Absolutely awesome to see so many youth riders!
2 Page 2 The day dawned crisp and bright. Perfect Northern California day. Then the trailers started piling in and the show was on! At the end of the day, everyone agreed this was the best Fuzzy Wuzzy ever. Over 120 riders and handlers showed off their Arabians, Quarter horses, Morgans, and many other breeds of horses and ponies (and fuzzy ones, too, enjoyed showing off). The burgers, hot dogs, and other goodies provided by Sue Rich and her team were delicious, the camaraderie was wonderful, and the horses were beautiful! Although there were too many horses and riders to showcase in our little publication, I wanted to specially recognize the Mother Lode horses and riders in the Arabian & Half/Anglo Pleasure Open Western or English MLAHA member only class. First Place went to Lisa Garrison on her Arabian RA Khool Dreamer Second was Carson Adams on Havana Shai Image, also an Arabian Third was Kat Moss riding California White Sox, Arab & Saddlebred Fourth was Joanna Rykof on Empyreal Valor, an Arab/Quarter cross Fifth place, Julee Drake riding WhatLuck Got to do with it, a half-arabian And Sixth place was Addie Stabile on Intruders Reflection, also a half-arabian Special recognition also deserved by MLAHA Youth Member Carson Adams on her horse Havana Shai Image (Lexi). She won multiple first places, both in English and Western, and placed in most of her other classes. According to High Point Chairperson Dorothee Moss, she would have been a great contender for a High Point Trophy (which I hope I can receive for next year's Fuzzy Wuzzy). Finally, MLAHA would like to thank Debbie Helton (with Broken Arrow Stables in Penryn), who brought 15 kids and 7 horses to the show. What a great way of supporting our club! Her kids had a lot of fun and did really well. Debbie commented that everybody really enjoyed the show, and the show was very well run. Congratulations to all of you! Thanks to Dorothee Moss for taking the pictures of the Fuzzy Wuzzy on this page and throughout this month s Tailings. Can t wait for next year! Marty Counts, editor Fuzzy Wuzzy March 23, 2015

4 Page 4 Equine Metabolic Syndrome Katherine Blocksdorf (reprinted from Equine Metabolic Syndrome is a rather new term used to describe horses with what is thought to be a genetic predisposition that leads to obesity, insulin resistance and laminitis. It s a syndrome that is of particular concern for me because my own horse Trillium has some of characteristics that can lead to Equine Metabolic Syndrome. As an easy keeper it is tempting be happy about the fact that it takes very little food to keep her healthy almost too healthy. However, easy keepers are the exactly the type of horses that can develop EMS. And while she is not happy about being kept in the diet pasture with a pony that tends to be on the obese side, it is ultimately better for her health. Other Names for Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Equine Metabolic Syndrome, EMS, Prelamintic Metabolic Syndrome, Peripheral Cushing s Syndrome Causes of Equine Metabolic Syndrome: It is thought that horses have a genetic predisposition for EMS. Some breeds, ponies in particular, seem to more likely to get EMS than others. Paso Finos, Arabians, Spanish Mustangs, Quarter Horses and other breeds that come from an ancestry of horses that lived in harsh conditions appear to develop EMS more easily than horses like Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. My mare is a Paint and Thoroughbred cross and undoubtedly has some Quarter Horse in her background Symptoms: Equine Metabolic Syndrome has three characteristics. Horses with EMS tend to carry fat along the tops of their necks, over the top of tail, behind the shoulders or in the udder/sheath area. Even when my mare becomes leaner through dieting and exercise, she still has a pad of very hard fat along the top of her neck. Horses with EMS become insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is determined by a veterinarian who measures the insulin and sugar levels in the blood. The third characteristic of EMS, and most devastating, is laminitis. While my own horse does not have laminitis, I do worry that her apparently tender soles are an indication that without proper management, full blown laminitis could easily develop. (As it it, the only way I have been able to keep her feet comfortable is with shoes, as much as I would prefer to keep her unshod.) EMS tends to affect horses in the prime of their lives, unlike Cushing s Disease which affects horses in their senior years. EMS in horses is similar to Metabolic Syndrome in humans. Treatment: EMS is controlled by managing a horses diet and exercise regime. Pasture grass should be limited, especially in spring or when pasture is rebounding after a drought as quickly growing grass is high in carbohydrates that need to be limited. All feeds need to be low energy foods and concentrates; especially those made with high energy ingredients like sweet feed with molasses or corn should be eliminated. When a hay only diet doesn t provide enough nutrients low calorie commercial feed can be fed, along with beet pulp without molasses, and vegetable oils to replace the carbohydrates without affecting the horse s insulin levels. This is similar to a low glycemic diet for humans. Horses with severe EMS may never be able to graze at pasture, while some may be able to tolerate a brief grazing time say an hour or so a day. Exercise is also essential and being a pasture potato is not good for any horse. Regular exercise is good for a horse (and human). Despite my mare s assertions that her role is to eat and look pretty, having a steady job is good for her. Of course, if a horse with EMS has developed laminitis, the veterinarian will be able to advise on how to exercise it without causing pain. So far, there are no drugs that have satisfactorily prevented or treated EMS. If the EMS horses develops laminitis, drugs may used to treat the inflammation and pain. Prevention: Pity poor Trillium in her diet pasture as she gazes longingly over the fence watching her buddies dine on green grass or rich second cut hay. But, the only way to prevent the onset of EMS may be to prevent a horse becoming obese in the first place.

9 Mother Lode Arabian Horse Association Membership Committee presents Trail Trials Clinic with Jaede Miloslavich Sunday, June 22, :00 AM - 4:00 PM Loomis Basin Horsemen s Arena ENTRY AND QUESTIONNAIRE Name Address City State Zip Home phone Cell phone EMERGENCY CONTACT Cell phone Experience and level of horsemanship Horse s Name Age Breed Training and experience What would you especially like to work on in this clinic? Trail Trials is an obstacle course competition that tests the skills of horse and rider. Courses are several miles in length and reflect the diversity of California trails whether they are located on a ranch, public park, wilderness, beach, desert or urban setting. Obstacles are natural to their region and are ones typically encountered while on a trail ride. Trail obstacles are not composed of artificial arena-style tests. A judge at each obstacle evaluates the way both horse and rider negotiates these obstacles by keeping common sense and safety in mind. You are not judged in between the obstacles. Trail trials is not a race and can be ridden at your own pace, with any breed of horse or any style of riding. Equipment: Any type of humane equipment, bit, bitless bridle, bosal, English or western saddle. No tie downs, nosebands or martingales of any kind, and no one is to ride with a halter. You may use a mecate or rope halter and 12 lead line for ground work. No dogs: As much as we all love dogs, we ask that riders and auditors leave your dogs at home. No stallions. No exceptions. Helmets are required for riders 18 and under and strongly suggested for every one else. Photos: By entering and participating in this clinic you are giving consent for photos to be taken of you (over the age of 18) and/or your horses. Behavior: Horses with behavioral issues, such as kicking or striking at others, will be excused at Jaede s discretion. Humans with behavior issues may be excused or have a red ribbon tied to their jeans. $25 MLAHA members (each rider/one horse) $40 All others (each rider/one horse) Clinic and Lunch Clinic and Lunch FREE!
