1 Page 1 VOL. 28, NO. 5 SEPTEMBER 2016 President s Message Happy Almost Fall to Members and Friends: I hope your summer was filled with lots of horse related activities. Finally the weather has cooled to make trail riding more enjoyable and all your events much easier for you and your horse. Your board members have been working on possibilities for events that will bring us together as a club and enhance your membership in the Mother Lode AHA. Since past injuries keep me from riding, I am always looking for activities that will highlight the Arabian horse and bring us together in a positive way. Any ideas you have will be welcome. Please be sure to put Oct. 15th on your calendar to join us at Pat DeLano s ranch for a BBQ and get together. The flyer with all the information about the party is in this newsletter. If you would like to bring something for a potluck, do so; if you prefer to just come and join us but don t want to cook, just come along. High noon at Pat s. Mother Lode is working on plans for a high point award for an Arabian horse at the fall show circuit in Placerville. We are hoping that Arabian horses are in high numbers showing their versatility. If you are competing for the high point award, please send Marty a photo of you and your horse for inclusion in the newsletter. We always enjoy sharing pictures of our members and their horses. See you there. We also plan to give an award to the highest placing MLAHA member riding in next year s Tevis Cup. We are proud that Arabians finish so well, and we know that hard work and dedication goes into making the finish line a reality. Congratulations to those of you that participated this year, and we hope that all of you finish well next year. The Region 3 Championship Show was held for the first time this year at Murrieta Equestrian Center. For those of you that competed - congratulations. It was really hot, but the show committee worked hard to make it a great show. Thanks to Sharon Richards and Dan Stevenson for your continued dedication to the Arabian competitors from Northern California. The Mother Lode Board of Directors unanimously extends a lifetime membership to Jaede Miloslavich for her continued contributions to our club. We thank her for her service. Mother Lode meets the third Tuesday of each month at Mel s Diner in Auburn at 6 p.m. for dinner. Join us if you can and bring ideas to show off our Arabians. More exciting news The Board of Directors has voted to present a HIGH POINT ARABIAN buckle for the fall series of schooling shows at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville. You don t have to have fancy gear or a trainer, just show up and have a blast and you will only be competing against other Arabians, half-arabians, or Anglo-Arabians for that beautiful buckle!!!! 2016 Fall Open Schooling Show dates are on Sundays, September 11, October 16, November 13, and December 4. Shows are held rain or shine and although they begin at 8:00 am, the reining classes go first so unless you have a reiner, you don t need to arrive before 11 am or so. 6 Page 6 THE HYDRATED HORSE Karen Briggs thehorse Any treatise on caring for horses you ve ever read probably includes the line, Provide access to plenty of fresh, clean water. Though we all understand that this is good advice after all, all living things need this simple, essential liquid we don t tend to give water a lot of consideration as part of the equine diet. The reality is that water is the most important nutrient, bar none. Without water almost all of your horse s systems cease to function, as it: Aids in thermoregulation (the maintenance of the horse s body temperature); Lubricates the joints; Helps cushion the central nervous system; Is involved in both sight and hearing; Aids in digestion; Acts as a solvent for toxins and helps eliminate them through urine and sweat; and Helps maintain an elastic skin tone. To give you another perspective on water s importance, consider that horses can survive without food for up to three weeks, but they can only survive without water for a maximum of five to six days. Though water intake varies based on the horse s exertion level, the ambient temperature, the components of his diet, and other factors, the average 1,000- pound horse needs a bare minimum of three to eight gallons a day to function at a maintenance level. Horses quickly become dehydrated without sufficient water. Within 24 hours of water deprivation, they may lose about 4% of their bodyweight, through a combination of sweating and urination, manure, and respiration. After 48 hours without water, they have lost 6.8% of their bodyweight; after 72 hours, about 9% and if summer heat is involved, that number may skyrocket to 16%. The symptoms of dehydration dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes, a tucked-up appearance, skin that has lost its elasticity, and a slowed capillary refill time only become obvious when the horse already has lost 6% of his bodyweight or more. By that time, dehydration has already wreaked its devastating effect on athletic performance and digestive efficiency. Both functions take a nosedive in the absence of water and decreased digestive function can quickly lead to colic. In fact, the main reason the incidence of colic increases from December to March is that many horses don t drink enough water in the winter months (often because their water supply has been allowed to freeze over). Winter isn t the only time horses are at risk for colic due to restricted water intake, however. Any time a horse faces a rapid decrease in water consumption, he ll be more prone to impaction colic, especially if a good part of his diet is dried forage. Horses grazing fresh, juicy pasture can extract much of their water needs from their grass intake, but those eating hay or roughage cubes need to drink significantly more so that their gastrointestinal systems can churn the dried forage into a digestible slurry.
7 Page 7 Mares in foal or lactating (or both) have increased needs for water, largely because they are satisfying their increased energy and protein needs by taking in more feed but also because they lose some water in the placental fluids and in producing milk. Although foals satisfy most of their liquid requirements by nursing, most will begin to drink water at the age of only one to two weeks. It s a habit that begins early and lasts a lifetime. The other reason horses become dehydrated is excessive water loss through sweating, as can happen in heat and humidity, especially when stressful exercise is involved. When temperatures are high, water needs can increase by three to four times with work. Horses with diarrhea or scours also become dehydrated quite rapidly, and the water loss in this case makes thermoregulation difficult and contributes to fever. Whatever the reason behind it, dehydration is a situation best prevented. The easiest way to ensure your horse never gets dehydrated is to make sure he always has access to clean, fresh water, regardless of the weather. HORSES AND WATER AT MAGICAL RANCH (You can lead a horse to water, but you can t make him drink ) Water is our top priority for the 12 horses at Magical Ranch. We have 25 drinking areas which include 4 automatic in-stall waters, six yard waters, 3 barnyard tubs, 5 in-stall tubs, 1 in the arena, and 6 in pastures. We don t use little fish in the tanks, but we do almost daily dumping, scrubbing, and refilling with clean cold water. Studies indicate that horses prefer larger water containers than the smaller ones traditional to most stalls. Our horses agree and will immediately go to drink large gulps of cold fresh water in their yards. Horses need water to prevent colic and choke, and our experience is that it works. We encourage drinking by adding loose salt to their feed each day there was also a study that said we can t assume that horses will get enough salt from a salt block. Our experience is that some horses will chew up their salt block, some will lick it, and others will ignore it. Although you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink, you can certainly encourage drinking by keeping it clean and adding salt.
