April / May / June / July 2015 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron g PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: Hello Fellow Mashies, The last 4 months have been very busy, interesting, and challenging. Our Desert Mashie 67 th Annual was held on May 2 & May 3 at the San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, AZ. The weather was great and the tournament, while not profitable, went off very smooth. Our Desert Mashie member participation was 60% of the total golfers playing in this tournament, and the remaining 40% was made up of guests and golfers from the following other WSGA clubs, Bay Area, Cosmopolitan, Desert Trails, Honors, Hytee, Inland Empire, Mile High, Paramount, Sacramento Area Black, Tee Masters, and Valley View. to all who came out and supported us in celebrating our 67 th Annual. Also, I cannot forget to mention that my friend Will Heyward (former Desert Mashie member), from Australia, arranged his trip to the States so he could be here to play in our Annual. 1 I can t say enough about the dedication and hard work Danny Johnson put into this tournament after being in the position of Tournament Director less than 4 months. Also, Al Loveless hit the ground running to ensure everything was all set at the course, and the Rules were in place and adhered to. I also thank our volunteers for their suggestions, for attending all of the meetings, and for their assistance in preparing for and putting on this tournament. Our volunteers were as follows: Ernest Alexander, Pat Crawford, Rose Cotton, Maurice Cotton, Felicia Fields, Harold Fields, Carl Houchins, Maretta Houchins, Richard Hurley, Norma James, Cheryl Marshall, Eric Neal, Gloria Shelton, Carolyn Suttles, Juanita Walker and our irreplaceable, Leonard Walker. While we need golfer participation for a successful tournament, we also need volunteers to perform the upfront and the behind-the-scenes tasks. To all of our volunteers I say.

Also, to the volunteers who came out and helped us stuff the goodie bags for the golfers and registered non-golfers. We had great representation at the WSGA 61 st Annual in Portland, OR in June. There were 40 Desert Mashie members, family and friends in Portland for this event. The weather was perfect, and we had a ball. I will post the tournament winners and will share some of our photos from this event later in this newsletter. As Norma, Harold & Felicia Fields and I were waiting to board our flight very early Monday morning, June 22, we were treated to the most amazing surprise of our trip. I will share photos of that surprise later in this newsletter, also. We have only 5 more tournaments scheduled for this year, and I am hoping more of our members will come out and play in these events. We are averaging between 30 and 40 members in each tournament, and considering that we have over 120 golfer members, it is imperative that our participation rate increase. While we appreciate your membership, we also need you to play in the monthly tournaments. So, come on members, let s join together and have better showings in the last 5 tournaments for this year. Below are the details of the last 5 events for this year. Desert Mashie Golf Club 2015 Tournament Schedule Date Course Time Price Sat. - Aug. 15 Aguila Golf Course 7:00 am Shotgun $35 & $ 45 Desert Mashie Members $ Sat./Sun. - Sept. 19 & 20 San Marcos 8:00 am Shotgun $ (Club Championship) Sun. - Oct. 18 South Course, Sun City 7:30 am Shotgun $35.00 Sat. - Nov. 21 The Duke 8:00 am Shotgun $50.00 Sun. - Dec. 13 (Turkey Shoot) Encanto Golf Club / Junior Golfer Fundraiser TBA Register online Contact Danny Johnson dannyljohn@aol.com We always strive to schedule nice courses with reasonable green fees for your monthly play, however, this is not always possible, so as a way of giving back to our members, Desert Mashie will be paying part of the Green Fees for each and every Desert Mashie member who plays in the August tournament at Aguila on Saturday, August 15.

While we re reviewing the calendar, don t forget about our 2-day Club Championship in September. Lunch will be served after play on Sunday, and we will be presenting awards to the winners at that time, also. In addition to supporting our remaining 2015 monthly tournaments, there are two more Club tournaments which we will be supporting, as well. Desert Trails Golf Club in Tucson will be celebrating their 44 th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament on Sept 12 & 13. The host hotel and golf course will be the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. I plan to drive down to Tucson to play in this tournament and hope several of our members will help our sister club celebrate this important event. Below is a link to the Desert Trails 44 th Annual flyer which is posted in the WSGA website. DESERT TRAILS 44th ANNUAL -- Click on the link to bring up a copy of the Flyer which contains information on how to make your reservations at the hotel, as well as instructions for the golfers to register to play in the tournament. We are also still planning to make the bus trip to Las Vegas to play in Valley View s Annual on Oct.24 and 25. The bus will leave on Friday morning, Oct. 23, and return Sunday night, Oct. 25. Several Desert Mashie members and friends traveled to Las Vegas last year for this event, and 23 traveled with us on the 3, and everyone had,,. Our photo from last year s bus trip to Las Vegas --. Previously, the Club has cosponsored this trip, but due to budget constraints, we will not have that luxury this year. However, since this is a popular trip with our members, in order to take this trip, we have increased the round trip price so it will pay for itself. We are currently looking at $88.00 per person round trip, and we are hoping to get at least 10 more passengers on the bus. Come on, make this trip with us you won t regret it. Our bus is a very comfortable luxury liner, with wifi, outlets so you can charge your portable devices, we have snacks, watch movies, listen to music, play games, and enjoy the musical talents of any of our passengers who want to share their talent/gift with us, i.e. Dan Moss. Any others?

