In 2015, the meeting was held at Keeneland, where Aidan O'Brien achieved a double with Hit It A Bomb (in the Juvenile Turf, on the Friday) and Found (in the Turf). The last British-trained winners were in also at Santa Anita - when London Bridge, Outstrip, Chriselliam and Dank were all victorious. The most successful trainer overall in the last two years has been Chad Brown, who has achieved a double on the Saturday on both occasions, with Bobby's Kitten and Dayatthespa in 2014, and Wavell Avenue and Stephanie's Kitten in 2015.The meeting will be held at Del Mar for the first time in The oval dirt track is one mile round with a run-in of 330 yards; the inner turf course is about seven furlongs in length, though races over six and a half furlongs, a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half start on a chute which runs downhill and crosses the dirt track. 5

6 The 2013 winner Dank was the last European to triumph in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Filly & Mare Turf Considering this is one of the races in which the European raiders should excel, it s interesting that fillies and mares trained in North America have won five of the last six renewals. Three of those winners were trained by Chad Brown, and he s back for more with the 2014 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Lady Eli and Sea Calisi Lady Eli has only been beaten once from eight starts and is currently favorite, but can she beat Seventh Heaven from Ballydoyle or Japan s Nuovo Record? Seventh Heaven tops the Timeform ratings based on her win in the Yorkshire Oaks at York in August, when she defeated subsequent Prix de l Arc de Triomphe winner Found and Queen s Trust. That came on the back of Seventh Heavens two and three-quarter lengths success in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh, and she can be forgiven a below-par effort (met trouble) when only fifth in the Fillies And Mares Stakes at Ascot last time. Seventh Heaven has proven a strong 6 A Timeform Guide To The Breeders' Cup Meeting 2016 stayer over a mile and a half, though, and may not be best suited by this drop to 10 furlongs. The aforementioned Queen s Trust has run with credit on all five of her outings this year, finishing third in both the Yorkshire Oaks (four lengths behind Seventh Heaven) and Fillies And Mares Stakes (two places ahead of the unlucky Seventh Heaven) on her last two. She remains with potential and won t be hindered by the drop back to this trip, while she comes from the

7 BREEDERS' CUP Sir Michael Stoute yard that won this race with Islington in 2003 and Dank in Lady Eli was unbeaten throughout her twoand three-year-old years, but she wasn t seen again after winning the Belmont Oaks in July 2015 until her return in a Grade 2 at Saratoga in late- August. She was beaten by a big outsider there, but the extended mile trip was probably on the short side for her and she resumed winning ways in the 10-furlong Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont last month. She holds solid claims here. Lady Eli s stable-companion Sea Calisi is not out of things, either. This ex-french filly made a winning debut for Chad Brown in May and also added the Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington to her CV in August, beating Al s Gal and Zipessa. She proved as good as ever when two lengths third to Lady Eli in the Flower Bowl (Sentiero Italia in between the pair) last time. Nuovo Record produced two good runnerup efforts in Group 1s last winter, including in the Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin. That effort, when chasing home A Shin Hikari, was a clear career best on ratings, but she s not come close to repeating it in three starts this time around, albeit taking a step back in the right direction when fourth in a Grade 2 over two months ago. Photo Call caused an upset when beating Tepin in the First Lady Stakes over a mile at Keeneland last time. She was seen to maximum advantage there, however, with her rider making full use of her stamina (has won over this C&D) by putting her into a commanding lead from an early stage, and the circumstances may not prove as favorable here. Seventh Heaven sets the standard, but a sharp mile and a quarter could catch her out, while Nuovo Record s runner-up effort in the Hong Kong Cup is becoming a standout on her overall record. Lady Eli looks a sound favorite, but it could still pay to side with Queen s Trust instead given she also represents a yard that knows how to win this race and remains with potential. 8 Texas Red won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last year Juvenile The Breeders Cup Juvenile was won last year by Doug O Neill s Nyquist, providing the trainer with his second win in the contest following Stevie Wonderboy s 2005 success. However, O Neill is still three shy of D. Wayne Lukas record of five Juvenile wins which represents a quarter of his 20 Breeders Cup victories. This year s Juvenile is one of the most competitive events of the two-day meeting, with British bookmakers struggling to separate four horses at the head of the betting Gormley is one of that quartet, with John Shirreffs unbeaten son of Malibu Moon searching for a third win. He won a maiden at Del Mar in September and followed up in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes over this C&D last time by 8 A Timeform Guide To The Breeders' Cup Meeting 2016 three lengths from Klimt, making all and keeping on well. He should improve further and looks a major contender. Bob Baffert s Klimt came into that race with a big reputation following two victories at Del Mar the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes

