6 2008 Walking Field Trial The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Minnesota held our annual Spring Walking Field Trial over the weekend of April 11-13, 2008 at Kelley Farms in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. This was the first year that we had a three day trial, we added amateur puppy and derby stakes in the addition of the normal six stakes offered. Leading up to the trial we had a late spring storm come in and we weren t sure what type of conditions would be awaiting us on Friday. While we missed the big snow, within 60 miles to the north and west they had received 8 plus inches of snow, we had about an inch on the ground with light sleet/snow all day long driven by a strong north wind. Due to the moisture that we had this spring in addition to this storm we weren t able to utilize our normal grounds and had to make a new course for the trial. For the most part it worked well. I want to thank the judges who came out and gave of their time and knowledge to help support the event. They were Charlie Aspenson of Chisago City, MN, Susan Januschka of Prescott, WI, Denise Koslowski of Blaine, MN, Clark Linn or Rogers, MN, Todd Manns of River Falls, WI, Bjorn Peterson of Lino Lakes, MN, and Steve Ralph of Forest Lake, MN. A special note to Steve, Charlie, and Denise for putting in a great effort on Friday, in miserable conditions without complaining and still doing a great job of judging the dogs. The event ran smoothly as a result of the advance planning and hard work of the trial committee. The chairman, Joe Engel and the committee of Dan Erickson, Rona Everson, Ian MacTavish, Gary Moe and Terry Singsank all chipped in doing the planning, bird planting, marshalling, gunning, cooking and all other gopher duties that arise with the running of a trial. Thanks to Troy Ryan for planting birds on Sunday. Friday luckily was our shortest day. We ran two stakes and called it quits for the day around 2:30 PM. This was much to the relief of judges, handlers, and workers. We had the support of three sponsors this year to help make our trial better. A big thanks to Pat Lamanti of Purina for providing bags of Pro Plan Performance for all the stake winners, sample bags of Pro Plan Performance for all participants, along with hats for the judges. Thanks to Craig Doherty of Field Trial Magazine for sending enough copies of the latest issue for all participants to have one and 1 year subscription certificates that were given away to the winners of 5 of the 8 stakes. Thanks also to The Bird Dog Posse and Kent Forbush of Snow Canyon Outfitters in St. George, UT for the donation of a custom leather blank pistol holster.. We drew 102 dogs with a good mix of breeds and handlers from all over the upper Midwest. Thanks to all those that braved poor travel conditions and made the trip to our trial We ran 91 dogs and finished up late Sunday afternoon under sunny skies and nicer temperatures. A couple of highlights from the event are the sweep of all the broke dog stakes by Stoney Hill s Jesse a two year old female GSP handled by Larry Loftin of Grinell, IA. Troy Ryan of Shakopee, MN handled his young GSP female, PJ Wildfires Big N Juicy to wins in three of the four juvenile stakes. We are planning to hold this trial next year again as a three day event and exploring the possibility of moving it to a date in May. Hope to see you all again next spring.