If you are planning to go to Las Vegas for this event, please be sure to make your hotel reservations to ensure you get the discounted rate. Below is a link to the Valley View 57 th flyer which is posted within the WSGA website. If you are a non-golfer, don t worry, you will have fun on the bus, and you will still have a chance to enjoy the thrills of Las Vegas. The hotel where we will be staying has lots of entertainment spots for your enjoyment, i.e., shows, movie theatre, huge bingo area, bowling alley, several restaurants, etc., so you don t have to feel pressed to go to the Strip, but if there s enough interest, we will schedule. VALLEY VIEW 57th ANNUAL Click on the link to bring up a copy of the Flyer which contains information on how to make your reservations at the hotel, as well as instructions for the golfers to register to play in the tournament. We held a general meeting on May 25, and I am trying to secure a location for our next meeting on November 12. This is election year, so put your thinking caps on to decide if you would like to run for a position on the Board, or whom you would like to nominate for a position. You will receive a note from the Nomination Committee within the next month or so, requesting your nominations and/or recommendations. The term for each position is 2 years. The following positions will be open for election: President Vice President Recording Sec. Treasurer Financial Sec. Junior Golf Dir. Corresponding Sec. Sergeant-at-Arms/ Parliamentarian 4 Members at Large 4 In accordance with the note which was sent by Carolyn Suttles, our Social Director, due to budget constraints, unfortunately we will not be having our New Year s Eve/Awards Dinner this year. This event was previously sponsored by Desert Mashie, but it has been deemed that the Club cannot continue to totally sponsor this event. The Desert Mashie Board is considering different events as fund raisers. Also, please keep in mind that while costs associated with putting on functions have increased, we have not increased our membership dues in around 10 years. With all of the creative talent we have in the Club, I am requesting that we all put on our thinking caps to come up with some creative ideas/recommendations for raising funds to subsidize some of our events, as well as chartering busses for our travel to some of the 2016 WSGA sanctioned tournaments, e.g., San Diego, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Southern California, etc. Please your ideas to james5297@cox.net. NO IDEA / RECOMMENDATION IS A BAD ONE.

I would be remiss, and dismissed, if I didn t say to my lovely daughter, Briggett, for surprising me by performing her rendition of Gladys Knight s Neither One of Us during the entertainment portion of our 67 th Annual on Saturday night, May 3. Briggett was familiar with some of the band members who were performing, so she asked them to accompany her. Unfortunately, I didn t get any photos I was so amazed and in awe that all I did was just sit, smile and enjoy her song. Thanks Honey, for your thoughtfulness.! Respectfully yours, 5 Leroy H. James President

PORTLAND HERE WE COME!!! Just before we boarded the plane enroute to Portland for the WSGA 61 st Annual, this distinguished looking pilot walked up to the pre-board area of the Southwest boarding gate where we were waiting. He was clearly very comfortable, because he smiled and said hello to Leroy. Well, being the person that Leroy is (always recruiting members for DM), he introduced himself, and the rest of us to this man. Now that they had really focused on each other, just as Leroy said Harold s name, the pilot echoed the same, and both he and Harold chuckled and said in unison I thought that was you! To the surprise of everyone else, the pilot was our very own Desert Mashie member Captain Mack Benn. 8

I have seen many pilots in my years, but I have never seen one as outgoing and pleasant as Captain Benn was. He made an effort to walk over and speak to us. The more common practices I have seen from pilots when they entered the gate area were: 1. Maybe chat with the airline boarding agent, or 2. Chat with another pilot if one is there, or 3. A few have glanced over at the passengers and a quick smile, but this was the first time I had ever seen a pilot walk over and chat with the passengers. 9 In addition to being very personable and professional, once we were at cruising altitude, Captain Benn announced to everyone that there were members from Desert Mashie Golf Club, of which he is also a member, on board, and we were enroute to Portland to play in the tournament. He wished us and his Club Good Luck in the tournament. It made us feel like celebrities. As you can see, he was very receptive to us coming into the cockpit after we arrived in Portland, and to taking pictures with us. I don t know if we are being partial since Mack is one of ours, but the 4 of us got off that flight in Portland exclaiming how this was the smoothest flight and landing we had ever experienced. But of one thing I am sure; it was Captain Benn s skilled landing that kept us from having to brace ourselves to keep from going through the back of the seat in front of us. YOU KNOW THE FEELING! He sat that big bird down oh-so smoooo-th, and glided right up to the receiving gate.

