1 McCall Golf & Country Club McCall Matters Page 1 General Manager s Letter Bob Casler With September, I am looking forward to some cooler weather, many parents are excited about kids going back to school, and EAGLES football is heating up! It doesn t get any better than this!! Hopefully the humidity will spare us in September! September and October are awesome months to play golf so get out there and use the course! Our Ladies Member/Guest Day was a huge success and our McCall ladies headed up by Georgetta McCabe did an awesome job with the planning of the event as well as their theme Swing with Bling. A special thanks to Bill Shields and Gracie Sloane for their exceptional attention to detail. Our Chef Bill did a super job with the menu. The shrimp and the roasted filet along with the asparagus and potato buds were amazing! Thanks to the Pro Shop and Greens staff for their participation. Great job everyone! We have some great tournaments left in the season so don t miss the Member/Guest Day on Sunday, September 10, as well as on September 24 the Member/Member or Two-Person Better Ball. Our final tournament will be the Fall Scramble on Sunday, October 8. Keep an eye out for the fliers with all the details. Sign up NOW!! It was so nice to see our members come out for Chef Bill s Anniversary Buffet. Chef Bill loves to do member events in general. In September, Chef has two very nice buffets coming up. Look for an coming out soon for the Tuesday Night Buffet menu on September 12. Chef Bill has been a long-time colleague of mine and it gives me great pleasure to see him excited about his loyalty to our membership. Keep up the good work Chef!

When arriving, it is important to stop in the Pro Shop and sign the book. Check off the activity you will be doing while on the property as well as your affiliation. For golf, this helps us determine the rounds played here each month and a variety of details to help us better serve you the member. Another important reason is at times we may receive an emergency phone call for you. By signing the book, we can tell where you are and get that important message to you. Also there is a rule that is being broken more often than all of us here would like to see. When coming to play golf, EVERYONE MUST start off at the 1 st tee. If there is a valid reason to start off on a different hole, please check first with the Pro Shop and get the okay from them first. Certain members are parking in either the upper or lower parking lots and heading right out to either the 5 th or the 12 th holes. Hit them straight, fix your divots and ball marks!! Enjoy the fall season and your Labor Day weekend!! Bob

A lot has to do with traffic both golfer and maintenance staff traffic, which means it is time for aeration, my favorite time of the year, next to frost delay. We will start approaches, tees and fairways immediately paying attention to wear spots around the greens and approaches first so we can get some seed germination to heal those spots. Greens will be done on Monday, September 18, and although we will get the majority of work done on that day, it will take us a couple of days to complete so if this kind of activity bugs you it is time for a road trip. We have been spraying some herbicides to knock back crabgrass in fairways and also in fairways you will notice some larger patches which is bent grass intrusion into our ryegrass fairways. We are trying to weaken the bent to get more rye so that the fairways are more uniform. So over the next two months there will be a lot of activity as we accomplish fall renovations. We will try to stay out of your way as much as possible but us running into you is inevitable so thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. I have had more complaints this year than ever before from members stating that members do not take care of our great golf course; I know I am busting my butt. They beg me to do something about it but I am no beggar so once again I say if you fix your ball marks and divots and rake your footprints in the bunkers thank you very much. If you don t, I have to ask why not? I just don t understand that mentality. One member had to apologize to a guest for all the ball marks on our greens. So please help me out and do your share to fix the damage you cause and then we can all be proud of our Club. When you bring a guest out to play, you the member are responsible for his behavior including his attire. Shirts, shorts, pants and shoes should be proper golf attire. I say shoes because for the first time we had a guest playing barefoot which kind of scares me thinking they could step on the broken tees you guys leave laying around and that is the best thing I can think they would step on. So, yes, shoes are required if for nothing else than your personal safety and if you don t wear them I will ask you to spray your stinky feet and put foot wear on your feet. Thanks for your help. Well I hope everyone has a nice Labor Day holiday weekend as we say an unofficial goodbye to summertime, which we hardly got to know and as always thanks for being a member at McCall. Joe

