6 6 Charleston By Steve Conrad Certified Natural Golf Instructor This month we ll talk about some very basic information, ball flight laws, I ll explain this from a right handers perspective. A ball can fly in one of nine different ways (for purposes of this tip we ll not add in the consideration of trajectories). Balls can fly in three directions; straight, left, and right. It can also curve either left or right going in any of the three directions, thus the total of nine. The direction in which a ball flies is controlled by the path of the club through space and of course that is created by the direction of arm swing. As for the curve, well that is solely determined by the angle at which the club face is pointing at the moment of impact and how it relates to the club s path. I.E., an out to in path with a club face open to that path leads to the dreaded start left curving right shot, THE SLICE! Swinging square and straight will produce straight non curving shots, swinging in to out or out to in with the club face square to that path will produce straight right or left shots. How one holds the club in their hands is directly correlated to how the club head will react that is why strong or motorcycled lead hand grips lead to left curving shots as the club head is turning toe toward the golfer after impact, weak lead hands lead to the opposite. So much attention is given in lessons to creating proper swinging motion, but all that REALLY matters is the direction in which one s arms move and the relationship of the face to that direction, the ball doesn t know if you re swinging in a phone booth or if your lead knee leads you into proper impact positioning. The next time you practice go out there with the information above and see how easy it is to begin to change directions and create or limit curves in shots. There is no one mechanical motion which is the silver bullet, we re all different and therefore how could we all swing the way x golfer does, all we have to do is pay attention to the ball s flight and make changes given the knowledge of ball flight laws to get the desired golf shot direction and shape. Heck! the ball is yelling back to us what the direction of arm swing was and what angle the face was at impact. If you want to investigate for yourself how to strike better golf shots. Tim Tang converted a 12 foot birdie putt on the first hole to edge Andrew Motroni and Chris Pond. The approach from 111 yards that set up the birdie was the key to the win. In trouble under trees to the left, Tang hooked a wedge under the trees from 111 yards. Tang and Barr posted 65 to force the playoff with Motroni and Pond, who carded a second day 66. Seven birdies without a bogie gave Tang and Barr their first City 4-Ball Championship. Bobby Mitchell and Dr. John Swicord won the City Senior 4-Ball Championship.(Both players 50 and over playing from the Gold Tees) Their back nine 31 put a fantastic finish on an outstanding 2-day performance. A pair of 68s led the Senior Championship from start to finish, winning by 8 strokes over the nearest competitors. Jerry Wise and Steve Meyer won the City Combination 4- Ball Championship.(One player playing from the White Tees and one player 50 and over playing from the Gold Tees)
