. And, while you are at it, don t forget about getting your young grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, or friends involved in our Junior Golf Program. This is an excellent program for our youth to be able to explore their talents, meet other youth throughout the United States, as well as learn some valuable life skills, and have fun.

13 We are out of the hot summer months, but it is still important to stay hydrated. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body. Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is

14 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health. May the good things of life be yours in abundance, not only at Thanksgiving but throughout the coming year.
