Arrogate Runs Into the Record Books With Travers Win, Throws Hat into Ring for Breeders Cup Classic Baffert Seeks Unprecedented Third Straight Classic The race for the 3-year-old championship, and quite possibly the pecking order of favoritism in the $6 million Breeders Cup Classic, changed over the course of 1 minute and seconds Saturday afternoon in Springs, when Juddmonte Farm s ARROGATE blitzed the deepest field of 3-yearolds since the Kentucky Derby en route to a devastating 13 ½-length win in the $1.25 million Travers (GI, see race recap below). Travers: Video The Bob Baffert-trained son of 1995 Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled s Song set a new track record for 1 ¼ miles in the process while undoubtedly serving notice to handicap stars California Chrome and Frosted that he ll be a force to be reckoned with come November 5 at Santa Anita. Baffert will try to become the first trainer to win the Breeders Cup Classic three consecutive years, having saddled Bayern to win the 2014 race at Santa Anita and with American Pharoah last year at Keeneland. Arrogate may be late to the party he did not make his career debut until April and was making his stakes debut in the Travers but he s come a long way in a short period of time, while improving his record to 4- for-5 lifetime with his tour de force in s most signature race. Using a blend of devastating speed and stamina, he simply ran a field that included Triple Crown heroes EXAGGERATOR and CREATOR, who won the Preakness and Belmont, respectively, off their feet, while beating four other stakes winners in the process. His speedy running style and 2-for-2 record at Santa Anita could pose a definite roadblock

2 to California Chrome, the pro-tem Horse of the Year leader who used similar ease in wiring the Win and You re In TVG Pacific Classic (GI) August 20 at Del Mar to earn a Classic berth. The Travers win made amends, to a certain degree, for the huge upset Baffert s Triple Crown winner American Pharoah suffered in the race last year. While that immortal of the turf entered the race long on stakes experience, Baffert was impressed with the mountain Arrogate had to climb to join the best of his generation, while noting he ll likely take the road less traveled to Santa Anita. That was a pretty big jump that he made today. I'm sure that all his Beyer (Speed Figure) and sheet numbers are going to be off the chart, Baffert said. There's no rush. I think that he's the kind of horse that, after what he did today, he could go into the Breeders' Cup fresh like (American) Pharaoh did. I don't think that's a big problem for him. I could change my plans, but right now I would say I would run him fresh into the Breeders Cup after a race like that. Big Chief Racing, Head of Plain Partners and Rocker O Ranch s Exaggerator led a long list of disappointments in the Travers, lumbering home a distant 11 th with no excuses as the 5-2 favorite. The son of 2007 Classic winner Curlin won the Santa Anita Derby (GI) in April and Win and You re In Haskell Invitational (GI) July 31 at Monmouth Park to gain an automatic berth into this year s Classic, but never delivered his customary late run, further fueling the lingering notion that he needs an off-track to fire his best shot. Trainer Keith Desormeaux indicated the Classic is still in the plans for Exaggerator, who will likely prep for the race in Park Racing s Pennsylvania Derby (GII) September 24. WinStar Farm s Creator, who won the Arkansas Derby (GI) at Oaklawn Park in April and Belmont for trainer Steve Asmussen, was an equally listless sixth and will be given the rest of the year off aim for a 4-year-old campaign. s Spinaway to Offer 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies Berth this Saturday on NBCSN Saturday s $350,000 Spinaway (GI) may be only a supporting feature on a card that features the Woodward (GI) and superstar Frosted (see below), but the $350,000 test for 2-year-old fillies takes on added significance, as it s the lone Win and You re In in the U.S. over the weekend, with the winner getting an automatic starting berth into the 14 Hands Winery Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Spinaway, along with the Woodward, will be telecast live on NBCSN as part of the "Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In presented by Lane's End Farm and America's Best Racing." Saturday s broadcast will air from 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET. The Spinaway, run at seven furlongs, could have a short field, with St. Elias Stable s SWEET LORETTA looming a short-priced favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher. The daughter of Tapit rallied boldly from off the pace to win the July 22 Opening Day featured Schuylerville (GIII) by a widening 4 ¼ lengths, a month after winning her debut by 7 lengths at Monmouth Park June 18. The main danger is likely to come from Bill Heiligbrodt s RUNWAY DOLL, who blitzed an overmatched field of maidens by 13 ½ lengths in her debut here in the slop July 31. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the daughter of Majestic Warrior is short on experience but long on talent and may need to be caught in a Spinaway that could also include John Oxley s PRETTY CITY DANCER, who is 2-for-3 lifetime for trainer Mark Casse and won Churchill Downs Debutante July 2. Local debut winner CHERRY LODGE could also start for Pletcher, as could FUN, who was a distant second in the Schuylerville for trainer Ian Wilkes. Frosted Back for More in Spa s Woodward Godolphin Stable s FROSTED, the undisputed leader of the East Coast s Classic division who already secured a berth into the Breeders Cup Classic with his win in the local Win and You re In Whitney (GI) August 6, will look to double up in Saturday s $600,000 Woodward. The 4-year-old son of Tapit has been simply stunning in his last two starts for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, as he earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders Cup Las Vegas Dirt Mile with a 14 ¼-length win in Belmont Park s Win and

