1 OLD BERKS HUNT PONY CLUB HARTPURY CAMP 10 August - 15 August 2014 FOR MEMBERS 12 YEARS OF AGE AND UPWARDS Dear Member/Parent/Guardian The Old Berkshire Hunt Pony Club Camp Committee look forward to welcoming you at Hartpury for Senior Camp The purpose built Equestrian College offers the very best facilities. They include: the use of indoor and outdoor all weather arenas, a XC schooling course we can use weather permitting and a full set of Show Jumps. The stables are of the highest standard, full size permanent boxes, set out in Yards or American Barns with tack rooms in every yard. The yards are very secure and alarmed. We have use of a teaching block with classrooms, video and DVD equipment. The excellent Instructors have all taught for the Pony Club before and have proved popular with members. Hartpury is located just north of Gloucester off the A417 to Ledbury. For most OBH members it is approximately an hour and a half journey. The accommodation is within the College Halls of Residence. Meals are in the College canteen, three good hot meals a day are provided with several choices on the menu including vegetarian. We will provide hot drinks and snacks in the evening. The canteen and vending machines in the recreation areas sell sundry items, drinks and snacks. There is plenty of space for outdoor games and a common room. Evening entertainment will include a disco, demonstration, games and an activity trip off campus. The cost for 2014: This will include: * Instruction. *Accommodation. *Meals. *All recreation activities. *Stabling and 4 bales of Cushionbed The cost does not include extra bedding, hard feed or hay - you must provide your own. If you are unable to provide your own Extra Bedding/Hay, Hartpury will be able to provide meadow 6.00 per bale, 6.00 per bale. Please add your requirements to your application form.. If you wish your horse to live on straw or another type of bedding you must provide this yourself. Please contact organiser to arrange. Times will be confirmed in your arrival documents. It will be after 5.30 as the stables will be in use for the Hartpury Three Day event over the preceding week. There will be an arrival procedure full details of which will be sent in your SAE. We will not be providing a full supper on the first night, there will be hot and cold drinks. All members should bring a packed supper for the first night. (Eat a good lunch before coming) Departure: Mid-Afternoon Friday 15 th August This year there will be no competition it will be a normal working morning. Parents, siblings, relations and friends are all welcome to come and watch from onwards. No lunch will be provided for Members on the last day - please bring picnic lunch for you and your child/children we will eat this together prior to prize giving. For this application to be considered you must: *Be a fully paid up member (priority will be given to those who paid by 31st January,2014) *If it is your first time at Senior Camp you should have attended if possible a dismounted Camp Preparation Rally. If possible all Members should have attended three rallies. *Attach the signed Declaration of Understanding from your parent/guardian. 3 An Equine Flu Vaccination Checker Form is attached which shows the timetable for vaccinations and this should be filled in and returned with your application. All certificates require 2 primary jabs and another within 5-7 months before the annual booster jab. Alcohol and cigarettes will not be permitted and anyone found breaking this rule will be sent home immediately. The organisers may if they feel necessary search belongings for alcohol Jewellery must not be worn while on the yard or riding No Bicycles will be allowed There is parking in the Woodland Car Park at Hartpury for the week of camp if you wish to leave your trailer or lorry this is at your own risk. Please let the organisers know if you would like to do this. Riding wear to be a sensible colour (no bright coloured jodhpurs) Shirts to have collars and sleeves, ( no hoodies or T-shirts) Mobile phones: use will be restricted, all phones will be stored by the organisers and they can be made available to the owner at anytime for calls home or other important calls. There will be plenty of time in recreational periods to make and receive calls.. Parents/Guardian will be held responsible for ensuring their child does not bring either Alcohol or Cigarettes into camp If you require any extra information or have any questions please contact

5 Full grooming kit: to include plaiting kit. Tack cleaning equipment Cooler Rug, Stable Rug (for cold nights) Boots or Special tack Studs if needed for XC Saddle and Bridle (correctly fitting and in good repair) Minimum 2/3 Clean Numnahs Head collar, rope and spare rope Mucking out equipment suitable for shavings, barrow, (or muck sack) fork, broom, shovel (It is not very easy to share equipment as you may not be on the same yard) ALL EQUIPMENT MUST BE CLEARLY NAMED Please ensure your Horse/Pony has been recently shod. We do not have a Farrier on site. RIDER HAT (this must conform to the following standard or you will not ride) It must also carry a Pony Club Hat Tag. The hat must bear the CE mark and a quality symbol, either the BSI Kite mark, the SAI Global symbol or the official Snell label with number. The CE symbol on its own is not sufficient to ensure consistent standard of manufacture. The PAS 015:1998, 2010 or 2011 and the Snell E2001 meet higher impact criteria and therefore give more protection. The standards are as follows:- PAS015:1998, 2010 or EN1384:1996, BSEN1384:1997 with the BSI Kite mark. NB The prefix 'BS' on the EN1384 standard does NOT mean that the hat has undergone batch testing by the British Standards Institute - the hat must contain the BSI Kite mark as well. Snell E2001 with the official Snell label and number. AS/NZS OR AS/NZS Back protector (BETA approved and correctly fitted) Medical Armband (compulsory for all XC work) Minimum of 2 pairs of jodhpurs, (not bright colours)

