November / December 2013 DESERT MASHIE NEWS 5 Iron org FROM THE PRESIDENT: Hello Fellow Mashies, Happy New Year to all. I hope you enjoyed the Holiday Season. My family and I were thankful as we celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, in this wonderful free country of ours, I realize some of you may have celebrated in other ways, or, perhaps, not at all, but I hope everyone enjoyed the Season, and am wishing you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Thanks to all who participated in the voting process in the 4 th Qtr. of last year, and a hearty thanks to all who voted for me. I am honored to serve as your president again for the next 2 years. Even though this was communicated to you in November, but since we have some new members since that time, below is a list of the Desert Mashie Officers for 2014 and NAME Leroy James Carolyn Suttles Eric Neal Shirley Shaw Norma James George Colebrook, Jr. Harold Fields Kaye France Pat Crawford Barbara Davis Hines Richard Hurley Gloria Shelton Cecil Mosley Carolyn Suttles DESERT MASHIE BOARD POSITION President Vice President Treasurer Recording Secretary Corresponding Secretary Financial Secretary Director of Junior Golf Sergeant-at-Arms Member-at-Large Member-at-Large Member-at-Large Member-at-Large Tournament Director Social Chair

Our first Member Appreciation picnic was held at Aguila Park, following our Turkey Shoot tournament on November 17, The weather was just right, and the event was catered by Famous Dave s. The consensus was that the food was outstanding and the picnic was a smashing success. It was nice to be able to sit around, visit with, and get to know our fellow members. Our membership is off to a fast start. We currently have 144 members, and still growing. Even though there are still some members who have not renewed yet, our current membership count is only 3 members less than we had on November 1, 2013, which was when we started accepting membership registrations for this year. To the members who have not renewed your membership yet, you can renew your membership by going into the website ( or by completing and mailing in the application which is the last page of this newsletter. Also, if you have not renewed your Desert Mashie membership yet, you need to do so right away so your GHIN can be reactivated. All of the GHIN s were deactivated at the end of last month, and are only reactivated when memberships are renewed. You don t want to play (or attempt to play) in a tournament, only to find out that you do not have an established GHIN of record. Once you renew your membership, your GHIN will be reactivated. George Colebrook put on another successful New Year s Eve Tournament on December 31, 2013, at Tuscany Falls Golf Course in Goodyear. Listed in this newsletter are the results of this tournament. Awards from the Club Championship Tournament were presented at the Awards Dinner which was held on New Year s Eve at Eagle s Nest Ballroom in Goodyear. Hats off to Carolyn Suttles, our Social Chair, for her fine work, excellent planning, and the outstanding job she did in organizing such a successful event. We are tentatively planning a couple of bus trips this year 1 in September to San Diego to play in Paramount GC s Annual, and 1 in October to Las Vegas to play in Valley View GC s Annual. More information on these trips as plans are more definite. Leroy H. James President

Many of us spent New Year s Eve by attending the Desert Mashie 66th Annual Awards Dinner/Dance where the Club Championship awards were presented to the winners. In addition to congratulating the winners, we had a wonderful dinner, and danced the evening away to the music of DJ Roosevelt Wright. There was a gift for each table, and George Colebrook treated us to an exciting rendition of the right/left game to determine the winner of the table gift. Also, many of the attendees were winners of raffle prizes which were very nicely packaged. We had a midnight toast with all the toots and whistles. Over 130 of us were in attendance and participated in this celebration; and, from the looks of it, everyone had a maaar-ve-lous time. Thanks to Carolyn Suttles for putting on such an elegant and memorable event.

OUR PIONEERS ARE HONORED William Dickey On Friday, November 8, Desert Mashie was in full force support as 24 Mashies represented our Club at the Arizona Association of Real Estate Brokers (AAREB) 2 nd Annual Dinner With Our Friends event during which they honored several of the Valley s Real Estate Pioneers. These were pioneers who had opened the doors for success in the African American community and in the Real Estate industry in Arizona. In addition to honoring the Real Estate forefathers, they also recognized other pioneers who had also been influential in the Valley. The honorees were: Dr. Lincoln Ragsdale Sr. Virgil Jackie Berry, Sr. William (Bill) Dickey Eleanor Ragsdale Dr. Lincoln Ragsdale, Sr. Marshal H. Shelton Travis Williams Desert Mashie was invited to attend because of Bill Dickey s legacy with the Desert Mashie Golf Club. Eleanor Ragsdale Leonard & Juanita Walker and Maurice & Rose Cotton who, as many of you know, had many years of history with Bill Dickey. Well, they also have personal knowledge of many of the business ventures, the involvement and good deeds of several of these honorees. It was such a rewarding experience to be able to attend this magnificent event and hear about the efforts and successes of these pioneers who helped pave the way for so many of us. Recognition plaques were presented to family members of the honorees. Mrs. Cynthia Smitherman, who is a new Desert Mashie member, is the President of the Arizona Association of Real Estate Brokers who put on this wonderful event. Virgil Jackie Berry Sr.

