Carolinas PGA Section Newsletter May 1, 2014 Two Carolinas PGA Professionals Play in PGA Tour Events The Carolinas PGA Section has been well represented at PGA Tour events this spring with Two CPGA Professionals competing in both tournaments held in the Carolinas. Rick Lewallen, a PGA Life Member played in the Heritage Classic in Hilton Head, South Carolina in April. Lewallen earned his bid into the PGA event by winning the Carolinas PGA Heritage Classic Member qualifier held a few weeks prior during the first round of the Carolinas PGA Head Professional Championship. This week Kelly Mitchum, PGA will be teeing it up at the Wells Fargo Championship. The Wells Fargo Championship will be played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC May 1st - May 4th. Mitchum earned his exemption into the event from his outstanding tournament play last year and finishing as the 2013 Carolinas PGA Player of the Year. CPGA Members will also be representing the Section at the PGA Professional National Championship in June being contested in Myrtle Beach, SC. They will be battling with the top PGA Professionals from all over the country for a chance to qualify for the 2015 PGA Championship. We will have more information available soon on who will be competing and also how you can help out and get involved with the tournament. 2 Dear Carolinas PGA Professionals, In April your officers, District 10 Director Rick Murphy, and our Executive Director Ron Schmid attended the PGA Southern Super Regional in Atlanta, GA. An Association update was given by PGA Secretary Derrick Sprague. In addition, National PGA Secretary candidates gave presentations and were interviewed in multiple formats by representatives from our Section, along with the Dixie, Golf States, Tennessee, Kentucky, Middle Atlantic, North Florida, South Florida, Georgia and Illinois Sections. My fellow officers and I highly encourage anyone with questions or information about the process, or the candidates, to contact us directly. The PGA of America agreed to increase Section ADP funding for all 41 sections and currently your officers, Executive Director and entire board are collectively compiling a list of how the entirety of those funds can be best utilized. It is extremely encouraging to see National making such a tremendous effort to support all of its Sections, and the entire PGA. Responses to our Big Week survey were impressive, and the results were compiled and are available to be viewed in our April Newsletter, and on our Section website. I would like to personally encourage everyone to view the data, and I thank every Carolina s member that took the time to send us your feedback. In June, your Officers and Executive Director will begin our journey to attend all ten Area Meetings within the Carolinas Section. It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to visit with professionals from all over the Section, and to inform/update you on all PGA business both on a National and Section level. Your feedback and interaction are highly encouraged and appreciated. Please remember to educate yourself about our upcoming Drive, Chip & Putt qualifiers, and be part of the Road to Augusta. Working with Honorary President Mike Casto, Vice President John Marino, Secretary Paige Cribb, District 10 Director Rick Murphy, and Executive Director Ron Schmid over the last three months since our elections has been a true pleasure, and these individuals are working tirelessly to serve the entire Carolinas PGA membership in the most professional and productive manner possible. My wish for everyone is a successful 2014 at your facilities and health and happiness for all of you and your families. Please remember to contact me directly if I can ever be of any assistance. It is an honor to be your President. Sincerely, Letter from the President Chad Newton, PGA President of The PGA of America 2
3 Dear Carolinas PGA Professionals: Letter from the Executive Director Is spring finally here? I certainly hope so! There isn t one professional I have spoken to that is not ready to enjoy a little of the beautiful spring weather for which the Carolinas Section is famous. However, I am afraid that spring will pass quickly, and we will find ourselves in the heat and humidity that will soon be part of our normal summertime routine. Unfortunately, it looks as if the unseasonably cold weather has caused extensive winter kill for many of our facilities. I hope that as temperatures continue to warm, and nighttime low temps stay more favorable to warm season grasses, we will start to see more green in our bermuda grass areas. We will continue to keep our fingers crossed knowing none of us can control the weather. Last month marked the first Drive, Chip & Putt competition held at the August National Golf Club. What a thrill it had to be for the 88 young people who made it to the finals. The PGA was certainly well represented at the finals as Vice President Sprague was on duty at the 18th green, greeting each participant after they putted, while President Bishop helped wrap up the competition by presenting awards to the age division champions. If you know of a junior player who you believe may wish to have the same opportunity as one of the 88 that made it to the finals in Augusta, there is still time for them to start the process. Registration is now open, and you need only to have your junior players click on the following link to register and take part. Don t forget, there is no cost to enter the competition. June will mark the beginning of our Annual Summer Area Meeting and Area Challenge Golf swing. This is where the Section comes to you, making it a little easier for you to earn MSR credit, while having an opportunity to learn more about your Association. Currently, the agenda is being shaped, and the officers would like to know what items you would prefer to discuss during your Area meeting. The goal is to have the agenda reflect a more town hall feel. To that end, they are asking for some questions in advance to help get the meeting going. We did this recently at a Mountains Chapter meeting, and the two hours allocated for the meeting and education were gone in what seemed like a matter of minutes. Please give any of the officers or myself a call, or send an , so we will know what is on your mind. I know that once we get the exchange of ideas moving we will quickly wish we had more time, but to do that we need to hear from you. Along with the meetings and education we will be hosting during June and July, we will also be conducting elections in all even numbered Areas. If there was ever a time that you thought you wanted to become involved, and you work in one of the even numbered Areas (2-10), this is your chance to become more involved with the business of your Association. We need professionals who are not afraid to give back. I hope we can count on you! Although it would be nice to think we will have Carolinas PGA members jumping in to be our next board members, we know that will not likely be the case. So if you want to become involved, another good way is to take part in your PGA Section s extensive tournament program. And if you do not feel like your game is where you would like it to be, how about a one day pro-am, or perhaps the Club Car Pro-Official. These events are a great way to network with your fellow professionals, and find out what they are doing to help make their facility a success. Sincerely, Ron Schmid, PGA Executive Director of The PGA of America 3