9 BREEDERS' CUP in August and the Del Mar Futurity in September but he produced a rather labored effort, one paced after making headway on the home turn. He has something to prove all of a sudden. The Canadian-trained Classic Empire is the only non-us runner in the field, and Mark Casse s charge might have been unbeaten in four starts but for unseating at the start in the Hopeful Stakes (won by Practical Joke) in September. He won a maiden at Churchill Downs in May and the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at the same course in July, and following that hiccup at Saratoga, was soon back on track when winning the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders Futurity at Keeneland last time by three lengths from Lookin At Lee. The last-named had been eight and a half lengths behind Not This Time when the pair clashed in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs in September, and it is the latternamed who looks the more potent threat here, despite the step up in class. Dale Romans charge had also won his maiden at Ellis Park by a wide margin and clearly stays this trip well. Two other horses who will lock horns again are Practical Joke and Syndergaard. Chad Brown s unbeaten Practical Joke completed his hat-trick in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont last time by a nose from Syndergaard (pair clear), coming off a strong pace after a slow start. Todd Pletcher s Syndergaard was chasing his own treble there, but was just unable to sustain the strong pace he set, still not going down without a fight. His stablemate Theory is a half-brother to a winner over four and a half furlongs, but his dam is also from the family of Breeders Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller. Theory showed smart form when following up his Saratoga maiden win in the Grade 3 Futurity Stakes at Belmont last time by three and a half lengths from Star Empire and shapes as though he ll be suited by this longer distance. The field is completed by Jose Pinchin s Three Rules who is unbeaten in five starts at Gulfstream between June and October and outsider Term of Art, the sole representative of Doug O Neill. In summary, there is very little between half a dozen of these on Timeform ratings. Preference is for Not This Time who should be suited by the run of the race if Gormley and Syndergaard put the pedal to the metal in the early stages. 10 Found beating Golden Horn in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Turf Turf Of all the races at the Breeders Cup, the Turf has always been the one in which the European horses have shone, and that is no surprise given that it is a mile-and-a-half event run on, well, turf. Saeed bin Suroor, Brian Meehan and Sir Michael Stoute have all won the race for Britain in recent years, taking six renewals between them since the turn of the century, while Aidan O Brien has nearly matched that total on his own during the same time period, with his five winners including Found in 2015 After some deliberation about her Breeders Cup target (connections had mentioned a tilt at the Classic instead of this race) last year s winner Found now looks set to attempt to defend her title. A remarkably tough and consistent filly, Found has taken in Group 1 races on her last seven starts and has not finished out of the first two once. Those collection of races include her best effort on Timeform ratings to date, which is her win in the Prix de l Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on her penultimate start, and if she is 10 A Timeform Guide To The Breeders' Cup Meeting 2016 able to run to that sort of level again after a long season, she will take some beating. Aidan O Brien saddled the first three home in the Arc, with Highland Reel and Order of St George chasing home Found, and the former will complete a very strong challenge for the trainer in this year s Turf. Before his Arc second, Highland Reel had already proven himself as a high-class globetrotter with wins in the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington and the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin in 2015, and he is likely to be on the premises once

11 BREEDERS' CUP again, with his versatility regarding tactics (made all in the Hong Kong Vase and did the same in this season s King George at Ascot) sure to stand him in good stead in a race lacking obvious pace. The horse that Highland Reel beat into second in the 2015 Hong Kong Vase was Flintshire, then trained by Andre Fabre in France. That was Flintshire s last start for Fabre, as he was then transferred by owner Juddmonte Farms to Chad Brown in America. Flintshire, who finished a half-length second to Main Sequence in this race in 2014, has seemingly added a new dimension to his game during his time with Brown, namely a potent turn of foot, which he used to convincingly seal the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga in August (from the re-opposing Money Multiplier), landing his second top-level win for his new trainer in his first three starts. It would be unwise to take Flintshire s five-length defeat by Ectot another ex-french trained horse now plying his trade in the US in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic last time at face value given the soft ground at Belmont that day, and Flintshire is expected to prove a different prospect back on firm ground at Santa Anita on Saturday. Despite Ectot s shock defeat of Flintshire last time, there is something of a gulf between the front trio in the market (and the Timeform ratings) and the rest of the field. Mondialiste is a dual Grade 1 winner on North American soil for David O Meara, having added this year s Arlington Million to