And the backdrop of exciting stock car racing entertainment provides a perfect environment to do so. 4 lacrosse speedway history The sporting world often reflects real life; there are ups and downs, good and bad. Economics, weather, personal time constraints, age, and social attitudes, which all effect types of sporting events and venues. Yet, it is the unique and unscripted drama that racing provides which continues to draw fans and competitors to the experience of motorsports. The majority of short track racing s participants and fans are local. It is that local connection that is the catalyst for anticipation of each new season. Racing is fun, and whether it is to watch or to compete, it is a fun adventure. Times and lifestyles may have changed, but the fun that takes place at the LaCrosse Speedway remains largely the same. The race track was configured in the mid1950 s to accommodate for the most popular form of racing at that time: horse racing, on a dirt surface. The speedway, located on the Interstate Fairgrounds, was operated by the fair organizers, whom quickly discovered auto racing was growing in popularity. So, in addition to the horse races during the fair, auto races were added to the facility s schedule. Weekly racing started in 1970 when the track was paved, and local businessman Larry Wehrs began to operate the track with races on Wednesday nights. The Fairgrounds (and Speedway) have gone through many changes and have endured many challenges over the years. The G. Heileman Brewing Company purchased the Fairgrounds and promoted a much more aggressive agenda for the fair. The LaCrosse County Agricultural Society 4 took over the responsibility of the Fairgrounds operations in the late 1980 s and throughout the past five decades, racing has been a mainstay at the Fairgrounds. In late 1986, the Wehrs family, who had been promoters of the LaCrosse Track as well as one in Wisconsin Dells, decided it was time to focus on their auto dealership instead. Motorsports Management Services, Inc., led by midwestern promoter John McKarns, known for the traveling ARTGO Series, and Jody Deery of the Rockford Speedway, purchased the lease agreement to operate the track, renaming it LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Motorsports Management Services has invested over 25 years, and with the help of the LaCrosse County Agricultural Society they have been able to complete many improvement projects in their long rang plans. In the past three decades, the privately funded (no public tax dollars) entertainment facility has built or installed new restrooms, vip and hospitality decks, a hospitality pavilion, new racing pavement, added and improved lighting, and many more projects to enhance the fan and racer experience at LaCrosse Speedway. The LaCrosse Speedway has always provided good racing, good times, and great memories. Bringing that to the fans and competitors in the LaCrosse Community is what we live for, and will be for years to come.

5 DIVISIONS RACING AT LACROSSE SPEEDWAY Racing has many flavors. It is very unlike most sports that have one ball, one field, and very few players (to give them credit, a variety of skill levels). There are tracks with a dirt surface and many paved with asphalt. LaCrosse Speedway is asphalt, and has not one, but two tracks. A faster 5/8th mile oval circles around an inner 1/4 mile slower track for beginner style racing. There are different styles of classes competing, from Late Models and Sportsmen on the large track to Thunderstox and Hornets on the small track. Here s a brief description: LATE MODEL - NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Sanctioned cars are the premier class. They are made-for-racing fabricated machines from the ground up, with a 362 cu.in. engine, rollcage and suspension covered by a sleek fiberglass racing body. They use 10 wide slick tires, which are exclusively for racing fast. GRAND NATIONAL SPORTSMEN - Sportsmen cars have a starting point of street car production frames from cars 1997 or older. They are a mix between the Late Models and the Thunderstox, as there is much stock about them, but there are many racing parts as well. They race on treaded 8 wide made-for-racing tires. THUNDERSTOX - This class is the speedway s oldest entry level class, comprised of stock production cars in the 1970 s and 1980 s. They are strictly stock with modifications made for safety, and race on street tires. As showroom production models got smaller, the introduction of two more classes evolved. HORNETS - A cheap way to go racing and have fun is the Hornet class. Cars must be stock (right off the street) and a few modifications may be made for safety. The Hornets are exclusively a 4-cylinder engine class, with a maximum wheel to wheel measurement of 103 inches. STREET STOCKS - In the late 1980 s and throughout the 1990 s, the 6-cylinder car became the norm for street cars. As those cars began to expire, it was time to start putting them on the track for fun, and it s another inexpensive way to go racing. Cars must remain stock and have a minimum 106 wheelbase. OUTLAWZ - It s a Run what ya brung class where anything goes. As big engine you want or what ever 8-cylinder car you want to bring. Car must have a full roll cage, but be ready to drive it to its maximum capacity. FRIDAY NIGHT STREET DRAGS - Want to drag race? Bring out your own car and get it put into a bracket with cars similar to yours. Drag race side by side in a double-elimination bracket until there s a winner! It s Friday night fun at the track, with Burnout and Shine N Show Contests. 6 SIGNAGE The most popular medium of advertising at LaCrosse Speedway is signage. There are many different locations to place a sign to fit your budget, needs and message delivery. 