4 Page 4 McCall Matters The Pro Shop Eric Figueroa, PGA Golf Professional September Hours of Operation Mondays - 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesdays thru Sundays - 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM Well, another summer has come and gone. It is amazing how fast the years go by. Although summer is on its way out, it doesn t mean we stop playing golf. This time of year is usually the best time to play. Make sure to set some time aside to come out and play. Be sure to stop into the Pro Shop and check out the fall merchandise as it starts to show up. The winter will be here before you know it! Club Championship Results Men s Club Championship The final match of the Championship match was played between Jay Campbell and new member, Jack Scholz. The final match was set to be played over 36 holes. After the first 18, Jack Scholz held a 2 up lead. Jay Campbell started the second round by winning the first hole. Jack then won the second hole. The duo stayed around the 2 up number for a while. Jack then took over the match on the back 9. Jack then closed out the match on the 31 st hole. Congrats to both players for reaching the final match and congrats to Jack for becoming the 2017 Club Champion! A Flight John Costa and Andy Green squared off for the A Flight Championship. Both players played well in order to get to the final match. John and Andy also played hard in the final match. John proved to be too much for Andy as John takes the A Flight title! Congrats gentlemen! B Flight Barry Rubenstein and Steve Riehl took to the course to determine who would be crowned as the B Flight Champion. Both players played strong to get to this point. Barry rode his short game to the title. He had worn down several players with his hot wedge and putter. It is always tough to run into a player who is getting up and down from everywhere. Unfortunately, Steve saw it firsthand. Congrats to both players for their hard fought play! Thank you to all who participated in the Club Championship. This is every club s main tournament. It should be a goal for all members to be able to compete in their club s prestigious event. I hope to see more players compete next year!

Marcy Roche and Debbie Deeney squared off once again for the league title. Debbie surged through her matches to get to the final. Marcy rode her consistent game to meet Debbie in the final match. Marcy proved to be too much for Debbie in the end. Marcy repeats as the League Champion. Congrats Marcy on the victory! UPCOMING EVENTS Member/Guest (September 10) - Course Closed Until 3:30 PM Format: 2 Best Balls of 4 at 80% handicap (NOT a Scramble). Members can bring 1 or 3 guests for the event. Players will play their own ball and count the 2 lowest net scores for each hole. All players must have an updated USGA handicap index in order to participate. Breakfast will start at 8:00 AM Shotgun start for golf at 9:00 AM Lunch and prizes to follow golf! Members: $45.00 Guests: $65.00 Two-Person Better Ball (September 24) - Course Closed Until 1:00 PM Shotgun start for golf at 8:30 AM Lunch and prizes after golf Members: $35.00 Guests: $45.00 Fall Scramble (October 8) The Fall Scramble is a five-person scramble. This event is a staple on the schedule and sells out quickly. Please call the Pro Shop to reserve a spot in the event! More details will be available soon.

It is also an excuse to cut out of work just a bit early and get 11 holes in. All players are welcome to participate. A few ladies have finished in the money. Just bring along your handicap and sign in at the first tee. Hope you can make it out!!!!! Hole in One Congrats to Steve Rigo for his hole in one! Key Reminders Please be sure to check into the Pro Shop before playing. Everyone MUST start on the 1 st hole unless permission is granted by the Pro Shop to start on another hole. Proper attire is required to play or to use the practice facilities. Please fix ball marks, replace divots and rake bunkers. Cart reservations are booking fast. Be sure to reserve a cart two days in advance. Cart Rentals Please note that riding carts must be in and off the golf course 15 minutes before the Pro Shop closes. The Pro Shop closes at 7:00 PM in September. Please make sure to have the carts back by 6:45 PM. Thank you for your understanding! 7 Page 7 McCall Matters The Member s Voice Richard Flebbe, 2017 Greens Chairman From The Putting Green The arrival of September brings the expectation of cool mornings and warm afternoons which translates into excellent playing conditions whether it is tennis or golf. Also, a harbinger of the coming winter season, school is back in session, which means more morning traffic as school buses are picking up students and of course leaves on the driving surfaces. There are later starting times as we lose morning minutes of daylight. It is important to abide by the rules of the Club; such as no groups of five on the golf course; please repair your teeing areas and fairway divots and, of course, repair your ball marks on the greens. The golf course is not a practice zone so play only one ball when on the course. Follow the rules, it is that simple, then everyone can have a pleasant golfing experience. Should you have any confusion or misunderstanding of the rules, please stop in and see Joe Candelore and he will clear up any confusion. Rich Tennis Bambi Dudley Fall is perfect for learning tennis! The 18-hole league championship was won by Marcy Roche, the 9-hole league championship is still in progress at this writing and then we celebrated our third annual Ladies Member/Guest which was another huge success and blessed by gorgeous weather. Lots of winners and prizes - low gross was the foursome of Joachim, Feustel, Roche & Sokoloff; low net winners were Dorsaneo, Day & Cosentino; closest to straight line was won by Barbara Joachim and closest to the pin was won by Loretta Dorsaneo. Nice job ladies and a special thanks to Bob Casler, Bill Shields, Chef Bill, Eric, Omar and servers Megan & John for another great event! A special thanks to Gracie Sloan for going over and above for us. I received so many nice compliments from our guests on what a top notch club we have here at McCall.

