September 20, 2016 Contact: Jim Gluckson Countdown to the Breeders Cup World Championships Newsletter Advisory: This is the sixth of nine weekly news releases focusing on the horses and races leading to the 33 rd Breeders Cup World Championships on Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5 at Santa Anita. For more information, please visit The Breeders Cup will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network. You can follow all the contenders activity leading up to the Breeders Cup with Equibase s free Road to the Breeders Cup Virtual Stable notification service. California Chrome Casts Daunting Shadow Over Prospective Field for Breeders Cup Classic Field While equine stars near and far will descend on Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California November 4-5 for the 33 rd Breeders Cup, there s little doubt that the main attraction figures to be CALIFORNIA CHROME, who rates as an imposing favorite for the $6 million Breeders Cup Classic, which is a little less than seven weeks away. The Classic headlines 13 Breeders Cup races that are spread out over two days, totaling $28 million in purses and undoubtedly crowning champions in several divisions. California Chrome, a 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit, who is owned by California Chrome LLC, a group comprised of Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm, has shown this year what a horse can do when allowed to grow into himself and reach his physical peak. The results have been nothing short of extraordinary, as the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is perfect in five starts for trainer Art Sherman, including a tour-de-force in the Win and You re In TVG Pacific Classic (GI) at Del Mar August 20, and rates as an odds-on favorite for Horse of the Year. California Chrome earned an automatic Classic berth in the Pacific Classic, while moving his lifetime record to 14-for-23, which includes a win in the Dubai World Cup (GI) at Meydan in March. He ll look to add to his North American record of $13.2 million in earnings when he starts next in Santa Anita s October 1 Win and You re In Awesome Again (GI), which will award the sixth of seven automatic starting berths into the Classic. NBCSN (5:30-8 p.m. ET) will televise the Awesome Again, and other top qualifying races next Saturday, as a part of the Breeders Cup Challenge Series: Win and You re In Presented by Lane s End Farm and America s Best Racing program. Godolphin s homebred FROSTED saw his quest for championship honors take a big hit when he was a modest third at odds-on in Saratoga s Woodward (GI) September 3 for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, but he already has a Classic berth secured via his win in Saratoga s Win and You re In Whitney (GI) August 6. The 4-year-old son of Tapit earned a berth into the Breeders Cup Las Vegas Dirt Mile when he won
Belmont Park s Metropolitan Handicap (GI) by 14 ¼ lengths in May and could potentially reroute to that race. Frosted is 6-for-18 lifetime and will very likely train up to the Breeders Cup McLaughlin said this week. Tarabilla Farm s MELATONIN will also likely take the road less traveled to the Classic, as the 5-year-old son of Kodiak Kowboy has not started since earning a berth into the race with a win in the Win and You re In Gold Cup at Santa Anita (GI) June 25. Trainer David Hofmans, who won the Classic in 1996 at Woodbine with Alphabet Soup, indicated Melatonin, who missed some training due to an illness over the summer, would not be ready for the Awesome Again and may have to run in the Classic off works. Melatonin also won the Santa Anita Handicap (GI) in March and is 5-for-13 lifetime. Kaleem Shah s DORTMUND, who was second, beaten just a half-length by California Chrome in Del Mar s San Diego (GII) in July, but was a distant third to him in the Pacific Classic for trainer Bob Baffert; Tri-Bone Stable s EFFINEX, second in the Classic last year behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah for trainer Jimmy Jerkens and a two-time grade II winner this year, and stablemate SHAMAN GHOST, a Stronach Stable homebred who upset Frosted in winning the Woodward, are also pointing to the Breeders Cup Classic. Arrogate Gives 3-year-olds a Boost While the 3-year-olds took turns beating each other during the three Triple Crown races, Juddmonte Farm s ARROGATE S record-breaking win in Saratoga s Travers (GI) August 27 stamped him as the now horse and a legitimate threat to California Chrome, not only on the front end, but in the winner s circle. Trained by Bob Baffert, the son of Unbridled s Song wired the Travers in 1:59.36, shattering a track record that was set in Arrogate, who is 4-for-5 lifetime, is expected to train up to the Classic. Paul Reddam s Kentucky Derby winner NYQUIST and Big Chief Racing, Head of Plains Partners and Rocker O Ranch s EXAGGERATOR will look to get untracked in Saturday s Pennsylvania Derby (GII, see preview below) at Parx Racing after disappointing recent runs. The former, a son of 2010 Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo, was fourth in both the Preakness and Win and You re In Haskell Invitational (GI) at Monmouth Park in his last start July 31 for trainer Doug O Neill, and will look to find the form that won him his first eight career starts, including the Florida Derby (GI) at Gulfstream Park in