2 Club News John J. Feole, Club Manager Dear Kings Creek Members, Three weeks until spring! The weather has been mild and we ve enjoyed several great weekends of pretty full tee sheets. Soon the season will be upon us. I know many of you are anxious to begin another season of golf. There s been a buzz in the air and we continue to hear a great deal of positive feedback from the membership regarding our club events. Thank you for your support and comments for the variety of events, the quality of food, service provided by the staff, and how thrilled you have been that we ve maintained a very active calendar during the winter months. Membership support of nearly all of our special events has been outstanding for this time of the year! March is sure to be a fun month! We are looking forward to Fresh Fish Fridays, St. Patrick s Day specials for three days, and Wednesday night specials. Music Bingo on the 29 th is sure to be a blast, as DJ Tim will feature bingo cards with a variety of musical genres. Feel free to sing along and dance to the tunes while you re playing bingo. Come on in early and have one of Chef Phil s delicious burgers. We will also feature a Kid s Movie Night on March 10 th in the casual dining room. Yes, we will continue to schedule the ever-popular Prime Rib and Steak Nights monthly, and we ll finish the month with Fisherman s Catch. Another full month of awesome dinners and activities! One important note regarding the dress policy and denim (jeans) in the clubhouse. The Board of Directors has approved a change and has relaxed the dress policy allowing denim in all dining rooms on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Happy Hour nights are so popular we are filling the other dining rooms with members and guests. All other nights, denim is acceptable in the Eagles Nest only. Since the launch of the membership promotions in February, we ve been extremely busy sending out membership information and providing tours of the club, which has resulted in several new memberships. Great results for the month of February! Thank you to all that have sponsored new members. These promotions are crucial to the future and success of Kings Creek Country Club. Again, there is no limit to the number of new members you can sponsor with your voucher form, and you will receive a credit for each on your monthly statement. We also have a new junior membership program for juniors up to the age of 40. You will find the new junior membership information and voucher promotion forms in our weekly blast, in the lobby of the clubhouse, or please me at jfeole@kingscreekcountyclub.com and I ll forward one to you and the prospective new member. Your feedback is very important to me. Please feel free to stop in and share your club experience with me. You will always find my door open. See you at the Club! John Welcome New Members Stephen and Susan Spence Chris and Lori Schell John and Kortney Andrews Dick and Joan Repetto David and Lesley Corydon Jim and Jeannie Miller Michael and Maria McGuiness Page 2

3 Food and Beverage John Drumheller, Food and Beverage Manager " It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade. " - Charles Dickens Of late, it has seemed as though the shade has revealed teases of summer as well as the light. Having a 70 degree temperature on February 25 th for the Kid s Indoor Winter Carnival certainly surprised me! But the kids enjoyed it, we propped the doors open, had great fun and games inside, and put the bounce house outside for the kids to bounce, romp, play and thoroughly enjoy themselves. A special thank you goes to our Server Chrissy for her extraordinary effort and creativity in making this a terrific time for the kids. This event was just one of several in February that helped fill the Club with a great energy as Members took advantage of new opportunities to use the Club. We had a wonderful Valentine s celebration with dinner specials and a sold out Saturday night of dining with wonderful live music from Aimee Gusky. We had an Asian night and another Taco and Fajita night and both were both big hits. We had a Spirits Tasting of High West Whiskey and Bourbon that was also a big success. I hope that Members will continue to be as supportive as they have been all winter long, in turning out for the events we have planned for March and throughout the Spring. Thank you to one and all! We can plan and promote till we re blue in the face, but it still takes the enthusiasm and participation of the Membership to make everything go! Speaking of events in March, on 4 of the 5 Fridays in March, Chef will be featuring Fresh Fish Fridays. He will be doing specials on each of those Fridays featuring, you got it, fresh fish with various preparations to enjoy. I know that Chef is known for his steaks, but I guarantee you that the fish that comes out of our kitchen is every bit as good! On Friday the 10 th of March, we will feature a Kid s Movie Night. It will begin with a kid friendly buffet and be followed by a kid friendly movie in the casual dining room. Kids can bring a comforter or sleeping bag and a pillow to get comfortable on the floor and enjoy the show. We will have popcorn and candy, and like all of our recent kids events, a good time! Another new event scheduled in March is Bridge and Board Game Day. We had a Recreational Bridge Day in January that was very well received, so we re bringing it back in March with a slight modification. The idea is simple: Get a couple of Bridge groups, or in Mrs. Pearce s case, 5 groups, (Thank you Mrs. Pearce: it s wonderful to know I can always count on your support!), and come to the Club and enjoy some recreational Bridge with friends. However, in March we re also inviting anyone who wants to bring his/her favorite board game, and a friend or two or three, and come to the Club and enjoy playing that game. In fact, I ll issue a challenge: anyone who brings a chess board and can beat me, I will personally buy your lunch! So come on out on the 18 th, play your favorite game(s), and enjoy a delicious lunch. Speaking of deliciousness, Chef will again be running St. Patrick s Specials on the 16 th, 17 th, and 18 th of March. And if I m not mistaken, he may know something about Irish specials. Yes, Winnie Sewell and Helene Guilfoy, I have Guinness in cans AND on tap. One of the last new events I want to highlight in March is Music Bingo on Wednesday, March 29 th. We are having a regular Wednesday night Burger Night, but, from 7:00-9:00 we are having Music Bingo. There will be a DJ playing songs, and the bingo card is filled with song titles rather than letters and numbers, and you mark your card accordingly. There are sample cards on the promo tents on the tables in both dining rooms and the Eagles Nest. I ve seen a video of this at another venue and the people were having a blast! I know a few people are already on board and I would love to see a whole bunch more come out and make it a great event. In addition to the new and special events in March, we are also having both a Steak Night and a Prime Rib Night on the 11 th and 25 th respectively. If you can t find a reason to come to Kings Creek in March, or multiple reasons for that matter, you ain t tryin! Cheers! John D. P.S. Just a heads up for planning purposes: Saturday April 1 st will feature a Kids Cooking Class in the morning and a NCAA Final Four Party that night! Page 3

