1 February DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron From the President: Our new web site should be up by the middle of the month. Your administrators for the new web site are Toni Davis, Cecil Mosley and George Colebrook Jr. A dry run of the site revealed it will be very informational. In an effort to get the members familiarized with the site, there will be various prizes that members will be eligible for simply by accessing the site. Example: each member will be required to access the website to establish a password. In addition, members will be asked to update their personal file to make sure all the information is correct and accurate. You will also be able to post your scores via the GHIN system, review all the upcoming Desert Mashie and Western States Golf Association s tournaments, be able to access MapQuest with a click of the mouse for direction to all the golf tournaments, view a monthly calendar of events, and pay for all tournaments, dues, special events via the web site. A hands-on demonstration will be conducted at the next General Meeting. Your tournament committee has worked very hard to provide the club with quality golf courses for the upcoming year. Our 1 st tournament of the year was quite exciting. There were a lot of new members participating. Remember, this is your club and your participation is necessary in order to secure adequate rates. Our next tournament is scheduled for Sunday, February 13 at Ken McDonald Golf Course. I have been told that the course is in excellent condition. If you haven t signed up, there is still time. 2 Hole In One POT The club has initiated a $500 Hole-in-One Pot. Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the $500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during the same event, the prize fund will be divided. Golf definition the month Green monster Someone who gets belligerent on the course DID YOU KNOW Fergus Muir, 66, from St Andrews, used a hickory-shafted putter on the par-3, 375 yard fifth hole at the town's Eden Course in November The feat has been ratified by Guinness World Records as a putt of 375ft, smashing the previous record of 166ft, which was set at Fishwick Hall golf club in Preston. HEARD A GOOD ONE. Golfing with the elderly A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in nine holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him. To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn't hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball - and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay. The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall."

3 WOMEN IN GOLF (WIG) Emma Mosley WIG Coordinator Hello Lady Golfers, I hope you will put WIG Golf Clinic at the top your list of things to accomplish in the New Year. We started again on January 29, 2011 at Ahwatukee Country Club. Please notify your friends and family that they do not have to travel to the west side to learn the basics of golf or improve their game. Learn swing, chipping, pitching, putting, etiquette and rules. The clinic will be taught by Mr. Lou Noto, a PGA Trained Golf Professional. 5 Ask the Rules guy Q: I was on the green and the rain was really starting to come down. So I decided to putt my ball with one hand on the putter while I held an umbrella with the other. My playing partner said I was cheating because I was blocking myself and my ball from the elements. But I told him as long as someone else wasn t holding the umbrella for me, I was in the clear. Who s right? A: You are. Under Rule 14-2a, you can t make a stroke while accepting protection against the elements-e.g., by getting your buddy to hold an umbrella over you while your putt. However, under Decision 14-2/2, you are not prohibited from protecting yourself from the elements, even while making a stroke. Q: I found what I thought was my ball in the fairway. I took a swing and completely whiffed, but when I looked down, I realized that the ball I swung at wasn t even mine! Since it wasn t my ball, there s no harm-no foul, right? A: Wrong. Decision 15/1 says that if a player swings and misses a wrong ball, it s a twostroke penalty. It doesn t matter whether or not you actually hit (or missed) the wrong ball. The stroke you made doesn t count, but you re still penalized two strokes under Rule 15-3b. 8 Desert Mashie Golf Club and Foundation Information Line: For some time the Club/Foundation has had an official PO Box and now it has an official phone number. The DM Information Line (IL) is a way for members and the public to communicate with the Board and Committees only. Callers can listen to recorded messages about up-coming Club events and other information. As examples, call the IL, 24-hours, a day to hear about: Monthly Tournaments Award Dinner Annual Tournament Membership Drive Special Contact numbers Officer Elections Club Championship WSGA events Special announcements General messages from Officers and Committees The IL is two-way. Callers can also leave information for Board and Committee members similar to the former Desert Mashie "Hotline" but it is more than just a way to let us know you will be attending a Tournament. Members or the public may have other questions or issues to make Board or Committees aware of such as: How do I join the Club? What is the website for the Club? Please have (board/committee member) call me I will attend the tournament at... How much does (item) cost? How do I buy Club hats and shirts? We want to make a donation to the Club. How do we do so? How do I get my child into the Junior Golf Program? The IL is also the Club s incoming-only FAX number. If you need to FAX something to Board or Committee members you may use the IL to do it. Current members have rosters, addresses, phone/fax numbers, and knowledge of other members including Board/Committee members to use. The IL does not replace any of these. Continue to use them. The IL is simply another option members have to get information from, and leave messages for, Board/Committee members while providing an entry point into our organizations for the public.

9 How the information line works: The Information Line can accept both voice messages and faxes! Call the Information Line. Listen to the recorded information. At the end of the recorded information you will be instructed on how to leave a message (by pressing "1") or how to send a FAX (by pressing the send button your FAX machine). Maybe you don't want to hear the recorded information and just want to leave a message or send a FAX immediately. To do so just press "0" at any time after the recorded information starts. You will be instructed on how to leave a message or a FAX. If available we will have your caller-id but you should always include the telephone# or address you wish to be contacted at in any message you send to us. You can also easily FAX to the Board/Committees by simply calling the IL from your FAX machine and pressing your send button. The system will detect a FAX call and react as a FAX machine in receive mode. What happens next: When you leave your message or FAX, volunteer Board members will receive an audio file of your message (.wav) or image file of your FAX (.tif). These digital computer files will be ed to volunteers computer s. Volunteers will be checking our for these files and will respond within hours by either addressing the issue directly or forwarding the files to the appropriate Board member or Committee person for resolution. We may answer your issue by phone and/or . The recorded information you hear will be updated as needed usually every 30 days or so near the beginning of the month. Summary Call the IL 24-hours a day to hear current DM event and other information. Interrupt the message by pressing 0 then follow the instructions to leave a message/question for, or send a FAX to, Board/Committee members only. Include your address or phone number in your message.