April, in addition to a 2-year-old championship that was cemented with a win in the Sentient Jet Breeders Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in October. Exaggerator, a son of 2007 Classic winner Curlin, earned a Classic berth with his Haskell win, and also won the Santa Anita Derby (GI) in April, but was 11 th in the Travers, further fueling speculation that he needs a off-track, like he got in the in all three grade I wins this year, to run his best race. Distaff Could be One for the Ages The prospect of BEHOLDER and CAVORTING, the two best older fillies and mares in the country, taking on undefeated 3-year-old sensation SONGBIRD, has the Longines Breeders Cup Distaff shaping up as one of the most anticipated renewals in the race s history. Throw in older grade I winners STELLAR WIND, CURALINA, FOREVER UNBRIDLED and 3-year-old CATHRYN SOPHIA, and the Distaff is shaping up as a can t-miss race. Spendthrift Farm s Beholder will look to win her third Breeders Cup race, whether she takes the likely path and runs in the Distaff, or surprises and runs in the Classic for trainer Richard Mandella. The 6-yearold daughter of Henny Hughes has been at the top of her class since winning the 2012 Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, the same spot where she annexed the Distaff a year later. Beholder, who is 17-for-24 lifetime in a Hall of Fame career, will look to stop a rare two-race losing streak, including a second to California Chrome in the Win and You re In Pacific Classic at Del Mar August 20, when she tries to earn and automatic starting berth into the Distaff and win the Win and You re In Zenyatta (GI) for the fourth straight year at Santa Anita October 1.
Stonestreet Stable s Cavorting is arguably the clubhouse divisional leader off three straight wins, including two in a row in Win and You re Ins for the Distaff in Belmont Park s Ogden Phipps (GI) in June and Saratoga s Personal Ensign (GI) in her last start August 27. The 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini is 8-for-13 lifetime for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and showed a new dimension when she won the Personal Ensign in her first start at two turns and at the Distaff s 1 1/8-mile distance. Fox Hill Farms Songbird has barely lifted a hair in winning her 10 career starts by a combined 54 ¾ lengths for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and the daughter of Medaglia d Oro will look to pull off a Beholderlike double, as she won the Juvenile Fillies last year at Keeneland en route to championship honors. Songbird, who summered in Saratoga and won the Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) in July and the Alabama (GI) in her last start August 20, will look to continued her streak in Saturday s Cotillion (GI, see race preview below) at Parx Racing. Hronis Racing s Stellar Wind, who won the 3-year-old filly championship after running second in last year s Distaff at Keeneland and beat Beholder to earn a Distaff berth in the Win and You re In Clement Hirsch (GI) at Del Mar July 30 for trainer John Sadler; Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners Curalina, who won Churchill Downs La Troienne (GI) in May for trainer Todd Pletcher, Charles Fipke s homebred Forever Unbridled, who won Oaklawn Park s Apple Blossom (GI) in April and was a close third in the Personal Ensign for trainer Dallas Stewart and Cathryn Sophia, who won the Kentucky Oaks (GI) in May at Churchill Downs and will tackle Songbird in the Cotillion for trainer John Servis, are also prospective starters for the Longines Breeders Cup Distaff. Euro Transplant Flintshire Leads American Turf Hopes, Tepin Again Looms Large in Mile Juddmonte Farm s homebred FLINTSHIRE (GB), who began his career in Europe, has blossomed in America with trainer Chad Brown and is the clear-cut divisional leader as the Longines Breeders Cup Turf nears. The 6-year-old son of Dansili (GB) was trained by Andre Fabre before coming to Brown this season and is 3-for-2 in 2016, including easy wins in Belmont Park s Manhattan (GI) in June and Saratoga s Win and You re In Sword Dander (GI) in his last start August 27, which netted him an automatic starting berth into the Turf, a race he ran second in at Santa Anita in Flintshire is 8-for-22 lifetime and will prep for the Turf in another automatic qualifier, Belmont s Win and You re In Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (GI) October 1. Who comes from Europe will likely be sorted out after their late-season championship races are run, but Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum s POSTPONED (IRE), regarded as the best turf horse in the world by many, has been mentioned as possible, even though his main goal is the Prix de l Arc de Triomphe (GI), to be run this year at Chantilly October 2. The 5-year-old son of Dubawi (IRE) already earned an automatic berth into the Turf with his win in the Win and You re In Juddmonte International (GI) August 17 at York for trainer Roger Varian and is 9-for-17 lifetime. Defending Longines Breeders Cup Turf winner FOUND (IRE) could be rounding into form after her close second place finish to Almanzor (FR) in the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes (G1) on September 10 for trainer Aidan O Brien. Other overseas possibilities include Carrot Farm s 5-year-old mare MARIALITE (JPN), who qualified