I want to thank the entire staff here at McCall for another job well done during the summer months as well as the spring. A huge thank you goes out to all department heads and their staffs. The clubhouse during the month of August was a little slow but that is the norm for this time of year with it being the biggest vacation month. We now have to gear ourselves back up and get ready for the month of September. We have a few member events going on during the month of September so check them out below and mark your calendars. It is bittersweet for me as this is my first fall I will not be returning to school! However, in the spirit of learning I was thinking since I have recently had some questions about the website that I would do a brief tutorial for anyone having trouble. Welcome to our McCall Golf & Country Club Website! If you haven t gone to our new site, this is our home page and where you can navigate to find anything you are looking for. It is filled with all kinds of information you may need from Wedding and Banquet Menus, to Golf Flag Color, to the upcoming Tuesday Night Buffet Menu. Information about Golf Tournaments, upcoming member events, calendars and scheduling are always up to date and easy to navigate. Any information about PECO BA & AA is easy to find under their designated tab! There are also tons of pictures of our facility and even a virtual tour. If you have had any events here and would like to share your pictures, I would love to see them and they may even make it to the site!

I would like to thank all our volunteers for their hard work, passion, and commitment for the improvements that are recognized by all. Your support and time is greatly appreciated. Thank you from the staff here at McCall. Now with the fall season arrival, it is time to get out your crock pots and turn on your oven as it is comfort food time. Comfort food is traditionally eaten food which often provides a nostalgic or sentimental feeling to the person eating it, frequently with a high carbohydrate level and a simple preparation. This will be my focus on future menus for our dinner buffet nights starting in October. Please let me know some of your favorites as I will add your suggestions to the menus that will follow. This month s recipe will be a classic. As many of you attended our last dinner buffet, I prepared a Pot Roast Soup, so if you have any meat left over, you can make a soup with the remaining meat. Slow Cooker Pot Roast Yield 8-10 Ingredients One 4-pound beef chuck roast Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup all-purpose flour plus more for coating 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 medium carrots cut into 2-inch pieces 3 stalks celery peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 medium onion cut into 1/2-inch wedges 3 cloves garlic, mashed 3 tablespoons tomato paste 1 cup red wine 3 cups low-sodium beef broth 3 bay leaves 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 cup loosely packed parsley leaves, chopped

Page 14 McCall Matters Culinary Corner William Bodek, Chef Directions Sprinkle the roast all over with 2-1/2 teaspoons salt and 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper. Coat in flour and shake off any excess.

Transfer the roast to the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker, along with the carrots, celery, onions and garlic. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet over medium heat.

14 Page 14 McCall Matters Culinary Corner William Bodek, Chef Directions Sprinkle the roast all over with 2-1/2 teaspoons salt and 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper. Coat in flour and shake off any excess. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the roast to the skillet and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 8 minutes, turning as needed. Transfer the roast to the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker, along with the carrots, celery, onions and garlic. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet over medium heat. Add the tomato paste and stir until the oil begins to turn brick-red, about 1 minute. Add the flour and wine and whisk until thick (it is OK if there are some lumps). Add the beef broth, bay leaves, thyme, allspice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper and bring to a simmer, whisking, until the gravy is smooth and thickens slightly, about 4 minutes. Pour the gravy into the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours. The roast and vegetables should be tender. Remove the roast and let rest for a few minutes. Discard the thyme stems and strain the vegetables, reserving the gravy. Toss the vegetables with half the parsley and season with salt and pepper. Stir the remaining parsley into the gravy and season with salt and pepper. Slice the roast against the grain. Serve the meat and vegetables on a platter, moistening them with some of the gravy. Serve the remaining gravy on the side. Chef Bill