8 x 20 TV BILLBOARD - The TV Billboard is the largest sign available. All signs are printed in high quality on vinyl, allowing for unique artwork, or a big bold message. Fans will easily see your sign from any seat in the grandstands. 3 x 10 TRACKSIDE WALL SIGN - It s a popular sign, designed for a tight budget. These enable companies a chance to get involved and show their support of racing at the speedway while promoting their business without a huge expense. 7 EXCLUSIVE SIGNAGE LOCATIONS If you want to break out of the pack, maybe just the thing to do is sign up for advertising and sponsorship of an exclusive location. These locations may even include weekly public address mentions as a part of the sponsorship program. These are some of the most recognized fixtures at the facility, and receive the greatest number of impressions. Most sponsors enjoy the exposure so much that they are long-term partners for several years with this promotion. VICTORY LANE - As the driver pulls into Victory Lane, the announcer mentions your business name as sponsor for every winner after every race. Your logo is prominently placed on the sign for photos and fan impressions. FLAGSTAND - Thousands of eyes will check out your signs at the flagstand all night long, as green, white and checkered flags wave for every single race held at each event. Includes signage on all four sides as well as public address. MESSAGE CENTER - The Message Center is a unique opportunity and one of only two illuminated facility signs on premise. Includes your logo and public address. The sign displays driver, sponsor and concession information during race events. SCOREBOARD - The Scoreboard is one of the most frequently viewed signs at the track. Your logo placed on an illuminated sign at the top guarantees thousands of impressions at every race. Once a month during the season, the popular Friday night Street Drags brings out fans and participants of all ages. You don t have to have a passion for cars. You don t have to be a fan of the NHRA. You don t have to know how to fix cars. You don t need to own a muscle car. What you do need to know is how to have fun with friends. Anyone with a driver s license is eligible to bring out a car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, van or even an ATV, and enter it into one of the many brackets of competition. Cars with similarities are put into brackets together for side-by-side double elimination drag racing. Passengers are welcome to ride along. On any given week, beyond the classes of on-track racing action, it s common to see autograph sessions, pace truck rides, kids events, novelty races, stunts, and more. A night out at the LaCrosse Speedway is a great way to get the family or friends together to escape the stresses of day-to-day life. The LaCrosse Speedway annually prints a 36 page full color souvenir yearbook for the fans, and it is a perfect opportunity for you to not only show your support for the local racing scene, but a chance to advertise your business products or services to a loyal demographic. This yearbook is the only printed source of information available to fans in attendance, and it is full of driver information, photos, fan information, and stories. It also explains in depth how a race night works, because it is different from other sports. SIZES ARE AVAILABLE TO FIT ANY BUDGET! THE FLAGS OF RACING Green: Start of a race; restart of a race, track is clear and resume speed. Yellow: Trouble, debris, or obstacle on track. Slow; no passing allowed. Red: Come to a complete stop as quickly and safely as possible. Track is closed due to incident or weather. Black: Disqualification / Consultation flag. Return to your pit or officials immediately. White: One lap to go. Blue With Stripe: Faster car approaching, hold your line, allow faster cars to pass (typically for lapped cars). Checkered Flag: Race is completed. Restart Lineup: When there is a crash or incident necessitating a restart, all cars involved in the incident, regardless of fault, go to the rear of the restart lineup. For example, if a car is spun by contact from another, both must move to the rear of the field before the restart. They say fast We say faster Restarts: If an event is interrupted by a yellow or red flag, cars will restart in the positions they held in the previous lap completed by the field. If a yellow comes out on the white flag lap, the yellow or checkered may be thrown at the starter s discretion. We do attend many of the other local attractions during the summer months as well; but for us, going to the races is our treat. I enjoy all the divisions but I have a particular interest in the teams that race the quarter mile. It is a tough track that provides loads of action. My wife is would rather take in the five-eighths mile action - the Late Models and Sportsmen. I guess speed is her thing. We often bring guests with us to the track. Some of our friends are new to the sport or have never really followed a local driver. They don t know many of the local drivers and don t know who is having a good or bad racing season. So my wife and I decided to spice up the experience for our friends. We devised a game for each race. The game as we call it- is quite simple. Each one of us gets to pick a car for each individual race when it pulls onto the track. When it comes time for our friends to pick, we offer some advice, but the fans around us are always eager to offer their insight as well. (Best to do your picking in a hurry.because there is not much down time between races) We let the person whose driver finished last in the last race choose first and so on.
