The Champions Challenge is a culminating skills event comprised of approximately 300 fourth graders from area school districts.

1 The First Tee National School Program Champions Challenge Presented by Children s Memorial Hermann SUMMARY The Houston Golf Association hosts The First Tee National School Program Champions Challenge on the Saturday prior to the Shell Houston Open on The First Tee of Greater Houston s 3-hole, par 3 course located adjacent to Redstone Golf Club. The Champions Challenge is a culminating skills event comprised of approximately 300 fourth graders from area school districts. Two students from each participating elementary school earn a spot to compete in this fun-filled competition based on their performance in National School Program activities held during their physical education classes. The event provides an opportunity for participants to transition and apply their putting, chipping, driving, and etiquette skills on a real golf course as well as attend a PGA TOUR event. EVENT FACTS Participants are divided into 18 teams. Each team is comprised of students from six different schools. Teams are named after players competing in the tournament (i.e. Team Kim). Teams rotate to 9 different stations. SNAG equipment and 6 holes are used. Awards are given to the top three boys and girls as well as the first and second place teams. Award recipients are also recognized during the tournament s Junior Golf Day on Tuesday of tournament week. All participants receive a shirt, hat, bag tag, two tickets to the tournament, and lunch. Over 250 volunteers are needed to help with set-up, registration, team captains, scoring, hole officials, standard bearers, parking, food and beverage, and safety. The National School Program curriculum is based on nationwide physical education standards and emphasizes character building through an introduction to golf and The First Tee Nine Core Values and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits. Through its fundraising efforts, Houston Golf Association has helped provide equipment, curriculum and physical educator training in 180+ elementary schools. More than 90,000 students participate in The First Tee National School Program during the school year in the Greater Houston community.

Volunteer Requirements Each participating school must provide 2 volunteers o 1 campus teacher to escort students from station to station o 1 volunteer to be randomly assigned to a volunteer activity (*see below) o Volunteers MUST register online by March 4 th. aquillen@hga.org for link. *Volunteer Activity Descriptions Set-Up Assist in setting up hole activities, signage, registration materials, etc Registration Welcome and greet volunteers & campus teachers. Distribute materials and inform campus teachers and volunteers where to go upon arrival. Campus Teacher Accompany students from one school as they rotate to and from each hole providing positive feedback and help keep track of participants scores during each hole. Scoring Accompany a team of participants and keep score for each youth participant. They will report scores to standard bearers to post team s total after each hole. They are also responsible for adding and attesting all scores of a team. Hole Officials Introduce holes to participants and help with scoring, retrieving balls, marking & measuring. Two hole officials will be assigned to every hole. Standard Bearers - Accompany a team and carry a sign indicating the team s score. They will work closely with a scoring volunteer.

WAIVERS The First Tee/HGA Model Release form AND a copy of the school s photo release permission form for each youth participant MUST be signed and turned in by March 4 th. ATTIRE Youth participants, teachers, and volunteers need to wear: o *The First Tee of Greater Houston collared shirt o Khaki or navy pants/knee-length shorts o White socks & tennis shoes o Denim is prohibited. Youth participants may not wear jewelry. *Teachers and volunteers will receive a t-shirt Teachers are responsible for ensuring youth participants arrive wearing a name tag on the BACK of their shirt on the left-shoulder. LUNCH Lunch will be provided for youth participants, teachers, and volunteers. A concession stand (cash only) will be available for parents/guardians and guests. Lunch boxes, coolers and folding chairs are allowed. Alcohol prohibited. Water coolers will be on the course at all times for youth participants.

Each team will be named after a professional competing in the 2013 Shell Houston Open (i.e. Team Kim). The 18 teams will be divided onto two courses Orange Course & Blue Course. Teams will rotate through 9 different stations that test their putting, chipping, driving, agility, and cognitive skills on their designated course. SNAG golf equipment will be used. The stations will be set up on an outdoor, green-grass, 3-hole, par 3 golf course. The lowest score wins both the team and individual competitions. The team total will be based on the 3 lowest and the 3 highest total scores per team. PRIZES/AWARDS All youth participants will receive a hat, bag tag, and two Saturday, March 30 tickets to the 2013 Shell Houston Open. Children 13 years of age or younger may attend the Shell Houston Open for free so the coupons are primarily for other family members. Ribbons will be given to the top three male and female participants as well as the first and second place teams on each course. These individuals will be recognized on Tuesday, March 26 during the Shell Houston Open Junior Golf Day. TIE-BREAKING The 9 stations on each course will be ranked from most to least difficult. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined based on the lowest score for the most difficult station. If the participants/teams have the same score on the most difficult station, then the winner will be determined based on the lowest score for the 2 nd most difficult station, etc This will continue until a winner is determined. Players will chip and putt with one ball until their shot sticks to the Flagsticky. Player takes no more than five shots.
