3 3 Hilton Head Island Relaxed Braver wins Heritage Junior in playoff Sam Braver flashed the same sheepish smile all day for one reason: He never thought he could win. I was just hoping to get in the top three, he said. Surprise. Hoft s precision leads to 3-shot win at Oldfield No daring bunker shots or gutsy putts were needed. J.D. Hoft s steady dosage of fairways and greens worked just fine. Playing nearly every hole to perfection with his driver and irons, Hoft avoided mistakes and cruised to a three-stroke win over Robbie Stilwell and Chandler Vilcheck at the 25th Hilton Head Amateur on Sunday at Oldfield Golf Club. The 17-year-old capped a torrid finish by birdieing the first playoff hole producing his biggest grin yet and topped Austin Cody with a final-round 5 under to win the American Junior Golf Association s Heritage Junior Championship on Friday at Hampton Hall Club. He finished at 8-under 208 and was joined atop the leaderboard by Rebecca Durham, whose 2-under round propelled her past a struggling girls field on the final day for a four-shot victory at 1 under overall. Hoft shot 3 under on his final round for a two-day 5-under 139, the only player under par both days. On Sunday, he kept bogey off his scorecard and collected all three birdies on par-5s, forcing challengers to produce a sub-60s score that never materialized. He played mistake-free golf, Vilcheck said. It s fun to watch. The stout 26-year-old won his first Amateur title in three tries in steady, borderline boring fashion. Hitting driver on every par-4 and par-5, Hoft hit 13 of 14 fairways in regulation. He stayed nearly as true with his approach shots, hitting 16 of 18 greens. It was a really low stress kind of round, said Hoft. I didn t stuff it every hole, but I was in birdie range on pretty much all of the holes. Hoft missed his fair share of those makeable birdies, including an 18-incher on No. 12 that lipped out and a 3- foot putt on No. 8, but he ignored those failures and capitalized on the par-5s. He drove the green in two and two-putted on Nos. 5 and 12 and sank an 8-foot putt on the 18th to capture the championship, one that came with little surprise. The New Home of David Ayers & Lowcountry Custom Golf fitting studio Certificate of Value Many in the final groups pegged Hoft, who started the day tied for first with Vilcheck and Dave Hambly, as the guy to chase. I had a lot of buddies here saying I m going to come get (you), said Hoft. No one did, and few even came close. Mt Pleasant 1602 Hwy 17 N

The teams engage in one round of four-ball matches and a round of singles matches. One point is at stake in each match. The point is split if the match is halved. 6 6 Myrtle Beach Suggested Local Rules for Your Club The Carolinas Golf Association urges all clubs to write and publish a list of local rules under the title Notice to Competitors. This allows members and guests at your club to observe better the USGA Rules of Golf. Local rules are covered thoroughly in the USGA Decisions on the Rules of Golf. Several questions about local rules are answered in decisions under Section These decisions are listed on pages 434 through 447 of the USGA Decisions book. It is important to note that a committee or club cannot waive a Rule of Golf, such as a rule allowing competitors to use more than 14 clubs. A local rule must not violate the Rules of Golf. Many of the decisions listed under Section 33-8 describe situations that cannot be considered a local rule. There are many local rules a committee or club cannot write. Many are popular but not allowed by the Rules of Golf: * Waiving the requirement to hole out in a stroke play or medal play event. * Creating a ball drop on the green side of a water hazard for a ball that fails to clear the hazard. * Agreeing to discontinue play because of rain. * Invoking a tree root rule. * Waiving the rule that penalized a player for a ball putted from the putting green that strikes the flagstick. * Stating that free relief is granted from bushes or trees that define yardage. * Defining part of a boundary (out of bounds) fence as an obstruction. * Allowing a player to drop a ball on the green side of a regular water hazard without crossing it with a stroke, no matter how many penalty strokes are applied. Some important valid local rules are suggested below. You should include as many of these as practical in your Notice to Competitors. The CGA suggests you post your Notice in locker rooms, golf shop and/or first tee. Local rules your club really should adopt Embedded ball: Through the Green If you don t adopt this rule, you cannot take embedded ball relief in the rough. Relief for an embedded ball is through the green. The procedure is described on page 98 of the Rules of Golf. Out of boundsitems used to define out of bounds (fences, stakes, roads, white lines, etc.) should be listed on your club s local rules sheet. Be specific. Water hazardswater hazards at your club should be defined. For CGA events, we describe the difference between identifying (the existence of a) water hazard and defining a water hazard: Regular water hazards are identified by yellow stakes and defined by yellow lines. Lateral water hazards are identified by red stakes and defined by red lines. Because the CGA uses stakes only to identify hazards, they do not have to be located on the lines or inside the margin of the hazard.

