2 PRESIDENTS REPORT Sherry Fenton The past three months have been extremely busy but then anyone that owns horses knows this is always the case. Winter is no longer my optimum time for riding so it allows me to catch up on much needed stud paperwork etc. I now maintain I ride for pleasure not pain, too old for any unnecessary suffering these days I only like enjoyment. I would like to welcome the Vandongen family, as new members to Tas ARAB s, Craig and his partner Carol together with their daughters Hannah and Emily. Recently, Hannah participated in the costume display at Agfest with her mare Anawa Kachina, a first for them both and together they did the club proud. It is lovely to see youngsters become more involved they are the future of this club. Rumour has it that upcoming shows are going to see the return of many Arabian horses in the stunning costume class, a real spectacle for everyone to come and watch and enjoy. So, if you have an Arabian costume or know someone who does, please encourage them to enter too, the more participants the better. The club has two costumes available for members use, please contact the Secretary, Melissa Thallin. Spectators are more than welcome to attend any of our events, see the calendar for details. 5 On Saturday 18th of break of seven years, the Riders & Breeders Inc. February 2012 after a Tasmanian Arabian Club is delighted to announce that the All Breeds Stallion Parade & Equine Expo is back!!!!! Bigger and better than ever, the event will be held at Quercus Park, on the Agfest site Equestrian Arena providing excellent facilities for horse owners, businesses and spectators alike to ensure an excellent day out for everyone. There will be heaps of entertainment for the kids including free pony rides and numerous other fun activities for them to enjoy. A range of food and beverages will be available on the day. This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses in, or relating to, the equine industry to show the broader horse community and general public what they have to offer horse breeders, horse owners and horse lovers alike. Any business interested in being a part of the Expo should contact Mel Reid on or (ah) Stallion owners are invited to showcase their stallions to the public and promote both their stud and breeding program to the broader community providing them with the best possible exposure. Any stallion owner who would like more information about the parade should contact Sherry Fenton on or (ah) Please pass the word around to anyone that you know who might be interested in attending & promoting their stallion/stud or Equine business, club or organisation. Mark this date in your diary as a MUST SEE event for the whole family.

6 Kerril Winter I will never forget the first time that I met Kerril Winter. I could hear this larger than life lady cackling away at my first Arabian show. She was having a ball and obviously very popular. Her generosity extended to newcomers like me and I was made to feel very welcome over a glass of champagne. The celebration was one of her stallion, Kerrilea Mi Kushmah s many supreme wins which, as we all know would have been one in an exceptional list of achievements. He was probably one of the most decorated stallions in the state and certainly one of the most recognisable. I know that Kerril would have wanted us to remember him with great affection as well as for his merits. I consider myself privileged to have had the opportunity to take a turn at successfully competing with him under saddle. He was a real joy to ride as well as an absolute power house! Kushy was unique in many ways. With mother Myra, they would arrive at an event looking like they were going out to dinner, no matter how early in the morning. Mind you, she was forever late, but the horses always arrived in the ring looking fabulous. As far as breeding went, her principal mare was the wonderful Currawong Natasha who produced 19 foals, many of whom became champions. Kerril s innate sense of what would cross with what, stood her in very good stead. As one of the founding members of the Tasmanian Crabbet Arabian group, she was passionate about the Arabians horse in performance, This was, as I believe, the main aim of the group as she did her best to uphold these virtues. She always tried to support other clubs attending shows and her greatest desire was to have a happy show.

7 She was talented in other areas: A wonderful and fearless nurse for which she is remembered by many. As far as I know she was the first to take a dog into a nursing home. Bringing joy to her patients. Dogs were also a passion in her life and the Shitsus she bred have brightened up many house holds. Kerril also had artistic talents, which were evident in her clay sculptures and she really loved to garden. Kerril s generosity was second to none. Her enthusiasm was second to none. She had a great sense of humour which, in the face of adversity, served her well. 10 Tasmanian Arabian Riders and Breeders Profile of the Month Tory Hood Focus on youth June 2011 A little about Tory away from horses: Hi my name is Tory Hood, I am a 12year old girl turning 13 this year. I currently attend Scotch Oakburn secondary school in Launceston. I wish to continue with my studies once finished secondary school and attend University to complete a bachelor of science and become an equine vet. Involvement with horses: I have always been involved with horses from a young age as my family have been involved with horses and breeding. I have several part bred Arabians and I purebred. I was lucky enough in the past few years to be taken under the wing of the late Joylene Dudink, to whom I owe so much of my knowledge and understanding of horses too. Joylene was an amazing and inspirational horsewoman. I only hope that I can continue working with horses and using all the information and knowledge that she gave me and become half the person that she was not just with horses but in life in general.

11 Competition Details: In the past two years I have been fortunate enough to join Tas Arab s in the costume display at Agfest. This has been a wonderful experience for me and I look forward to joining the club again with other such activities in the future. I do many other disciplines as well such as; Show jumping Dressage, eventing, Pony Club and my Favourite Hunting these are just a few disciplines that I compete in with my horses. Hunting is an amazing sport and so much fun, it s a great place to get to know people and the horses love getting out and having a good gallop over jumps. It is however not all about going fast, there is always a slower social group to join as well. I suggest to anyone that has not already tried, to have a go at hunting with your Arabian friend I am sure that you will both love it and want to come back time and time again. My current team of horses includes: Koombahla Yahaa, Anawa Satanta, Maelong Anawa s Marionette and Heste Arabique Painted Vision. My purebred is Carrington Park Captivation. I love riding and working with Arabian horses as they are so intelligent and agile. Along with making great friends, I know I can always rely on my horses. Future Plans: I currently plan to continue working hard at school to get the scores that I need to enter into Uni for my Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree to become a Vet specialising in the Equine Industry. I also plan to continue working with my horses and competing in the disciplines that I love. I currently have a few young horses that need starting and I am looking forward to this challenge. When I am older I wish to continue on with a breeding program for my horses.
