President s Words Lately we haven't had many nice days for driving our classic cars or convertibles but Sunday was beautiful and warm. This has been a long winter! Whit and Geri Herrin drove their '56 T-bird and there were 6 new birds at the meeting in Mooresville. The warm sun allowed a lot of tire kicking after the meeting. There are some exciting overnight events coming up for the club this year. Mark you calendar for these dates: September 12 & 13 overnight to Blowing Rock. December 5 & 6 overnight to Asheville. There will be more information and details to come. Remember to thank Francis and Mary Kate for their efforts to plan these two trips for us. The plans for each weekend look like a lot of fun. Also, the December outing will probably include our Christmas party. I know and I am sorry but it's impossible to accommodate everyone's calendar but I encourage you to try and work these outing into your schedule. Our next meeting location is iffy right now. We were invited to a special event needing old cars in Winston-Salem on April 18 th from 9am-5pm. Eric Mercer and I are trying to get more information and the particulars before we commit. Again, there will be more information to come. Remember Saturday, June 20 th is our outing and meeting with the Star City T-bird Club at Rocky Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 2 TARHEEL CLASSIC T-BIRDS, INC. MINUTES March 8, 2015 The March meeting of the Tarheel Classic T-Bird club was held at Fat Boys restaurant in Mooresville, NC. It was a sunny day which allowed everyone to get a good look at Whit and Geri Herrin s 56 T Bird. There were also six new birds in the parking lot. President Renee Dugan called the meeting to order and thanked RC and Grace Channon for hosting the meeting. Gail Walker gave thanks before the 22 members in attendance went to fill their plates at the buffet lunch. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as posted in the Newsletter with a motion from Bob Walker and a second from Louise Miller. Becky was not present but club is solvent. Charles ed the 2015 membership roster last week to those who have addresses. Photos from Louise Miller Last month, Renee had asked Frances Vinoski and Mary Kate Talbert to review the information gathered for future meetings and propose some options. Frances distributed information on two outings. The first proposal would be for a trip in September to Blowing Rock, NC. The second proposal would be for a trip to Ashville, NC in December. There was much discussion during which the group decided they would like to do both trips. Although hard to find dates that work for everyone, dates of September 12 th and13th and December 5th and 6th were determined to be the best dates for those in attendance.further information on these two events will be included in the newsletter. Birthdays and Anniversaries for this month were recognized. Marti Sell lead the group in singing Happy Birthday to Suzanne McLean. Gerald & Louise Miller will be married 53 years this month. The 50/50 drawing was won by Bill Lackey. There was discussion concerning the location of the April meeting. Renee received an concerning a request for old cars at a car show in Winston Salem on April 18 th at the Winston Salem Hotel & Spa. Renee and Scott Mercer will get more information on this event. Confirmation of the location for the April meeting will be in the newsletter. With no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Gail Walker and seconded by Larry Dugan. 5 CTCI Convention - "Birds of Enchantment" Albuquerque, New Mexico If you have considered going to the CTCI Regional Convention this year in Albuquerque, NM, now is the time to put some action to the thought. The Pajarito Thunderbird Club is hosting "Birds of Enchantment" from August 26th through the 30th, Come and share a time of mingling with other Thunderbird lovers.. They have a full schedule planned, including an Ice Cream Social! Show your car in the Concours Competition and see how close you can get to the 300 point mark of perfection or just enjoy the drive to New Mexico with friends. To register for the Convention and see all the other activities the Pajarito Thunderbird Club has planned for us, click on the convention links on the left of this page. Please get your registration form filled out and sent back in so they can get a correct head count. Follow the "Convention Hotel Reservations" link on the left to make your reservations to stay at the Sheraton Uptown hotel. Rooms are filling up fast so make your reservations early. PLEASE NOTE: Sheraton Hotel is already sold out August 25th and 26th. Rooms are still available for August 27th - 31st. There are two overflow hotels available on the 25th and 26th in the area with a $ rate. Albuquerque Marriott Uptown call (888) to make your reservation. Ask for the Pajarito Thunderbird Club Hilton Garden Inn Uptown. Call 800-HIL TONS and give them the group code of PTC for reservations there. Sheraton will also provide complementary breakfast for those staying at the Marriott or Hilton. Please check the Sheraton website frequently to make sure you have the most current information for booking your stay at the Convention! While you're in Albuquerque... Are you a major Film buff? If you consider yourself a fan of movies/television production, this is a tour you won't want to miss. Shows such as Breaking Bad with Brian Cranston is just one of the many television shows/movies that are filmed in Albuquerque. If you ever wanted to stand where Walter White has stood, this is your chance! Plan on coming early or leaving late from the convention and take a tour that will satisfy any film lover. HELP! I am attempting to collect, from a historical standpoint, copies of old monthly newsletters and Tarheel Thunderwords. To date, with the help of Bill Lackey, Bobby and Pat Bason, and Wayne and Myrle Carlton I have some as far back as 1973 but am still missing issues from 1988 to 1996, and 1999 & I have few copies of the newsletters issued between 1973 and If members have copies of the missing issues let me know. 6 April Meeting Info We were invited by the Old Salem AACA chapter of Winston-Salem to bring our cars. It is an "old car" car show put on by radio station Magic 99.9 So drive your "OLD" t-bird! The event is being held from 9am to 5pm. It is open to all. It is to introduce "Fruit of the Vine World Garden." The World Garden is a non-profit organization that provides seeds for individuals to "plant a seed, feed the world." Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. After you wash and vacuum your car remember to check all the belts and hoses. When you change the oil make sure you use a high zinc oil. Did you know that the new oils on the market today don't have the zinc in them that the old cars need? It has been taken out of the new oil because of catalytic converters and roller cams in the newer cars. The older cars need the zinc for the flat tappet cams. It is difficult to find high zinc oil in the regular automobile oil section of your local auto parts store. Look in the diesel oil section of oils with zinc. A couple of examples are Rotella or Amsoil synthetic Zrod and This oil is specifically designed for the older cars. If your antifreeze hasn't been changed for the last 2-3 years think about doing it to keep your cooling system clean. Antifreeze loses it anticorrosive additive package after a period of time. -Larry Dugan 6