3 You re In Metropolitan Handicap (GI) in June. Frosted is 6-for-17 lifetime and looms an odds-on favorite in what figures to be a compact field in the 1 1/8-mile Woodward. Joseph Sutton s BRADESTER will supply plenty of pace and, like Frosted, earned a berth into the Classic when he wired Churchill Downs Win and You re In Stephen Foster (GI) in June for trainer Eddie Kenneally. The 6-year-old son of Lion Heart prepped for the Woodward with a win in the Monmouth Cup (GII) July 31. CATHOLIC COWBOY, BREAKING LUCKY, MUBTAAHIJ, SAMRAAT and TALE OF VERVE are also expected for the Woodward. Turf Bids on the line at Baden Baden This week s international Win and You re In action takes place in Iffezheim, Germany at Baden Baden Racecourse, where a pair of challenge races the $270,271 Longines Grosser Preis Von Baden (GI) and T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis $75,662 (GII) will offer bids to the Longines Breeders Cup Turf and Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf, respectively. Sunday s Preis Von Baden, run at about 1 ½ miles for 3yos & up, is expected to be led by Australian Bloodstock Stable s PROTECTIONIST (GER), who is 3-for-3 this year and enters off a win in the Longines Grosser Preis Von Berlin (GI) at Hoppegarten August 14. The 6-year-old son of Monsun (GER), trained by Andreas Wohler, is 8-for-21 lifetime, which includes a victory in the historic Melbourne Cup (GI) at Flemington in Stall Nizza s NIGHTFLOWER (IRE), who was second in the Von Berlin, could give the favorite another try for trainer Peter Schiergen. The 4-year-old son of Dylan Thomas (IRE) won the Preis Von Europa (GI) last September at Cologne and is 2-for-12 lifetime. Saturday s T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis $75,662 (GII), run at about 1 ½ miles for fillies & mares, figures to draw a large field, with a Filly & Mare Turf bid on the line. Australian Bloodstock and Wohler will like have the favorite here too, with DOUBLE DREAM (FR), who won the listed Jubilaumspreis des Marzhan- Hellersdorfer August 13 at Hoppegarten, likely leading the way. News and Notes Tepin targeted for Win and You re In Ricoh Woodbine Mile Robert Masterson s Eclipse award winning Champion Female Turf Horse and defending Breeders Cup Mile winner TEPIN, unraced since winning defeating the best milers in the world in the Queen Anne (GI) at Royal Ascot in Great Britain June 14, is getting serious about returning to the races, as evidenced by her past two breezes over the turf course at the Oklahoma training track in. The 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein scalded the turf August 29, getting five furlongs in 58.44, her second consecutive bullet move, after drilling four furlongs in August 23. Tepin, trained by Mark Casse, has won her last seven starts in decisive fashion, including the First Lady (GI) and Breeders Cup Mile at Keeneland to end She s picked up right where she left off in 2016, winning all five starts, including the Jenny Wiley (GI) at Keeneland in April, but it was her win in the historic Queen Anne that added to her legend, as it was one of the biggest wins by an American on the international stage in history. Casse opted to back off on Tepin, who is 12-for-20 lifetime, passing on s Fourstardave (GI) and Ballston Spa (GII) this summer and instead aiming for the Win and You re In Woodbine Mile (GI) September 17, which gives him the best spacing moving forward. "Our next target is Woodbine but then we'll see," added Casse. "We have a couple of options. We could go to Keeneland and maybe run in the ( Win and You re In ) grade I Shadwell Mile (October 8) or just bypass and go straight to the Breeders Cup (Mile). I feel like this was another positive move forward so knock on wood."

Mark Hennig trained the winner, a 6-year-old daughter of Smart Strike who won her second graded stakes of the year, to go with Belmont Park s Beaugay (GIII) in May. Strike Charmer is now 6-for-21 lifetime and could be in line for a step up in class for her next start, which could come in Belmont s Flower Bowl (GI) October 8. Sheep Pond Partners Lady Eli saw her undefeated record end, but her first loss in seven career starts was of little consequence, considering she was fighting for her life last summer after stepping on a nail and getting a severe case of laminitis walking back to trainer Chad Brown s barn after winning the Belmont Oaks (GI) July 4. The 4-year-old daughter of Divine Park, who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita in 2014, made the front late in the Ballston Spa before tiring in deep stretch, but will surely benefit from the run. The 5-year-old daughter of Congrats was a stakes winner in the Midwest the past two years for trainer Alex Milligan before being privately purchased by Barber and Sequel Racing purchased in the spring and sent to trainer Tom Morley. The new partnership has worked to aplomb, with Haveyougoneaway winning 3-of-4, including the local prep, the Honorable Miss (GII) July 27. Haveyougoneaway is now 11-for-26 lifetime and has her trainer thinking about how to get her to Santa Anita and have a fresh horse later this fall. "Now obviously we'll have to plot our route to California carefully, Morley said. She's run three times in pretty quick succession. She ran at the back end of Belmont and won a stake (the Dancin Renee for New York breds July 3), came up here and won opening week and then came back and won the Ballerina in just under four weeks. She's had three big efforts in relatively quick succession, so we might just train up to the Breeders' Cup. There's not much else for her to run in this year. Ron Ellis trained the winner, a 6-year-old son of Sought After who was making just his second start of the year after winning a conditioned allowance at Santa Anita July 8. Masochistic opened 2015 with three straight dominant wins, including the Triple Bend (GI) at Santa Anita in June, then lost his last three starts, including running last-of-14 in the TwinSpires Breeders Cup Sprint at Keeneland. Ellis regrouped this year on Masochistic, who is now 8-for-13 lifetime, and indicated he ll cut his star back and aim for the Breeders Cup TwinSpires Sprint after taking the less is more approach. He disappointed at this track last year at low odds (second in the grade I Bing Crosby at 2-5) but this year he s a different horse, Ellis said. Last year he just wanted to run as fast and as far as he could. This year he s really conserving his energy and I think he can go even farther.