Pat Crawford Women In Golf Coordinator WOMEN IN GOLF Meet Our Golfer Of The Week! In case you missed the story on our very own Jo Jo Bridgewaters-Edmonds as she was featured on the cover of African American Golfers Digest, here is the complete article. (November 18, 2013)--Jo Ann (JoJo) Bridgewaters-Edmonds has fond memories of Salt Lake City, Utah (her birth place). From there she moved to Aurora, Colorado pursuing her career with the telephone company. However, it was her love for golf and the desire to play year-round that prompted her to relocate to Arizona upon her retirement. "My parents, Dorothy and James Lamb, got me started playing golf, she says, now working on a 27 handicap. She flourishes in her community as a member of several golf clubs with one of which includes over a decade of involvement. I started with Mile Hi (Denver, CO), and now currently Desert Mashie (both of which are members of Western States Golf Association), Players Golf Club, and Cactus Golf Club in Phoenix, AZ, says Bridgewaters-Edmonds. JoJo attended Regis University in Denver, CO where she earned a Bachelor s Degree in Computer Information Systems. Her analytical mindset is perfect for on-course strategies and she uses it to the max. In May of this year, she married the love of her life, her significant other, Scott Edmonds (photo below). "He's a great golfer and we share a passion for the game," she admits. For her regular weekly rounds, JoJo likes to pair up with her close friends, Bea Baker and Cheryl Marshall. Both players present a great challenge on the course and help to keep her game on track. My current home course is Encanto Golf Course, says JoJo. The course, built in 1935, is located in the core of the city s Historic District. Designed by William P. Bell, Encanto is the third oldest golf course in Arizona and ideally suited for play by the average golfer. Here, JoJo is able to enjoy a spectacular view of downtown Phoenix while playing on wide, level fairways with a limited number of hazards. The courses driving range and putting green have helped her to better her game in these specific areas.

JoJo has benefited from experts in her field and has received instruction and training from Joe Egnoski and Steve Thomas at Green Valley Golf in Denver. This, combined with her strong determination and game focus, has gained her these notable wins: 2nd low net "A" flight at the Valley View Golf Club (Las Vegas, NV) Oct 22-23, 2011, Tigress of the Week Low Net Player Golf Club, Oct 16, 2011, 1st Low Gross WSGA Women in Golf North/South Shootout, Sept 24-25, 2011; and Desert Mashie Club Championship, 2nd low Net "C" Flight, Sept., The golf training I received helped me to build confidence, hit straighter shots, and improved my overall golfing skills. My ultimate goal is to lower my handicap. Not needing anything more than warm weather to motivate her to play, JoJo loves being out on the green. However, when she s not there, she favors bowling. As a retiree, golf has captivated her life and she exclaims, I find it relaxing and challenging, and I am particularly fond of the 19th hole. JO JO

GOLF TIP OF THE DAY The Lefts of Chipping (Unless you re a Lefty) Chipping it close makes a round of golf more enjoyable and takes some stress off your putter. Learn the "Lefts of Chipping" to improve your short, low shots around the green. Feet Left: Open your stance slightly. Weight Left: Lean towards your target. Club Left: Point the butt end of the club left of your body. Left-handed players would do the oppositefeet right, weight right, club right. Make a pendulum stroke, with a middle iron, using your arms and shoulders without using your wrists. With this setup, the ball will hop over the fringe and roll out to the hole. Golf Tip of the Day by Sara Bush

The duffer muffed his tee shot into the woods, then hit into a few trees, then proceeded to hit across the fairway into some other woods. Finally, after banging away several more times, he proceeded to hit into a sand trap. All the while, he d noticed that the club pro had been watching. What club should I use now? he asked the pro. I don t know, the pro replied. What game are you playing? A young minister and an elderly parishoner were playing golf. The minister's game was off and the old man was beating him badly. At the end of the game, the old man tried to console his minister by saying, "don't worry, Reverend. One of these days you'll be burying me." Yes," said the minister, "but even then, it will be your hole!" A foursome approached the sixteenth tee. The straight fairway ran along a road and bike path fenced off on the left. The first golfer teed of and hooked the ball into that direction. But the ball went over the fence and bounced off the bike path onto the road, where it hit the tire of a moving bus and was knocked back onto the fairway. As they all stood in silent amazement, one man finally asked him, How on earth did you do that? He shrugged his shoulders and said, You have to know the bus schedule.

