5 Spotlight on Inductees of the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame 5 Each month we will spotlight Inductees of the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame. This time we are putting the spotlight on two well-deserving inductees Ken Taylor and Gene Genneten KENNETH RICHARD TAYLOR Ken Taylor started his racing career in 1953, as he partnered with Roy Hibbard and Junior Knox. Hibbard worked at a gas station in Slater, Mo and Taylor went up to him one day and said, You know that one of the old cars behind the station has a big block engine in it and we could race it. The car was then made into the #55 racer and Hibbard and Taylor took turns behind the wheel. In the late 1950 s Taylor moved into the Blakemore Douglas #49 of Slater. This car carried him to his first C.M.R.A. Championship in 1957 and four more in 1958, 1959, 1962 and In 1958, Taylor captured his first Missouri State Fair Championship in the #49 racer that was wrenched by Charlie Garner and George Douglas. The racer also carried him into his second championship in In 1965, Taylor teamed up with what most would call an unbeatable team. The McCown Brothers of Sedalia, Mo. Larry and Merlyn provided him with the ever-so popular #96 racer. Wally McCown and Larry Sullivan, mechanics, helped improve the team. The #96 racer carried Taylor to his third Missouri State Fair Championship in During his racing career, Taylor, with the help of the McCown s, won 17 straight feature wins at Capital Speedway. A highlight of Taylor s career was the sixth annual Knoxville Nationals, where 93 cars from all over the Midwest signed in at the pit gate and Taylor placed fourth. Taylor picked up his sixth C.M.R.A. Championship in 1966 in the #96 racer. Taylor s last big finish in racing came as he won his fourth Missouri State Fair Championship title on Friday, August 26. Taylor beat out Ray Lee Goodwin as they dueled during the 50 lap race at Sedalia s old half mile oval. No one anticipated that not even 48 hours later, Taylor would meet his untimely death in an accident at his home track in Marshall, Mo. Taylor was the only race car driver killed at Sportsman s Speedway. His death came in front of a crowd of racing fanatics and his family who were in disbelief that a tragedy could happen to such an outstanding young race car driver. The racers that night came to a screeching halt and were finished at a later date. Taylor won 144 heat races in the C.M.R.A. He had 87 second place finishes, 70 third place finishes and 46 fourth place finishes. Taylor won a whopping 136 features. Also during his time in the C.M.R.A. he won 73 trophy dashes. The father of four daughters the oldest being twins through the years has come up from jalopies into the fastest power of the super modified and he is well-known not only in the Central Missouri area but on the tracks at Topeka, Kansas, Knoxville, Iowa, and in the greater Kansas City area racing plants. #96 racer. Taylor was known as a driver who turned his hobby into a profitable factor but he always took his job behind the wheel as a serious one, and while a strong competitor for honors, Ken did not believe in putting his fellow driver s safety into jeopardy just to get ahead. Taylor was employed for 16 years by the Kansas City Power and Light Company and was a member of the Central Missouri Racing Association. Kenneth Richard Taylor was born June 10, 1929 at Eldon, Mo. and lived in Slater, Mo. 21 years. Taylor was only 37 years old when he passed away. He was married to Betty Taylor and had four beautiful daughters, Eileen, Arleen, Margaret and Kathleen Taylor. Ken Taylor s death was the first in some 13 years of race action at Sportsman s, Speedway and is believed to be the first ever in the history of the Central Missouri Racing Association in 15 years. There have been many serious mishaps but never before a fatality to a driver. GENE GENNETEN At the young age of 24 years, Gene showed the art of racing. The passion to race with the belief that Consistency in racing will pay the largest dividend. A welder by trade. A hard worker. A hard charger. Shop foreman for Greg Weld s Weld Wheels. With only one noticeable mark from racing, a front tooth that was broken while he was a soap box derby participant in Pueblo, Colorado. Gene went from picking up the bug in 1962 while pitting for a friend to over 240 feature wins in Super Modifieds, Sprints and Midgets in sanctions such as USAC, IMCA, NSCA, MARA, WOOM. Badger at tracks such as Olympic Stadium, I-70 Speedway, Riverside Stadium, Old Lakeside Speedway, Topeka Fairgrounds, Topeka Short Track, Old Shawnee Speedway and Sportsman Speedway. His cars carried his personal unique design. No kit cars purchased for him. Inverted starts were the way to go.. a show for the