1 May 2017 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE FORDS UNLIMITED CAR CLUB W e are now entering the busy time of year for our club. May starts with the Shelbyfest held May 4th through the 6th. Although not a club event, many of our members make this an annual event. The show is held in Jefferson City. Last year they had 714 cars from 28 states and an estimated 25,000 spectators. Our first club event will be the Valley of I t s time to get busy with our car show. The classes have been set and sponsorship forms and mini-flyers are now available. This is the time that we need our members to step up and help selling show classes and signing up to help work the show. As you know, our 31st annual all Ford Show will be held on July 30th at McDonnell Park in St. Ann. P.O. Box Ballwin, MO Board of Directors Cindy Ahrens Bill Bauer Syl Biermann Paula Goodrich Dan Kelly Secretary-Cindy Ahrens Editor Bob Layton or mickie6t6@hotmail.com Publishers-Bill & Barb Giese Web Master-Scott Lewis Keirsten McDaniel Flowers car show that will be held on the 6th. We will meet at Crest Bowl located at Florissant Road and St. Francis at 8 am. There is a great donut shop just up the road from the bowling alley so come early if you are hungry. On the following day, six of our members will represent our club at the Valley of Flowers parade. If you are signed up, please see Dan Kelly for details. This is not a club event and besides Dan, we can only have 5 additional cars in the parade. We will finish the month by attending the Salute to the Troops car show in O Fallon, Missouri on May 21st. We will meet at the Burger King located at Highway 70 and Mid-Rivers Mall Drive (north side). We will meet at 8:30 am. Come a little earlier if you plan to eat breakfast at Burger King. If you prefer not to caravan, the show is held at the VFW Post 5077 located at 8500 Veterans Memorial Parkway in O Fallon, Missouri. Space is limited at this show so come early. For show information, contact club member, Lynette Lewis at This is a club event for points. The cruise season also is in full swing along with many cars and coffee events. Check out our area events section for details on these. As mentioned in an earlier issue, we plan to try to have 2 shifts for our concession workers. Last year, those volunteers worked most of the day without any relief. We will also need car parkers, people to classify cars, people to work registration, people to count ballots. It takes many hands to make this work and we need our club families to help make our show a success. If you are willing to help, please contact our chairman, Jim Biermann. Remember, there many shows you can attend throughout the year, but this is a work day for our members. Be proud of your club. This is your show.

3 May 2017 Page 3 O n April 8th, the Mustang Club of St. Louis held their annual Mustang Roundup. Although the event was originally to be all Mustangs, our club was invited to bring any of our Ford products and that we did. The day started a little on the cool side but temps rose into the midseventies which made for a great day. Anxious to start the show season, our club turnout for this event is always good, even on those years when mother nature was still hanging onto winter. We had 27 of our club cars and trucks and about 35 members and family. It was great to see new member, Rich and Coleen Chatfield active with their red 88 Mustang convertible. Although fighting some serious health problems Ed Mauzy, along with Julie, was in attendance with their Raptor. It was great to see Ed back in limited action. As the afternoon came, some of our members were off to other events and cruises to take advantage of the great April weather. We thank all of those who represented our club that day. 5 May 2017 A s a rainy day turned into a nice spring evening, some of our members headed to the A&W on the Rock Road to celebrate the Mustang s birthday and maybe indulge in a root beer float. We had 15 of our club cars and may have scored a new member. As usual, it turned into a mini car show. We thank Paula Goodrich and Jerry Grimmer for setting up this event and all of our members who were there to support our club. Page 5

6 May 2017 Page 6 By Bill Bauer Photos by Bill Bauer T he Mid America Cougar Nationals were held on April 21st and 22nd, in Tulsa Oklahoma at the Tulsa Expo Center. It was sponsored by the Mid-America Cougar Club and Lone Star Cougar Club, with support of the Cougar Club of America. Local Fords Unlimited club members who registered for the show were Bill Bauer, Greg Young, and Steve Hendricks. Although Steve decided not to go because of the weather forecast and a bad case of poison ivy. Other FUCC club members who attended without cars were Jim and Syl Biermann and John Saxton. The venue was held indoors at the Tulsa Expo Center. There were 113 cars registered but the official count was down to 94 Cougars and two Comets. All the buildings at this large complex were labeled for Ford vehicles, Mustang Barn, Explorer Barn, Expedition Barn, Super Duty, etc. They were not really barns but multi-use buildings. Along with an indoor arena with quarter mile track where the Chili Bowl Race is held. (midget car race). Nothing like it in STL. There were 13 classes and best of show. Three awards per class. Our road trip started on Thursday April 20th, Greg driving his 1970 Cougar XR7 428 ci. with wife Fay, And me trailering my 1970 Cougar with Donna. We ran into heavy rain about an hour out of STL. And then Greg's car developed an oil leak from the rear main seal, which we stopped every 100 miles so he could check and add oil. I don't know how he saw out of the windshield with the eighteen wheelers passing us in the rain. I was not supposed to go over 55 mph because I had rented a trailer. So we got passed by everything. Anyway we made it. Thursday evening there was a meet and greet at a local favorite restaurant, Tally's, a retro route 66 diner, It rained and stormed Thursday night and most of the day Friday. If you didn't have an enclosed trailer you were soaked. The wind was fierce. Car covers didn't have a chance. There were several Cougars sitting outside through all this, even a couple of Eliminators. During a break in the weather on Friday they let us take our cars inside the building where the car show was held and they stayed there until Saturday morning. There was a Cruise scheduled for Friday but was cancelled but with pretty many registered car owners there before the show there was a Meet and Mingle at Baxter's, another favorite watering hole in downtown Tulsa. Finally Saturday it's show-time and no rain. We arrived at 6:30 am to move the cars out of the building and them line up and re-enter the building and get the cars prepared for the show which started at 10 am. Judging starts and building opens to the public. Voting closed at 2:30, (participant voting), with concours judging optional. 3 pm the show closed to the public. A nice catered Banquet at 5:30, Syl, Jim, Donna, myself, Fay, Greg, and Tom and Les from the Cape (Mo) shared a table, The awards ceremony was at 6:00 pm all held in the same building as the car show. The neatest thing was Greg was selected as a keynote speaker, He is member #20 of the Cougar Club of America which was founded in 1980 which now has about 9,000 members worldwide. If you want to know anything about Cougars he's your man. Many beautiful cars, the early models with either a 427 or 428 were the highlight. At Trophy time Greg unfortunately got shut out in his class. But I was totally surprised to get 1st Place in my class. Another neat thing was at the trophy presentation the class sponsor was there to hand out the awards. Anyway it turned out to be a fun trip, the show committee and volunteers from Mid America Cougar Club did a first class job. I've never seem so many Cougars in one place from the 1967 trough the 's, 351s, 427's and 428's. Again what a great venue. Greg decided to rent a truck and trailer to bring his car home to STL and not risk any motor damage. We all made it home safely.

7 May 2017 Page 7 W hat better place to be during heavy rain and flood warnings than be by a ragging river at a dam but that s what we did on April 29th as our club toured the Melvin Price Locks and Dam. The Melvin Price Locks and Dam is located below the confluence of the Illinois River and above the mouth of the Missouri River in Alton, Illinois. Each year more than 75 million tons of goods, valued in excess of $23 billion move though these locks. Unfortunately, the rain and threat of lightning made it impossible to tour the entire complex. After the lightning abated, we were able to venture outside for a short while. After the tour, we ventured to the Old Bakery Bread Company microbrewery for lunch and to sample some of their products. Some were even able to get in a short nap. We thank Dan Kelly for setting up this club event. A great way to spend a crappy spring day.
