2 Upcoming Golf Events The summer has almost left us and I for one am not ready to start worrying about the cold. I do love this State and the great weather that we have year round. The year so far has been a great one although it has been hot in the Month of August and maybe just a little to hot for the good of the many golf courses and also for us the humans. All in all I still like the heat and would rather try to get cool than to get warm. Play well and enjoy what we have and thank a Vet for the good life. 3 3 Hilton Head Island Rachel Uremovich on the Move Hilton Head SC - The smile on Rachel Uremovich s face stretched from ear to ear as she told her Hilton Head Island High School teammates about the recruiting letters that are starting to fill her mailbox one from the University of North Carolina arrived Saturday, followed Tuesday by correspondence from Notre Dame, UCLA, South Carolina and Texas. If she keeps playing like this, Uremovich might have to take out a post office box. The Hilton Head High junior fired a 1-under-par 35 on the Devil s Elbow South Course at Moss Creek on Tuesday, finishing nine shots ahead of the next-best score and leading the Seahawks to a 175 total and a victory over their county rivals from Bluffton and Beaufort high schools. The Seahawks were 11 shots better in beating the same two teams a week ago at Dataw Island, but their margin of victory was bigger Tuesday. Hilton Head High finished 16 shots ahead of Bluffton a week after beating the Bobcats by 14 shots in both teams opener.the Bobcats struggled from top to bottom Tuesday, with Heather Wiquist leading the way with a 44 and Kendra Collins shooting 45. Coach Jim Corbin hopes to see his team work out some of its problems this week in practice. I m still at a loss with this team, because they re so much better than what they re shooting, Corbin said. The physical game is not our problem.... I think they just need to believe in themselves and stop putting so much pressure on themselves. Uremovich took the pressure off her teammates by giving the Seahawks a big cushion in the No. 1 slot, even though she said she wasn t at her best. I actually really didn t play that good, Uremovich said. I played decent, and I scrambled well. Uremovich fought her driver a bit but still managed to hit seven of nine greens in regulation, an impressive task considering Moss Creek s tiny greens. After starting at No. 3, Uremovich rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the par-3 fifth hole. She gave one back at the par-4 ninth to drop to even par, but got it right back with a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-4 first. Kylie Gratton shot 49 to lead the Eagles, who shaved 15 shots off their score from last week. All three teams are in action again Tuesday at Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston. Fifth-year Francis Marion head coach Mark Gaynor welcomes back all six lettermen from last year s squad that compiled a team stroke average of Junior Peter McGibney, a transfer from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, will join the squad this year after attending FMU last year, but not playing. The guys are looking forward to starting the season, Gaynor said. They have all played a lot of golf this summer, and I can tell they have been preparing on their own. We should be a more mature group this year. Everyone knows the drill which makes the preparation and participation in tournament play easier. Hopefully that will allow us to shave some strokes off our averages. I am looking for steady improvement and consistency in our play. I hope we will create opportunities and then take advantage of them. Last year, we gave away spots with poor rounds. We hope to remedy that in The returning players include: senior Jacob Tveit (76.31 stroke average in ); juniors Keith Crowley (80.36), Ronan O Connor (76.13), and Andrew Pitcher (74.39); and sophomores Christopher Couch (74.19) and Jonathan Lavin (79.52) Francis Marion U men s golf team Couch earned his team s MVP award last year as a freshman. He finished in the top half of the field in all but one event, including five Top-25 finishes and two Top-15 showings; carded five sub-par rounds; and set the school record for a freshman with his finalround 66 at William & Mary s tournament. While at Northwestern Oklahoma State, McGibney compiled a 76.7 stroke average and tied for 28th place at the 2006 NAIA regional tournament. He was the Rangers top finishers in eight of nine tournaments, and posted five Top-10 showings. He finished 20th at the 2006 Irish Youths Amateur Open Championship, and is a past All-Ireland National High School Match-Play champion. Gaynor s line-up for the opening tournament will be Couch, McGibney, O Connor, Pitcher, and Tveit. FMU placed 17th at last year s Scenic City Invitational. The following Monday and Tuesday (Sept ), Francis Marion will play host to the 23rd-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate at the Country Club of South Carolina. FMU Golf Corporate Challenge, sponsored by BB&T FLORENCE, SC The Francis Marion University golf program will hold its seventh-annual Corporate Challenge golf tournament, sponsored by Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB&T), at The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. The Challenge is a four-player team stroke event, handicapped by 75 percent of USGA handicaps. A maximum field of 32 teams is expected to be filled by corporations and individuals from throughout the Pee Dee region and the state. Players will be competing for personal prizes as well as having their corporate name engraved on the tournament s perpetual trophy on display at The Country Club of South Carolina. Tournament registration also includes player gifts, lunch, and a veranda party and awards ceremony following the conclusion of play. This event continues to have a great impact on the success of the FMU golf program, stated FMU golf coach Mark Gaynor. As we enter our first year as a full-fledged Division I member, the proceeds from the Challenge will help greatly in our ability to compete at the highest level. We strive to make this event more special each year, and I want those who are involved to know that they each have a hand in the success of our collegiate program. Over the past six years, the event has raised more than $91,000 (+) to benefit the Patriot golf program. BB&T is rated as one of the country s safest and soundest financial institutions. Steve

