From the desk of Shihan Harold Hicks The past year has been very challenging and somewhat difficult for all of us. However, we refused to give in or even give up to what was going on around us. We know that this year had made all of us look at life from a different outlook. However, we stuck together and continued to move forward and search out our goals that were due to us. I want to thank all of you, Students and Instructors for all you gave and whatever else you did not have to give, but you gave anyhow. This year we attended several events and seminars, and our attendance was better than we thought it would be due to this sinking economy. Due to the respect and knowledge of our Instructors, our school continued to grow. We have a well-rounded course of instruction that fits each and every individual that has the potential to want to be the best that they can be. If you want to become a Black Belt, or a very skilled martial artist, you need to visit our school and let us mold and help you get to that level. - Shihan Harold Hicks and Shihan Ray Mohalick Belt Testing This year we had three to four belt tests for the lower kyu, and we had three Brown belts to reach the level of Ikkyu and are looking forward to going to first degree black belt. Community Demonstrations On March 14 th, 2009 a demonstration was held at St Anne s on that Saturday, and Sensei Tim, Sensei Todd and me had a great time giving instructing and self-defense techniques to about twenty or more participants. We also asked some of the participants to let us show them that what we do does work, and that they could do it also. On April 25 th, 2009 at the hour of 1:30 PM until 2:00 PM, Sensei Tim and I were asked to put on a demo for the African American festival. We did not mind giving our knowledge and skill to viewers who came and watched what we did. We had about three or four Women s Self Defense sessions this year, and they were all very good, and the ladies said that they really enjoyed themselves in all the classes they attended. Page 1

2 Bushishin Budo Renmei Karate Tournament On Saturday, April 18 th, 2009 the Academy of Martial Arts went to Savannah, GA to participate in our annual Karate Tournament. Most of our students that attended came back with trophies, and felt good about competing and the sportsmanship that they had. Congratulations goes to Sensei Chris for finishing 2 nd in the State Tournament in Kumite (Sparring), during the month of March Car Stereo Plus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Window Tinting Remote Start Keyless Entry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James & Dedi Rembert Nippon Kobudo Rengokai (NKR) Seminar / Reunion On July 11 th, 2009 a Lowcountry Summer Martial Arts Seminar was sponsored by Soke Darrell Collins, and several of our students from the Academy of Martial Arts attended this event: Shihan Harold, Dedi Rembert, Berry Ray and Frankie Hudson. On October 17 th, 2009 our school was invited to attend the annual Seminar / Reunion at the Walterboro Recreation Center. The seminar was open to all students/ranks of listed instructors and invited guests of the NKR. We received some good instructions from: - Kasio Ron Cherry (Toraken Ryu). Shihan Cherry was Chief Examiner in the NKR/KSHI, Kasio Tony Annesi (Takeshin Ryu). Shihan Annesi was Ichi bon Deshi no soke (#1 student of head family) under Dai-Soke Church in Aiki-Jujutsu in Soke Darrell Collins (Kamishin Ryu). Shihan Collins is the current inheritor of the Shorinji Tetsu-Ken Kamishin Ryu NKR system from the past head family. Shihan Harold and these students attended: Dedi Rembert, Angie Spohn and Berry Ray. We really had a great time learning new stuff from all the instructors. Page 2

Special Events On December 19 th, 2009 the Academy of Martial Arts had a Christmas Party to send out our love for the school and the instructors for all they gave and did to help our school continue to grow and be very strong as we go through this trying economy. We had a lot of students and parents that attended the event. We all had a very good time and a blessed year thanks to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. St. Anne Catholic School Preparing our children to be successful in this life and the next! Join us for Race for Education Day. Saturday, March 15 th 10:30 to 2:30 Exhibitions by the Academy of Martial Arts 11 S. Magnolia St Honor Roll Academy students that make good grades are rewarded. Sumter Cut Rate Drugs rewards good grades with gift certificates for ice cream. To qualify, a student must make all A s or all A s and B s. This semester the students who exemplified Effort and Attitude were: A Honor roll: Zach Saulsgiver, David Paulding, and Rooster McLeod. A/B Honor roll: Mason Owens, Jacob Owens, Stephen Isaac, Eric Hartzell, Matthew Paulding, and Marquis Richburg Jr. Page 3

Main St Tel Saying Goodbye Sadly one of our own got orders and had to leave us. Second Green, David Pontious and his wife moved to San Antonio, Texas. David has since resumed his training at another karate school. Although his new school is different, his training at the Academy will advance him quickly in their system. Arbonne International Weight Loss / Swiss Skin Care / Nutrition / Aromatherapy Jeni Martin Self Defense Demonstration The instructors at the Academy believe in giving to the community. Throughout the year, the black belts gave of their time and training to share self-defense techniques at several events, at such locations as St. Anne School, Turner s Garage, St. Anne s Spring Festival, and the Sankofa Festival. Upcoming demonstrations will be at Crosswell Baptist Church and First Church of the Nazarene. These ladies were taught basic techniques to defend themselves form a variety of attacks. These moves were based on leverage and not brute strength. Recently, there were classes scheduled for Saturday, February 6 th and Saturday, March 6 th. Page 4

5 Alice Drive Baptist Church Come experience God s Grace No perfect people please. Christmas Party 2009 Our 2009 Christmas Party was a huge success and fun for all! A special thanks goes out to Sumter Cut Rate Drugs for providing the chicken eventually. Also, we appreciated Debbie Hudson playing the keyboard as we attempted to sing Christmas Carols. Thank you, Frankie Hudson for the use of your sound equipment. This covered dish dinner was a time to relax, celebrate, and to enjoy each other s company. This honey is great for those with allergies because it is locally grown and fresher. - Will Riggs, although a very young man, has his own lawn maintenance and landscaping service. - Bob Flury created and maintains our web site and is the editor in chief of our newsletter. - Bob Flury is now commissioned as a Constable. Contact our Fitness Coordinator, Jeni (803) McLeod Painting Co. Stanley McLeod Karate Birthday Parties Did you know that the Academy can be rented for Karate Birthday Parties? Usually, Sensei Tim and Sensei Todd handle these parties. This past year, the Academy hosted two such parties. During these parties, basic karate stances and techniques are taught. The highlights of the party are the obstacle course and the sword dueling (with foam swords). These events usually bring the grown ups onto the mats to join in the fun.