Well, as many of you witnessed, WSGA s 61 st Annual was outstanding. There was plenty to do, starting on Wednesday for the golfers who played in the practice round, and on Thursday for the non-golfers. However, us early arrivals were able to start exploring on Monday and/or Tuesday. We experienced one of the spots many visitors to Portland visit, with long lines to enter, no sitting nor standing around room it s just stand in line until you finally get inside where there are 4 or 5 cashiers taking everyone s order, someone else boxing it up, and on out the door - Voodoo Doughnuts. The donuts were great, but mostly I think it s the novelty of the place, and based on the volume of people going through there daily, it looks as if they will be in business for a long, long time. Not only do they have every kind of doughnut you can think of, e.g, Glazed, M&M, Trix, Bacon/Maple, Chocolate, cream, etc., so on, and so on and then there s the famous Texas size doughnut (see below), but they also have merchandise. Oh, and one important piece of advice don t go there planning to use your debit or credit card.check out the black sign at the top of the display case it says CASH ONLY, and there are more posted all around. This is a CASH ONLY establishment, but don t fret, there is an ATM machine on site. 10

Also, if you are ever in Portland and get a chance, you should visit the Washington Park which covers 410 acres and has several attractions, a zoo, forestry museum, arboretum, children's museum, rose garden, Japanese garden, amphitheatre, memorials, archery range, tennis courts, soccer field, picnic areas, playgrounds, public art and many acres of wild forest with miles of trails. Just make sure you have ample time and can explore and visit as many as you want. We visited the Rose Garden which is one of the main attractions. I promised you some photos of some of the happenings during the WSGA 61 st Annual, so here goes This was one of the best nights! When we got to this hospitality Suite on Tuesday night, everybody was partying like they never partied before. Way to go Mashies! 11

We see you Pat Trying to hide! Al Avery is no surprise he s always ready for a dance. Bob Williams thinks he s going to get an award for his mean chair dance. Thanks Gloria for this Glam pose. Cookie gets a pass because he is borrowing someone s charger to charge his phone. Leroy and Ted Burton trying to look as if they ve got a serious situation, and Ellen isn t faking she s just looking gorgeous.. 12 Ya-think they re all pooped out?? YUP! Rodney, where are you??!!. Oh, I know you were on the dance floor, just out of view. Wow. Sorry I missed you, but thanks for your enthusiasm and for keeping the party going.

I discovered it doesn t take a lot of expense to get an outfit together, either. There were some real creative outfits worn which required minimal to no extra cost. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

I wish we had gotten some photos of the Fish Fry which was held on Friday afternoon, but I guess I was too busy consuming the results. When I saw Fish Fry on the schedule for Friday afternoon, I quickly made the assumption that the fish fryer would be the kind we use at home which can hold up to about 6 pieces of fish. But nooooo, this group had Three L-a-a-a-rge industrial size fryers, from which they were hauling dozens of pieces of fish out of every few minutes. I enjoy frying fish, but not to the same degree as this crew, and certainly not in the heat of the day. It seemed like Friday was warmer than any other day that we were there. I tell you, this crew had this fish fry down to a fine art everything was prepped already, there was 1 person pulling bags of fish out of the ice chest as needed, 1 person mealing the fish, 1 person frying the fish, and another person cooking the fries. Oh, by the way, the cooks were not caterers, either, they were regular club members just like you and I, but they were so organized that all we could do was just stare,,, and marvel at their process. Let s all take our chef s hats off to Portland s Leisure Hour Golf Club! Unfortunately, there wasn t enough room in the hospitality suite for all of us to sit and eat at the same time, therefore, in order to find a place to sit down to eat, many of the WSGA visitors took their non-revenue-producing meals into the restaurant area of the hotel. Needless to say, the restaurant manager wasn t very happy, but he decided to grin and bear it. Here is a photo of some of the Desert Mashie members who were winners in the Men s B Flight. Cecil Mosley, Metalist and 1 st low Net, and Leroy James, 2 nd Low Net. 20 As you will see, the winners for the Men s B Flight were all Desert Mashie members.