the Woodbine Mile that he won in 2015, but even that top-level form falls short of the best on offer here. Sir Michael Stoute runs Ulysses who was sent off at just 8/1 for the Derby earlier this season following just a maiden win. While he could finish only twelfth at Epsom, he bounced back to win a Goodwood Group 3 in July. He was beaten at odds-on at Windsor next time and will need to step up plenty to go close here, but he s clearly highly regarded and cannot be ruled out. The wonderfully tough and reliable Found heads the weight-adjusted Timeform ratings and is sure to give her all once again, but slight preference is for Flintshire. He s had this race in which he was second in 2014 on his radar all season for his new trainer Chad Brown. Highland Reel provides Aidan O Brien with an excellent second string, while Ulysses is most interesting among those at long odds. 12 Tepin beating Mondialiste in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile Mile The Mile has a habit of producing horses who win the race more than once, with Lure, Da Hoss, Goldikova (three wins) and Wise Dan all achieving the feat in the last 20 years. Tepin proved two and a quarter lengths too good for British raider Mondialiste in the 2015 renewal and will bid to add her name to that list, but she did meet with her first defeat in nine starts in the First Lady Stakes last month. Can the popular mare fend off another strong entry from Europe? Canada s Tepin has made a deep impression on the North American racing scene over the last 18 months, winning the Just A Game Stakes and First Lady Stakes as well as this race last year, and she s spread her wings even further this time around. After winning her first four outings of 2016, Tepin beat a number of Europe s best milers 12 A Timeform Guide To The Breeders' Cup Meeting 2016 when winning the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Tepin completed the eight-timer in the Woodbine Mile in September and, while she was beaten by Photo Call in the latest First Lady Stakes last time, she simply allowed the winner far too much rope. She should bounce back here.

13 BREEDERS' CUP Two horses that Tepin didn t face in the Queen Anne, however, are Limato and Alice Springs. Limato is extremely versatile, winning Group 1s over six furlongs (July Cup at Newmarket) and seven furlongs (Prix de la Foret at Chantilly) this year after starting his campaign in the Lockinge Stakes over a mile. He finished only fourth that day, in a race won by Belardo (who would finish second to Tepin in the Queen Anne), but lack of fitness was as likely an explanation as lack of stamina and he s certainly worth another try at this trip, especially on a sharp track. Alice Springs has really flourished in the second half of the year, winning the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and Sun Chariot Stakes back at Newmarket (all Group 1s against fellow fillies and mares) from her last four starts. She s a danger to all here as she bids to give her connections their first respective wins in this race. Alice Springs stablemates Cougar Mountain and Hit It A Bomb both have something to find on form, but the latter won the Juvenile Turf last year and may have had this race as his big target all along this season; he could outrun long odds. The other European challengers are Britain s Dutch Connection, a similar type to Limato (strong traveler who is effective over shorter distances but stays this far) though seemingly not quite as good, and German filly Spectre who is gradually getting better by the run (second in the Prix du Moulin last time) but needs to find another chunk of improvement. Miss Temple City, Ironicus and Tourist had just three quarters of a length between them when first, second and third in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland last month. Given that was a tactical race, those placings are not guaranteed to be upheld in this race. Either way, all three need to improve against the big three, as do the other home-trained runners Midnight Storm, What A View and Ring Weekend. Tepin is bound to go close in her own back yard, so to speak, but she faces her toughest rival yet on Timeform ratings in the shape of Limato, who is taken to just come out on top. Alice Springs looks comfortably the best of the rest, though Hit It A Bomb is put forward as an outsider who may outrun long odds. 14 American Pharoah saunters clear in last year s Breeders Cup Classic Classic The Classic may be missing a European representative this time round, but the best horse in the world on Timeform ratings, California Chrome, will be in attendance and attempting to become the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Dubai World Cup and Classic. He is unlikely to have things all his own way, though, with top-class rivals Arrogate and Frosted doing their best to prevent a popular success and the 2016 renewal of this $6 million contest has all the makings of a race to remember California Chrome showed flashes of brilliance in his three- and four-year-old years, but has proved better than ever in 2016 and completed the six-timer with a stunning victory in the Awesome Again Stakes at this track last month. That represented arguably the best effort of his career to date, never out of second gear despite being pressed into fast fractions by the high-class Dortmund, and he had more in hand than the official winning margin would suggest (heavily eased close home). California Chrome is 14 A Timeform Guide To The Breeders' Cup Meeting 2016 likely to face competition for the lead again here, but those that challenge him do so at their own risk and he sets an exacting standard on form. Nevertheless, Frosted is a top performer in his own right and produced his best effort when running out a wide-margin winner of the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont in June. That performance did come over a mile, however, and while he does have form over further, including when winning the nine-furlong Whitney Stakes at Saratoga in August, eight furlongs may prove

