2 2017 Golf Universe Men s & Ladies Club Closing Scramble There were 80 men and 28 ladies that competed in the 2017 Golf Universe Men s & Ladies Club Closing Scramble. Clint Nevills, Joe Mendoza, Phil Luther and Mike Thurman won the Men s Division with a score of 58. Jill Blom, Krista Paulson, Tami Swart and Saluna Campbell won the Ladies Division with a score of 70 in a putt off. There were 327 men and 63 ladies that entered into the 2017 Golf Universe $1,000 Hole- In-One Pot. Harold Mazzei was the closest to the pin on hole #12 for the men (2 feet 10 inches) and received $1,000. Jill Blom was the closest to the pin on hole #12 for the ladies (5 feet 4 ¾ inches) and received $200.The other par 3 s paid $125 each for the men and $75 each for the ladies. All 21 players who made a hole-in-one during the season plus the winning teams in the closing scramble each got an opportunity at the Golf Universe $1,000 Hole-In-One Shootout. It was 67 yards for both the men and ladies. The shots were taken from the #10 Blue Tee Block to #18 Green. Andy Brandt was the closest for the men (1 foot 3 ½ inches) and Wendy Simpson was the closest for the ladies (11 feet 9 inches). They each received a $500 Golf Universe Gift Certificate. Net was determined by using the World-Famous Handicapping System. Payout was done in Duck Bucks. 5 Affiliated Golf Courses We have worked out an agreement with both Tri-City Country Club and Horn Rapids Golf Club that all Golf Members in good standing get 50% off their rack rates through 12/31/18. When frost is present, we will delay play until the frost has melted. This is done to prevent damage that affects the quality of the playing surface and could potentially be very expensive and time consuming to repair. Frost is essentially frozen dew that has crystallized on the grass, making it hard and brittle. A grass blade is actually 90 percent water; therefore, it also freezes. Because of the short mowing height (sometimes as low as 1/8 inch) and fragile nature of the turf, putting greens are most affected by frost. Walking on frost covered greens causes the plant to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to function normally. When the membrane is broken, much like an egg, it cannot be put back together. Generally, damage isn t seen for hours later as the plant leaves turn brown and die. The result is a thinning of the putting surface and a weakening of the plant. The greens in turn become more susceptible to disease and weeds. While it may not appear to be much of an issue if a foursome begins play early on frost covered greens, consider the number of footprints that may occur on any given hole by one person is approximately 60. Multiply that by 18 holes with an average of 200 rounds per day and the result is 216,000 footprints on greens in a day or 6,480,000 in a month. P 6 November 2017