Congratulations to Chris Krueger for being named the Golf Coach for Cape Henlopen golf team Chris Krueger has been named the Head Golf Coach for the Cape Henlopen golf team for the 2017 season. George Bushby, Assistant Golf Professional at Rehoboth Beach Country Club and Samantha Purple, School Teacher at Cape Henlopen, will be his Assistant Coaches. Rehoboth Beach Country Club is the team s home course but Kings Creek has always allowed the team to come over and practice occasionally or host a match at our course if there are conflicts on their schedule with course availability. This will have little impact to Chris schedule at Kings Creek as practices and matches are at 3:30 pm in March and April. Brendan and I are available for those looking for that late afternoon lesson in the early spring. Please take a moment to stop by and congratulate Chris on this accomplishment! Spring Mailing Please be on the lookout for our spring mailing which will include a Member Privileges sheet. This sheet lets us know the following: if anyone in the membership is in need of a bag tag, handicap, bag storage, a locker, would like to join the Hole-In-One club, sign up for the VIP program in the golf shop which allows you to purchase anything in the golf shop or Page 6

7 Ball marks - also called pitch marks - are the bane of smooth-putting and healthy greens on golf courses. They're the little depressions, or craters, sometimes made when a golf ball lands on the putting surface. Repairing those little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way. Because while many golfers fail to repair ball marks, there are also many well-meaning golfers who do "repair" the pitch marks, incorrectly. A ball mark can cause the grass in the depression to die, leaving not just a scar but also a pit in the putting surface that can knock well-struck putts offline. Repairing a ball mark restores a smooth surface and helps keep the grass healthy. Repairing a ball mark incorrectly, however, can actually cause more damage than not attempting to repair it at all. A fresh ball mark repaired by a player takes only FIVE SECONDS. A freshly repaired ball mark will completely heal in TWENTY FOUR HOURS. A fresh ball mark left unrepaired for only one hour requires FIFTEEN DAYS TIME before the ugly scar has satisfactorily healed. PLEASE REPAIR ALL BALL MARKS. Here is our recommended way of repairing ball marks. Club Fitting We have started receiving a lot of our fitting and demo clubs. If you have never been custom fit before, I want to let you know that we have a state of the art launch monitor that we use for fitting you to the right equipment to match your game. As you can see in the picture, this launch monitor tracks your actual ball flight. It gives us your carry distance, total distance, and ball spin. It gives us many different numbers to help decide which is the right equipment for you. It is also a great tool in determining how far you are hitting your clubs. Stop guessing how far you might be hitting your clubs and actually find out! This is a tool that Chris, Brendan, and I will be using in our teaching as well as the Club Fitting. We are going to be scheduling fit days where you can sign up and try all of the new equipment or just test yours. You can also just give us a call to schedule a time to be tested. Page 8

11 Superintendent s Report Mark Haschemeyer, Golf Course Superintendent With all the unseasonably warm weather recently we ve gotten to enjoy a fair amount of winter golf. Here s a great article that explains some of the unusual visual characteristics of winter putting greens. Why Do I Have Blueish-Purple Greens? Pete H. Dernoedon, Ph.D. Frosty nights in late autumn bring about pronounced physiological changes in plants. In creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass, especially on golf greens, leaves may develop a purple, reddish or grayish-blue (wilt-like appearance) color. These colors persist all winter and into early spring. The discoloration may be uniform in some cultivars (especially Crenshaw), but frequently the various shades of purple, red or blue-gray appear in circular patches. These patches constitute different clones (genetic variants) within the bentgrass polystand. In annual bluegrass on greens during winter, some perennial biotypes can develop a purple color, while the annual types remain green. As individual plants grow, the more aggressive biotypes dominate in a natural selection process to produce circular patches (i.e., segregated clones). These patches are not unlike the circular areas of discolored turf associated with some diseases. The purplish-blue discoloration can be misdiagnosed as red leaf spot disease. If discoloration is due to frost, the underside of leaves will retain their green color. The purpling and blue-gray color from frosts is especially prominent in Penncross greens, but similar color changes appear in older stands of most other bentgrass cultivars. As previously noted, a similar purpling can occur in perennial biotypes of annual bluegrass. Segregated clones also can turn red or purplish when treated with plant growth regulators like Cutless (fluprimidol) and Trimmit (paclobutrazol) during autumn and spring when applications coincide with frost. Trimmit can cause severe damage to areas sodded with bentgrass up to two years after installation. Cold temperatures trigger the red, blue and purple color responses. When nights are cold and frosty, sugars are not completely translocated out of leaves and accumulate. There are several types of sugars (especially glucose), which chemically bind with anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are pigments and their function in plants is unclear. The word "anthocyanin" is from Greek: anthos = "flower and kyanos = "darkblue". Anthocyanins provide the red, purple and blue colors in flowers. They also are expressed in the foliage of trees during cool to cold and bright weather to provide the spectacular colors in autumn leaves. Anthocyanins always are present in leaves, but normally are masked by chlorophyll. Creeping bentgrass and perennial biotypes of annual bluegrass experience a similar accumulation of anthocyanins during cold weather. Frost denatures the green chlorophyll, thereby exposing the anthocyanin pigment. These colors may intensify and persist throughout winter months and slowly disappear in mid-spring after turf begins active growth. Spoon-feeding during mild periods in early spring will speed growth and green-up. Page 11