8 8 Florence Amateur Championship Heads to the Country Club of South Carolina Florence, S.C. Designed by Ellis Maples and opened in 1969, the Country Club of South Carolina has hosted its share of championships. Most recently the 2006 Junior Championship, Four Ball Championship in 2004 and the 2003 US Amateur Qualifier have been contended there. Now, CCSC is the stage and host course for the 76 th Annual South Carolina Golf Association s Men s Amateur Championship. The dates are August 2-5 and will be played over the par 72 course that will measure 7,085 yards for the 2007 Championship. The Country Club of South Carolina, set in the Pee Dee region of the state, provides a great challenge for the field of 137 amateurs. Dogwoods, azaleas and old oak trees line the course and protect the TiffEagle greens. The scenic lakes, Black Creek and 103 bunkers would test any golfer, but even more so during the Amateur Championship. Thirty five of those bunkers have been refurbished since early If players feel they need a little extra practice, a newly constructed, state-ofthe-art practice facility was installed just three years ago. Jeffrey Goff won the 2006 event, contested at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, SC. The Jackson native shot a three-under par four day score of 277. Goff received a scholarship to play at USC Aiken and will be returning to defend his title as State Amateur Champion. Some other past champions playing in this year s tournament include Bert Atkinson, Frank Ford III, Bubba Hightower and Gus Sylvan. The Country Club of S.C. should prove to have as much excitement as recent years with all of these great competitors and more in the field. This year s field is highlighted by many players. As in recent years, the youth movement is making its presence felt. Of the 137-player field, 70 of participants are either 22 years of age or younger. Current SCGA Junior Champion and three time USGA Junior Amateur Qualifier Wesley Bryan is currently playing some great golf. Southeastern Amateur Champion, and the elder Bryan brother, George, IV is also a threat. Other hot players coming into the 2007 Amateur are Patrick Rada who is the SCGA Four Ball and CGA SC Match Play Champion, Phillip Mollica who just won the North-South Match Play Championship and Festival of Flowers Champion, Steve Liebler. Jordan Byrd, Clemson University s assistant golf coach will be in attendance after a runner-up finish in the 2006 SCGA State Amateur. Family representation is another interesting aspect of this year s State Amateur Championship. Other duos that add to the Bryan brother pair include, Jonathan and Daniel Bowden of Easley, David and Robert Dargan of Blythewood, Cheraw s Baker and McCuen Elmore, Greenwood s Ben and Matt Martin and the Rody brothers of Tyler and Ryan from Spartanburg. The Todd family is represented by Walter Todd, son Walt Todd and nephew Thomas Todd, III. Chase Liebler, son of Steve and the other half of the Father Son winning team will participate. Finally the Glaze family is represented by Gettys Glaze, brother Lee and nephew Scott who plays for the College of Charleston. Four qualifying events were held at various courses around the state during July. The first was held at Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff on July 10. Todd Hendley earned medalist honors after shooting a solid four under par 68. The second of four qualifiers took place at the Northwoods Golf Course on July 13. On a very hot summer day, Bamberg s Allen Koon, who also plays for the University of South Carolina, shot a three under par 69 to claim the victory. On July 16, Coosaw Creek Country Club held the third qualifier as we witnessed last year s Junior Champion, Jacob Burger, shoot a 67 to obtain the medalist title. And finally, Sunset Country Club in Sumter hosted the fourth and final of the qualifiers on July 18, where Michael Sims shot a qualifying best six under par 64 to sweep the field and take home the last medalist position. The Amateur Championship is one of 18 SCGA statewide championships, 76 one-day contests, nine USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and five special events conducted by the SCGA. Results, schedules and applications may be accessed via the Internet at Steve

Jackie and Brent Parrish Wins 41st Carolinas Father-Son in Playoff Foxfire Village, NC - Jackie and Brent Parrish birdied the first playoff hole to win the Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Foxfire Resort. The Parrish team tied three other duos with a three-under par 69 before completing the playoff win. The format is contested using a modified alternate shot format in which both players hit tee shots, select a ball, and then complete the hole with alternating shots. The elder Parrish, Jackie, hold a 5-foot birdie putt on the first hole after son Brent threw a wedge to five feet.the Parrish s playoff birdie nipped the three other teams of Walker and Jackson Taylor of Wilmington, NC; Troy and Tyler Payne of Mt. Airy, NC; and Walter and Walt Todd of Laurens, SC. I have been playing with either of my sons, Jack or Brent, in this event for at least the last 15 years, said father Jackie, a former school principal. It s really nice to win this finally. Son Brent is the reigning Keith Hills Amateur champion. The Carolinas Father-Son is a 41 yearold event played over five Pinehurstarea golf courses fielding over 600 golfers. This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association. The pristine setting at Sage Valley Golf Club witnessed some of the countries top junior golfers battling it out on the links. South Carolina team members Brad Sill and Corbin Mills followed up their victories Thursday by winning over Colin Ho and Ollie Schniederjans Friday extending the lead of the host team by four points. Georgia s juniors closed the gap within a point after Chase Parker, Harris English and Taylor Floyd all defeated Stephen Behr, Martin Summer and Logan Daver. With the win, South Carolina inched closer in the overall standings, narrowing Georgia s lead to 20 wins to 12 for South Carolina. This is the first victory for the S.C. juniors since Thirty-two years ago, Pete Cox of the Georgia State Golf Association and Charles Rountree, Jr. of the South Carolina Golf Association formalized the idea of the GA - SC team matches. The winning team has their victory inscribed on the beautiful Rountree - Cox trophy that was donated by the Rountree family. Every junior that has participated in the 31 year old competition, will find his name on the trophy with his teammates. Ernst, from Seneca, defeated Cayci Ruppe of Gafney 4&3 to capture the SC Girls Match Play Championship at Furman University Golf Club. Ernst is the third member of her family to win this annual junior championship. Her father, Mark won the boys championship in 1981 and her older brother Drew won the boys championship in Ernst, a 15 year old high school sophomore displayed her ball striking ability winning her first Carolinas Golf Association championship. Ruppe, a 17 year old high school senior, played tough and determined golf, but in the end Ernst s consistency was just too much to over come. In the championship match, Reeves displayed John Daly like length in reaching each of the par fives in two stokes. Reeves won the tenth and eleventh holes to take a 3 up lead, but Gray battled back to by winning the fourteenth and fifteenth holes to get back to within one hole of Reeves. On the par 3 sixteenth, Reeves knocked his tee shot to within 2 feet of the whole to take a 2 up lead and then halved the seventeenth hole to win is first CGA title.