16 16 Columbia SC Columbia, S.C. The South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame will be adding a new member to its family this winter. On Saturday, December 8, 2007 during the South Carolina Golf Association s Golf Day, Jay Haas will be inducted to join other greats from South Carolina s golf history books. Haas success on and off the golf course are no secret. Born in St. Louis, Haas was introduced to the game by his uncle, 1968 Masters Champion Bob Goalby, at a very early age and took to the game almost immediately. Haas won his first trophy at the National Pee Wee Championship in Orlando when he was only seven years old. Haas proceeded to win several Junior District Titles and three St. Louis District Amateur Championships. That was only the beginning. Haas earned a position with the Wake Forest University Golf Team in 1973 where he became an ACC Individual Champion his freshman year. 17 Myrtle Beach 2nd CAROLINAS MIXED TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP WEST END, NC - A field of 59 teams, including defending champions Anthony and Debbie Adams of Asheville, NC, entered the second Carolinas Mixed Team Championship, which will be played September 1-2 at Ocean Ridge Plantation s Lion s Paw course near Ocean Isle Beach, NC. The Carolinas Golf Association event for teams consisting of a male and female Anthony & Debbie Adams 2006 golfer is a 36-hole four-ball stroke play competition, with the field divided into flights by gross score after the first round. The teams will compete on the par-72, Willard Byrd-designed Lion s Paw Course, which opened in The men will play from tees measuring 6,450 yards, while the ladies course will cover 5,578 yards. This is the second straight year that Ocean Ridge Plantation has hosted the event. Last year, when it was played on the development s Panther s Run course, the husband-wife Adamses shot to win by one stroke over Kevin Atamian and Katie Brenny of Raleigh. Although this is only the second Carolinas Mixed Team Championship, a similar competition had been conducted by the CGA in past years under the group s One-Day Tournament program. For more information about the Mixed Team Championship and many other CGA events, visit the Championship Home Page online at National Final Brings Record Field to Hilton Head HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The island of Hilton Head will host its largest golf tournament ever when the Amateur Golf Tour conducts its 2007 National Championship in late October. A field of approximately 600 golfers from across the country will converge on the island Oct for the tour s national finals. The championship will be contested on a half dozen courses, including three at Palmetto Dunes Resort and two at Port Royal Plantation. The sixth course is Oyster Reef Golf Club. This marks the second straight year the AGT has hosted its national championship on Hilton Head Island. Last year s event drew just under 500 golfers and encompassed five courses. The overall champion was Joe Jaspers of Charlotte, N.C., who fired a course-record 67 on the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes in the final round. We expect another competitive tournament throughout all five flights. Guys are grinding these last weeks of the season to earn enough points to qualify for the National Championship, said tour president Dennis McCormac. The players who came last year really enjoyed Hilton Head Island. In addition to world-class golf, it offers great beaches, restaurants and activities. The record number of participants will be gunning for a total purse of at least $15,000 in gift certificates in the 36-hole stroke play championship. In addition to the Saturday and Sunday rounds, golfers have the opportunity to arrive early for practice rounds from Oct The 3 County Seniors 17 The 3 County Seniors tournament this month was held at the Burning Ridge Golf course. 22 22 Tournament Results South Carolina Juniors lose Karen Ferree Trophy to Georgia The second Georgia-South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match took place August 4-5 at Berkeley Hall in Bluffton, SC. Sponsored by the WSCGA Vicki Hillen Junior Golf Foundation and the Georgia State Golf Association; the matches bring together the top junior girl golfers in the two neighboring states. Teams are composed of the top four finishers from each state s 2007 Girls Championship. The two-day event consists of four singles matches per day. The tournament s format changed to awarding three points for each match: one for the front nine, one for the back nine and one for overall. Both teams are awarded a half point for matches that are all square. Matches were worth only one point last year when South Carolina won 5-3. After nabbing a comeback victory last year, South Carolina struggled early and trailed 8 ½ -3 ½ after Saturdays round. Cayci Ruppe kept the South Carolina team alive through nine holes on Sunday, but Georgia s young girls prevailed in the end as the Peach State mimicked its first-round performance and won the second Georgia-South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match. Playing for the honor of holding The Karen Ferree Trophy for the year, the South Carolina team was represented by 2007 Junior Girls Champion Meredith Few from Aiken, Alex Rankin of Anderson, Taylor Weaver from Spartanburg, and Cayci Ruppe from Gaffney. Representing the winning Georgia team were Mariah Stackhouse from Riverdale, Kathryn Fowler of Americus, Yugene Lee from Athens, and Lindsay Adams from Lawrenceville Lake Marion Where Golfers Play more for Less Judoth Bresky Rosalee Dunston Patricia Craig Golf Package complete with Rental Villa or Rent the Villa for only $ per night and make your own tee times at any of the many Local Courses (expires Aug 31, 2007) (800) Laura Gordon The Women s South Carolina Golf Association is a non-profit organization founded in The WSCGA membership is made up of local Women s Golf Associations throughout the state.
