4 Expert Analysis By Nick Rousso BEST BET: (th race) First Race.. Wedge of Gold. Rigoberto Velasquez has been shopping for a spot for SASHA B. He entered her for $,00 last week, and in a $,00, six-furlong claimer versus males Saturday. If she starts here, the speedy SASHA B can be formidable up front; she's a step quicker than her pace rivals and figures to enjoy the abbreviated trip. WEDGE OF GOLD, an improving horse going route to sprint for a low-profile barn, looms large from just off the pace. UP YOUR PLAN is sharp but unreliable, finishing second nine times in starts, including the past two. LAFAYETTE STAR is undefeated in four starts at this distance but was slugglish in her last start and switches to a rider who's for this year. It's a sketchy group. Second Race... LADY IN SILK laid an egg in her last start, retreating to finish last after flashing brief speed as the 9- favorite. But her two-back effort, a pace-setting third in which she fought back gamely from a tiring rail path, was a good one, and trainer Jim Penney knows what he's doing. If Penney has found the necessary fix, LADY IN SILK can be a handful in her first try around two turns. If not, TEMPESTINATEAPOT and PLAN A GAME, who finished a length apart under similar conditions in their last start, can duke it out once again. Third Race. Goin Out Tonite.. GOIN OUT TONITE is poised to pop at a big price in a competitive $,00 maiden claimer for state-bred -year-old fillies. While her form looks dark, GOIN OUT TONITE was walking to the leaders in her last start before getting stopped repeatedly at the top of the lane and then getting bounced off the inner rail. She rallied from there, only to clip heels and nearly fall. Note the rider change. The low-profile GOIN OUT TONITE is live. STARLIGHT GEM checks out nicely on the Beyer front, owns the controlling speed and gets the riding services of Mario Gutierrez. A short price is guaranteed. STORMY TINA, MATFINISH and BLUE BUTTON have their merits, too. Many contenders. Fourth Race... Silver Sneakers MAJORCA GOLD accelerated strongly on the turn to bury cheaper in his last start, owns the top last-race Beyer and hails from a barn that gets 'em sharp and keeps 'em sharp. He'll take a ton of beating, even if this is a much tougher spot. HEZA WITCH DOCTOR set killer fractions in his season debut and paid the price, but the vastly underrated HEZA WITCH DOCTOR should be on his toes second off the layoff, and now leading rider Juan Gutierrez jumps aboard for trainer Howard Belvoir. Move this guy to the top spot if it rains. SILVER SNEAKERS also gets a positive rider change after a racing wide at this level in his last start. Good value here. IMMIGRATION hits hard at this level but hasn't won in ages. And what do we do with GOGGLES MCCOY, a former top-class sprinter who has fallen on hard times? A date with $,00 claimers could be his ticket to a quick turnaround. Fifth Race.. Flying Jack. TOBIAH'S JOURNEY, a hard-luck loser in a few of his recent starts, can get his long-overdue third career victory against these. He charts for a ground-saving trip from the two hole and is fast enough to dictate terms from on or just off the pace. FLYING JACK is no picnic -- none of these are -- but he's likely to get away at a juicy price for a low-profile barn. Leslie Mawing sticks around for the mount, and FLYING JACK, stretching out third off the layoff, does his best work at eight furlongs. THIS LAD IS GOLD has improved steadily for Tim McCanna; he'll be rolling late, as will JUST JOKIN AROUND. It could be a free-for-all if the top pick fails to fire. Sixth Race... Here's a terrific stakes race for -year-olds, with speedy newcomer ITALIAN BOY complicating the pace scenario for division leaders MAKORS FINALE and D'HONORABLE ONE and setting things up, we hope, for the rapidly improving EDGE FORWARD. Highly impressive in his maiden victory in late May, EDGE FORWARD jumped into the deep end of the pool in his last start, and his effort, a fading fourth after getting eliminated in tight quarters at the top of the lane, was better than it looks on paper. EDGE FORWARD is bred to run all day, and a hot pace could set him up for a smashing victory at a square price. MAKORS FINALE has been dead-game in his two starts at the meeting and doesn't necessarily need the lead to run a winning race. That's a good thing, because the freaky ITALIAN BOY, trying two turns for the first time, will be flying early. If MAKORS FINALE expends a lot of energy at the start, he could be vulnerable late. D'HONORABLE ONE is a fast horse, and an obvious contender, but might be better short than long. ITALIAN BOY can take them a long way on the front end, but this is a tough assignment for horse making his first stakes appearance. Seventh Race... WOWIE MAUI, stretching out for his second start following a three-month layoff, should be an elusive target in a crackerjack $,000 claimer for older horses. WOWIE MAUI loves a flat mile (first or second in of starts), has never run a bad race at Emerald Downs and retains the hot-riding Juan Gutierrez. Come and catch me. GO WITH GUSTO has won four consecutive starts with steadily increasing Beyers. He got a dream setup in his last start, running down a pair who dueled through six furlongs in :0 and change, and will have to do more of the heavy lifting in this one. Vulnerable underlay. SHOWME YOURFRIENDS faltered in the slop in his last start but his two-back effort behind Aaron the Baron was rock-solid. He's a stakes winner at this distance. KOOKY SALUKI and CANDY FOR DEBBIE are interesting items, too. It's a dynamic little five-pack. Eighth Race Page of

5 ... EXCLUSIVE DIVA overcame the outside draw and some devious tactics by a rival jockey to put away a good field in her last start. While ROYAL MOSES finished like a house afire to offer a challenge in the final sixteenth, the supremely talented EXCLUSIVE DIVA wasn't stopping. The only drawback is the price; she's liable to get hammered yet again. ROYAL MOSES has tons of ability and is just getting the hang of things. She'll break through one of these days for underrated trainer Tim Harder, who has hit the board with 9 of starters at the meeting. SMOKIN' GREY made eye-catching moves in each of her past two victories and might take kindly to a route of ground. A rising star for trainer Frank Lucarelli, SMOKIN' GREY could be any kind. She'll have to be special to collar the top pick. REGAL BETTY, a third-stringer from John Sadler's barn, should appreciate what might be softer company, but she has yet to run a fast race, and closers like this are seldom rewarded at Emerald Downs. Ninth Race... GOLDLEDUE, an money-burning hanger for most of his career, ran the race of his life in his last start, towers over these on the Beyer scale and figures to click right back. Like him; just don't trust him. KINZIE'S KING looked good beating -year-olds in his first try against winners and has enough speed to keep the top pick busy all the way around. GENUINE GEM is cycling toward a peak effort, but like many of these, he's more inclined to finish second than first. Page of