HEARD A GOOD ONE. A couple went golfing one day at a very exclusive course lined with million dollar homes. On the third tee, the husband cautioned, "Honey, be careful when you drive. If we break one of those windows it'll cost us a fortune to repair". Of course, she tee'd off and promptly shanked it right through the window of the biggest house on the course. The husband cringed, "I warned you to watch out! Now we'll have to go up there and apologize and see how much that lousy drive is going to cost us." They walked up, knocked on the door, and a warm voice said, "Come on in." When they opened the door they saw glass all over the place and a broken antique bottle lying on its side near the broken window. A man reclining on the couch asked, "Are you the people that broke the window?" "Uh yeah, we're sure sorry about that" the husband replied. "Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you. You see, I'm a genie, and I've been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you've released me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you each one wish, and I'll keep the last one for myself." "Wow, that's great!" the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out, "I'd like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life." "No problem," said the genie, "You've got it, it's the least I can do." "And now you, young lady, what do you want?" the genie asked. "I'd like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world" she said. "Consider it done," the genie said.

"And now," the couple both asked in unison, "What's your wish, genie?" "Well, since I've been trapped in that bottle and haven't been with a woman in a thousand years, my wish is to have sex with your wife." The husband looked at his wife and said, "Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?" She mulled it over for a few moments and said, "You know, you're right. Considering all that, I guess I wouldn't mind." The genie and the woman went upstairs where he ravished her for the rest of the afternoon. Both satisfied each other repeatedly, and afterwards, the genie rolled over and looked at the wife and asked, "How old are you and your husband?" "Why, we're both 35" she responded breathlessly. "No shit! Thirty-five years old and both you idiots still believe in genies?

If you re wondering why I continue to run this, it s because this is the most important of all articles that I submit to you in each Newsletter. If you don t keep hydrated, you will NOT have a good experience on the golf course in this Arizona weather. So remember We are in the desert don t forget. Hydration on the Course Stay hydrated is a common phrase you often hear from playing sports and on the golf course. Optimal hydration can improve your golf game mentally and physically. Since the brain is made up of 85% of water and is water inefficient, it has top priority in regards to blood circulation. Drinking the correct amount of water will ensure optimal blood flow to the brain which will enable you to focus on the golf course. The human body is composed of 25% solid matter (solute) and 75% water (solvent). For instance, the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is composed mostly of water. The majority of the weight of the upper body is supported by this water volume in the disc; therefore proper hydration can be a preventative measure against low back pain. Water also acts as a lubricating agent for joints which can relieve pain from chronic joint pathologies. Now that you know the importance of proper hydration, the amount of water consumed per day is critical to reach this goal. Some people say drink lots of water. But what is a lot of water? Other say drink 8 glasses of water per day. This is not an accurate way to determine the amount of water to drink each day. For example if a female golfer weighs 100 pounds. 8 glasses of water may cause over hydration. On the other hand if a male golfer weighs 200 pounds, 8 glasses of water falls far below the correct amount of water. The optimal amount of water to drink is ½ your body weight (pounds) in ounces per day. For example, a 200 lb. person will need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. A key point to remember is that other fluids do not count toward your goal of ½ your bodyweight in ounces. Those fluids include: coffee, tea, juices, soda, milk, sports drinks, and flavored water. In fact, other fluids like sports drinks and juices can actually dehydrate the body because it takes water to actually dilute these high sugar drinks before it is assimilated in the body.

Timing of water consumption is important to optimal hydration. Drinking water first thing in the morning is critical because during sleep the body becomes dehydrated. Therefore drinking water first thing in the morning is the first step to optimal hydration. Start with 25% of your total water intake in the morning. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume 25 ounces in the morning. During a golf round you should consume 40% - 50% of your total daily intake of water. If your water intake for the day is 100 ounces, you would consume ounces of water on the golf course. The remaining water should be consumed throughout the day. The type of water you drink is important to achieving optimal hydration. 80% of bottled waters are filtered tap waters. Choose a bottled water that has approximately parts per million (mg/l) of dissolved solids. This ensures a proper amount of dissolved solids in the water to maintain proper hydration. High quality water sources include Evian, Fiji, and Trinity. Water from Reverse Osmosis units can be used but the dissolved solids can be quite low. A great way to remedy this situation is to add a small pinch of Celtic Sea Salt to every liter of water. Celtic Sea Salt is an organic, unrefined sea salt that has over 80 trace minerals that will help replenish the body with electrolytes. Not only does it replenish the electrolytes in the body, it is a great way to prevent muscle cramps. Another great benefit of using Celtic Sea Salt is the reduction of allergic tendencies. I have had great results with golfers that have allergic symptoms due to pollen and grass. Many have reported reduced symptoms of allergic reactions with the proper amount of water and the addition of Celtic Sea Salt. Please do not consume regular salt in the place of Celtic Sea Salt. Regular salt is just sodium chloride which can be quite toxic when consumed on its own without the other trace minerals. Drinking the proper amount and correct type of water may be the missing link to improving your golf game mentally and physically. So, here s drinking to your golf game and health.
