1 VOL. 29, NO. 5 SEPTEMBER 2017 Hello Members and Friends: President s Message I know we ve all had a HOT and busy summer and we re hoping the coolness of fall is upon us. We are planning some events that we know you will all be interested in. We lost a wonderful member of our club, Joanna Rykoff, and we will be getting together at Grand Finale Stables to remember her on September 17th. Details are in this Newsletter. Our annual members Open House and BBQ is September 24th at the beautiful Seducente Ranch and Vineyard in Pilot Hill. We plan to celebrate our 2017 Tevis finisher, Terryl Reed. Come and meet Terry if you don t know her, and hear about her ride and the challenges along the way. It is a grueling experience and we had two riders this year. Our new member, Beccca Stone also rode but had to pull out, and we are proud of our members who took on this exciting event. Information is in this newsletter. Cindy Reich, an international judge and breeding consultant, is going to evaluate conformation as it relates to every discipline of horsemanship. Everyday horse events require soundness and that starts with good conformation. We know you will benefit greatly from Cindy s expertise, I know I do. As a breeder, I am responsible for improving each generation I create, and I expect that each foal I put on the ground can excel in performance as well as halter. Conformation is not just for halter, it is for every aspect of horsemanship. Hope you are all enjoying your horses and that you will put our events on your calendars. 2 Page 2 Congratulations to Terryl Reed and her horse, Olena, on winning the inaugural MLAHA Tevis Cooler! Terry has ridden the Tevis eight times and finished five times! My Special Mare Olena Terry Reed As you might expect I feel Olena is a special mare. I first saw her sire HR AFlame while driving on a back road through Santa Ynez. He was amazing but not for sale. Two years later almost to the day I got a call from the Hemming s that they were retiring from the breeding business and that AFlame was for sale. I immediately drove back to Santa Ynez and brought AFlame home. The Coursey s, who owned Le War Lord, a stallion which we showed successfully at halter and in English Pleasure Class A AHA Shows and who I bred to, gave me an older Khemosabi mare. I bred her to AFlame. Olena was her first foal and has become my companion and friend at home and on the trail. No matter where Olena is in the pastures that surround the house, when I whistle she comes at a high trot to see what I want. When thinking I owe her a snack she nickers to me where ever I am. And it is Olena that keeps me in shape - making me work to catch her before coming to me to put her halter on. front but definitely with the latter of the top 10. Olena is a good downhill horse and although not as fast a trotter as some she can smoke any of them when going down a canyon trail. But like I said my friend s horse needed to go a bit slower and so we did. Since we rode the last third of the ride in the dark without any glow sticks or flash lights we got to enjoy the moonlight as it filtered through the trees. Not once did our horses take a misstep or stumble. Both horses came in sound and could have been taken out the next day. In fact less than a week later Olena and I were back on the trail taking down the Tevis ribbons. The same ones we had put up the week before. On my bucket list was to ride one last Tevis this year on Olena with no strings attached. That meant I was escorting no one through so Olena and I could enjoy the ride together. And enjoy the ride we did! It was a long ride that I thought would be a lot quicker. On Friday at check-in a good friend of mine asked if we could ride together and without hesitation I told him yes. I know, I said I was riding alone. He had on many occasions helped not only me but many others. He knew my goal was to complete earlier than later. He rode a good horse capable of doing so. At every gate-and-go and one-hour stop I was able to jump right off and have a pulse well below the 60 needed to go on. Olena was coasting. My friend s horse was having some issues and if we needed to slow up it was fine with me. So slow up we did. Instead of finishing around midnight it was closer to four that we finished. Olena was sound, in good enough spirits that Kathie Perry asked if she could have the honors to lead Olena on her final trot out. Which of course she did. It was Kathie s advice that I listened to and heeded throughout my ride. Olena has been a special horse for you, she has age on her and you don t want to lame her on the hard roads this year s Tevis has you riding on. Let the front runner lead the pace and don t try to keep up. Could have Olena kept up? Maybe not with the

3 Page 3 Little Bits Congratulations to Harley and Pat DeLano on the sale of their beautiful colt, Ali Rashiiq AA, to Ed and Myrlan Magness after his selection as Reserve Champion Region 3 colt. Pat and Harley thank Jesse Saldana for his assistance in the sale. Congratulations to Becca Stone on her first Tevis ride! Although a minor accident back in camp caused her to pull from the Tevis at Forest Hill, Becca was thrilled with her effort. We re proud of you, Becca! According to Becca, if you really want to do something, go do it. Those are the things in life worth pursuing. 4 Page Elections Pursuant to Article VI of the MLAHA Bylaws, the Board of Directors formed a Nominating Committee to prepare a slate of candidates for this year s election. The Committee has prepared the following list of candidates running for the MLAHA Officer and Director positions for 2018, and for the position of Delegate to the Arabian Horse Association Convention. Resumes will be included in the November Tailings and voting will take place in November. FOUR BEAUTIFUL PLEASURE RIDING REGISTERED ARABIAN MARES These mares are from a Polish breeder who was seeking the calm Polish temperament, a solid bone structure, with a pretty head, and elegant look. The mares range in age from 11 16, and have excellent ground manners, obedience, and are all broke to ride in the arena and on the trail. These horses are a treasure and will be sold or placed into homes where they are kept stabled in bad weather, and have an active life with their new owners. They are not for resale nor for lesson horses, and all will be signed over under a contract which guarantees their background and training, and gives them the right to return to their home if there are any problems. The horses are Alurre, 11; Klassy Katy, 16; Kontinuans, 13; and Kapture My Heart, 16. Also available to a special home is a large registered beautiful gelding, All Dat Jazz, age 12. 5 Page 5 Joanna Rykoff September 7, August 1, 2017 It is with great sadness I report the passing of our dear friend, Joanna Rykoff. After a distinguished career in law enforcement, Joanna relocated to Auburn in 2012 and promptly joined MLAHA. Joanna's plan was to start a second career owning an embroidery shop. Her plans were cut short, however, as she got sick soon after opening her shop, forcing her to give up that long-held dream. Joanna just shrugged and turned her entire attention to her REAL love-- her horses. Right to the end, Joanna lavished love and attention on her horses; in fact, the weekend before she passed, she competed in a show in Santa Barbara with her beloved Morgan mare, Lizzie. Joanna was one of MLAHA's greatest supporters, always sponsoring classes, donating items, competing at the Fuzzy Wuzzy, and contributing to the Tailings. One of my favorite articles was the July 2016 A day on the Range when Joanna shared with us how "[she] got to fulfill a wish high up on [her] bucket list. [She] took [her] ½ Arabian ½ Quarter horse gelding, Empyreal Valor, 'Valor', to work cows for the first time." Joanna s memorial service will be held on September 17 at 11 a.m. at Grand Finale Stables, Wolf Road, Grass Valley, CA. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our condolences to Joanna's sister, Jean Zabriskie. Jean, we join you in mourning the passing of our dear friend. Marty

Go past house through ranch gate and around to the barn. Barn is on the right. Pull down to main barn and find a place to park along the arena fence. Please park at the barn unless you have special needs and need to park closer to the house. If you are unable to make the walk from the house to the barn then please pull into the driveway for the house and park at the house. Otherwise please park at the barn. Our hostess, Leslie Prevost, asks that you bring a chair if you would like to watch a dressage demonstration by Valerie Baker and the White Horse Dressage team. After the demonstration, we will adjourn to the house for food and drink and laughs! MLAHA is supplying the meat and drinks, please bring a side dish to share.
