4 Page 4 TIMES By Rick Ellis, Club Founder As 2014 ends, and we are looking forward to another fun-filled year, I have to take a minute or two to reflect on the past year and a half. I can t believe how the club has grown in that short time! It has been a real joy to be a part of this group... the friendships that have been formed, the participation at club events and the AMAZING group of volunteers that show up at every event and make the set-up, running and tear down not only easy but fun! Our club has gotten SO MUCH exposure in its short history! In March we showed off in front of hundreds of thousands at the Atlanta International Auto Show, with our displays of 40 classic and muscle cars, then a nice club showing at the 1st annual Motorama at Atlanta Motor Speedway. We jumped in with the Gwinnett County Department of Public Safety to make the car show part of the Safety Fair an Amazing event, complete with some Cool event T-shirts! We raised money for a variety of charities and churches, had fun with two shows at the Pink Pony and ended up with a Toys for Tots cruise-in that took in an unbelievable $12,500 in toys and cash. Our total charity collections for the year was over $32,000, thanks to YOU, our fantastic members! We head into 2015 with a huge task... Make it bigger and better than I know we can, with the participation of the members and support of our sponsors. Please plan to come out to as many events as your busy schedule will allow, and help promote our group to your friends Cool Cruisers Holiday Party Our second annual Club Holiday party was another fun one! Thanks to the staff of the Greater Good BBQ in Tucker for once again taking excellent care of us. We appreciate all the club members that came out to celebrate our FANTASTIC year! 6 Page 6 TIMES Matt Podowitz & Sandy BACK DESIGN Matt with his son Max Sandy at the Roy Jones Memorial Cruise-In Georgia Cool Cruisers member Matt Podowitz and his sidekick Neil Feathers (aka Crash and Burn ) rescue old cars from behind barns and under woodpiles, get them running again, and drive them in crazy automotive events to raise money for charity. In the past five years their team, Two Horsemen of the Carpocalypse, has run three cars and raised over $12,000 for charity. Sandy is the team s latest rescue/rally project. This 1952 Plymouth Cranbrook drowned in New Jersey when Hurricane Sandy hit in After sitting in four feet of water for several days Front Design and then rusting for nearly a year, the previous owner regretfully deemed this gorgeous midcentury sedan a total loss and was going to dispose of it. Crash s and Burn s friend Jim Thwaite (owner of road rally organizer Asphault Adventures) saw the car being offered for sale one last time online for its scrap value and knew that Crash and Burn would never let this car go to the crusher. He bought the car for $500 and had it towed to his garage while the team came up with a plan for putting the car back on the road. Sandy has proven to be the team s biggest build yet It took Your nearly Name a year of effort just to get the car sufficiently mobile to be loaded on an auto transporter for the trip to Crash s pad in Atlanta. The car now has a new drive train (leftovers from someone s 49 Dodge hotrod project), a partially-complete 12 volt electrical system conversion, new brakes, and new wheel bearings. The car made it eight miles to the Georgia Cool Cruisers Roy Jones Memorial show and five of the eight miles home under her own power. (Atlanta fans of the team, please call Ken Kianpour of Red Ivey s Express Towing for all your towing needs at definitely a friend of banger cars and those who drive them.) More work remains to be done before Sandy can drive her first rally (Asphault Adventures West Virginia to Key West Rally in May/June 2015), including rebuilding or replacing the 1949 transmission (1st and 2nd gear issues), rebuilding or replacing the differential (a seemingly never-ending Achilles Heel for the team s rally cars), and rebuilding the steering and suspension. But Sandy will drive again. Please follow Two Horsemen of the Carpocalypse on Facebook and on the team s website ( for updates. Thanks for reading, and see you on the road!
7 Page 7 TIMES A Perfect December Day to Honor Roy and His Family! We could not have asked for a better day in December (or for ANY month) for a Cruise-In, sunny and in the mid 60 s! That and the reason for the show brought out over 80 cars to honor Roy and his family. We filled the Diner parking lot and overflowed into the bank lot across the street. We got to see many of the Galaxy regulars, some just stopped by to make a donation to our charity, Fisher House. We collected $2,000 for this great charity that helps families of our military, plus another $125 for our Secret Santa fund. We changed our award format for Galaxy shows, with a Best in Show and Top 10 instead of various age category winners, and was a hit with the crowd (see page 2 for a list of the winners). Thanks to the North Georgia Mopar Club for their participation and the Atlanta Mopar Club that made a cameo appearance on their way to a Toys for Tots event. We are sure Roy was looking down on the event and was very impressed! Front Design Some of the SHOW WINNERS: Top Left: Steve Ashby s 57 Chevy (Roy Jones Award). Top Right: Roy s 65 Buick, presented by his family; Maria, Christina, Fabi and Luis (Top 10) Middle Left: Kevin Watkins 03 PT Cruiser (Top 10) Above: Chris & Krys Street s 70 Plymouth Superbird (Best in Show) Left: Alan & Rochelle Ziglin s 61 Plymouth (Top 10)
