Prior to my arrival at McCall Golf and Country Club, I did my due diligence to research the history of MG&CC. I discovered a recurring theme in official history records and articles published over the years since its inception in The club was consistently referred to as a Hidden Gem in Delaware County. This made me curious so I pursued the opportunity to discuss the General Manager position with the club s leadership. Even during the interview process, club officials referred to the club in the same manner. Since I have been here the following is a sampling of what I have learned that contributes to the club being endeared as a Hidden Gem. First and foremost is the club s golf course. Did you know that your golf course has the handprints of two of the most famous golf course architects in history. When the club opened, the original nine holes were created by Donald J. Ross. This, now world renowned architect, has built many of the United States most respected courses including Aronimink Golf Club, Pinehurst #2, Oak Hill Country Club to mention just a few. Mr. Ross was an accomplished golfer in addition to his designer talents. He was a regular participant in both the US Open and the British Open from 1898 through As a true Ross enthusiast, this club has got to be special with his design elements. In the early 1930 s it appears that MG&CC acquired additional acreage to accommodate an additional nine holes as golf was the fastest growing sport in the region. The club had contracted with William Flynn to design the complementing nine. You may also recognize this name as he is considered one of the best in his craft. A sampling of his famous courses include Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Rolling Green Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club. In doing some additional research, I came to find only one other course that has the permanent marks of both of these world famous architects. A hidden gem? Indeed. During the interview process, I requested to play the golf course to get a real feel for the culture of the club, the facilities, staff and playability of the course. I was hosted by Mr. Joe Cassidy and Mr. Bill McCabe who entertained me to a most enjoyable round of golf. When I first looked at the scorecard, I recall saying to myself, Oh, you got this. Looked like a short course that I would score well on. Then I had my real welcome to McCall. I will call it precision golf, because this is very definitely a shot maker's course. A player is rewarded for precise target golf and penalized for errant shots. Well guarded, smaller greens protect the integrity of the word par at McCall. A Hidden Gem? Indeed. Shortly after my arrival, we had our first team meeting. As everyone was arriving, I asked about their tenure at McCall. You can tell a lot about the stability of a club by the tenure of its management team. Team members present included Joe Candelore, Eric Figueroa, Bill Shields, Debbie Valinsky, Bill Bodek, Kathy Cullen and Kathleen Verzella. This team represents a total of 93 years of history at McCall. Since day one, they were welcoming the transition of management and are consistently embracing change to help make McCall the best for the staff and membership. 93 years? A Hidden Gem? Indeed. Finally, the first six weeks of being at the club have only been rewarding by meeting many of the fine members of MG&CC. After all, members are what make a club! The club community is very special at McCall with the various programs hosted on the course promoting camaraderie and sportsmanship. League play, special events and casual golf are the core of the membership s value here. A Hidden Gem? Indeed. 2 Page 2 McCall Matters The Golf Course Joe Candelore, Director of Golf & Facilities Since the Nor easters of March this year has been a real battle. I have always thought the battle is easier on the dry side when area we don t have irrigation just go dormant but will come back to life and we can just add water as the turf needs it. But when it is too wet and the turf dies from wet wilt or in low areas that stay wet too long and the sun hits them and boils the roots away then golf cart traffic runs over them, it is more of a struggle to bring these areas back. Although we have had some issues on 6, 8 and 9 they are alive and living. A few years ago they would have been dead. The moisture has been so extreme that even a.25 of light rain super saturates the course then golf traffic just pushes it over the edge. For the most part the course is in ok playing shape. I have told you we struggled with some nasty diseases for the past 2 months especially on #1 and #3 but we have been able to stop progression and actually start to see healing. The good news is the turf affected is Poa and the turf growing in is Bent so in a weird way the greens will be stronger. The other good news is that it is September and that means Fall Renovation time with aerating, seeding and fertilizing to bring the course back from a hard summer and have a good fall golf season. On Monday September 10 th we will be doing the greens with the Dry Jet system which uses water pressure to inject sand into the greens rather then pulling a core. It causes almost no surface disruption, firms the greens up and makes them roll great. This will set them up nicely for the Member/Guest. We have already started some repair work in the roughs in front of some greens so we can get some quick germination and recovery. You can help us out by trying to change the way you get around the course and staying off sore areas, we are a small compact course and I know there are only so many ways to get around and traffic damage is a given but every little bit helps so try when you can. The golf course staff have been working none stop to keep the course in good playing shape and we will continue to do so into the fall. We have had more coverage on the weekends then we have a for awhile all in an effort to make your round enjoyable. On a Saturday August afternoon we had a rain storm with rain amounts I have not seen for a while, the water just ran because the ground is saturated. The I feel we had a wind storm that took down 7 trees across # 1, 3 and 4. The course was so wet you could not even get up #1 fairway. We closed the course then and came in on Sunday and cleaned it up and opened up. We had to blow every green, tee and fairway. We had to rebuild the approaches to the bridges down the bottom, blow and pick debris, rebuild the 5 bunkers down there. Bottom line if you appreciate the effort the crew is giving let them know that is what keeps us going like madmen. As always thanks for being a member at this great place called McCall. Joe