SOME CARTOONS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT

'What? Whoa... hey... golf? Are You serious? No, I'm not on the golf course! I'm in a meeting, with clients.... For real, and... um... You're standing right behind me, aren't you?' 32

GOLF JOKE Terrible Weather Out There.. Bob was a religious golfer. Every Sunday morning, he headed to the golf course. It didn't matter what the weather was like. It could be raining and 45 degrees, but Bob didn't care. It was off to the course. Every single Sunday morning for years!! But one Sunday, Bob finally met his match with the weather. He got up early and drove out to the course, hoping the weather would improve by the time he hit the first tee. But once at the course, he knew he was beat. It was just a few degrees above freezing, and the rain was coming down steady and icy cold. For the first time in years, Bob headed back home on a Sunday morning. His wife was still in bed when he got there, so he took off his clothes, snuggled up to his wife's backside and said "Terrible weather out there." "Yeah," his wife replied, "and can you believe my idiot husband went golfing?" The Ravine Golf Joke Dan and Brandon are playing a spectacular new golf course built on very scenic terrain - cliffsides and gulleys and ravines. 33 They reach the 6th hole, where Dan slices a ball into a thickly wooded, deep ravine. But Dan is determined not to take a penalty stroke, so he grabs his 8- iron and starts descending into the ravine in search of his ball. The brush is terribly thick and tearing at Dan's clothes. The sunlight is dimmed by all the overhanging branches and vines. But Dan keeps searching, and finally spots something shiny down below. As he nears the object, he realizes it's not a ball, but a golf club. Dan takes a closer look only to discover that it is an 8-iron - and it's in the hands of a human skeleton laying near an old golf ball! Dan yells out for his partner. "Hey Brandon, get over here, I got trouble down here!" Brandon hurries over to the edge of the ravine and yells down, "What's the matter Dan?" Dan replies, "Bring me my 7-iron. You can't get out of this stuff with an 8."

One Liners Brand new golf balls are attracted to water, and the power of the attraction is in direct proportion to how much the balls cost. If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, it means he probably shot an eight. DESERT MASHIE SENIOR PLAYERS RULES In an effort to make golfing more enjoyable for our senior golfers, the following guidelines will be put into play for the first time during our next event which will be on Saturday, August 12, at Aguila. This is strictly voluntary. Senior Player Rules: Senior Players are authorized to compete from the Tees Forward of those used for regular competition during Desert Mashie Tournaments as long as they meet following requirements: Player must be 70+ years of age. 2. Player s Handicap Index is 22 or greater. 3. Player meets the requirements of 1 and 2 above and chooses to compete under Senior Player Rules. 4. Designation as a Senior Player is permanent. 5. Players designated as Senior Players by other Phoenix area clubs can exercise that status with Desert Mashie. 35 RULES: ARTIFICIAL DEVICES AND UNUSUAL EQUIPMENT From: Al Loveless Question 1: Is a player permitted to use the following equipment on a golf course? a) Standard binoculars. b) Compass. c) Booklet containing illustrations of the holes and providing accurate distances between various identifiable points. d) Training or swing aid. e) Hand warmer. Answer 1: a) Yes, Decision 14-3/3. b) Yes, Decision 14-3/4. c) Yes, Decision 14-3/5. d) No, Decision 14-3/10. e) Yes, Decision 14-3/13. Although a hand warmer is an artificial device, its use to warm the hands is traditionally accepted, and a player is not in breach of Rule 14-3 if he uses equipment in a traditionally accepted manner. 35 Note: A player may not use a hand warmer to heat a ball. Decision 14-3/13.5. Question 2: What are the circumstances under which a player is permitted to use a distance measuring device on the course? Answer 2: If the Committee has introduced a Local Rule allowing players to use devices that measure or gauge distance only. Note the use of the word "only" in the above answer. Decision 14-3/0.5 includes these words;... the use of a distance-measuring device that is [also] designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player's play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.) is not permitted regardless of whether such an additional function is used.

Golf Quotes If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death. ~Sam Snead They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that. ~Gardner Dickinson The number of shots taken by an opponent who is out of sight is equal to the square root of the sum of the number of curses heard plus the number of swishes. ~Michael Green Golf is a fascinating game. It has taken me nearly forty years to discover that I can't play it. ~Ted Ray They throw their clubs backwards, and that's wrong. You should always throw a club ahead of you so that you don't have to walk any extra distance to get it. ~Tommy Bolt 36. But you don't have to go up in the stands and play your foul balls. I do. ~Sam Snead, to Ted Williams, arguing which was more difficult, to hit a moving baseball or a stationary golf ball.

We are in the desert don t forget STAY HYDRATED. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. 37 Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body.

Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. 38 Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health.
