1 Page 1 VOL. 27, NO. 3 MARCH 2015 After all those storms, here we are, dry and sunny, no matter what the weather people say! We still have many months to go before the rainy season is over, so I am optimistic about lovely soft Spring showers. Fuzzy Wuzzy is nearly here on March 22 in Loomis. It is such a great show for kids, for adults, for the horses! It is often the first show for either the person or horse, and you should see those big smiles coming out of the arena with a ribbon. It is less competitive than the class A shows, and a good way to test your riding and your horse to see if you want to climb the ladder to the bigger, longer shows near-by. Our first barn visit on February 22 was so much fun I think this may be my kind of party. Limited to only 10 visitors by reservation, it is a way to bring people together with horses in a variety of ways. We had a combination of very sophisticated Arabian folks with those that have never really been near a horse, and I think everyone had a good time. It is a very casual event, and the next one will be on March 15 5 p.m. 7 p.m. Just call to reserve your spot! We will be serving beer, wine, soft drinks, chips and a cheese platter. And carrots.. Please come join us at our monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month, and don t forget we are meeting at Mel s on Highway 49 in Auburn this month at 6 p.m. If you are going to eat, drink, or have dessert, please order your food before coming into the meeting! After we conclude our business, there will be plenty of time for socializing and ordering food. Happy St. Patrick s Day! 2 Page 2 SHOW RING ETIQUETTE Reprinted with permission from the Kentucky Horse Council Have you ever been having a really good ride in a class only to have someone box you in on the rail and make it virtually impossible to be seen by the judge? Or how about been on a young horse their first time to the show ring, and have someone ride right up behind you causing your young mount to get claustrophobic and lose their composure. It happens to all of us and none of these scenarios are any fun. To avoid being that person this summer as you hit the show circuit, follow some simple show ring etiquette rules to keep you in the good graces of your fellow competitors. I always like to obey the Golden Rule when in the show ring. In other words, if you wouldn t want someone to do it to you, don t do it to them. Remember competition and sportsmanship go hand in hand, and etiquette is a part of good showmanship AND good sportsmanship. First thing to consider in the show ring is to always leave at least a full horse length between you and the horse in front of you. This not only avoids your horse getting kicked, but also sets you apart from that horse in front of you. After all, the idea of showing is getting the judge to look at you and your steed, but if he or she can t tell where the horse in front of you ends and yours begins, you likely won t get noticed as much as you want. Another thing to keep in mind is passing other horses. If you find that you are coming up on the horse in front of you and are going to break the one horse length rule, it is perfectly acceptable to pass that animal on the inside. Be sure to allow PLENTY of room between you and the horse you are passing. No judge will dock you for moving a few horse widths inside to pass. If you get to the inside and find that you are not going to be able to pass the rider in front of you in a timely manner (10 15 strides or so), make a circle to the inside and find another comfortable place on the rail. Remember, the person you are passing is trying to exhibit their horse as well and there is nothing more frustrating than having to break gate because someone has boxed you in on the rail. Also keep in mind that when a transition is called for, you don t have to proceed right away. Allow the horses in front of you a few seconds to make the transition (especially to a faster gate) and then ask your mount. This will also help keep spacing issues to a minimum. Finally, if you are riding a horse that may kick if approached closely from behind, tie a red ribbon in their tail to caution fellow riders. One other consideration to make on show day is the gate to the show ring. Remember that is where riders are making their first impression on the judge. If you are not in the class entering the ring, keep clear of the gate. Give the competitors entering the ring a chance to gather up their horses and make the best first impression possible. If you are one of the competitors in the class, be courteous and allow yourself time and space. Remember you are also making a fist impression and being considerate of other riders will only bring you favor in the judges eyes. Additionally, being prompt into and out of the show ring is important. Be aware of the show schedule and pay attention to the progression of the show so that you are in the immediate area and ready when your class is being called. If you are riding multiple horses in the same class or competition, make sure to have someone to help you with tack changes etc. so you don t make the judge and fellow competitors wait for you. Making these few considerations can make show day much more fun for everyone. Remember to be considerate of others and abide by the Golden Rule. 5 Page 5 Dear Kelly, I know that when you asked me yesterday how I thought your horse was doing, you were looking for a last ray of hope. It really hurt not to be able to give you some encouragement that his problem could be healed. When we took him to where they were digging the grave, he hauled like the perfect gentleman that he was. When I gave him the injection, he laid down quietly and was unconscious in seconds. Although it took a few minutes for the drugs to take their final effect, he was in a total coma and feeling no pain until the end. Saying that we've all got to go sometime does nothing to ease the pain of your loss. But if I had to choose a day to die, I would surely choose one like yesterday: a summer afternoon in June, not too warm nor too cool, in one of the wettest springs that I can remember. The fresh green grass stretched across the rolling hills as far as the eye could see. A crystal blue sky hung overhead with just a few marshmallow clouds on the horizon for contrast. A soft breeze kissed the brow of the hill, overlooking the river bottom in all its velvet green finery, stretching to the distant mountains. Dozens of different kinds of wild flowers splashed accents of red, yellow, and blue. As I knelt to see if his heart had stopped, I noticed all around a wildflower that has been a favorite of mine since childhood. Lithe spiderworts were pregnant with buds and should be in bloom by the time you receive this letter. If you kneel and sniff several of these bright blue flowers, you will find one of the sweetest scents in the world -- a fragrance to bring to memory happy times. That's something else I'd like to mention -- happy times, Kelly, please remember your friend not as he was with his problems, but as he would have been without them, and as I am sure that he is, even now. Remember him doing the horse things that he never could; galloping off across the hills with his proud Arabian head held high, and the wind whipping his tail behind him. Remember that the love you gave him was never wasted, and that he also loved you. Even though he is gone, this love remains. Sincerely, Ruth B. James, D.V.M.
