A fundraising Committee was formed Melinda Schiller, Noeline Blume, Julie Ryan, Di Campbell, Joan Collins and Mel Neale. Waiting to go up at Barellan 2012

4 The Benzing Dash for Cash Sunday 24 June 2012 saw the running of the Benzing Dash for Cash (BDC). The BDC was first suggested to the club by Rob Neale. However it was the enthusiasm of Paul and Julie Ryan which saw it take off. Paul and Julie put together a team of 40 birds and with the generous support of Nigel Jarvis set up an online auction with bidders bidding for the right to a prize pool of $500. Kevin Clark from Benzing Australia came on board and donated a Benzing G2 and One Field antenna to be auctioned. The online auction started on Sunday 17th June ending in a flurry of bids on Saturday evening 23rd June. All birds attracted spirited bidding with the Benzing Clock reaching a high of $775. The highest priced pigeon was $51. The Club Secretary and Publicity Officer set the publicity in motion and the fundraising committee set about planning the open day. The day was ensured of being a success with Rob Neale of Leader Products announcing that Leader Products would provide the money to purchase the food for lunch. Coverage by the Australian Racing Pigeon Journal, Prime Television, The Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser and FM93.1 stirred up good interest in the local community. The day started at 10am with the basketing of the race team with the first guests arriving around 11am. An enthusiastic crowd of 60 gathered at the Ryan's enjoying a good lunch and conversation with pigeon club members. Visitors were very impressed with the clubs enthusiasm and the Ryan s lofts and excellent hospitality. Paul Ryan and Ian Collins transported the birds to the release point near Ganmain NSW, a kilometre flight for the birds. The birds were liberated at 1pm, the skies were slightly overcast and there was a south west wind blowing. The birds liberated unhindered and headed home. Rob Neale saw the team coming off the south west at around 1.38pm. The birds dropped in one mob and trapped magnificently, testament to their training regime. The winning bird Wagga , a BCP, clocked at pm for an average of metres per minute. The second bird, Wagga , clocked at and the third bird, Wagga , clocked at The race resulted in 100% return. Congratulations to Greg Thornthwaite, Pat Tenison and Ryan Campbell for bidding on the first three birds. A draw was also conducted on the day for everyone in attendance and a prize pool awarded for the first three birds clocked. Winners were Geoff Turner, Joan Collins and Bob Toose. A donation will be made to Greg Thornthwaites chosen charity. Once again thank you to our generous sponsors, Nigel Jarvis, Benzing Australia and Leader products, and to Paul and Julie Ryan and the members of the Wagga Wagga Racing Pigeon club. Of course big thanks to the community for supporting us.

OK, so who left the lights on?????

15 SOME INTERESTING FACTS TO FINISH THE YEAR. Pigeons are the oldest recorded birds in history. The first recorded pigeon race was in 211 AD. Pigeon Racing as we know it today had its origins in the mid-19 th century in Belgium. When a flyer entered a pigeon in a race they were given a hessian bag with the pigeon s ring number written on it. When the pigeon arrived at the loft the flyer was required to place the pigeon in the bag and run to the clubrooms. Naturally it was the younger flyers or the flyer that lived closest to the clubrooms who usually won the race. To try and overcome this some clubs introduced a handicap system for flyers depending on where their loft was in relation to the clubrooms. It was thought the introduction of the Telegraph would have a major impact on pigeon racing. On race days flyers would telegraph the local post office when their pigeon arrived. The postie would then take the results to the clubrooms. Of course this system relied totally on the honesty of the flyer as they no longer had to produce the pigeon at the clubrooms. It was not until the turn of the century that specialised individual clocks were introduced. In 1990 the first Electronic Clock (ETS) was introduced. By the mid 1990s ETS was being used almost exclusively in Europe and the USA. Take up in Australia came much later. It is reported that China holds a 5000km race. It takes around 10 days for a winner to be declared. Apparently the race has been won a number of times. It is reported that in some Asian Countries where Pigeon Racing is popular villagers in the mountain areas have strung nets across valleys to catch racing pigeons, which are then ransomed back to the owner. One of the more progressive changes in pigeon racing has been the One Loft Race. The One Loft Race has its origins in Australia