It is amazing how fast the years go by. Although Summer is on its way out, it doesn t mean we stop playing golf. This time of year is usually the best time to play. Make sure to set some time aside to come out and play. Be sure to stop into the Pro Shop and check out the Fall merchandise as it starts to show up. The Winter will be here before you know it! Members can bring 1 or 3 Guests for the event. Players will play their own ball and count the 2 lowest net scores for each hole. All players must have an updated USGA Handicap index in order to participate. It is also an excuse to cut out of work just a bit early, and get 11 holes in. All players are welcome to participate. A few ladies have finished in the money. Just bring along your handicap, and sign in at the first tee. Hope you can make it out!!!!! Hole in One Congrats to Jack Scholz for his hole in one! Jack has multiple aces during his short time here at McCall. Not to mention he won the Club Championship last year! Key Reminders Please be sure to check into the Pro Shop before playing Everyone MUST start on the 1st hole unless permission is granted by the Pro Shop to start on another hole. Proper attire is required to play or to use the practice facilities Please fix ball marks, replace divots and rake bunkers Carts reservations are booking fast. Be sure to reserve a cart 2 days in advance. CART RENTALS Please note that riding carts must be in off the golf course 15 minutes before the Pro Shop closes. The Pro Shop closes at 7:00 PM in September. Please make sure to have the carts back by 6:45 PM. Thank you for your understanding! Eric

5 Page 5 McCall Matters Women s Golf League Georgetta McCabe, President Our 4th annual Ladies Member Guest held on Wednesday, August 22, was a huge success. The weather also cooperated for the 34 ladies who played. This year s theme was Philly Special and was highlighted by a magnificent liberty bell ice sculpture - kudos to Bill Shields and Kathleen - who knew you guys had so many talents!! 6 Page 6 McCall Matters September, 2018 Conference Center Bill Shields, Food & Beverage Director It s hard to believe that another summer has come to an end and it was not one of our best with the weather it seemed like if it was not 100 degrees it was raining instead. I would like to start off by thanking all my staff for all their hard work that they have put in the past few months it was a busy couple of months and you all did an outstanding job. I would also like to wish all of the staff members who are going back to school the best of luck in this upcoming school season I would also like to thank you Joe Candelore and staff for all their hard work that they put in recently with the Rain & Wind damage that took place on the golf course. You guys did a great job in getting the course ready for play with all the trees down and debris that was all over the course and grounds. Club Events On Wednesday August 22 nd the Ladies Member Guest Tournament was held and what a beautiful day the ladies had and a Special Thank you goes out the Committee of Barbara Joachim, Marcy Roche and Loretta Dorsaneo for organizing such a great event and it was a pleasure working with you ladies this year. This years theme was theme Philly Special our ladies perfectly executed the décor by decorating The Fireplace Room and every hole Philly style with Underdog masks, Philadelphia sports teams, Rocky posters, and more. 9 Page 9 McCall Matters Culinary Corner William Bodek, Chef September, as we count down the final summer days and welcome the fall season, here at the McCall we are working on our fall grille menu as well as dinner buffet nights for fall and winter season. Any menu suggestions will be appreciated. I like thank all that was here at our last buffet night, as many of you were here. Awesome turn out. As it was my 10th year here at McCall, thank you for the gifts and cards, it was very thoughtful and I truly appreciate the support from all. I've been looking forward for the Autumn season as it's been a blazing with high temperatures and a lot of rain. As you know, Joe and his staff have down a great job with the golf course during this extraordinary summer season. Our next Dinner Buffet will be on September 11 and will include this months recipe, Bolognese sauce. Bolognese Sauce Ingredients 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and coarsely chopped 1/2 ground chorizo sausage, removed from its casing 1/2 pound mild italian sausage, removed from its casing 1/2 pound ground chuck beef One 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes 1/4 cup flat-leaf Italian parsley, chopped 8 fresh basil leaves, chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano In a large skillet heat the olive oil. When almost smoking, add the onion and garlic and sauté over medium heat until the onions become very soft, about 8 minutes. Raise heat to high and add the ground beef, Italian sausage, and the chorizo sausage. Sauté, stirring frequently and breaking up any large lumps and cook until meat is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, parsley and basil and cook over medium low heat until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper. This will take approximately 1/2 hour. Finish Bolognese with Pecorino Romano. Serving 4-6 This dish works great with fettuccine. Enjoy Chef Bill Chef Bill
