Shenandoah Valley Wine Tour Saturday, April 14 Organized by John Asmus Region 4 Sacramento Early Ford Club met at Brookfield (Rancho Cordova) at 10 am, departed at 10:30 am with Dave Fibush leading with his GPS giving directions to the Volcano Union Inn for lunch in Volcano. Region 135 El Dorado Early Ford Club met John Asmus in Drytown at 10:30 am then on to Volcano Union Inn for lunch with the Sacramento Club in Volcano. Ramere Vineyards Volcano Union Inn served a great leisurely lunch enjoyed by all, after taking pictures of the group cars John Asmus lead the tour of Flatheads Fords to the Ramere Vineyards for wine tasting and group conversation. See all the pictures on Page 4. The next stop Deaver Vineyards more wine tasting and conversation and then on to the Heiwig Vineyards with final stop at the T.K.C. Vineyards. John Asmus we thank you so much for you effort great tour and thank Region 135 for joining our tour it made the tour special. Phil Nemaric an upholsterer with over 40 years in the business and one of numerous family members also in the business and the principal behind Greater Sierra Upholstery was on hand to give us a great talk on the fine art of sprucing-up our jalopies. He recommends that all amateurs should give it a shot, especially with the fine products from Lebaron Bonney. If your springs are shot rebuild with wood and foam. High density foam Japanese, Mercedes and Volkswagen all make very good seats. When in doubt hire a pro. Old business: minutes were moved and seconded. Treasurer's report: We still don't need any TARP money! Maybe we should file papers and become a bank...hmmm CEO Steve Wahab... Sounds good! The rest of you would be vice presidents! New business: Western National meet in Redmond, Oregon in September. They need money! We all voted to send them $250. April 14 is the club tour to Shenandoah Valley Wine tasting hosted by John Asmus. The Placerville club will join us. Hope the rain lets up. Next meeting May 7th is at Vintage Ford. Drive your V-8 for pictures that will taken for the Club Album. We need volunteers with the car show at RedHawk Casino on May 19th. Andy Nantz and Bill Toensing were at the ACCC meeting and found a lot of politicos this fine election year. Ethanol is the big issue. They want to increase the percentage that is used in our fuel. Alcohol products tend to generate moisture over time, especially if a car has been sitting. Not good! A lot of the bills that are presented as being ready for signature are routinely modified by our political hacks (leaders) at the last moment to benefit some special interest (business). 3 Clutch Chatter May 2012 Page 3 40 Fords Forever The year was 1959 nearing the close of the fifth decade of the 20th century. The place was a body shop in the County Seat town of Holton, Kansas (population under 3,000) four miles northeast of the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation. A 15 year old youth by the name of Daryl Spiker, then working in the shop, was attracted by the 1940 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan covered with a clutter of boxes stashed in a corner of the building. The car had not been driven in a long time. Daryl decided that was the car he wanted. He asked his employer if the car was for sale. The answer: NO! A seed was planted however and a week later Daryl learned that a decision had been made by the boss family to sell the 40 Tudor to him for $ This was $25.00 more than Daryl could afford but credit was allowed for payment in full at the end of the month. Thus began Daryl s lifelong involvement with flathead V-8 s. The owner had the car for 20 years and it was restored 10 years ago. Daryl liked what he saw. The car did have some problems but they were easily fixable. After flying home Daryl pondered whether to buy the car for a week memories of his first car prevailed and he located a trucking company to transport it to California. This 1940 Deluxe Tudor Sedan is a very solid original car needing some repairs and maintenance. Daryl is looking forward to attending to these which will involve brakes, wiring, a new carburetor and rear floor mat. Daryl is thoroughly enjoying working on this car which is rewarding in the present but also brings back pleasures from the past. He has entered the car in the May 19, 2012 Fords to the Foothills Car Show being held at the Redhawk Casino. Be sure to look for it. Half a century and several flathead V-8 restorations later Daryl is now retired, has sold his Harley Davidson motorcycle and is searching for a 1940 Ford Deluxe Sedan like his first car. Preferably it would be an older restoration, drivable and with modest repairs needed. An Internet search found several prospects in California and Nevada but they fell short of Daryl s requirements. Eventually, a strong possibility was located in West Palm Beach, Florida. After an exchange of s and telephone calls with the owner Daryl decided it was time to take a vacation trip to Florida to not only examine the 40 Tudor but to contact local V-8 club members for more information about the car.
