3 President s Message Welcome to Spring everybody! I m loving this warm spring like weather we have had this month so far in February. We ve changed up the Class List this year adding additional age groups for Walk-Trot classes so hope you enjoy the new format. Don t forget our Fuzzy Horse class and our ever so popular Stick Horse class as well! You can find all the great details inside this newsletter. Also with great sadness we share news of Dr. Barseleau s passing. He was and remained a founder member of this club since its inception and we morn with his family in his passing. I ll let members share their favorite memories so please join me down memory lane as we remember this great man, teacher, and horseman. With great sadness, this note is to inform you all that Doc Barseleau passed away this morning. He had a profound effect on me and my life, and many, many others would say the same. He was intelligent, educated, talented, funny, a consummate horseman. He did not suffer fools or those who mistreated horses. How he will be missed! His bio information below comes from the Robie Foundation website - please add to this that he was a very accomplished and published writer and poet, and a great musician! "Dr. Richard Barsaleau has spent his entire life as an equestrian advocate. He was instrumental in turning endurance riding into a recognized sport through his professional concern for the well-being of high performance trail horses, promoting the need for equestrian trails, and teaching good equestrian skills. Son of a US Cavalryman, he earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University. He has been an equestrian owner, breeder, trainer, farrier, equine judge, and competitor with many types of horses in the disciplines of trail riding, English and western pleasure, hunter, jumper, stock horse, polo, working cow horse, etc. He continues to be the consummate Student of the Horse and promotes education in equitation management and all around horsemanship. His life style has focused on horses for over 68 years. Equestrian skills have been learned from formal education as well as from the business end of a manure fork. He has judged horses professionally for 37 years throughout the US, Canada and Australia and is author of the original Handbook Guide for Veterinary Judges. He has been a lecturer, clinician, and demonstrator of equine use in the US, Canada, and Australia; wrote articles on equine performance, training, conditioning, etc, especially for long-distance use. He served as a veterinarian and judge on the Western States Trail Ride (The Tevis Cup "100 Miles One Day" Ride) for six years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Western States Trail Foundation and is an emeritus member of that Board. A defining moment came when he pulled founder Wendell Robie's horse from his own ride, which eventually lead to a mutual respect that would last a lifetime. In 1963 Dr. Barsaleau, along with Will Tevis, developed the Top 10 Rule for awarding the Western States Trail Ride's Haggin Cup for Best Condition, setting a standard in endurance riding competition which is followed to this day. He was also a participant in the WS 100 Mile Ride with 14 completions out of 16 starts, three of which were top ten finishes. He has been a participant and top ten finisher in the Levi's Ride & Tie National competition and has completed the Quilty Cup 100 Mile Ride in Australia." Good bye, Doc, and ride good horses forever in heaven. Jaede Miloslavich ======================================================================================== Doc and I served as delegates for the Mother Lode Arabian Horse Association to the National Convention for a number of years. It was during the time that many felt that show horses needed pads on their feet in order to perform. Doc supported a rebuttal to the resolution change, along with myself and a few others. He addressed the convention in this regard and stated, "If our Arabian Horses could do the Tevis Cup without pads then a show horse certainly could go into a show ring without them." I first met Doc in about 1974 and will remember him with fondness. His presence in the horse world will be missed by all that knew him. Laura Berman

9 Please read this AND PASS IT ON! WE NEED your help for additional staging at Hidden Falls Regional Park in Auburn! ADDITIONAL EQUESTRIAN STAGING AT HIDDEN FALLS PROMISED THREE YEARS AGO When the Hidden Falls trails expansion was proposed three years ago and the grant money was awarded, part of that expansion included additional equestrian staging next to the existing staging off Mears Road. But, the money was rightfully spent on the new trails and new bridges, and our equestrian staging has been pushed forward into the next round of funding. But, there is no additional round of funding available right now. CURRENT EQUESTRIAN STAGING ISSUES, ONLY SEVEN SPACES As everyone knows who uses the popular Hidden Falls trails on the weekends, the seven equestrian staging spaces are packed to overflowing. Because there is no parking available outside the park, if you arrive and no spaces are available, there are hours to wait, or you go home. For those who are traveling near and far, this means the needless expense of fuel and disappointment of no trail ride at all. FUTURE TRAIL EXPANSION TO OPEN SPRING 2013, ADDITIONAL STAGING ISSUES When the additional 21 miles of new trails and ranch roads open in late spring, this parking problem will become a more serious issue for equestrians. Because of attractiveness of the longer trail distances, more riders will come and horses will be on the trails for longer hours, limiting locals and outsiders alike to only horses/riders per day for that beautiful park. Since this is a popular park for equestrians, we need to organize to make sure the planned equestrian parking is completed NOW rather than in years in the future. WHERE STAGING AREA IS PLANNED The helipad directly above the existing staging area is a perfect expansion place - all that is needed is leveling for drainage, DG and gravel. Placer County needs to move the helipad to another area. This takes money. EQUESTRIAN SUPPORT IN THE PAST It wasn't hundreds of hikers or mt. bikers who showed up in the public meetings when Hidden Falls needed our public support to obtain County funds and grants - it was EQUESTRIANS. At that time, Placer County and the Placer Land Trust promised us additional equestrian staging to serve the expansion of the trails. We need that promise. And, Placer County needs our help again TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW Placer County Parks and Grounds and the Placer County Land Trust needs DATA. They aren't out there every day counting rigs and taking pictures. They have no idea when equestrians show up and can't ride or use the park because the staging area is full or blocked by cars, especially on the weekends. They need US for that. So, every time you can't park, or are blocked by cars, or the staging area is full: 1. TAKE A PICTURE 2. Make a PARK WATCH REPORT at (Click on 'INCIDENT REPORT' in the brown box.) You don't need to fill out all those spaces, ONLY the FIVE spaces where it says "Required." For the location, there is a pull down menu that says "Hidden Falls." Just hit 'CONTINUE" at the bottom of the pages. If you have picture, upload it on the third page. Then review and submit it. 3. If for any reason you can't: send the information and/or pictures to me via at info@parkwatchreport.org EVERY Park Watch Report is sent to the Placer County Parks and Grounds Director in charge of Hidden Falls. EVERY one counts. CONCLUSION With your DATA, Placer County Parks and Grounds and the Placer County Land Trust will have solid evidence to apply for grants or move funds to build the additional equestrian staging. PLEASE realize your participation is vital for equestrian staging expansion at Hidden Falls! Remember, go to and file an INCIDENT REPORT!