fans. A champion caring the well-known #300. How was it accomplished? A fast car, a first class pit crew, an understanding wife, and luck. Gene went on to accomplish many memorable championships and other prestigious racing acknowledgements. A four-time season champion at Olympic Stadium; Burlington, Iowa Champion; three-time MARA Midget Champion (81, 82, 83 driver & owner); 5th in the 1968 Knoxville Nationals Sprit Car Track Champion at the Old Lakeside Speedway and 1983 Season Champion in SWIMS Midgets; 1980 Silver Dome Classic winner; National Quarter Mile Champion at Sportsman Speedway in Marshall, Mo; won Hero Vises Outlaws at Pontiac Michigan; finished second in the first Chili Bowl as well as two other top five finishes and won two preliminary features; two top three finishes in the Belleville Nationals as well as two Belleville National Preliminary feature wins. In 1984 & 1985 Gene also raced midgets in New Zealand, Australia. If it wasn t racing, then Gene was a sincere, dedicated promoter. One, whom looking back, would say that one of his most memorable races was in the #3 car for the very first Jerry Weld Memorial race at Olympic Stadium s season opener in Jerry Weld was not only a racer and Olympics director, he was Gene s friend. Gene a fiery little driver whom stated This is one race I really want to win where anything that car makes at the pay window goes into the fund.
6 From The President Karen Darling President Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame & Museum Greetings! Hope all are having a fantastic spring. The Officers and Board members of the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame and Museum want to say Thank You to all who came and made our Hall of Fame banquet a huge success. The Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame and Museum had a total of 27 living Hall of Fame Inductees and 15 representatives of deceased Hall of Fame Inductees attend. The 2017 Hall of Fame Banquet was held at the Gladstone Community Center in Gladstone, MO. The Hall of Fame wants to thank Racinboys, Lisa Burlington Photos, Ty Nieman with Barnyard Catering and BBQ, our presenters Bob Baker and Fred Broski and the Gladstone Community Center. We want to say Congratulations to the 2017 Inductees Gary Ainsworth, Jack Belk, Bob Burns, Billy Deckman, Jesse Hockett, Duane Isaacs, Fred "Goober" Reneau and Dave Wall. Great racing memories were shared by all. After being with the Gladstone Community Center for the past nine years, the 15 th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet will be held at the Elks Lodge in Blue Springs, Missouri starting in March of We want to thank Linda Borders and her crew at the Gladstone Community Center for the past nine years and say that we loved being there but the time has come for us to move on. The community center has helped us out with the overage and we really appreciate them putting up with us but we need more room. Please keep in mind that from year to year we do not know how many people will attend the banquet but after the last five years of turning people down for tickets we hope this move forward will allow us to be able to add them. For the last five years the Hall of Fame Banquet has sold out. We have had to turn people away and limit our tickets to the incoming inductees. The board and officers have looked for places that would hold more than what the community center can hold but also looking for the same atmosphere that the community center gave us. That was hard to find. We have found what we think is the closest thing to that. The Elk Lodge in Blue Springs, Missouri. We will need everyone s help to make it the same atmosphere as the last nine years. We are lucky because it is the Inductees, their families, friends, crew, sponsors and fans that make that atmosphere happen. Please join us for the Hall of Fame Legends Picnic on Sunday, June 25, 2017 starting at 11:00 am Rain or Shine located at the Marrs Barn W 51 st St Shawnee, KS Catered by the Christy s. We start eating at 1:00 pm. All are welcome! Support the Hall of Fame by coming an Ambassador. Check it out in this newsletter. Check out our new display at the Kansas City Automotive Museum. Featured Inductees are Fred Broski and Billy Deckman. We would like to thank Chuck Hines and CT Jacobi for loaning the museum the #96 car that 2009 Inductee Ken Taylor drove and also the #26 car that two of our 2016 Inductees, Roy Hibbard and Tom Corbin, drove. Please visit our website at for any information about us. There you will find the Officers and Board members names and phone numbers if you need any help with anything. Also like us on Facebook - Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc. Until next time, enjoy your summer. Be safe and God Bless you all.