15 BREEDERS' CUP his best trip these days. Frosted was also only five and a half lengths fifth to California Chrome in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan in March. Three-year-old Arrogate was a pillar-to-post winner of his most recent outing in the Travers Stakes over this distance at Saratoga in August. He enjoyed the run of the race from the front end that day, but he still broke the long-standing course record as he won by 13 and a half lengths. He s open to more improvement after just five starts and should be on the premises provided that latest effort hasn t taken too much out of him. Arrogate s trainer Bob Baffert saddled the brilliant American Pharoah to win this race last year and that form is represented by Effinex here. He produced a high-class level of form when second that day and has proved consistent for the most part since. He has had his limitations at this level exposed on numerous occasions, though, including when fourth to Frosted in the Whitney. Hoppertunity and Melatonin bring similar form lines into this race, and the former had Effinex a half-length behind when winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont last time. Melatonin showed improved form when successful on his most recent outing in the Santa Anita Stakes over this C&D (Hoppertunity fourth) and could snatch a place. Keen Ice will go down in history as the only horse to have beaten American Pharoah in his brilliant three-year-old campaign, running him down late on in the 2015 Travers. He has been below that form in four starts this year, however, and is passed over, while Shaman Ghost was arguably flattered when landing the Woodward Stakes (Frosted a close third) at Saratoga in September. Win The Space and War Story complete the field, but have shown little to suggest they can be involved in the finish. It would be a major surprise if this race wasn t won by one of the first three in the market. Frosted and Arrogate both have plenty to recommend them, but it is hard to escape from the consistent brilliance of California Chrome. He has swept all before him in a terrific five-yearold season up to this point and should prove extremely difficult to beat if at this best here, with Melatonin a possible placegetter at long odds. 16 12.05 JUVENILE FILLIES 1m 110yds Union Strike, a daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes last time despite her rider dropping his whip. She has left Shelbe Ruis since but looks sure to be suited by this extended mile on her first start for Craig Dollase. Noted and Quoted was only fourth to Union Strike at Del Mar but she produced her best effort yet when winning the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita last time by half a length from With Honors. The China Horse Club-owned Yellow Agate won the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes last time and should do better still, while Darley Alcibiades Stakes winner Dancing Rags is from the family of Breeders Cup Distaff winner Jewel Princess, so it s no surprise that she has improved since stepping up in trip. Bob Baffert s charge has won all four starts since his debut, including two optional claimers here and the Grade 1 King s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga in August, and is likely to improve further. His more experienced stablemate Lord Nelson narrowly tops the Timeform ratings after his Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes success last month, while winning machine A. P. Indian has been much improved this year, winning all six of his starts, and he rates a big threat. Masochistic was last of 14 in last year s renewal at Keeneland but has won both outings this season, most recently in the Grade 2 Pat O Brien Stakes at Del Mar in August.. 17 BREEDERS' CUP TURF SPRINT 6f 110yds Washington DC is the pick of the European challengers and can gain his first Grade1/Group 1 win at the sixth time of asking in such races. Aidan O Brien s charge shaped very well when second to Marsha in the Prix de l Abbaye at Chantilly (Suedois third) last time, nearest at the finish after being left with too much to do, and the return to this sort of trip should suit him. Hopefully he fares better than his sire Zoffany who was last in the Mile in 2011! Home of The Brave runs in this rather than the Mile but will face stiff competition for the lead from a strong home challenge of Pure Sensation, Obviously and last year s winner Mongolian Saturday. The last-named struggled in top sprints in Hong Kong and Britain earlier this year but bounced back to form when winning the Grade 3 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland last month. Her runner-up effort behind Distaff favorite Songbird in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx is strong form and she can turn the tables on Haveyougoneaway, whom she chased home in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes in August. Haveyougoneaway has had a new lease of life since joining Thomas Morley four starts ago and is respected, along with Chad Brown s Wavell Avenue who won this race 12 months ago, though her form since has been rather hit-andmiss. COMBINATION TRIFECTA* Again this is similar to a boxed exacta and if any of the horses you select (3 and up) finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd you win.