for the Longines Turf by winning the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) at Hanshin in June, and from South America Haras Doce Vale s 4- year-old MY CHERIE AMOUR (BRZ), who won the Gran Premio Brasil (G1) at Gavea this spring. Robert Masterson s TEPIN, who dominated last year s Breeders Cup Mile, is once again the horse to beat this year for trainer Mark Casse. The 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein earned a berth into the race with her win in Saturday s Win and You re In Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI, see race recap below), which was her eighth straight for trainer Mark Casse. Tepin has been unbeatable over the past year, a streak which includes a historic win in Royal Ascot s Queen Anne (GI) in June and her resume and 13-for-21 career record will have her as one of the shortest-priced favorites on the two-day Breeders Cup card. She ll likely prep for this year s Mile October 8 at Keeneland, in either the First Lady (GI) or Win and You re In Shadwell Turf Mile, which is another automatic qualifier for the Mile. Geoff and Sandra Turnbull s MONDIALISTE (IRE) will certainly be Breeders Cup-bound, it s just which race he ll run in is the question. The 6-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) won last year s Win and You re In
Woodbine Mile (GI) and was then second in the Breeders Cup Mile to Tepin at Keeneland but already earned a Turf berth with his win in the Win and You re In Arlington Million (GI) in his last start August 13 for trainer David O Meara. Mondialiste is 5-for-21 lifetime and could try Tepin again in this year s Mile, or try and stretch out to 1 ½ miles in the Turf. Stuart Janney s homebred IRONICUS, who was a good second to Flintshire in the Manhattan and is expected for the Shadwell Turf Mile for trainer Shug McGaughey and Venerri Racing and Little Red Feather Racing s MIDNIGHT STORM, who won a Mile bid with his win in Santa Anita s Win and You re In Shoemaker Mile (GI) in June for trainer Phil D Amato, are also viable contenders for the Mile. Global Runners in the Mix for Filly & Mare Turf The $2 million Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf could be full of international intrigue this year with the addition of South African star Mauritzfontien Ltd s SMART CALL (SAF), who qualified for this race back in January, when the 5-year-old daughter of Ideal World captured the Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes (G1) at Kenilworth. Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor s 3-year-old ALICE SPRINGS (IRE) was a dominating winner of the Fastnet Rock Coolmore Stakes (G1) at Leopardstown a week ago for trainer Aidan O Brien. Alice Springs is also under consideration for the Breeders Cup Mile. Gary Barber, Michael James Ambler and Windways Farm s CATCH A GLIMPSE, last year s Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, had her eight race winning streak on turf stopped when she was second by a neck to TIME AND MOTION in the Lake Placid Stakes (G2) at Saratoga last month. Juveniles Still Sorting Themselves Out The race for the Sentient Breeders Cup Juvenile and the 14 Hands Winery Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies will heat up over the next month, with no fewer than six challenge races looming, three for each division. Albaugh Family Stable s homebred NOT THIS TIME and Normandy Farm s homebred DADDYS LIL DARLING earned automatic berths Saturday with wins in a pair of Win and You re In races at Churchill Downs in the Iroquois (GIII) and Pocahontas (GII), respectively (see race recaps below), for trainers Dale Romans and Kenny McPeek. Trainer Bob Baffert holds all the aces out west, with Kaleem Shah s KLIMT, a son of Quality Road who is 3-for-4 lifetime, including a win in the Del Mar Futurity (GI) September 5. He ll likely be a short-priced favorite when he starts next in Santa Anita s October 1 FrontRunner (GI), which is a Win and You re In for the Juvenile. Klaravich Stable and Bill Lawrence s PRACTICAL JOKE won Saratoga s Hopeful (GI) September 5 for trainer Chad Brown to go 2-for-2 lifetime and the son of Into Mischief is expected for Belmont Park s October 8 Champagne (GI), another Win and You re In for the Juvenile, where he could meet Eric Fein s freakishly fast SYNDERGAARD, who is 2-for-2 against New York breds for trainer Todd Pletcher. The 2-year-old fillies are even more unsettled, as UNION STRIKE upset the Del Mar Debutante (GI) September 3 over American Pharoah s sister AMERICAN CLEOPATRA, and they ll meet again in Santa Anita s Win and You re In Chandelier (GI) October 1. On the East Coast, PRETTY CITY DANCER and SWEET LORETTA dead-heated for the win in Saratoga s Spinaway (GI) September 3 and could tangle again in Keeneland s Win and You re In Alcibiades (GI) October 7. Both races will award a berths into the Juvenile Fillies. Parx s Cotillion, Pennsylvania Derby Loaded With Talent All eyes will be on Parx Racing Saturday, when they run the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (GII) for 3- year-olds and $1 million Cotillion (GI) for 3-year-old fillies, as both races have several of the divisional leaders. Run at 1 1/8 miles, the Pennsylvania Derby is shaping up as a rematch between Paul Reddam s Kentucky Derby winner NYQUIST and Big Chief Racing, Head of Plains Partners and Rocker O Ranch s Preakness winner EXAGGERATOR.
