3 Nine Mile Canyon Fence Project Diana Acerson URARA members Troy Scotter, and Steven and Diana Acerson, assisted Joel Boomgarden, Archeologist for Utah s State Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA), at Nine Mile Canyon with the staining of buck and pole fencing around the Great Hunt petroglyph panel. This panel is one of the highly visible and most visited in the canyon. SITLA initiated this project which required some pole replacement and re-staining of all the fencing at the site. Joel and one of his staff from SITLA, along with three people from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), plus Troy and the Acersons, spent over 5 hours working to repair and stain the fencing. Although cool, the weather was perfect for this project. Partly cloudy and bug free, with an occasional light breeze. Work went quickly in spite of frequent visitors to the site as the day wore on. We were surprised by the number of people who came to see the panel. Bicyclists, hikers, tourists, and even a bus load of elementary school children. Two nearby washes were flowing rapidly with spring runoff making them dangerous to cross on foot. Some visitors carefully drove through the washes, others parked before the washes and hiked in from the side. The school bus drove through the water with a flourish that had the children screaming with delight as the water splashed in great sprays away from the bus. Troy impressed us with his Tour guide abilities as he took the teaching opportunity to answer questions about the panel and Nine Mile Canyon for most of the visitors as they came and went. URARA thanks Joel and SITLA for the opportunity to help with these projects that ensure protection of these artifacts created by a long forgotten hand. 3 June 2017

4 Western Colorado Trip Dennis DeVore The Colorado trip was held May and was intended to be the second half of a similar trip we did two years ago based out of Grand Junction. This year we moved 60 miles south to the Town of Naturita, and picked up where we left off. Naturita is the trade-center for the old uranium mining district of western Colorado. Our meeting place was north of town at a large campground maintained by the local historical society. Most of us stayed there, along the banks of the San Miguel river, beneath the old cottonwoods. The campground is free and our group virtually had it to ourselves. We lined the river with at least ten different camps, and in the evenings, we gathered around the fire for some lively talk. The campground is the former ballpark for Uravan, the company town that served a big uranium - vanadium mill from Uravan no longer exists. It was leveled as part of a federal superfund cleanup that is still ongoing. But the ballpark lives on as a memorial to the town (a flag flies daily) and a great place to camp. The weekend started out a bit stormy and wet, but that seemed to clear out by Saturday morning. We had three perfect days of cool sunshine for our hiking. The rock art in this part of the world overlaps several cultures and we saw examples of all, including Archaic Uncompahgre, Basketmaker, Fremont, Ute, and a few Barrier Canyon figures. On Saturday we did the high loop in Paradox Valley and visited eight rock art sites. The going was steep and rocky all day long. On Sunday, we had an easier day, and went back to Paradox stopping at the rock art sites along the valley floor. On Monday we headed over to the Big Gypsum valley, to more sites and an overlook of the Dolores River. All in all, a successful long weekend. High panel in Paradox Valley. Dennis Devore 4 June 2017

6 Old-Timers: Gary and Janet Burningham Oscar Olson Gary thinks he and Janet joined URARA in 1988, about the time he retired from the Hercules Powder Company (Now ATK). They became one of the most prolific petroglyph chaser teams in our midst. They remember early trips with Clifford Rayl, Kirk Nielson, Jim Olive, Dorde Woodruff, Jesse and Judy Warner, Bill Hirt, and Craig and Nina Bowen. Gary met URARA members Earl and Shirley Vitus in Green River, who bagan to show him how much rock art he hadn t seen yet. Gary has led many field trips for URARA. He got us in to the ATK property a year or so ago to see sites that are ordinarily closed to the public. He has been to Grand Gulch, Paradise Flats, Caborca Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, Baja California (where he met Polly Schafsma), and the Vernal and Moab areas. He has hiked extensively in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming where he did some fishing as well. Gary has a DVD library that would be the envy of anyone. It includes rock art sites in Utah and the neighboring states of Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming (and the Dinwoody sites there), Nevada, and California. He is still in the process of transferring his 35mm slides into digital format which will take some time, he says. Besides rock art, Gary has always been a rock-hound. He collects fossils, petrified wood, agate, obsidian, and works lapidary in his shop, cutting and working with stones. Gary is from a large family. He and Janet have four children, 12 grandchildren, and 35 or so greatgrandchildren. He and Janet live in Davis County, and spend the winters in Quartzite, Arizona. They both have petroglyph vests knitted by Pearl Baker of Green River and the Robber s Roost area. Although they don t get out much any more, Gary and Janet are still an enthusiastic and valued part of URARA, and an indispensable knowledge-resource for us.