6 Suitable smart riding shirts, these may be polo shirts, cotton shirts or rugby type but must not carry large slogans. All OBH clothing is acceptable. (At least one shirt should have a suitable collar that allows a tie to be worn) Boots to ride in (chaps if required) NO SPURS will be worn at camp unless you have written permission from the DC. Wellington boots or similar for mucking out (trainers worn on the yard will NOT be allowed in the Canteen) XC shirt (must have long sleeves) tie or stock for XC 2 pairs of riding gloves Girls to wear hairnets or band to keep hair tidy. Please bring minimum 3 hairnets Pony Club tie and badge. Hacking jacket Personal casual clothes Trainers or shoes to change into, suitable for wearing in the Canteen Manual of Horsemanship, notebook, and pen ACCOMMODATION This is provided on site in one of the student accommodation blocks. Each room has a bed, desk, wardrobe, shelf, chair. Please state on your form if you would like a room next to a friend giving their name. You must provide Sleeping bag or duvet (with cover) Under sheet Pillow and pillowcase Towel A small amount of money for tuck spending is all that is needed. Please do not bring large amounts of cash to camp. Note for parents:

7 Please provide 1 Cake and 1 Packet of Biscuits for mid morning and afternoon snacks. These to be handed in at the Camp Office on day of arrival. FEEDING: Guidelines, It is important that your Horse/Pony is fed according to the basic rules of feeding. During Camp week he/she will be working far harder than normal. Feed according to age: Older Horses/Ponies will need more and often a different type of feed, than younger Horses/Ponies. This is especially important at camp - older horses will need good quality feed to keep up their energy levels Size: Larger animals need more than smaller ones - this will be both bulk (hay) and hard feed. Temperament: A hot/fizzy type will need less food than a placid slow one - they will need different types of feed. The fizzy animal needs less heating/energy giving feed, even fast energetic types will require plenty of feed at camp Type Thoroughbred types need a different feed to cobby types. Some native Arab or TB crosses can be fizzy but this is not sustained and they may still need some energy type feeds. Many TB s and TB crosses find it hard to maintain fat and often need conditioning type mixes that are non heating According to Work: This is particularly important at camp, as they will be working very hard, a minimum of 3 hours daily. The Horse/Pony will be stabled so will not have access to feed 24/7 the bulk ration 55% of the feed intake will be made up of hay. The remainder will be hard feed. Depending on size this will be 3-7 kilo s fed in 2/3 feeds. Very few ponies/horses will find enough energy value in a Chaff or grass based mix during Camp week, most will need double the energy ration they usually have- this is Boot Camp for your pony/horse. A good quality Pasture or Competition mix will generally suit most horses/ponies at camp, a fibre mix added to the feed will aid digestion.

8 Basic Guidelines: 14hh Pony 9.3kgs (20 1/2lb) total per day 3kgs (6 3/4lb) hard feed per day 15h.2hh Horse 11.8 kgs (26lb) Total per day 5.5kgs (12lb) hard feed per day 16h.2hh Horse 15.0kgs (33lb) Total per day 6.75kgs (15lb) Hard feed per day Working on the guidelines a 15h 2h horse will need 27.5 kgs hard feed, for the week of camp, a bag of hard feed weighs 20 kgs. Just over a bag of hard feed would be needed for camp week. The easiest feed to bring to camp will be a suitable mix - the type of mix will depend on the Horse/Pony. You will use approx. 1/3 bale of hay a day if you buy from Hartpury depending on the size of your pony/horse you will need 2 or 3 bales Please use the above guidelines, if you are not sure ask your Livery Owner/Manager, Pony Club Instructor or Ros Hayward mobile: FIT FOR CAMP It is very important that Horses/Ponies are fit for camp, this will ensure the rider and Pony have a good time. Those that are normally kept at grass should not be too fat. To achieve the level of fitness required; steady work for1/2hrs 4 days a week from end of May will be needed. Once they are in steady work even grass kept ponies should receive hard feed. A combined system: out in the day, stabled at night will help to achieve fitness and may be a good system for those with limited time. The work should be increased 2/3 weeks before camp. As the work increases more hard food may be introduced, this will avoid a drastic change of diet when the horse/pony is stabled at camp. Horses/ponies who are already ridden regularly and are competing at week-ends will be quite fit, they may need a little more work in the weeks leading up to camp and should be fed accordingly, for some older ponies this will be an increase in hard food. We appreciate that finding time to ride regularly, especially with the demands of school work can be very difficult. However if your pony/horse in not fit enough for the work required at camp it is possible that he/she may need a rest day in the middle of the week. This will mean you will miss out on some of the fun of camp and your pony/horse will find the week a struggle.your regular Instructor, an Instructor at any PC rally, Livery owner or Ros Hayward ( ) will always help you if you are unsure of how to proceed with a fitness programme (Please Read Manual of Horsemanship re feeding.