Nyquist, a son of 2010 Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo won his first eight starts for trainer Doug O Neill, including last year s Sentient Jet Breeders Cup Juvenile at Keeneland, en route to a 2-year-old championship, but has lost his last two to Exaggerator as he ran third in both the Preakness and fourth in the Win and You re In Haskell (GI) July 31 at Monmouth Park. Exaggerator earned an automatic berth into the Breeders Cup Classic with his Haskell win for trainer Keith Desormeaux but will have to make amends for an 11 th -place finish in Saratoga s Travers (GI) August 27. The Pennsylvania Derby will be far from a two-horse field though, as Coolmore s CUPID, who has won back-to-back grade II s in the Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand in July and West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park August 6 for trainer Bob Baffert, and Winchell Thoroughbreds GUN RUNNER, who won the Louisiana Derby (GII) and was third in the Derby and Travers for trainer Steve Asmussen, offering up stiff competition. The Pennsylvania Derby field, with riders, in post-position order: Awesome Slew (Paco Lopez); Exaggerator (Kent Desormeaux); Summer Revolution (M. Smith); Connect (J. Castellano); Cupid (Rafael Bejarano); Wild About Deb (Tiago Pereira); Gun Runner (Florent Geroux); My Man Sam (J. Leparoux); Nyquist (M. Gutierrez); Sunny Ridge (Joe Bravo); Discreet Lover (Jose Flores); and Hit It Once More (Kendrick Carmouche). Fox Hill Farm s undefeated champion SONGBIRD could face her stiffest test yet in the 1 1/16-mile Cotillion, as she s scheduled to meet Cash is King s Kentucky Oaks (GI) winner CATHRYN SOPHIA. The former, a daughter of Medaglia d Oro, won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland last year and has kept things going this year, as she s moved her lifetime mark to 10-for-10 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The latter, a daughter of Street Boss, is 6-for-8 lifetime for trainer John Servis and owns a homecourt edge, as she s 2-for-2 at Parx. Three Chimneys Farm s CARINA MIA was even with Songbird off the far turn in Saratoga s Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) in July before coming home a wellbeaten second, but won Belmont Park s Acorn (GI) over Cathryn Sophia in June for trainer Bill Mott. The Cotillion field, with riders, in post-position order: Carina Mia (Julien Leparoux); Cathryn Sophia (Javier Castellano); Disco Rose (Edwin Rivera); Land Over Sea (Mario Gutierrez); Songbird (Mike Smith); and Queena Esther (Carol Cedeno). Newmarket to Host Pair of Juvenile Turf Challenge Races The weekend Win and You re In action will take place in the United Kingdom at Newmarket, with Friday s $147,000 Shadwell Rockfel and Saturday s $147,000 Juddmonte Royal Lodge offering up automatic berths into the $1 million Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and $1 million Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, respectively. Run at seven furlongs, the Rockfel is expected to be led by Juddmonte Farm s homebred FAIR EVA (GB), a daughter of Frankel (GB) who is 2-for-3 lifetime for trainer Roger Charlton, including a win in the Juddmonte (GIII) at Ascot in July. Coolmore s PROMISE TO BE TRUE (IRE), who won the Silver Flash (GIII) at Leopardstown in July for trainer Aidan O Brien could prove the biggest challenge in a Shadwell Rockfel field that could also include BRAVE ANNA, KILMAH (GB), NATIONS ALEXANDER (IRE) and ROLY POLY. Saturday s brother race to the Rockfel, the seven-furlong Royal Lodge, could have as many as nine from Coolmore and O Brien, with CAPRI (IRE) leading the way. The son of Galileo (IRE) is 2-for-3 lifetime and enters off a listed stakes win at Tipperary August 5. Capri heads his team this time around. DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (IRE), EXEMPLAR (IRE), LATIN BEAT (IRE), TAJ MAHAL (IRE), THE ANVIL (IRE), UTAH (IRE), WHITECLIFFSOFDOVER and YUCATAN (IRE) are other potential entries for O Brien. Godolphin could have two entered for trainer Charlie Appleby in BAY OF POETS (IRE) and D BAI (IRE), while BEAR
