2 Wilkes County High School Theater Department Performs A Christmas Wizard of Oz The Wilkes County High School Theater Department performed A Christmas Wizard of Oz on December 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th. It was sponsored by Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program and (Smart Start) Wilkes Community Partnership for Children. It involved students from all 5 high schools. A snow blizzard carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Elfinsland where Glinda is the Good Witch of the North Pole. Dorothy must get home to open her Christmas presents in the morning, so she sets off to meet the Wizard who lives in the Great Palace of Toys. Through her adventures, Dorothy learns that the real gifts of Christmas are friends, family and love. With the friends she makes in Elfinsland, she realizes that nothing in life is more important than wisdom, caring and courage. Cast: DeLayne Jolly Dorothy, Ally Nieland Toto, Darren Wyatt Snowman, Mitchell Brown Tin Soldier, Alex Hernandez Lion, Matthew Dimmette Wizard, Jonathan Worley Mr. Jingles, Lindsey Combs Glinda, Gabriella Lankford Witch, Ben Foster, Olivia Palmer, Ben Adair, Jadie Roten, Rosalee Reavis, Nathan Shepherd as the chorus. Oz was directed by Marshall Brooks, Stage Managers were Zoe Palmer and Destiny Smith, Hailey Hogan

3 Wilkesboro Elementary Participates in ASU Women's Basketball Elementary Day Julie Hayes, Mickey Portante and Stella Hayes of Wilkesboro Elementary School qualified to participate in Appalachian State University's Women's Basketball Elementary School Day on November 30. Each of the three students kept an ASU summer reading log and also met their school reading goal over the summer. ASU honored these three students by inviting them to Elementary Day which consisted of: A meet and greet session with three different professionals in the sports industry representing different career options, paths and education, Visit time with YOSEF Front row seats at a women's basketball game, ASU vs. NC A&T. Congratulations to these three students! Wilkesboro had 11 additional students recognized by ASU for participating in the summer reading program. Each student qualified for one free ticket to a women's or men's basketball game. Keep reading Wilkesboro students!

4 Update to T3LC s Grant Cycle The Youth Philanthropy Group, T3LC "Giving for a Better Tomorrow", has a grant cycle that is open for youth-led projects. Applications are due January 12, Grants request from $ 100 to $2,000 are being received and must have a positive impact on youth in Wilkes County. Request that focus on alcohol/tobacco/drug abuse, home/family relations, racism, teen pregnancy, or poverty will receive extra consideration. Application and information package can be found on website under the District link, Grants and Special Funding. 5 Just Save Foods Helps Students Shop for Food Bank Over 60,000 pounds of food were donated to the food pantry at Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission (BROC) on December 14th thanks to Just Save Foods on N.C. 18 North, local students and an annual golf tournament raising $26,345 in October. The funding for the food was raised during the Benny Parsons Race Against Hunger Golf Tournament at Cedarbrook Country Club near Elkin. 20 students from Mulberry and Mountain View Elementary Schools and North Wilkes Middle School went shopping for the food items donated to BROC. Terri Parsons, widow of Benny Parsons, a NASCAR driver from Wilkes and Greg Biffle, a former NASCAR driver, served breakfast to the students before their shopping began. Biffle and Bobby Allison, also a former NASCAR driver, waived the green flag for students to begin shopping, mimicking the start of a NASCAR race. Students also learned how to use the cash register by ringing up the items they had collected. Employees from Just Save Foods assisted the students, along with the district manager and an assistant manager from another Just Save. The food drive was sponsored by Lowe's and Just Save stores in N.C., S.C. and V.A.

6 Lowes Gives to Students Lowe's visited Mt. View Elementary School to spread Christmas cheer by giving all students a Build and Grow Kit! They also visited Moravian Falls, North Wilkesboro, Boomer Ferguson, Wilkesboro,and Millers Creek, Thank you Lowe's, for your great partnership with our schools!