VALLEY (IRE), KINGS GIFT (IRE), LARCHMONT LAD (IRE), SEA FOX (IRE) and ULTIMATE AVEUNE (IRE) could also run in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge. 8 Finishing Order: $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI), 3yos & up, 1-mile (turf) BREEDERS CUP CHALLENGE RACE Woodbine 1 TEPIN, 2 TOWER OF TEXAS, 3 MUTAKAYYEF (GB) Half, neck, ¾ FULL MAST, AROD (IRE), MR. OWEN, GLENVILLE GARDENS, PASSION FOR ACTION Owner: Robert Masterson; Trainer: Mark Casse; Jockey: Julien Leparoux. 1:34.13 (good) Countdown to the Breeders Cup Mile Robert Masterson s TEPIN (Julien Leparoux) added the $1 million Win and You re In Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) to her Hall of Fame resume when she held off TOWER OF TEXAS late charge by a half-length, and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders Cup Mile as a result. Mark Casse trained the winner, a 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein who is now a grade I winner in her third different county, adding Canada to a list that also includes the United States and the United Kingdom as well. Tepin, who won last year s Breeders Cup Mile at Keeneland, took her legend to another level when she won Royal Ascot s prestigious Queen Anne (GI) in her last start June 14, in what was arguably the most significant accomplishment all-time by an American-trained horse in Europe. The Woodbine Mile win was her eighth in a row, a streak that started in Keeneland s First Lady (GI) last October, and moved Tepin s lifetime record to 13-for-21. Masterson indicated after the race she may prep for this year s Mile October 8 at Keeneland, in either the First Lady, or the Win and You re In Shadwell Turf Mile (GI), which will award an automatic starting berth into the race. We might run her before the Breeders Cup, Masterson said. She likes to run and he s (Casse) better off running her than working her. It s a long time before the Breeders Cup, she s won three grade I s at Keeneland so we may run her at Keeneland in a grade I. In addition to the First Lady and Mile, Tepin also won the Jenny Wiley (GI) at Keeneland in April. The popular 7-year-old son of 2007 Breeders Cup Turf winner English Channel was a win machine for trainer Roger Brueggemann before going on a four-race losing streak this year. The Pizza Man hadn t hit the board this year, including a sixth-place finish in the Win and You re In Arlington Million (GI) in his last start August 13, but took advantage of Woodbine s long stretch to move his lifetime record to 17-for-31, a ledger that includes a fifth-place finish in last year s Breeders Cup Turf. On Leave, who was second and third, respectively, in two starts as a 2-year-old, entered off a win in Saratoga s Riskaverse August 25 and is now 4-for-6 lifetime. Rainha Da Bateria, who made the first 12 starts of her career for trainer Graham Motion before coming to Brown for a 4-year-old campaign, is now 3-for-16 lifetime and could return to Woodbine for the E.P. The 2-year-old son of Giant s Causeway was a well-beaten sixth in his debut over the track going six furlongs in June for trainer Dale Romans but got two turns and improved in a big way when he broke his maiden at Ellis Park in his last start August 12. Not This Time is now 2-for-3 lifetime and, as a half-brother to Breeders Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam s Map, has his trainer thinking big. The key now is to get him to the Kentucky Derby, Romans said. We ll either train straight up to the Breeders Cup or maybe run in the Breeders Futurity. Keeneland s October 8 Breeders Futurity (GI) is another Win and You re In race for the Juvenile. Daddys Lil Darling, who was fourth sprinting in her debut at Churchill in June, is now 2-for-3 lifetime and will likely train up to the Juvenile Fillies. We ll see what we can do. I don t think I ll run her in the Alcibiades, McPeek said. She s a real lean filly; she doesn t carry much weight. I think we d be a lot more prudent to wait for the Breeders Cup.
